At the age of 19, Carl Allamby set up his vehicle repair business, working on his own in a garage (汽车修理厂). Over the years it had grown into two shops, but Allamby yearned for something more. At first, he thought that meant growing his business even further. So at 34, Allamby decided to go for his bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in business management. After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree.
Biology class reawakened Allamby’s childhood dream. He remembered the feeling of wanting to be a doctor when he was younger.
Born in East Cleveland Ohio, Allamby and his five sisters and brothers were raised by their stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door to door.
“That didn’t pay so well,” Allamby says.
Growing up in an African American neighborhood, he faced many challenges. His school didn’t offer advanced science classes. Even if it had, doing well in school could get him into trouble. “Sometimes you wouldn’t carry your books home because of the threat of being mugged (抢劫),” Allamby says. So he set aside thoughts of becoming a doctor and chose to fix cars.
With his family’s support, Allamby decided to take science classes he’d need to become a health-care worker. Becoming a doctor when he would be nearly 50 years old seemed crazy. He would instead become a nurse. But Allamby’s chemistry professor stopped him after class one day. “Carl,” he said, “you’re like the oldest student here. What’s your end game?”
Allamby told him how he’d like to become a doctor but it would be more practical to aim lower.
“Why not a doctor?” the professor asked. “You have a great intuition (直觉) for the work. You will go a long way.”
He was right. Allamby did well in all his courses.
In 2015, Allamby started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, at the age of 47, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, Doctor of Medicine, and took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.
36. What do the underlined words “yearned for” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Discovered. B. Accepted. C. Wanted. D. Wandered.
37. What was Allamby’s childhood dream?
A. To become a businessman. B. To become a repairman.
C. To become a biologist. D. To become a doctor.
38. What was Allamby’s life as a child like?
A. Risky but exciting. B. Poor and hard.
C. Peaceful but lonely. D. Simple and interesting.
39. What did the chemistry professor think of Allamby?
A. He had a talent for medicine.
B. He had wasted too much time.
C. He should have a practical aim.
D. He was not serious about the class.
40. What can we learn from Allamby’s story?
A. Every coin has two sides.
B. Early birds catch the worms.
C. Actions speak louder than words.
D. It’s never too late to follow your dream.

If work leaves you tired out, you can try switching your phone off during your lunch break. A study found that people who played on their phones during their lunch breaks were more tired in the afternoon than those who went for a walk or read a book. This may be because they used up more mental energy. Whatever the reason is, researchers said employees should be aware of the effect and that employers should consider introducing the “digital detox”.
For the study, some 425 men and women were asked how they spent their lunch breaks and how they felt at the time and afterwards. Roughly half said they spent their breaks on digital devices such as smartphones, while the others enjoyed activities such as chatting with a friend or taking a walk nearby. Both groups said they felt they had got away from work during lunch. However, those who had played on their phones didn’t feel rejuvenated afterwards. They were more likely to say they felt “used up” and “burned out” as the day went on.
The researchers said that multitasking on a smartphone by, for example, listening to music while writing an email, can be mentally exhausting. Even something as seemingly simple as reading the news on a phone takes up more brainpower than reading the same information in a newspaper because of the energy needed to ignore the various links embedded (嵌入) in the article and the advertisements that constantly appear.
The researchers wrote in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, “If employees don’t handle tiredness properly at break time, they will be exhausted by their job demands. Organizational interventions (干预) such as ‘digital detox’ and awareness in employees about the negative effects of smartphone breaks are necessary for employees to find effective relaxation.”
41. What is the purpose of the study conducted by researchers?
A. To find whether people felt exhausted at work.
B. To find how smartphone breaks affected people.
C To find how people spent their lunch breaks.
D. To find whether smartphone breaks were necessary.
42. What can the underlined word “rejuvenated” in Paragraph 2 be replaced by?
A. Ashamed. B. Upset. C. Energetic. D. Interested.
43. According to the text, why might phone use during breaks cause more tiredness?
A. Multitasking on phones takes up more mental energy.
B. People who use phones tend to take less physical exercise.
C. Phones give out harmful blue light that affects sleep quality.
D. Reading news on phones is more time-consuming than reading newspapers.
44. Which activity would the researchers probably recommend for relaxation?
A. Going for a walk nearby.
B. Reading a book on a smartphone.
C. Chatting with friends through social media.
D. Listening to music while replying to emails.
45. What conclusion did the researchers publish in Computers in Human Behavior?
A. Smartphones should be banned in workplaces during breaks.
B. Digital detox is the only way to reduce work-related stress.
C. Employees who use phones are more productive in the afternoon.
D. Proper handling of tiredness during breaks is essential to avoid job burnout.
【答案】41. B 42. C 43. A 44. A 45. D

