I’m an immigrant from China, and I found that in Quebec I had to learn French, which was a totally strange language to me. After waiting for half a month, I received a letter from my school, St-luc, and began learning French in a welcome class, which is a class for new immigrants. Even though French was rather hard for me to speak and to understand, I began my secondary five studies the next year.
The first few days were terrible, especially the first class of the first day. Although I had been in St- Luc for one year, I still didn’t know much about the school. The first problem that I had was finding my classroom. Luckily, I met a girl who was in my French class and my chemistry class.
After the bell rang, the teacher, Mme. Zarif, began her class. First, she introduced herself to everyone and then gave us the course outline for the first year. During her class, everyone laughed many times. Although I could only understand a little bit, I could tell that she was very funny.
At the end of her speech, to make sure that we did not forget what we had learned in secondary four, Mme. Zarif gave us a paper with many symbols of elements on it and asked us to write their names in French. I was shocked when I received the paper. Honestly, the only symbol I knew was O. After having stared at the paper for a few minutes, I gave up and raised my hand. The teacher came, and I told her that I didn’t know anything.
“You have forgotten everything already?” she said in an astonished tone. “No,” I answered, “I have never learned them in French before. I am from the welcome class,” “Oh,” the teacher said with a look of understanding. “Come here after school. I will teach them to you.”
I agreed. Finally, I handed in the paper with only one answer on it. On the whole, my first day of secondary five was a little embarrassing but, at the same time, interesting.
4. Why did the author have to learn French in Quebec?
A. She was interested in French culture. B. It was required for her secondary studies.
C. Her school only offered French courses. D. She was an immigrant and needed to learn French.
5. How did the students feel about Mme. Zarif’s class?
A. Funny B. Confusing C. Indifferent D. Boring
6. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. The author’s French level improved greatly after the first day.
B. Mme. Zarif was patient with international students.
C. The welcome class failed to teach basic French knowledge.
D. The author found secondary five studies extremely easy.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The challenges of learning French as an immigrant
B. The author’s experience in a welcome class for immigrants
C. The author’s first day of secondary five studies in Quebec
D. The help from Mme. Zarif in learning French

The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora which is 161km west of Cusco, it’s an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travelers camp for the night. Waking early, travelers then have to cross the Apurimac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins (废墟) . Then, the next morning, it’s another 2km walk up to the ruins, 3, 100m above sea level. To get back? Well, it’s the same way you came.
“I’ve had people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company, “But some people come out thinking that because it’s only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day. Six or seven days for the hike is best.”
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season (June through August) . Compare that to the 2, 500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu. But for those who make the journey, the rewards are great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about this lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car (缆车) to Choquequirao will shorten the several- day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride. As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3, 000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Diaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you’re the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travelers flood in?
8. What makes the hike to Choquequirao difficult?
A. The high altitude (海拔) of the ruins alone B. The long distance and ups and downs of the way
C. The lack of guides and camping facilities (设施) D. The dangerous river crossing without any help
9. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The hike to Choquequirao B. The drop off point of the journey
C. The 28km distance from the drop off D. The visit to Machu Picchu
10. How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A. They have been forgotten completely. B. They are in poor condition.
C. They have attracted a great number of visitors. D. They need further exploration.
11. We can learn from the passage that Choquequirao ________.
A. is better known than Machu Picchu B. has more written records than Machu Picchu
C. will probably attract more visitors in the future D. was discovered later than Machu Picchu
D
Livestreaming (直 播 ) through platforms such as Amazon Live and TikTok is an increasingly popular way to sell goods online. It usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes, and someone promotes a product. Viewers can then readily buy it by just clicking on a link.
We analyzed ( 分析 ) 99,451 sales cases on a livestream selling platform and matched them with actual sales cases. In terms of time, that is equal to over 2 million 30-second television advertisements.
To determine the emotional ( 情绪的 ) expression of the salesperson, we used two deep learning models: a face model and an emotion model. The face model discovers the presence or absence of a face in a frame of a video stream. The emotion model then determines the probability that a face is exhibiting any of the six basic human emotions: happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, fear or disgust. For example, smiling signals a high probability of happiness, while an off-putting expression usually points toward anger.
We wanted to see the effect of emotions expressed at different times in the sales cases so we counted probabilities for each emotion for all 62 million frames in our database. We then combined these probabilities with other possible aspects that might drive sales — such as price and product characteristics — to judge the effect of emotion.
We found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, when salespeople show more negative emotions — such as anger and disgust — the volume of sales went down. But we also found that a similar thing happened when the salespeople show high levels of positive emotions, such as happiness or surprise.
A likely explanation based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.
12. What does Paragraph 1 tell about livestreaming sales?
A. It increases the prices of products.
B. It helps sellers save money on ad.
C. It makes shopping convenient for buyers.
D. It promotes better buyer-seller relationship.
13. What does the underlined word “off-putting” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Uneasy. B. Unpleasant.
C. Lively. D. Strange.
14. How do customers feel about the seller’s smiling?
A. They feel respected. B. They feel satisfied.
C. They feel cheated. D. They feel trusted.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully
B. Expressions Influence Online Product Sales
C. Emotions: Means of Communication
D. Smiling: A Way to Increase Sales

