阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?
Jane Addams (1860~1935)
Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (社区) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Rachel Carson (1907~1964)
If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.
Sandra Day O’Connor (1930~present)
When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator (参议员) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.
Rosa Parks (1913~2005)
On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year and kicked off the civil-rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” said Parks.
21. What is Jane Addams noted for in history?
A. Her social work. B. Her teaching skills.
C. Her efforts to win a prize. D. Her community background.
22. What was the reason for O’Connor’s being rejected by the law firm?

C. They are truly creative. D. They are highly educated.

Futurologists are making a lot of predictions about our future life and they are predicting how we will travel, work and live in the next 30 years. By 2048, some futurologists foresee that some “talking” buildings will appear in our life.
By the middle of the century, it’s believed that buildings will be able to “talk” to people through various sensors when the heating needs to be turned on. As a result, there will be no switches. Instead, a lot of networks will appear, which can be compared to a human nervous system. In the next 30 years, buildings will be made from concrete plastics and shape-changing materials. All of them can heal themselves at that time. As architects (建筑师) are racing to develop the world’s tallest buildings, there will be a need for new kinds of elevators, through which vehicles could even travel into the buildings. German engineers have already started working on such technology called Multi.
By mid-century, scientists believe that buildings will be miles tall. Some of them may be very large and they can function as small cities. By comparison, at present, the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai, measures 828 metres high. As the future building can rise through the clouds, their windows will be replaced by virtual screens. In this way, people can choose any view as they like.
At height extremes, a London Spaceport is also likely to come into being by 2048 as the space industry develops very quickly. There is a huge cost advantage going to space from as high a base as possible, so a spaceport is very likely to be over 10 km and even as much as 30 km, using carbon-based materials.
24. How will the heating system be controlled in the future?
A. Through sensors. B. Through the net.
C. Through mobiles. D. Through switches.
25. What might happen to the future buildings in a disaster?
A. They can protect people against harm. B. They can transport people into space.
C. They can seek help automatically. D. They can recover by themselves.
26. What’s likely to be the advantage of Multi?
A. Seeing the scenes as you please. B. Connecting the earth with the space.
C. Allowing vehicles to travel into buildings. D. Making it possible to build high buildings.
27. What does the underlined word “they” (Para.3) most probably refer to?
A. Scientists. B. German engineers. C. Virtual screens. D. Future buildings.
C
Howard Florey was born on the 24th September, 1898. He studied medicine at the University of Adelaide in Britain. Florey gathered a team of scientists in the 1930s, when working as a team was not common. He realized that science had reached a point where a team of specialists was needed, because the job was too hard for one person.
In 1940, the team performed one of the most important medical experiments in history. They tested penicillin (青霉素), the substance they had created for the first time. This experiment was successful. They then had to test penicillin on humans. In 1941, their first patient was given penicillin and within a day he was starting to recover. However, Florey didn’t have enough of the drug and unfortunately the patient died.
Determined to help people, Florey traveled to South Africa to use penicillin on wounded soldiers fighting in the war. His work was seen as a miracle. He saved millions of lives in World War Ⅱ. His role as the leader of the team of scientists that discovered and developed penicillin won him the Nobel Prize in 1945. He received many other awards as well.
Howard Florey took pride in what he did, but not once did his achievements go to his head. When describing his achievements, he said, “They were a terrible amount of luck that involved many others. All we did was do some experiments and have luck to come across a substance with astonishing properties (性质).”
Howard Florey was a determined man. Even though he had many setbacks (挫折), he continued to try to help the world. He kept going on, trying, failing but trying again until he reached his dreams.
28. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To give a brief introduction of Howard Florey to readers.
B. To discuss the contributions Howard made in World War Ⅱ.
C. To show penicillin is an effective medicine to cure diseases.
D. To explain how Howard Florey succeeded in testing penicillin.
29. From the second paragraph we can see that ______.
A. penicillin was first tested in human in 1940
B. Howard’s team made a lot of penicillin in 1940
C. the first experiment with penicillin on human failed
D. the first patient given penicillin died because of a lack of it
30. Why did Howard Florey travel to South Africa?
A. He wanted to compete for the Nobel Prize.
B. He wanted to make a miracle in medical world.
C. He wanted to test whether penicillin was useful.
D. He wanted to use penicillin to save soldiers’ lives.
31. We can infer from the fourth paragraph that Howard Florey is ______.
A. determined B. proud C. modest D. lucky
D
Fairs and theme parks never seem to lose their attraction. My kids love them as much as I do. Not everyone will agree with me though. My wife is terrified of anything more exciting than the merry-go-round. So why do I love Blackpool’s Big One while she goes white on hearing the words “roller coaster (过山车)”?
According to psychologists, it comes down to something called a “Type T” personality. Type T’s are thrill-seekers who welcome the uncertainty of activities that most people would find hair-raising. It seems some of us enjoy the physical sensations associated with fear: the adrenaline (肾上腺素) rush and the beating heart. Scary rides make us feel alive. Terrifying experiences encourage a sense of excitement once we’re back on solid ground though we only enjoy them when we’re within a “protective frame” that assures us that deep down, we’re still safe.
Recent research has found certain genes (基因) which may be responsible for those of us with Type T personalities. Biochemists have separated a gene called DRD4 which seems more common in rollercoaster lovers like me.
New technologies have allowed engineers to design coasters that change speeds quickly, shoot up hundreds of feet into the air and make all sorts of twists. Research suggests that extreme fairground rides tend to appeal particularly to those of us who lead stressful, structured or controlled lives. It’s certainly true that roller coasters are a way of breaking out of the humdrum (乏味的) expectations of everyday life. Theme parks allow us to act like children again, to experience true excitement and behave a little wildly. Where else as an adult can you scream at the top of your lungs and throw your arms in the air without being sent for psychological evaluation?
If you’re looking for a great place this summer where you can get in touch with your inner risk-taker, head for the nearest theme park. It’s a scream!
32. What can we learn about the author’s wife?
A. She gets excited easily. B. She rarely disagrees with the author.
C. She fears extreme rides. D. She loves Blackpool’s Big One.
33. What do people with Type T personalities tend to do?
A. Put their lives at risk B. Enjoy adventurous experiences.
C. Stay energetic all the time. D. Avoid the “protective frame”.
34. What has recent research revealed about the Type T personality?
A. It is common among people. B. It is genetically determined.
C. It is caused by living separately. D. It is a result of a physical disorder.
35. What’s the main reason why the author appreciates extreme fairground rides?
A. They are a replacement for psychological evaluation.
B. They contribute to parent-kid relationships
C. They are technologically designed.
D. They help relieve stress.

