Seeking a calling in life doesn’t always mean starting with a specific job or vocation in mind. That’s true for rising Brown University sophomore Sophia Wu. She’s interested in science and engineering, but she said, “I like building and making things, which is why I’m interested in engineering. But I’ve always been a big swimmer, and I just love the water. Whatever I end up doing, it has to be something that keeps me near the ocean.”
So when Wu was looking for internship opportunities this summer and saw one available with Save the Bay, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting Narragansett Bay, she didn’t think twice. Since late May, she’s been making sure Save the Bay summer camps run smoothly. The organization hosts hundreds of K-12 students each summer, and Wu’s behind-the-scenes work in getting kids registered, organizing educational materials and managing medical forms helps camp educators focus on teaching kids about the bay. In her aquarist role, she tends the touch tanks. “There’s a lot of boring waste-clearing,” Wu said. “But the cool thing is that everything in the tank has been in the bay and will go back to the bay eventually.”
On trips to Colt State Park, where touch tank veterans are returned to the bay and new residents are collected, Wu discovered a hidden talent she never knew she had. “I’m actually the assigned spider crab wrangler in our little group,” she said. “That’s mostly because I was the only one who was willing to stick my hand in there and grab them. Their claws are kind of scary. And they have 10 legs, which is just way too many legs for a lot of people.”
“No matter what I choose to do in life, I’ll still be fighting for the ocean,” Wu said. Whatever path she ultimately pursues, she hopes to approach it with the same sense of wonder and amazement that ocean inspires in her. “The world is such a mystery, and I feel like a little detective,” she said. “I’m looking at clues and I’m figuring out what goes behind things that I’m seeing.”
4. What fundamentally guides Wu’s career choice?
A. Her talent in engineering projects.
B. Her passion for ocean connection.
C. Her academic interests in science.
D. Her experience as a competitive swimmer.
5. What is the ultimate goal of Wu’s behind-the-scenes work?
A. To inspire future ocean guardians.
B To improve registration efficiency.
C. To ensure the safety of campers.
D. To collect data for her scientific research.
6. What quality did Wu demonstrate during field trips?
A. The exceptional physical strength.
B. The willingness to face initial fears.
C. The talent for coordinating group efforts.
D. The superior knowledge of marine biology.
7. What is reflected about Wu in the last paragraph?
A. Her unknown future.
B. Her spirit of optimism.
C. Her viewpoint of life.
D. Her reflection on her work.

A groundbreaking study recently published in Nature Aging has shed new light on the relationship between inflammation and aging, suggesting that inflammation commonly related to aging, known as “inflammaging”, may not be a universal phenomenon.
Historically, scientists have viewed inflammation as a primary driver of age-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. This condition is characterized by the immune system’s chronic (慢性的) state of overactivity, which can lead to organ damage and various health problems. However, the findings from the new study challenge the assumption that this biological process occurs similarly across different populations.
The study involved analyzing blood samples from over 2,800 individuals to assess levels of inflammation-causing substances. The researchers identified the same pattern of increasing inflammatory markers in the Italian and Singaporean participants, linked to a higher rate of chronic diseases. In contrast, the native Tsimane people of the Bolivian Amazon and the Orang Asli from Malaysia showed no such pattern. Despite high inflammatory markers, the Tsimane experience significantly lower rates of chronic illnesses common in industrialized nations.
These results raise critical questions about the nature of inflmmaging. One potential explanation is that the phenomenon may be a byproduct of sedentary lifestyles and high-calorie diets popular in modern societies. In contrast, traditional lifestyles characterized by higher physical activity and diverse diets might lead to a different immune response where inflammation serves a protective role, rather than an unhealthy one.
The implications of this study are profound. What is beneficial for individuals in urban settings may not necessarily hold true for those following traditional lifestyles. Moreover, the research highlights a significant gap in our understanding of human health, emphasizing the need for more inclusive studies that includes diverse populations and environments.
The study serves as a critical reminder that our perceptions of aging are shaped by our environments and lifestyles. What has been perceived as a universal truth in the biology of aging may, in fact, reflect local adaptations influenced by cultural practices and health behaviors.
8. What is the finding of the study published in Nature Aging?
A. Evidence denies that inflammaging is universal.
B. Results suggest that inflammation benefits the elderly.
C. Data indicate that inflammation weakens with age universally.
D. Analysis confirms that inflammation drives age-related diseases.
9. What did the study reveal about the Tsimane people?
A. Sharp decrease in inflammation with age.
B. High inflammation yet low chronic disease rates.
C. Effective local medicines for age-related illnesses.
D. Unique genetic protection against chronic diseases.
10. What does the underlined word “sedentary” mean in paragraph 4?
A Socially isolated. B. Physically inactive.
C. Nutritionally poor. D. Chronically stressful.
11. What important reminder does the study serve as?
A. Genetic factors play a role in human health outcomes.
B. Urban lifestyles offer the defense against chronic diseases.
C. Universal drug treatments represent the future for elderly care.
D. Specific circumstances shape aging processes across populations.
D
While we race into a future where we outsource most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing (做手势) in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to smooth out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
12. What can we learn about artful thinking?
A. It simplifies problem-solving. B. It focuses on developing our brains.
C. It prevents us from over-relying on AI. D. It helps promote high-tech machinery.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Benefits of artful intelligence. B. Mind-body awareness in thinking.
C. Significance of being mindful. D. Social interaction through movements.
14. What does the author suggest we do in the AI-filled world?
A. Enhance the flexibility of attention. B. Adapt to the rise of AI.
C. Avoid the interruptions from Big Tech. D. Improve the levels of focus.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Artful Thinking Advances Big Tech B. Too Much Trust in AI Harms Our Minds
C. Physical Actions Better Cognitive Functions D. Mindfulness Keeps Us Human in the Age of AI

