Growing up on the shores of Lake Huron in the Canadian province of Ontario, Robert Berdan was never far from water. When he was in sixth grade, he received a toy microscope for Christmas. Some of the first things he saw through its lens were tiny creatures inside droplets he’d gathered from a local pond. He was fascinated with the microorganisms.
After eighth grade, Berdan upgraded to a more advanced model and realized it was a gateway to another world. “The new microscope changed my life,” he says. “I could see so much more.” He began studying photography and buying cameras to fit on his microscope. He captured images of mushrooms, and trees, and learned how to develop films. He also developed his microscopy skills, so much so that he earned a doctoral degree in cellular biology and spent five years running a lab at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
But Berdan never forgot his two early passions—being involved in nature and photographing its tiny details—and he decided to return to them. His subjects range from snowflakes to spruce trees. To see the latter under a microscope, Berdan collects a small branch and uses specialized tools to shave off paper-thin slices, which he dyes red or blue. For the final images, he often uses a process called focus stacking, in which similar photos with different focal planes are combined to achieve a more profound depth of field, and he sometimes stitches photos together to create panoramas, an impressive view of a wide area.
“I investigate anything that might have possibilities,” he says. And he encourages others to do the same with a microscope. “Any tool that amplifies (放大) our ability to see will enhance our creativity,” he notes. “Our observations can potentially lead to new discoveries and solutions.”
4. How did Berdan find his first experience of using microscope?
A. Upsetting. B. Amusing. C. Engaging. D. Shocking.
5. What can we learn about Berdan from paragraph 3?
A. Berdan creates special images without any effort.
B. Berdan achieves great success in biology.
C. Berdan has his unique way to use microscope.
D. Berden has always been keen on his childhood interests.
6. What does Berdan want to highlight in the last paragraph?
A. The strong power of creativity in our daily life.
B. Our creativity to be enhanced by large tools.
C. The important role that observations play in our life.
D. Everything is possible through careful investigations.
7. Which of the following best describes Robert Berdan?
A. Creative but stubborn. B. Ambitious but careless.
C. Skillful and considerate. D. Persistent and encouraging.
Thousands of people waited in line for hours until 10: 30 am for the grand opening of the Haikou International Duty Free City Shopping Complex (建筑群) — the world’s largest stand-alone duty-free facility.
Located near the key transportation center of Haikou along the northern coast of the island province of Hainan, the shopping area covers an area of 280,000 square meters and features more than 800 notable brands, including five global firsts and more than 50 stores with the world’s latest concept designs.
In 2021, about one in two travelers to the tropical island visited duty-free shops and one in six purchased offshore duty-free goods. As a result, duty free sales in Hainan accounted for about half of the province’s tourism revenue of the year.
Chen Lin, 37, from Jinan, Shandong, was visiting Hainan with her family and found herself attracted to all the shopping options. “The newly opened complex provides adequate stocks of latest products. What’s more, like us, tourists can purchase duty-free goods at good prices. With convenience and favorable policy, an increasing number of customers from outside Hainan will be attracted to come here,” Chen said.
The large complex brings local cultural forces to the front. The facility’s architectural shape is based on the begonia (秋海棠) flower and incorporates elements such as Haikou’s natural characteristics and ocean culture.
Han Yamei, 48, a local, visited the shopping complex and was amazed by its numerous brands and creative design. She couldn’t help asking her daughter to take photos of her. Han said the opening will not only bring shoppers a beautiful experience, but also give a boost to the local economy, adding that, “It’s located next to Xinhai Port, which is very convenient for visitors by ship to come and shop.”
8. What were so many people waiting to do according to paragraph 1?
A. Sell foreign goods. B. Visit unique buildings.
C. Perform a show. D. Attend an important ceremony.
9. What does the underlined word “revenue” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Income. B. Resort. C. Spending. D. Administration.
10. Which of the following can attract tourists most according to Chen Lin?
A Local customs. B. Duty-free goods. C. Natural scenery. D. Pleasant climate.
