Why We Are Doing This As many as half of all teenagers now get their news from social media. B San Francisco’s Chinatown is a beautiful, tourist-friendly neighborhood. I’d visited Chinatown a few times while growing up in Northern California, but never as an adult who could fully dive into this unique neighborhood until recently. So I decided to go to San Francisco, curious to explore Chinatown’s amazing shops and designs from a new perspective. My afternoon in Chinatown began at Clay Street. I was traveling with my husband, Ryan, who had never been a tourist in San Francisco before, so it made sense to see where our adventure would take us! We took the downhill path on Clay Street and within a few steps, saw Hang Ah Street. More of a walkable alley (小巷) than a street, Hang Ah was fairly empty except for a few back doors. We were visiting toward the tail end of the Mid-Autumn Festival, so the alleyway showed us our first view of those special traditional Chinese lanterns that Chinatown has become synonymous with (密不可分的). Hanging from the rooftops, they were a lovely introduction to our adventure. We continued down Clay Street not sure where or when to turn left or right, until Waverly Place. We thought Hang Ah was beautiful, but Waverly Place completely stopped us in our tracks. I still remember the look on Ryan’s face; he was completely taken aback, with widened eyes and a camera in hand capturing every moment. Walking down Waverly, we then heard the sound of wooden instruments coming from what appeared to be a music school. Even though I’d been to Chinatown before, there was something wonderful about this day, this street, this music and of course, the person I was traveling with who made it even more special. 4. What decision did the author make? A. To visit Chinatown. B. To open a Chinese store. C. To move to Northern California. D. To meet her husband in San Francisco. 5. What impressed the author at Hang Ah Street? A. The big crowd. B. The colorful rooftops. C. The unique festival lanterns. D. The doors designed in Chinese style. 6. How did Ryan feel when he saw Waverly Place? A Hopeful. B. Excited. C. Confident. D. Relaxed. 7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To share her one-day trip. B. To thank her husband for his support. C. To describe her experiences in a new city. D. To recollect her childhood days in San Francisco. C In addition to Big Ben and the River Thames, the red double-decker (双层的) bus is one of the most famous symbols of London. Yet, how many people know the story standing behind the London bus? The first known “buses” of London were used in 1829 and were horse-drawn, taking people from one place to another just like a taxi service. In 1855 an organisation was formed, called the London General Omnibus Company, to manage all the horse-drawn bus services in London at the time. Later, steam buses appeared. Despite their being faster, the last steam bus ran in London in November 1919, and the roads have since been dominated by the internal combustion engine London buses serve many different purposes. Local buses, for example, are the most common type of bus. They follow specific routes and take people to local places on a daily schedule. Adults have to pay the full price but children under eleven can have free bus travel. The buses come in a variety of models and types, some being double-deckers while others are single. And for those who might have finished somewhere very late, there are night buses. Tour buses are another popular bus service. They are specially designed to take tourists on sightseeing trips to famous landmarks around London. Now, London buses have become so well-known that they have become a large part of the London souvenir industry. There are bus key chains, fridge magnets and many other wonderful souvenirs, all inspired by the famous red buses. So, if you want to buy something to remember your trip to London, the double-decker bus design is always a good idea. Recently, London has introduced a few electric buses, making this a more environmentally friendly choice, but this kind of technology is still being tested to see if it can actually take the place of the buses that are in use today. 8. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about London buses? A. Their popularity. B. Their history. C. Their design. D. Their cost. 9. What can we learn about London’s local buses? A. They are mainly designed for sightseeing trips. B. They follow the routes decided by passengers. C. They are free for a limited time at night. D. They are different in appearance. 