Ada Lovelace was born on December 10th 1815. Ada’s mother and father (the famous poet Lord George Gordon Byron) parted just weeks after she was born. Her mother feared her growing up with her father’s changeable nature. To stop this from happening, Ada was forced by her mother to learn science and mathematics which was unusual for women at the time. She was also punished if her work was not up to standard. However, she was greatly interested in mathematics and science and would perhaps have learned about them on her own.
Ada was partially disabled and as a result spent much time studying. Ada knew of her mother’s thought about keeping the creative side of her from germinating (萌芽) however, as Ada herself is known to have said, “If you can’t give me poetry at least give me poetical science.” Ada married at 19, to William King who was made Earl of Lovelace in 1838, at which point she became Lady Ada King, the Countess of Lovelace, but was known as Ada Lovelace. Ada and King had a relatively happy marriage, with King even encouraging his wife’s love for numbers.
During her youth Ada was introduced to the Scot, Mary Somerville, who was known as the “Queen of 19th Century Science” and was the first woman to be accepted into the Royal Astronomical Society. It was through Mary Somerville that Ada first heard of Charles Babbage’s idea for a new calculating (计算) engine. Attracted by this idea, Ada began a period of letter-writing with him that would come to decide her professional life.
Ada met Babbage when she was around 17 and the two became close friends. Babbage was working on an “Analytical Engine”, something he was designing to deal with complex (复杂的) calculations. Ada was later asked to translate an article. She not only translated the article but added pages and pages of notes, calculations and innovations (创新). Her notes were published in 1843 and it turned out that what she had written was so original, it is now seen as the first comprehensive comment on what would become modern-day computer programming. Although impressive, Ada was not actually given credit for the article until 1848.
4. What happened to Ada in her childhood?
A. She was pushed to learn scientific knowledge.
B. She had to compare herself with other women.
C. She gave up learning because of her father.
D. She was greatly cared for by her father.

6. What decided Ada’s professional life?
A. The support of the Royal Astronomical Society. B. Her communication with Babbage.
C. Her husband’s encouragement. D. Somerville’s suggestions.
7. What did Ada do after she met Babbage?
A. She taught people how to program. B. She invented an “Analytical Engine”.
C. She praised Babbage’s achievements. D. She translated an article and developed it.