11. What does Han Yamei think of the shopping complex?
A. It is of little value. B. It requires further proof.
C. It is praiseworthy. D. It is against her guess.
Alibaba started taking the lead in China, simply enough, by connecting big Chinese manufacturers (制造商) with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allowed business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to identify: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its marketplaces attract 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale.
If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing almost a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “You’re looking for what exactly? Why not try it?” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.
Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is secondary to consumer buying. Chinese retail (零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices.
What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S.is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially — in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.
I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how extensive the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.
12. Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in ___________.
A. its big size B. its business-to-business service
C. its not charging small sellers D. its low price
13. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the passage?
A. Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites
B. Alibaba will continue to develop.
C. Alibaba stands out as the best online site.
D. Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers.
14. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. a new store B. Alibaba C. a business D. a foreign website
15. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover.
B. Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites.
C. Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more money than retail now.
D. TMall.com provides more profit than Taobao.
16. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Shopping online is TaoBao.
B. The influence of shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping.
C. Alibaba greatly influences people’s daily purchase in China.
D. How the author purchases online in China.
Four Rules for Successful Plant Cloning
Plant growers have two choices when it comes to starting new plants: growing from seed, or plant cloning. And plant clones offer advantages that growing plants from seed can’t offer. Growing from clones, you’re sure to have all females, and as long as you do the cloning yourself, you know who the mother plant is and how your clones will grow, yield, and get you high. ___17___.
Take your plant cuttings from a healthy mother plant
Plant cloning gives you genetic copies of your mother plant. ___18___, your clones get the best start possibly. Avoid using mother plants that are sick, or that are plagued with pests.
___19___
Most plant clones prefer temperatures slightly higher than your ideal grow room temperature, and they don’t like a day and night cycle with a temperature drop at night. That’s why most growers root their cuttings under lighting that stays on 24 hours a day. The lighting itself creates temperature stabilization. Temperatures between 74 — 77 degrees Fahrenheit are the range you want.
Clones like high humidity
Your cuttings need a humid environment in the 75 — 95% humidity range until they’ve created roots and are able to intake water through them. That’s why many plant cloners use humidity covers. You need to wait your clones have functioning roots. ___20___, they’ll die.
Use sterile equipment and materials
You already figured out that your scissors, knife or other tools for cutting clones has to be clean. But you also want to make sure you trays, cloning covers, and root zone media are clean and sterile too. ___21___. Start fresh every time.
When you follow these plant cloning tips, your clone success rate should be nearly 100%.
A. If they’re in dry air
B. Use kind LED lighting
C. Give your plant clones consistent climate
D. But it’s an art and science to plant cloning
E. Don’t reuse cloning cubes or cloning powders and gels
F. If you’re taking 20 clones and seeing only 10 of them survive
G. If your mother plants are strong, healthy, and have potent genetics
No one would be willing to pay one-third of the price for the packaging or wrapping of what he or she purchases. But over-packaging has become a disease that leads to an ___22___ waste of resources and ___23___ environmental pollution.
The wasted packaging materials are ___24___ to be worth about 280 billion yuan annually. And such packages and wrappings thrown away by customers ___25___ up half of the volume of solid waste in cities. ___26___ , it is high time that regulations were ___27___ to stop enterprises from spending too much on unnecessary packaging and wrapping.
To produce paper packaging or wrapping, many more trees have to be cut down. The simple truth is that the more a producer spends on packaging, the ___28___ the products it sells will be.
Product packaging and wrapping used to be very simple 30 years ago. “Shabby” was the word many had used to ___29___ the way Chinese products were packaged. And shabby packaging was blamed for making Chinese products ___30___ in the international market.
It is ___31___ to pay enough attention to packaging or wrapping products in such a manner that they can be ___32___ to customers’ eyes. But that does not definitely justify that packaging should even outshine what is inside.