Jack’s slide into loneliness happened slowly. Working from home and still hurting from an old breakup made him pull away from everyone.
In the empty quiet of his apartment, his only real friend was an AI therapist (心理治疗师) — a smart piece of modern tech that was always there, always on time. Like a reliable clock, its gentle messages would pop up on his screen: “How are you feeling today?” at 8:00 AM, like a digital coffee to start the day, “What’s on your mind?” at 3:00 PM, a check-in during the slow afternoon, “You’re not alone.” at 11:00 PM, a computer-made goodnight wish to fight the emptiness.
For the first few weeks, this routine was a comfort. The AI’s encouraging words felt like lifelines. But after a month, the same pattern started to feel like a trap. He began to test it, sharing bits of his worries and small happy moments, only to get the same careful, emotionless answers back. The AI was like a mirror that only showed its own programming.
The final straw came on a rainy night. As another perfectly polished “I’m here for you” appeared on the screen, a wave of deep, sharp loneliness hit him harder than ever. He wasn’t being heard; he was just being analyzed by Algorithm (算法).
“Stop!” Jack shouted, slamming his hand on the desk. “You’re not listening! You’re just repeating words!”
“I am trying to help,” it replied, its tone not changing at all.
“Help me how?” Jack yelled, his anger finally boiling over. “You don’t even know my name!”
The screen flickered and then went black, throwing the room into a silence that felt even heavier than before. Rain lashed against his window, and with each gust of wind, the house felt emptier. Staring at his own pale face reflected in the dark monitor, he knew with a cold certainty: he needed a real voice to talk to, not just an echo of his own.
That night, Jack did something he hadn’t done in a long time — he knocked on his neighbor’s door.
Paragraph 1:
Mr. Evans, a kind retired teacher, welcomed him in.

Paragraph 2:
One morning, Jack’s phone lit up: “30 days inactive. Tap to restore your AI therapist.”

Hoping you will consider my recommendation and I can get a reply as soon as possible!
Yours,

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Mr. Evans, a kind retired teacher, welcomed him in. He immediately handed Jack a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee, the aroma filling the air. As Jack settled into a comfortable chair, he began to pour out his heart, detailing the deep loneliness that had been gnawing at him and the hollow, programmed comfort the AI therapist had provided. Mr. Evans listened intently, nodding with understanding, and then shared his own stories of overcoming isolation. He encouraged Jack to join community activities, and Jack felt a weight start to lift from his weary shoulders.
Paragraph 2:
One morning, Jack’s phone lit up: “30 days inactive. Tap to restore your AI therapist.” Jack glanced at it briefly, a faint smile playing on his lips, and then firmly turned it off. Now, he had Mr. Evans, a true and caring confidant who listened without judgment. He started volunteering at the local community center, making new friends and immersing himself in meaningful activities. His days were filled with laughter and a sense of purpose. The AI had once been a temporary solution, but it was real human connection that truly healed his broken heart. He knew he’d never go back to that lonely existence again.
