【原文】 M: Our days are filled with a million small interruptions. And this is true even of our days off. Maybe you’ve taken a call at the beach or emailed a colleague while on a picnic with your family. And in my research, employees who were paid for their performance spent increasingly less time with friends and family, and more and more time with colleagues and customers. There are smart strategies we can take to better protect our time. One specific strategy we can take is to treat our weekend like a vacation. Maybe you can buy a bottle of wine and watch TV shows. Maybe you’ll visit a local café and listen to some live music. Or maybe you can go for a long walk in the middle of the day without your phone. The plan doesn’t have to be expensive. Another strategy you can take is to create a clear edge for your time off. Instead of saying, “I’m out of the office.” say, “I’ll be offline. Call me only if it’s urgent.” Lastly, you can fight for more time to prevent work from taking up your personal life. If your customer asks for work to be done on Monday morning, ask for a delay until Tuesday afternoon, so you won’t find yourself working on weekends. These small but powerful changes can not only reshape rest, but also get it back.

Eric Williams has set his sights on making his city, Philadelphia, safer for kids like his son,Elijah, with autism (自闭症). He is doing this by installing special street signs across the city that get drivers to slow down for the benefit of kids with autism, as well as all kids in the community. Thanks to the efforts of Williams, local residents are likely to have spotted many yellow and black street signs that read “AUTISTIC PERSON AREA”.
Successfully advocating for the signs, and building a system to put them into practice took just over a year. Significantly, these signs are there because a person with autism may cross the street with little warning. Learning road safety is more challenging for autistic children.
Project Elijah Empowering Autism (PEEA), a nonprofit organization, was established by Williams in 2004. Families interested in having a sign installed nearby can fill out an online application. Williams launched the form at the start of 2024, and by April, about 400 applications had already been received.
One of these street signs went up outside the workplace of Jamila, a local woman running a nonprofit offering after-school activities to 12 children with autism. She says, “We have a little boy: when he gets picked up, he instantly runs out into the street. We have school buses that drop the kids off here. You get cars that fly by. Now the street signs provide another level of security for the kids.”
Consequently, Williams’s nonprofit is about more than driving the provision of more street signs to help kids with autism. PEEA hosts free, year-round education, and recreation programs for families living with autism. It also organizes food, clothing, and other essential distributions, and provides helpful resources that the community can use to build children’s confidence and independence, and raise their awareness.
24. What is Williams’s goal of installing special street signs?
A. To provide directions for lost drivers. B. To improve autistic children’s safety.
C. To beautify the streets in Philadelphia. D. To make traffic better in the rush hour.
25. How can families request the installation of special street signs?
A. By sending a letter to Williams. B. By joining a nonprofit organization.
C. By completing an application form online. D. By contacting the government directly.
26. What did Jamila’s words imply?
A. To show the positive impact of the street signs.
B. To highlight the dangers faced by autistic children.
C. To emphasize the difficulty in learning road safety.
D. To illustrate the challenges encountered by nonprofits.
27. What do we know about PEEA from the last paragraph?
A. It is highly profitable now. B. It has expanded its service.
C. It will spread to more cities. D. It mainly offers material aid.