In the Chinese idiom “maidu huanzhu”, the buyer returns the pearl and just keeps the case because the ___33___ is too fancy and luxurious. It not only laughs at the poor ___34___ of the buyer, but also criticizes the unnecessary ___35___ the seller has made in making the case. Another message from the idiom is that over-packaging helps cultivate an ___36___ consuming attitude—to buy fancy-looking stuff but not what they really need.

D 18. G 19. C 20. A 21. E

根据上文“Growing from clones, you’re sure to have all females, and as long as you do the cloning yourself, you know who the mother plant is and how your clones will grow, yield, and get you high. (从克隆植物中生长,你肯定会有所有的雌性植物,只要你自己做克隆,你就知道母株是谁,你的克隆植物将如何生长、长成作物,让你兴奋。)”可知,看着自己亲自进行克隆植物会是件令人兴奋的事,D项“But it’s an art and science to plant cloning. (但克隆植物是一门艺术和科学)”,D项与上文之间为转折关系,且有启下的作用,引出下文的四个成功克隆植物的规则,语意顺畅。故选D项。
【18题详解】
本段主题句“Take your plant cuttings from a healthy mother plant (从健康的植物母株上取下插枝)”,关键词为mother plant,上文“Plant cloning gives you genetic copies of your mother plant.
本段第一句“Most plant clones prefer temperatures slightly higher than your ideal grow room temperature, and they don’t like a day and night cycle with a temperature drop at night. (大多数植物克隆体喜欢比理想生长温度略高的温度,它们不喜欢白天和晚上的温度下降周期。)”,根据其中的关键词temperatures可知,本段与克隆植物所需的适宜的稳定的温度有关,最后两句“The lighting itself creates temperature stabilization. Temperatures between 74—77 degrees Fahrenheit are the range you want.(照明本身创造了温度稳定。
故选A项。
上文“You already figured out that your scissors, knife or other tools for cutting clones has to be clean. But you also want to make sure you trays, cloning covers, and root zone media are clean and sterile too. (你已经知道你的剪刀、刀或其他用于切割克隆植物体的工具必须是干净的。但是你也要确保你的托盘,克隆覆盖,和根区介质是干净和无菌的。)”,上文列举了对部分材料的要求;E项“Don’t reuse cloning cubes or cloning powders and gels (不要重复使用克隆方块或克隆粉末和凝胶)”,E项承接上文,话题一致,下文“Start fresh every time. (每次都用新的)”,为总结句,呼应主题句。故选E项。

“There it is!” he said.
Harry moved quickly across the room. He stood and looked at the painting. “A million dollars for this?” he thought. “I don’t understand it.”
But he took a knife from his coat. Then he took the painting very, very slowly from its frame (框架). Harry went back across the room to the window, but he walked into a table. There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell on the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the pieces of glass to the window.
Harry rented (租) a room in Mrs Allen’s house. He went quietly up to his room and closed the door. In his room Harry took the painting from his bag. He wrapped (包) it with a newspaper and put the newspaper under his bed

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He ran after the truck. The recycling truck was already moving down the street, and Harry knew he had to act fast. “Stop! Wait!” he shouted desperately, but the noise of the engine drowned out his voice. The newspaper under his bed — the one that wrapped the stolen painting — was now in that black box, heading for destruction. Harry sprinted harder, his mind racing. If he couldn’t recover it, his entire plan would collapse. Just as the truck slowed at a corner, he lunged forward, grabbing the back door handle. But it was too late — the truck accelerated, leaving him gasping on the sidewalk.
Then Janey called the police on the telephone. She had seen Harry’s frantic chase and connected it with the news report about the lost painting and the broken glass vase. “There’s something suspicious about my tenant,” she told the officer, describing the newspaper she’d taken from under his bed. Minutes later, sirens wailed as police cars surrounded the house. Harry, still panting from his failed attempt, froze when he saw them. “The jig is up,” an officer said, holding up the recovered painting from the recycling center. Janey stared in shock as Harry was handcuffed, realizing she’d unwittingly helped solve the crime. The art gallery’s treasure was safe, thanks to her routine recycling habit.