第四部分:写作 (共两节,满分25分)
第一节:阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When I first arrived in Canada at the age of 16 to go to High School for one year and live with a host family, I was completely over the moon with everything! When the plane finally touched down in Toronto, I was so excited and delighted that I was finally in Canada, something we had been planning for many months.
However, as with the majority of exchange students, I met with the common culture shock (文化冲击) and I was glad I got through it in the end! Here is what has helped me deal better with the culture shock.
Firstly, try to really put yourself out there and make friends! Talk, even when you make mistakes! Develop a routine! Think about how you dealt with stress at home and apply it in the new culture: Yoga, sports, going for a walk, or talking to a dear friend.
Secondly, try to see the good side in everything. Negative thinking is a vicious circle (恶性循环) and can quickly pull you down. Learn to laugh at yourself, as well as at whatever is discouraging you — humour helps you make light of a situation. Always remember to ask yourself: What can I learn from this?
Thirdly, try to acknowledge (承认) the positive aspects of other cultures. It doesn’t mean you have to give up all you have learnt or believed in! It simply widens your horizons (眼界) and helps you communicate between different cultures.
I am still in touch with my host family that I stayed with ten years ago! They have been a great role model to me and helped me a lot. I’m very grateful for their friendship and generosity while I went through culture shock.
46. What does the underlined part “over the moon” probably mean in Paragraph 1? (no more than 3 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
47. Why is it important to acknowledge the positive aspects of other cultures? (no more than 15 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
48. What does the author mainly talk about in the last paragraph? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
49. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage? (no more than 10 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
50. If you meet with culture shock, what is your best way to deal with it? And why? (no more than 25 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】46. Excited and delighted./Very excited./Extremely happy.
47. Because it can widen our horizons and help us communicate between different cultures.
48. Her/His gratitude/thankfulness to the host family.
49. To give tips on dealing with culture shock.
Or: To give tips on how to deal with culture shock.
Or: To share her/his experience of dealing with culture shock.
50. I will try to make friends and develop a routine, because it can help me adapt to the new environment quickly.

When the plane finally touched down in Toronto, I was so excited and delighted that I was finally in Canada, something we had been planning for many months.(当我16岁第一次来到加拿大上高中一年并与寄宿家庭住在一起时,我对一切over the moon! Excited and delighted./Very excited./Extremely happy.
【47题详解】
考查细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Thirdly, try to acknowledge (承认) the positive aspects of other cultures. It doesn’t mean you have to give up all you have learnt or believed in! It simply widens your horizons (眼界) and helps you communicate between different cultures.(第三,试着认可其他文化中优秀的地方。这并不意味着你必须放弃自己一直以来所学、所相信的一切!它只是帮你开阔眼界,让你更擅长在不同文化之间沟通。)”可知,承认其他文化的积极方面很重要是因为它可以拓宽我们的视野,帮助我们在不同文化之间进行交流。故答案为Because it can widen our horizons and help us communicate between different cultures.
【48题详解】

【49题详解】
考查推理判断。通读全文,尤其是根据第二段中“Here is what has helped me deal better with the culture shock.(以下是一些帮助我更好地应对文化冲击的方法。)”以及后文作者给出的应对文化冲击的方法可知,作者写这篇文章的主要目的是给出应对文化冲击的建议。故答案为To give tips on dealing with culture shock./To give tips on how to deal with culture shock./To share her/his experience of dealing with culture shock.
I will try to make friends and develop a routine, because it can help me adapt to the new environment quickly.

Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby and his five sisters and brothers were raised by their stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door to door.
With his family’s support Allamby decided to take science classes he’d need to become a health-care worker.

C. To find how people spent their lunch breaks.
D. To find whether smartphone breaks were necessary.
42. What can the underlined word “rejuvenated” in Paragraph 2 be replaced by?
A. Ashamed. B. Upset. C. Energetic. D. Interested.