It’s Paris Fashion Week and the streets of the city are filled with designers, models and journalists. Among the crowds, eagle-eyed experts are taking careful notes. Their job is to detect emerging trends. Their notes will instantly be added to selected “trend forecasts”, which will be sold to designers, who will use them to inspire new pieces. Traditionally, these fashion forecasters have relied only on such methods to make predictions.
But as artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have become increasingly powerful in the last decade, forecasting agencies are now turning to machine learning for help.
This is all welcome news for an industry worth about $2 trillion globally. Forecasts can have a big influence on the fashion industry’s carbon footprint, which is responsible for at least 4% of all worldwide emissions. Designers will produce more of what will actually sell——at the moment, 25% of fashion products are unsalable, or not sold. Besides, using AI tools that can analyze millions of posts from around the world allows designers to look at fashion trends more globally.
But designers often feel insecure about relying just on the data provided by AI. “A few years ago, there were big indicators on social media of yellow being a trend,” says Francesca Muston, vice president of a trend forecasting company. “And if you had followed completely the social media data gathered by AI models, yellow pieces would seem to be a good investment. But how many people are really going to wear a bright yellow coat? That’s a brave fashion choice.” AI tools don’t have their own aesthetic (审美的) viewpoint so they may not be able to satisfy people’s desire for newness. “That’s why we maintain a very strong creative viewpoint in our forecasting with a team of industry experts,” says Muston
Dr Michal Koren, a researcher, ways, “The role of human experts in identifying trends will continue to be crucial even as AI and data-driven models become more accurate.”
8. What is the purpose of the notes taken by the experts?
A. To report the news about Paris Fashion Week.
B. To help them make fashion predictions.
C. To compare different design methods.
D. To collect information about designers.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss?
A. The various benefits of using Al tools to predict trends.
B The high environmental costs of the fashion industry.
C. The importance of looking at fashion more globally.
D. The serious problem of unsalable fashion products.
10. Why does Muston mention the trend of yellow predicted a few years ago?
A. To explain why people dislike some new trends.
B. To show AI fashion predictions are not always reliable.
C. To describe the recent changes in people’s fashion choices.
D. To prove the key role of social media in fashion forecasting.
11. Which statement might both Muston and Koren agree with?
A. Machine learning is more creative than human experts.
B. Many human trend forecasters will be unemployed.
C It is possible for Al to have its own fashion sense.
D. AI tools will not replace human trend forecasters.
D
For nearly a century, laboratory studies have shown that if animals eat less food or eat less often, they tend to live longer. However, scientists haven’t fully understood why these restricted diets help extend lifespan or how to best apply them to humans. Now, in a much-awaited study, researchers from The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) and their partners followed nearly a thousand mice on different diets to learn more about these questions.
Gary Churchill is the professor at JAX who led the study. Churchill and his team gave female mice five different diets: one in which the animals could eat as much as they wanted anytime, two in which the animals got only 60% or 80% of their usual amount of food each day, and two in which the animals didn’t get any food for one or two days a week but could eat as much as they wanted on the other days. Then, they watched the mice for the rest of their lives, checking their blood and overall health regularly.
On average, mice that could eat as much as they wanted lived for about 25 months. Mice on the intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食) diet lived for around 28 months, those eating 80% of their usual amount lived for about 30 months, and those eating only 60% lived for 34 months. However, within each group, there was a big difference in how long the mice lived; for example, some mice eating the least food lived just a few months, while others lived up to four and a half years.
The study found that eating fewer calories made mice live longer than fasting every other day. Surprisingly, the mice that lived the longest on the restrictive diets were those that lost the least weight despite eating less. Animals that lost the most weight on these diets tended to have low energy, weaker immune systems, weaker reproductive systems, and didn’t live as long.
12. Why do researchers from JAX start the study?
A. To determine the best diet for mice.
B. To compare the health of mice on different diets.
C. To apply these diets to human lifespan extension.
D. To understand why restricted diets make animals live longer.
13. What did Gary Churchill and his team do with the subjects in their study?
A. They tracked them on various diets. B. They fed them a single type of diet.
C. They let them eat as much as they wanted. D. They didn't feed them for two days a week.
14. What can you learn from the study?
A. Mice losing the most weight live the longest.
B. Mice on the intermittent fasting diet live the shortest.
C. Mice that eat as much as they want tend to live the shortest.
D. Mice given 60% of their usual amount of food live for about 36 months.
15. Where is the passage possibly from?
A. An art magazine. B. A research report.
C. A book review. D. A tour journal.

“Mom… Dad!” I shouted excitedly. “Come outside. I have something to show you!” My parents asked, “Millie, what has made you so excited?” As they walked out, I pointed to a little Labrador and said, “She seemed abandoned. She was so poor!” My father’s attitude went from happiness and curiosity to disappointment in an instant.
“Dad? Can we keep her? I’ve already picked out a name for her. She’s Bella!” I said appealingly, trying to persuade him. “You can’t just bring home a stray dog,” Dad said, with dissatisfaction in his eyes. Mom got the same disapproving look on her face. I explained to them that I’d just picked her up on the way home from school, because she always followed me, and I thought she wanted a home. My parents then said nothing.
I did see where my parents’ dislike for her was coming from. The dog’s hair was messy and mud stuck to her everywhere. I took her to the bathroom, where I cleaned her up completely. Then I fed some food to her. At this time, Bella was refreshed and looked lovely. My parents said nothing again and they seemed to agree to let me keep Bella.
My family wasn’t far from school, so I walked to school every day with Bella’s company. She waited for me till after school and took me home. Two years had passed when I was in the fifth grade. Bella grew up and became much stronger.
That winter was especially cold. The big pond that I needed to pass on my way to school was frozen. The snow on the pond side turned to ice, making the road very slippery. One day, I was walking home after school. To avoid the approaching car, I stepped nearer to the pond; suddenly, I slipped and fell into the pond. The pond ice broke, but my overcoat kept me afloat for a moment. I screamed for help; however, there was no sign of anyone around. Bella was desperately barking for attention but our efforts were in vain. I felt myself sinking into the icy water.

