Being a writer in the 21st century can keep you in front of a screen for so long that it feels like the room is sideways. Being a human with the Internet can mean hours spent on social media, scrolling and posting for so long that your sense of reality actually becomes sideways. Three years ago, I started to search for ways to deal with my anxiety. I had a brilliant idea, one that felt completely foreign to people like me: I’d go outside, to the real outside.
I grew up in the city, not hiking or camping, so I knew nothing about the outdoors. I have three kids with endless energy, so I figured I could solve two questions at once. I would get a breather from my job and the kids would play with insects and realize there is nothing better than nature.
We drove to Great Falls, Virginia, where hundreds of people on any given day spent hours meandering through the hillside and forest. The blue water pulsed, turning white and crashing powerfully hundreds of feet beneath us. The kids held their breath as if they had seen magics. But it’s just nature, just the outside, and that had been there all along. Since then, we’ve been fascinated.
Last summer I felt my home’s walls closing in, so I decided to go camping. I built my first fire. My kids watched my every move, asking every ten minutes to help get more branches and roast meat. About a month, my craving to take a break from the city grew again. We camped two more times before the cold came, each time seeing a bit more of what nature had to offer city folks.
4. Why did the author decide to go outside three years ago?
A. Because he was interested in nature. B. Because he hoped to reduce anxiety.
C. Because he fell in love with camping. D. Because he was eager for the outdoors.
5. What does the author want his kids to do?
A. Enjoy the beauty of nature. B. Stay away from social media.
C. Learn to protect themselves. D. Choose to do what they are fond of.
6. How did the kids feel about the tour to Great Falls?
A. Tired. B. Scared. C. Bored. D. Excited.
7. What does the underlined word “craving” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Memory. B. Chance. C. Desire. D. Ability.

Math anxiety has become a common psychological condition among students around the world. Students in countries with higher levels of math anxiety tend to achieve lower math grades, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Feb 15.
Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when confronted with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear.
Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid numbers-related situations, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to the subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.
Relief comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren’t destined to be bad at math. “If a child has math anxiety, don’t assume that they’ re not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math.” Daniel Ansuri, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. “Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged.”
Also, there are ways to manage your math-related stress. If you’re stressed before a math exam, spend a few minutes exploring those feelings before the exam begins. “It’s about making sure you’re interpreting your feelings correctly,” Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist told the BBC. “A fast heartbeat and sweaty palms don’t necessarily mean you will fail.”
A little math anxiety could be taken as a positive challenge to overcome. Just like many people get stage fright before delivering a speech, this nervous energy can help to motivate, according to Ian Lyons, a psychologist at Georgetown University.
Math doesn’t come easy, no matter how clever you are. Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian artist, was a huge fan of mathematics. But his notebooks show that Da Vinci couldn’t do fractions (分数). He felt stressed to grasp, for instance, that dividing a number by one-quarter is the same as multiplying by four, resulting in a higher number than the original.
8. What do we know about math anxiety?
A. It is common merely among students.
B. It leads to people struggling in their career.
C. It can cause physical and emotional discomfort.
D. People with math anxiety are often bad at maths.
9. Which of the following statements will Daniel Ansari agree with according to his study?
A. Math anxiety may contribute to better grades.
B. Bad experience with math can cause cognitive disadvantages.
C. Math anxiety is not related to the ability to solve math problems.
D. Students with math anxiety may indeed experience lower math scores.
10. How should you deal with the stress related to math according to the article?
A. Learn to make sense of your feelings.
B. Avoid thinking about failures in math.
C. Take all nervous energy as a challenge.
D. Pay little attention to your math anxiety.
11. Why is Leonardo da Vinci’s story mentioned?
A. To suggest a way to solve math anxiety.
B. To show that math anxiety is very common.
C. To explain why math is a difficult subject to learn.
D. To show it’s not enjoyable for da Vinci to learn math.
D
Inspired by the medical bay of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek, a research team from the University of Waterloo uses radar (雷达) technology to monitor people’s health while at the wheel, turning an ordinary car or truck into a mobile medical center.
Dr. George Shaker, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, is working with a team of graduate students to combine radar with evolving vehicle technology to make health checks easier. The idea is to use the time people spend in their cars to gather data on their health for accurate analysis and preventative treatment — without the need for any type of wearable.
The radar, smaller than a USB thumb drive, is placed into the vehicle cabin and sends out signals that detect human activities, which are then sent back to the radar. The built-in AI system collects and analyzes the data to build a medical picture and identify any potential conditions. At the end of the driver’s journey, the system sends the report directly to their cell phone for review.
For Shaker and his team, the challenge was evolving the technology to identify changes in breathing patterns or heart rhythms that indicate potential health issues related to cardiovascular (心血管的) conditions as well as respiratory (呼吸的) system conditions.
“We focused on enhancing data collection for exact information related to people’s respiratory and cardiovascular systems and teaching the AI how to make medical interpretations from this data. Another important consideration was personal privacy and security — no data is stored on the cloud; it is sent to the monitored person’s cellphone only,” said Ali Ghara, the lead Ph. D. student on the project.
The research team is building on this work to expand the radar technology’s abilities to monitor the overall health and well-being of the person who is in a vehicle, run diagnostics and generate quality medical reports that mark any issues that need attention, as well as assist with emergency communication in the event of an accident.
12. What can we learn about the radar technology?
A. It provides more precise health data than wearables.
B It creates medical pictures to reveal healthy secrets.
C. It sends the health report to the driver’s phone for review.
D. It combines with vehicle technology to assess the driver’s health.
13. What can be inferred from Ali Ghara’s words in paragraph 5?
A. The AI needs training to collect health data.
B. AI’s interpretation of medical data is accurate.
C. The team is improving data collection and analysis.
D Cellphones monitor personal privacy and security.
14. What does the follow-up study aim to do?
A. Ensure the privacy of medical reports.
B. Warn the drivers of potential accidents.
C. Enhance health monitoring for all passengers.
D. Apply the radar technology across all vehicles.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Radars May Know Your Conditions Before You Do
B. Healthy Driving: Radar Monitors Health in Vehicles
C. Drivers Mind: Radar Spies on Your Heartbeats
D. Radars Can Improve Your Health During Driving.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Multitasking is really bad for how much work you can get done. When we do multiple tasks at once, we keep “switching tasks”. ___16___ Switching between tasks a lot makes you less productive. Even though each switch cost might be small, when we keep changing between tasks over and over, those small costs add up to a lot. Multitasking might seem efficient at first, but in the end, it can take more time and lead to more mistakes. So, how do we start mono-tasking that is doing one task at a time?
Try to work deeply, focusing on one thing. Instead of working in short 15 — 20-minute bursts, set aside 2 to 4 hours each day to work on a single project without any interruptions. Extending focused working time can improve work efficiency as well as work quality. ___17___
Get rid of distractions in your work environment. Mono-tasking is as much about getting rid of distractions as it is about focusing. ___18___ Mark fixed time on your calendar for specific work.
___19___ Schedule your day around peak performance times. Whether it’s early in the morning , right after lunch, or late at night, everyone has times of the day when they’re more productive. Once you identify your peak performance time, guard it!
Focus on what’s important. Try to remember: At the end of our lives, no one will remember how quickly we responded to emails; no one on their deathbed asks for more time to sit through another budget meeting. ___20___ This is the key part of doing one task at a time.
A. Avoiding distraction is of vital importance.
B. Plan deep work for times when you work best.
C. This causes a “switch cost” — the time needed to get used to a new task.
D. Instead, we look for more time to concentrate on the meaningful thing.
E. Frequent task switching can boost productivity a lot.
F. Shut down your phones’ apps or anything else that sends notification.
G. It can also reduce your work stress to some extent.