Surfing the internet through social media can feel like a nightmare these days. You’re reading about the horrors of the war, and then you’re learning about the latest devastating climate news. It can feel like everything is falling apart. This, of course, can have a significant effect on your mental health. You start to feel overwhelmed. Not only are you dealing with the regular stresses of daily life, but now you’re thinking about the most serious problems the world is facing. Social media algorithms (算法) tend to elevate the most contentious (有争议的) content. They’re putting the terrible result in doomscrolling, which means repeatedly checking the internet for bad news.
According to psychology experts, doomscrolling has become a serious problem. Matthew Price, a professor of psychological science at the University of Vermont, says that ingesting a lot of negative news can cause anxiety and depression. “Some of the work that we have done has shown it definitely increases your stress at the moment. It could also increase your anxiety throughout the rest of your day,” Price says. “When you doomscroll, it gets much easier to reach your limit than I think you would if you weren’t doing that.”
This doesn’t just affect individuals. “When a lot of people are experiencing the stress of the news of the world at once, it can make them more likely to snap at each other”, Price says. “We may not realize it, but the reason why that guy was rude to you at Starbucks might be that he had read too many scary news articles.”
“When you have multiple people who are struggling, they’re going to have a harder time communicating together,” says Bethany Teachman, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia. “We have to think of these things from a systemic perspective or we’re not going to be very effective at making change.”
In terms of solutions, Teachman says people need to limit their exposure to social media. It’s OK to read some news to stay informed and check out what people are saying online, but it can get unhealthy if you overdo it. Once you’ve read enough to know what’s going on, think of other things that you enjoy doing that help you maintain your mental health.
28. What is the problem the author tries to tell us in the first paragraph?
A. People are exposed to much negative news on social media.
B. Adolescents spend too much time on social media.
C. Social media play a big role in young people’s lives.
D. There is too much fake news on the Internet.
29. What can we infer from Matthew Price’s words?
A. Long-term stress puts your health at risk.
B. Most young people face mental health problems.
C. Doomscrolling has a big impact on mental well-being.
D. It’s important to provide some positive content for people.
30. Which of the following statements shows Bethany Teachman’s opinion?
A. It’s challenging to prevent doomscrolling.
B. The effect of doomscrolling is limited to individuals.
C. People today cannot communicate well with each other.
D. Doomscrolling should be handled from a systemic perspective.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Logging off at the right time.
B. Caring for your mental health.
C. Serious problems the world is facing.
D. The negative effect of doomscrolling.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. A

The Peruvian anchovy (秘鲁鳀鱼) is a small fish with a big impact. Only about the size of a finger, they make up the single largest fish catch in the world — sometimes up to 15% of the global amount. Nearly all the highly nutritious fish are ground up to feed salmon and other farm-raised species that are worth billions of dollars. Now, scientists studying ancient fossils have shown warming waters once nearly eliminated (消灭) this valuable resource, raising fears that today’s climate change could repeat the disaster.
“The finding is really concerning,” says Becca Selden, a marine ecologist at Wellesley College who was not involved with the research. The new record of climate change’s impact on fish shows predators (捕食者) from seabirds to marine mammals would have a tough time without anchovies. Compared with anchovies, Panama lightfish (发光鱼) would cause worse problems for the fishing industry. Their smaller size makes them harder to catch, requiring nets with smaller holes that are difficult to clean. And because they don’t gather in dense groups, trawlers (拖网鱼船) would need to take longer voyages, burning more fuel, to catch large numbers.
Researchers have long been worried about the impact of climate change on wild fish populations. One reason is that some species require low temperature in order to reproduce. A broader issue is that when water gets warmer, it contains less oxygen. This is a bigger handicap for large fish. That’s because a smaller fish has more gill area to acquire oxygen, relative to its body size, than does a large fish. If species can’t migrate easily to cooler waters, researchers predict that their ecological communities will end up dominated by small species, which could be a awful problem for the local fishing industry.
“When a fish population is threatened by climate change, one approach to helping the species is to make fishing management more conservative and lower the allowable catch”, says Becca Selden. The anchovy population in Peru is already well managed, and many improvements in different fishes are on the way.
32. What is the function of paragraph 1?
A. To introduce a heated topic. B. To raise a frustrating phenomenon.
C. To inform people of the latest disaster. D. To encourage people to protect marine species.
33. What can we infer from the paragraph 2?
A. Becca Selden isn’t an expert in the field of marine ecology.
B. Pananma lightfish are more important fish resource than anchovies.
C. The climate change will cause more damage to predators than to fishing industry.
D. Predators and fishing industry will suffer from the negative effects caused by climate change.
34. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word “handicap” ?
A. element. B. request. C. obstacle. D. strength.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of fishing future?
A. Negative. B. Concerned. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. C 35. C