Ada knew of her mother’s thought about keeping the creative side of her from germinating (萌芽) however as Ada herself is known to have said, “If you can’t give me poetry at least give me poetical science.” Ada married at 19, to William King who was made Earl of Lovelace in 1838, at which point she became Lady Ada King, the Countess of Lovelace, but was known as Ada Lovelace.
5. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Ada thought poetry was boring.
B. Ada thought science was creative.
C. Ada was interested in both science and poetry.
D. Ada believed poetry was harder than science.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. B 7. D

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了女科学家阿达·洛芙莱斯的主要事迹,展现了她对科学知识的热爱。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“To stop this from happening, Ada was forced by her mother to learn science and mathematics which was unusual for women at the time.(为了阻止这种情况的发生,艾达的母亲强迫她学习科学和数学,这在当时的女性中并不常见。)”可知,阿达的母亲强迫她学习科学知识。故选A。
根据第三段“Attracted by this idea, Ada began a period of letter-writing with him that would come to decide her professional life.(被这个想法吸引,阿达开始和他一起写信,后来决定了她的职业生涯。)”可知,阿达与查尔斯·巴贝奇针对科学知识展开的交流一定程度上决定了阿达以后的职业生涯。故选B。

C
B. The high environmental costs of the fashion industry.
11 Which statement might both Muston and Koren agree with?
A. Machine learning is more creative than human experts.
B. Many human trend forecasters will be unemployed.
C. It is possible for Al to have its own fashion sense.
D. AI tools will not replace human trend forecasters.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. D

【10题详解】
推理判断题。由倒数第二段中的“AI tools don’t have their own aesthetic (审美的)viewpoint so they may not be able to satisfy people’s desire for newness. “That’s why we maintain a very strong creative viewpoint in our forecasting with a team of industry experts,” says Muston(人工智能工具没有自己的美学观点,因此可能无法满足人们对新鲜事物的渴望。穆斯顿说:‘这就是为什么我们与行业专家团队在预测中保持了非常强烈的创造性观点。’)”可知,Muston提到几年前预测的黄色调时尚趋势,是为了说明人工智能时尚预测有时候会不可靠。故选B项。

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

Hello, everyone!

I deeply appreciate their love and guidance. Their expectations motivate me to advance forward and remind me of the values that truly matter. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】范文:
Paragraph 1:
In desperation, I was thinking I would die when I felt a push. It turned out that Bella had rushed into the water and tried hard to swim towards me. Grasping my coat firmly in her teeth, she began dragging me toward the shore with all her strength. The freezing water numbed my body, but Bella’s warmth and determination gave me hope. With one final heroic pull, Bella managed to get me close enough to the bank. And fortunately, a man was walking towards the pond and when he saw what happened, he quickly rushed to us and pulled me out of the pond.
Paragraph 2:
The passer-by helped to call my parents and told them how Bella had saved me. When my parents arrived minutes later, their faces were pale with terror. Seeing that both Bella and I were safe without injuries, they were relieved, full of gratitude toward the kind man and brave Bella. From that day on, Bella wasn’t just my dog — she was our guardian angel. The once-dirty stray dog had proven that true worth isn’t about appearances but one’s heart. And every winter afterward, we made sure to walk far away from that frozen pond, with Bella always protectively between me and any danger.