A couple of monkeys tried to catch the firefly and it escaped. They were sad as they could not catch the fire. They believed that they couldn't live in the cold if they didn't get fire.
The next night, again they saw many fireflies. After several attempts, the monkeys caught a few fireflies. They put the fireflies in a hole dug in the land and tried to blow the fireflies.
They blew the fireflies very hard without knowing the fact that they were fireflies.
An owl(猫头鹰)was watching the activities of the monkeys. The owl reached the monkeys and told them , ‘Hey, those are not fire! They were fireflies. You won't be able to make fire from it.’
The monkey laughed at the owl. One monkey replied,‘Hey ,old owl, you don't know anything about how to make fire. Don't disturb us!’
The old owl warned the monkeys again and asked them to stop their foolish act. ‘ Monkeys ,you cannot make fire from the fireflies! Please hear my words.’

【原文】Hello, everyone, I’m Paul White. I’m so glad to be here. Today I’m going to share my travelling experience with you. As a documentary director of nature, I always love to travel. The favourite place I have ever visited is Africa. I love the excitement of seeing animals running freely in the wild. It is fantastic. I still remember the adventure of camping when I was on safari. Besides Africa, I have visited many other places such as France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and New Zealand. People often ask me why I love to travel. How couldn’t anyone love travelling? It is so attractive to see new things, meet new people, and taste new foods. However, I have to admit that travelling costs a lot of money. I have to pay for the hotel room and food. In addition, tourist attractions are usually expensive. Although I complain about the high cost of traveling, I wouldn’t choose to spend my money in any other way.

【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C 27. D
【解析】

【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. D

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。续写的词数应为150左右。
Several centuries ago, there was a very large ,dense and dark forest. A group of monkeys arrived at the forest. It was winter , and the monkeys struggled hard to survive the freezing cold nights. They were hunting for fire to get warm.
One night, they saw a firefly(萤火虫)and considered it a dab(少量)of fire. All the monkeys in the group shouted,‘ Fire, Fire, Fire .Yeah, we got fire.’
The monkeys tried to make fire from the fireflies.
The owl told them again to stop their foolish act . ‘You are struggling so much. Go back to take your shelter in a nearby cave. You can save yourselves from the freezing cold! You won't get fire.’
注意:
1.所需写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
One monkey shouted at the owl
____________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
They went back to shelter themselves
____________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
One monkey shouted at the owl and the owl left the place. The monkeys were simply doing the foolish activity for several hours and it was almost midnight. Although they tried their best, they had to give up. They were very tired and realized that the words of the owl were correct. It was true that they couldn’t succeed in making fire from the fireflies.
Paragraph 2
They went back to shelter themselves in the cave and escape from the cold. Since then, the monkeys never make fire from fireflies. They save themselves from the freezing cold in their cave every winter. Sometimes people act like monkeys. Some people may go wrong once in a while, but they persist in doing it , which does no good to themselves. They should seek and accept the advice provided by others. Maybe others’ advice is valuable for them.
Although they tried their best, they had to give up.;同时也还使用了主语从句如It was true that they couldn’t succeed in making fire from the fireflies.此句是形式主语it后面that引导的是真正的主语,因为其是句子,故称之为主语从句。
本文段二里使用了并列从句的转折关系词but引导的句子,而且后接由which引导的定语从句,堪称高级句子。Some people may go wrong once in a while, but they persist in doing it , which does no good to themselves.还使用了一些高级词汇如persist in doing;does no good to;seek and accept the advice provided by;is valuable for。本篇续写全文表达地道,句型多变,词汇使用高级,完全符合高分范畴的作文模范。