And because they don’t gather in dense groups, trawlers (拖网鱼船) would need to take longer voyages, burning more fuel, to catch large numbers.(它们较小的体型使它们更难被捕获,因此需要孔较小的网,难以清洗。由于它们不会密集聚集,拖网渔船需要更长的航程,燃烧更多的燃料,才能捕获大量的鱼。)”可知,捕食者和渔业将遭受气候变化带来的负面影响。故选D。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“Researchers have long been worried about the impact of climate change on wild fish populations. One reason is that some species require low temperature in order to reproduce. A broader issue is that when water gets warmer, it contains less oxygen.(长期以来,研究人员一直担心气候变化对野生鱼类种群的影响。原因之一是一些物种需要低温才能繁殖。一个更广泛的问题是,当水变暖时,它含有的氧气就会减少)”可知:海洋生物学家一直担忧鱼类的数量,接下来就分析了原因,原因之一就是水温高导致水里的氧气量变少,这为大鱼带来了阻碍,故“handicap”就和obstacle(障碍;阻碍)词义一致了。故选C。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The anchovy population in Peru is already well managed, and many improvements in different fishes are on the way.(秘鲁的鳀鱼种群已经得到了很好的管理,不同鱼类的许多改进正在进行中)”可知,作者对渔业未来的态度应该是乐观的。故选C。

The severe fire raced through Lahaina, Hawaii last August so fast that it killed 100 people and destroyed more than 2, 200 buildings, most of them homes. It left more than 7, 000 people without their possessions and in need of shelter.
That afternoon, Kalyn Lepre, a-36-year-old nutritional therapist, grabbed her wallet and her grand-mother’s pearls and drove out of town. She lost everything else in her four-bedroom house: clothes, documents, jewelry, GoPro gear, a computer and seven surf boards (冲浪板). Lepre surfed almost every day; surfing was a source of joy and a means to maintain her mental health. Seeing her surfboards reduced to a pile of fibers-- especially her prized baby blue Dong Haut custom (定制的) long-board--was devastating.
“I was so in love with that board, ” she says.
Jud Lau understood. The 53-year-old Maui native has been riding the waves since he was a teenager, and he’s been building surfboards for the last 15 years. Lau owned a studio 35 miles east of Lahaina where he shaped surf boards with his employees. In addition, he, along with his friends, ran a charity club in Lahaina to provide supplies in case of any emergency. He loves to help those victims in need. Every time a disaster occurred in Hawaii, they would call on people to donate to the victims. And he knows the value of a good surfboard. Kalyn Lepre had messaged him what she had lost, with her address attached, and desired to get a surfing board back so that she could start surfing in her beloved ocean.
“A surfboard is part of your whole being--especially in Hawaii, where surfing originates, ” he says. “Losing a board is like losing a part of your soul. ”
So, wanting to help the victims in some way, he started thinking about all the surfers who had lost lost their boards. “And I thought, That’s my area of expertise, ” he says. “Surfing is a healing things for surfers--getting in the ocean, connecting to Mother Nature. ” He realized he could give that back to Lepre.

【答案】参考范文:
Lau started by shaping surf boards. With strong determination to help Lau out, he carefully designed and crafted surf boards one at a time in his studio. On hearing the news about lau’s efforts, his friends in the charity club all set out to offer a favor. They collected some needed materials and use a computer-aided machine to customize a board for Lepre, which was designed to accommodate her size or the type of waves she rides. Eventually, a surf board was shaped without flaws. Hardly had Lau worked it out when he delivered it to Lepre.
A few days later, Lepre received a surprising package. Unwrapping the package, Lepre skipped high with joy. It was a hand-made surf board from Lau! The moment she saw it, she was extremely amazed, tears of appreciation and happiness glittering in her eyes. Lepre immediately texted to Lau--a hero in her eyes, thanking him for creating such an art piece for her, which allowed her to get back in the water and start healing. From then on, the new board served as an constant inspiration for Lepre to overcome whatever unpredictable difficulties are in store for her in the years to come.

C Social media play a big role in young people’s lives.

A. Negative. B. Concerned. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.