I had always thought of my neighborhood as a peaceful and friendly place. However, all that changed when Mr. Thompson moved in next door. He was a middle-aged man who seemed to have a rather strange lifestyle.
At first, I didn’t pay much attention to him. But one day, I noticed that his car was always parked in a way that blocked part of my driveway. It was really inconvenient, especially when I was in a hurry to go to work or pick up my kids from school. I politely asked him to be more careful with his parking, but he just gave me a cold look and said he would do so as he was pleased. This made me get cross with him.
As time went by, more problems arose. Mr. Thompson had a big dog that barked loudly day and night. I could barely have a sound sleep, and my kids were also disturbed by the noise. I tried to talk to him about the dog, but he refused to listen. He even accused me of being too sensitive.
One evening, I came home from a long-day work, extremely worn out. Just as I was about to park my car, I found that Mr. Thompson’s car was once again blocking my driveway. I was so frustrated that I knocked on his door forcefully. After seemed a long time, the door opened. There stood Mr. Thompson with an indifferent look on his face. Words were exchanged, and both of us were angry. We had a heated argument. He even slammed the door shut right in front of me. After that, we didn’t talk to each other for weeks. My once proud and friendly neighborhood ties are gone.
One day, as I was mowing the lawn(修剪草坪)in my garden, I saw Mr. Thompson struggling to carry a heavy box along his driveway.

Dear Peter,
How are you doing? Just as planned, my family went on a tour during the New Year holiday break. Here I’d like to share with you what we experienced.
When traveling, we were amazed at the changes and convenience brought by AI. First of all, wherever and whenever we went, we could use the mobile payment, including buying admission tickets. More interestingly, we no longer had to get into tourist attractions with the ID card. We could do it through a face recognition app now, which really saved time so that we didn’t have to wait in a queue. What an amazing experience!
I do hope you can come to China and experience all of this when you have spare time. Looking forward to your arrival.
Yours,
Li Hua

A part of me felt that he deserved to struggle after how rudely he had treated me. But as I watched him wobble under the weight of the box, his face tense with effort, another part of me felt guilty for just standing there. I had always believed in kindness, yet here I was, debating whether to help a neighbor in need. Taking a deep breath, I set aside my pride and walked over. “Let me help you.” I said, reaching for the box. Recovering from surgery had left him frustrated and short-tempered, and he realized now how inconsiderate he had been. Hearing this, my frustration melted away. I admitted that I had judged him too quickly. As we talked, the tension between us faded, replaced by a quiet understanding. From that day on, our relationship changed—we weren’t just neighbors anymore but two people willing to give each other a second chance.
