Speaking more than one language may benefit children’s executive (执行的) function — especially those with autism spectrum (自闭症谱系) disorder (ASD), a recent analysis suggests.
The study, published in Autism Research, looked at 116 children aged 7 through 12. Of those, 53 had autism spectrum disorder and 63 did not, though 4 children were later excluded. Twenty-one of the children with ASD spoke more than one language, and 35 of the typically developing children were multilingual (讲多种语言的). The researchers tested the children’s executive function abilities and asked parents to fill out surveys assessing autism behaviors such as viewpoint taking — the ability to understand viewpoints other than one’s own — and social communication.
The multilingual children all demonstrated better executive function than their counterparts who spoke just one language, regardless of whether they were on the autism spectrum. But the effect was more salient in multilingual kids with ASD. These kids had much better self-control than those who only spoke one language and had ASD.
The research also found a “direct and indirect association between multilingualism and viewpoint taking.” This could be because people who speak more than one language must assess social signals to decide which language to speak or that their knowledge of more than one language comes with a higher ability to understand language itself, the researchers said.
Multilingual children’s executive functions could be improved by the need to choose the right language to speak, the researchers write. “If you have to balance two languages, you have to control one in order to use the other,” said Lucina Uddin, who was a professor at the University of Miami during the research. “That’s the idea. The ability to stop yourself from doing something might be strengthened by knowing two languages.”
Encouraging multilingualism at home could benefit kids with autism spectrum disorders, the researchers conclude, and could even provide a “natural intervention” for some types of executive function.

Whenever a solar eclipse(日食)occurs, life seems to stand still for a brief moment. Humans watch the sky, animals display odd behaviors, but what about plants? It turns out that plant life has its own way of dealing with this astronomical event. A new study has shown that trees react to solar eclipses and even anticipate them hours in advance, synchronizing(使同步)their bioelectrical signals in preparation.
In the study, researchers focused on the electrome of trees—this network includes the bioelectrical signals they generate to communicate and adjust responses to environmental changes. To see the electrome in action, the researchers measured bioelectrical signals in spruce trees located in the Dolomites during a partial solar eclipse. They finished this by setting up a system of sensors that could continuously collect data from the trees during the event.
The data revealed that trees’ signals became more synchronized before and during the solar eclipse. Hours before the eclipse, the trees were able to anticipate the astronomical event and change their bioelectrical behavior to prepare for upcoming effects like drops in sap(汁液)flow.
This was most prominent in older trees, which may have gained such impressive anticipatory abilities by growing accustomed to eclipse patterns over their long lifespan. After the older trees prepared themselves for the eclipse, the rest of the trees followed suit, demonstrating a close connection shared by the whole forest.
“The revelation that trees can band together to prepare for eclipses highlights the critical importance of protecting older forests, which serve as a guard of an ecosystem by preserving and spreading invaluable ecological knowledge,” said lead author Monica Gagliano.
Researchers aren’t certain about the specific clues that enabled the trees to anticipate the solar eclipse. It’s possible, however, that trees’ behavior may be a result of gravitational forces caused by the positioning of the Moon and Sun in the sky. Additional details on the power of trees—especially their capacity to anticipate and adapt to environmental changes—have yet to be uncovered, which is another reason why researchers are stressing the importance of preserving trees.

Could I do it? I questioned whether I had the skills and the right to review others’ work. After all, I was only an occasional poet and library assistant. My spirits sank when they didn’t even mention my poetry; instead, they wanted me to review someone else’s writing.
“I have a novel here. It’s by a well-known author. Would you like me to send it to you?” the editor asked. Suddenly, my heart whispered, “You can do it and say ‘yes’ now!” “Yes,” I then said. The book arrived soon. I felt anxious. Again, my heart said, “Take it one step at a time. First, read the book.” So, I did. I read it carefully and discovered I enjoyed the story.
Now what? I sat at my computer, with fingers frozen. “Think! Think! Think! What are you going to say?” I whispered and remained still for several minutes.

Speaking more than one language may benefit children’s executive (执行的) function — especially those with autism spectrum (自闭症谱系) disorder (ASD), a recent analysis suggests.
The study, published in Autism Research, looked at 116 children aged 7 through 12. Of those, 53 had autism spectrum disorder and 63 did not, though 4 children were later excluded. Twenty-one of the children with ASD spoke more than one language, and 35 of the typically developing children were multilingual (讲多种语言的). Most of the multilingual children spoke English and Spanish, though some spoke Portuguese, Hebrew, French, Japanese or Bulgarian in addition to English.
The researchers tested the children’s executive function abilities and asked parents to fill out surveys assessing autism behaviors such as viewpoint taking — the ability to understand viewpoints other than one’s own — and social communication.
The multilingual children all demonstrated better executive function than their counterparts who spoke just one language, regardless of whether they were on the autism spectrum. But the effect was more salient in multilingual kids with ASD. These kids had much better self-control than those who only spoke one language and had ASD.
The research also found a “direct and indirect association between multilingualism and viewpoint taking.” This could be because people who speak more than one language must assess social signals to decide which language to speak or that their knowledge of more than one language comes with a higher ability to understand language itself, the researchers said.
Multilingual children’s executive functions could be improved by the need to choose the right language to speak, the researchers write. “If you have to balance two languages, you have to control one in order to use the other,” said Lucina Uddin, who was a professor at the University of Miami during the research. “That’s the idea. The ability to stop yourself from doing something might be strengthened by knowing two languages.”
Encouraging multilingualism at home could benefit kids with autism spectrum disorders, the researchers conclude, and could even provide a “natural intervention” for some types of executive function.

It turns out that plant life has its own way of dealing with this astronomical event. A new study has shown that trees react to solar eclipses and even anticipate them hours in advance, synchronizing(使同步)their bioelectrical signals in preparation.
In the study, researchers focused on the electrome of trees—this network includes the bioelectrical signals they generate to communicate and adjust responses to environmental changes. To see the electrome in action, the researchers measured bioelectrical signals in spruce trees located in the Dolomites during a partial solar eclipse. They finished this by setting up a system of sensors that could continuously collect data from the trees during the event.
The data revealed that trees’ signals became more synchronized before and during the solar eclipse. Hours before the eclipse the trees were able to anticipate the astronomical event and change their bioelectrical behavior to prepare for upcoming effects like drops in sap(汁液)flow.
This was most prominent in older trees, which may have gained such impressive anticipatory abilities by growing accustomed to eclipse patterns over their long lifespan. After the older trees prepared themselves for the eclipse, the rest of the trees followed suit, demonstrating a close connection shared by the whole forest.
“The revelation that trees can band together to prepare for eclipses highlights the critical importance of protecting older forests, which serve as a guard of an ecosystem by preserving and spreading invaluable ecological knowledge,” said lead author Monica Gagliano.
Researchers aren’t certain about the specific clues that enabled the trees to anticipate the solar eclipse.
