Migrant workers((流动工人) on the northern tip of Singapore have the chance to enjoy parties with the help of Project Chulia Street.
Project Chulia Street began in 2016, after co-founder David Goh heard about the difficulties migrant workers faced in Singapore. He noticed that migrant workers “live a separate life from the rest of us”, and wondered how Singaporeans could improve their lives.
The organization focuses on(关注) three aspects — nutrition(营养), healthcare and learning.
It started off as a small project. Someone had donated barramundi fish heads. Three years on, Project Chulia Street now organizes large parties, several times a year, to improve the lives of migrant workers.
Donations from entrepreneurs have made these events possible, says David. The businessmen took part and encourage their workers to volunteer, because they want to show their thanks to migrant workers for their important contribution to building Singapore. These parties also provide a space for Singaporeans and migrant workers to make friends and understand each other.
Ang Huan Ting, a volunteer with Project Chulia Street, believes that migrant workers are more similar to Singaporeans than previously thought. “They have hopes; they have dreams; they have ambitions. But perhaps they don’t have the chance to really show all of this.” She says that everyone can do their part by treating migrant workers with care and respect, to make their experiences in Singapore more enjoyable. “I hope we can provide opportunities to be with them, to build friendships with them, to invite them into our houses,” she adds.