Jenny Wells was seated on a Delta Airlines flight from New York to Boston when a flight attendant asked an urgent question over the loudspeaker: “Does anyone know ASL (美式手语) ?”
Jenny, 16 at the time, pressed the call button. The flight attendant approached and explained that a passenger on the plane, who was blind and deaf, seemed to want something. But he was traveling alone and the flight attendants couldn’t figure out what he needed.
Jenny had been studying ASL for the past year to help with her dyslexia (阅读障碍) and knew she’d be able to use the finger to spell into the man’s palm (手掌) . So she walked toward the front of the plane, and knelt beside the aisle (过道) seat of Tim Cook, then 65 years old. Gently taking his hand, she spelled, “Are you OK?” Cook asked for some water. When it arrived, Jenny returned to her seat. Then she came by again because he wanted to know the time. Eventually, on her third visit, she stopped and stayed awhile. Jenny found that he didn’t need anything. He was lonely and just wanted to talk.
So for the next hour, that’s what they did. She talked about her family and her plans for the future, while Cook told Jenny how he had become blind and deaf over time and shared stories of his days as a travelling salesman. Though he couldn’t see her, she “looked at his face with such kindness,” a passenger reported.
“Jenny was amazing,” a flight attendant told Delta Airlines in a blog interview. “You could tell Tim was excited to have someone he could speak to, and she was such an angel.”
Cook’s reaction to this experience: “Best trip I’ve ever had. ”
The captain’s announcement of impending landing interrupted their conversation.

The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco, it’s an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travelers camp for the night.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. C

A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller. A seller’s happiness may be taken as a sign that the seller is gaining interests at the customer’s expense.
12. What does Paragraph 1 tell about livestreaming sales?
A. It increases the prices of products.
B. It helps sellers save money on ad.
C It makes shopping convenient for buyers.
D. It promotes better buyer-seller relationship.
13. What does the underlined word “off-putting” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Uneasy. B. Unpleasant.
C. Lively. D. Strange.
14. How do customers feel about the seller’s smiling?
A. They feel respected. B. They feel satisfied.
C. They feel cheated. D. They feel trusted.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Livestreamers Sell Products Successfully
B. Expressions Influence Online Product Sales
C. Emotions: Means of Communication
D. Smiling: A Way to Increase Sales
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. C 15. B

根据文章最后一段“A likely explanation, based on our research, is that smiling can be disgusting because it lacks true feelings and can reduce trust in the seller.(根据我们的研究,一个可能的解释是,微笑可能令人厌恶,因为它缺乏真实的感情,会降低对卖家的信任)”可推知,顾客对销售者的微笑感觉是他们感觉被骗了。

Gratitude is good for your health.
Through his research, Emmons found that grateful people reported feeling healthier and happier, both mentally and physically. ___17___ In the workplace, employees who are shown that they are appreciated are healthier and more productive by 50 percent.

Gratitude helps us build strong relationship.
Gratitude is a powerful tool for strengthening relationship, both at work and in your personal life. People who express their gratitude tend to be more willing to forgive others and therefore able to create long-lasting connections.

【18题详解】
本题设空处为段落小标题,结合已知的三个小标题可知,标题要说明的是感恩的益处;根据标题下方的“Gratitude is a selfless act. ”(感恩是无私的行为。)及“Those who recognize the goodness in life, no matter how simple, are more likely to be sensitive to the needs of others and to help whenever they can. Thinking about other’s opinion, experiences and backgrounds will make you a better person.”(那些认识到生活中美好事物的人,无论多么简单,都更有可能对他人的需求保持敏感,并尽可能地提供帮助。
根据下文“It starts by paying attention to what’s now going on in your life, and that’s true self-awareness is the key to being successful.”(它从关注你生活中正在发生的事情开始,这就是真正的自我意识是成功的关键。)可知,我们要对关注当下的生活,并且自我意识是成功的关键;E选项中的“ reflect (反思) in the moment”与下文的paying attention to what’s now going on in your life对应,下文的It指的是就是E选项所说的“感恩让你反思当下,而不是总是思考未来”这件事,所以E选项符合题意。故选E项。
【20题详解】

【答案】Internet and Friendship
The Internet has greatly changed our way of making friends. It helps us connect with people who share the same hobbies easily, no matter how far they are. We can chat and support each other anytime.
However, online friendship also has problems. We may not know the real information of the persons online, so sometimes we get cheated or misled.
In my opinion, the Internet is a good tool to build friendship. But we should be careful. We’d better not give out personal information easily and meet online friends in safe places.

As they reached the gate, a woman in her thirties rushed over, calling “Dad! ” excitedly.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The captain’s announcement of impending landing interrupted their conversation. Jenny gently held Tim’s hand and spelled into his palm in a soft voice that the plane was about to land. She comforted him, saying she would stay with him until he met his family. Tim felt deeply warm and grateful. He spelled slowly that he had never imagined such a kind girl would accompany him and drive away his loneliness. For the first time in years, he did not feel scared or lonely on a trip.
As they reached the gate, a woman in her thirties rushed over, calling “Dad! ” excitedly. She was Tim’s daughter, who had been worried about his journey. The moment she learned what Jenny had done for her father, tears filled her eyes. She held Jenny’s hands tightly and thanked her again and again. The passengers and flight attendants all smiled, moved by the heartwarming scene. Jenny said it was just a small thing. In fact, kindness had not only connected the strangers but also made the ordinary trip become the most unforgettable memory for everyone.