10. What does the author want to show by mentioning the souvenir industry? A. London buses are an important part of the local culture. B. London buses should be introduced in other cities. C. London buses create lots of jobs for local people. D. London buses attract many tourists to the city. 11. What can we expect of London buses? A. They will change their color. B. They will serve more areas. C. They will become greener. D. They will be driverless. D A surfer who lost his right leg to a shark attack months ago has amazed people by returning to the waves on his one remaining leg. In a show of remarkable courage, the surfer Kai McKenzie paddled out to the same spot where he had been attacked by a white shark four months earlier, which was quite a rare case. After the initial shock, McKenzie kept his spirits uplifted by his mission to return to the water before the end of the year. The 23-year-old had promised to get back into surfing as soon as he was able to. McKenzie took off his artificial limb (肢) and got back to riding the waves and practicing new moves. He paddled out with focus, catching several waves, jumping on his board with one leg and occasionally steering (控制) it with one hand when it was off course. It’s far from effortless to surf with one leg which causes imbalance, and when he wiped out, he'd only got one leg to swing back up. Supported by family, McKenzie appeared at ease in the same water despite admitting he was a bit nervous because the water looked “exactly like that day”. His bravery and skill while surfing on one foot touched everyone. He later posted his return to the ocean online. “It’s one of the craziest feelings I’ve had! It’s the first time that I’d paddled back in the water where I got bitten,” he wrote. “I sat out there by myself and took it in for a little bit then a bunch of good people surfed with me.” Mark, a surfing champion who lost his right leg due to cancer, mentioned McKenzie’s return to the ocean, saying, “That fear of the shark would have been behind him as he was paddling out. Getting back out there is extremely courageous. McKenzie might not at the top yet, but he’s young and he’ll adapt fast. He has taken his first and biggest step by getting out there.” 12. Why are people amazed by McKenzie? A. He has lost his right leg. B. He rose right where he fell. C. He has a gift for surfing. D. He was attacked by a shark. 13. How did McKenzie manage to surf with only one leg? A. He relied on his artificial limb for support. B. He got help from other surfers in the water. C. He tried new moves and adjusted his techniques. D. He used a special surfboard designed for balance. 14. What was McKenzie’s state of mind when returning to the water? A. Basically relieved. B. Extremely tense. C. Rather unwilling. D. Totally fearless. 15. What do Mark’s words imply about McKenzie’s future? A. He will struggle to surf effectively. B. He is likely to quit surfing due to fear. C He will live with the fear of the shark. D. He is expected to be a promising surfer. Two hundred years after Charles Darwin’s birth, studies have found new details of his life at the University of Cambridge. Soon the game began and for the first thirty minutes, each team seemed to have a chance to win and they took the lead by turns. So tired was Mario Hoefer, the captain of the Charles City High School football team, that he had to stop to catch his breath occasionally during the race. Each time he stopped, his teammates came over to his assistance. Though feeling uncomfortable and worn out, Mario Hoefer pushed on as his team had to fight very hard to protect a slim lead while the New Hampton High School football team attempted a late comeback. About forty minutes later, Mario Hoefer saw his teammates stopping the ball intended for Carter Steinlage, a member of the New Hampton High School football team. Mario Hoefer was about to help his teammates when he noticed that Carter Steinlage went down to the ground, screaming in pain. His eyes were wide open and a look of panic appeared on his face. Hanging from the rooftops, they were a lovely introduction to our adventure.(与其说是一条街道,不如说是一条适于步行的小巷,杭阿巷颇为空旷,只有几扇后门。 根据第四段“We continued down Clay Street, not sure where or when to turn left or right, until Waverly Place. B 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第二段“The first known “buses” of London were used in 1829 and were horse-drawn, taking people from one place to another just like a taxi service. In 1855 an organisation was formed, called the London General Omnibus Company, to manage all the horse-drawn bus services in London at the time. Later, steam buses appeared. Despite their being faster, the last steam bus ran in London in November 1919, and the roads have since been dominated by the internal combustion engine 根据第三段“The buses come in a variety of models and types, some being double-deckers while others are single.(这些公交车有多种型号和类型,有些是双层巴士,而有些则是单层的)”可知,伦敦的本地公交车外观各不相同。 根据倒数第二段“Now, London buses have become so well-known that they have become a large part of the London souvenir industry.(如今,伦敦的公交车已经声名远扬,它们已成为伦敦旅游纪念品产业的重要组成部分)”可知,作者提及纪念品产业意在表明伦敦的公交车是当地文化的重要组成部分。故选A。 根据最后一段“Recently, London has introduced a few electric buses, making this a more environmentally friendly choice, but this kind of technology is still being tested to see if it can actually take the place of the buses that are in use today.(最近,伦敦引入了几辆电动公交车,这使得选择更加环保。但这种技术仍在测试阶段,以确定其是否真的能够取代现有的公交车)”可知,伦敦的公交车将会变得更环保。故选C。 D A surfer who lost his right leg to a shark attack months ago has amazed people by returning to the waves on his one remaining leg. C. He will live with the fear of the shark. D. He is expected to be a promising surfer. B 13. C 14. A 15. 根据第一段“A surfer who lost his right leg to a shark attack months ago has amazed people by returning to the waves on his one remaining leg.(几个月前,一名冲浪者在鲨鱼袭击中失去了右腿,但他却用剩下的一条腿重新回到了海浪中,这让人们感到惊讶)”可知,McKenzie被鲨鱼袭击失去一条腿后又回到原来的地方冲浪,所以让人们感到惊讶的是McKenzie从哪里跌倒就从哪里爬起来的勇气,故选B。 根据第二段“McKenzie took off his artificial limb (肢) and got back to riding the waves and practicing new moves. He paddled out with focus, catchıng several waves, jumping on his board with one leg and occasionally steering (控制) it with one hand when it was off course.(McKenzie取下他的假肢,重新开始冲浪,练习新的动作。他专注地划水,抓住了几次波浪,用一条腿跳上冲浪板,偶尔在偏离航线时用一只手操纵)”可知,McKenzie通过尝试新动作和调整技巧来保持平衡,他用一条腿跳上冲浪板,偶尔用一只手控制方向,故选C。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Supported by family, McKenzie appeared at ease in the same water despite admitting he was a bit nervous because the water looked ‘exactly like that day’.(在家人的支持下,McKenzie在同样的水里表现得很自在,尽管他承认自己有点紧张,因为水看起来‘和那天一模一样’)”可知,尽管McKenzie承认他有点紧张,因为那片水域看起来和他出事的那天一样,但在家人的支持下,他总体上还是比较放松,故选A。 根据最后一段“Getting back out there is extremely courageous. McKenzie might not at the top yet, but he’s young and he’ll adapt fast. He has taken his first and biggest step by getting out there.(回到那里是非常勇敢的。McKenzie也许还不是顶尖的,但他很年轻,很快就能适应。他已经迈出了第一步,也是最大的一步)”可知,Mark认为McKenzie回到海洋中是非常勇敢的,尽管McKenzie还不是顶尖的冲浪者,但他年轻,适应得很快,这意味着Mark相信McKenzie能成为优秀的冲浪者,故选D。 三、阅读七选五:本题共5小题,共12.5分。 Two hundred years after Charles Darwin’s birth, studies have found new details of his life at the University of Cambridge. Christ’s College’s basic food was meat and beer. ___18___. ___19___ Later he described this time as the most joyful of his happy life. That large sum(金额) would have been fairly common for a student at Cambridge in the 19th century. The bills were paid by his wealthy father, Robert Darwin, a doctor. Thanks to the richness, he was able to hire servants to help with the daily life. ___20___ He would be out shooting, collecting beetles, doing his scientific hobbies or visiting friends. He played cards and drank wine at night, just like students always have. A. And thus he had plenty of time for socializing or private study. B. The findings were published on the Internet. C. Filled with excited audience in the stands, the stadium felt like a heated steamer(蒸笼). Every player was wet with sweat even during the warm-ups. All this meant the game would be a tough test of the mind and body for the teams from Charles City High School and New Hampton High School. Judging from Carter Steinlage’s facial expression, Mario Hoefer realized that Carter Steinlage was in a serious condition. American football can be pretty competitive. From tricking opposing teams to fan drama, they are just another part of the game. There have even been violent fights in the name of defending their own team. However, Mario Hoefer decided to show that his love for the sport would not stop him from helping a competitor in need. Mario Hoefer immediately knew what to do. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The moment had been recorded by a viewer and posted on social media. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Mario Hoefer immediately knew what to do. Having made sure Carter was in fact merely experiencing a cramp, he knelt down on the ground and held his left foot, pulling it towards himself to relieve Carter’s pain. Meanwhile, he comforted Carter, “Take it easy. You’ll be all right soon.” Gradually, Carter’s panicked and painful expression began to soften. When his teammates and trainer made it to him, he had recovered. Carter rose to his feet, giving Mario a big hug to express his heartfelt gratitude. The game continued, no body realizing the moment had been captured by a viewer in the stands. The moment had been recorded by a viewer and posted on social media. Surprisingly, it received a flood of supportive responses. Thousands of netizens sang high praise for Mario’s act of kindness. Many thought what he did showed the true sportsmanship on the field and that the world needed to see more of such touching pictures. Mario didn’t expect his instinctive action would arouse such a big reaction, saying modestly, “It was no big deal to step in to stretch Carter’s leg out. It was more like a brotherly thing to help him out.” Mario and Carter, the two former opponents, have since become sincere friends, whose story convinces people of the true spirit of sports. 3.词类激活: 行为类: 减轻:relieve/ease/reduce 恢复:recover/make a recovery 表达:express/deliver/show 情绪类: 感人的:touching/affecting/heart-warming 感激:gratitude/appreciation/thankfulness 恐慌的:panicked/panic-stricken/scared/frightened 【点睛】【高分句型1】 Having made sure Carter was in fact merely experiencing a cramp, he knelt down on the ground and held his left foot, pulling it towards himself to relieve Carter’s pain.(运用了现在分词作状语。) 2】 Mario and Carter, the two former opponents, have since become sincere friends, whose story convinces people of the true spirit of sports.(运用了whose引导非限制性定语从句。)
