Today’s teenage generation has been brought up surrounded by one single stereotype (刻板印象): the so-called MTV generation. We’re all constantly glued to our phone and TV screens, the boys are addicted to video games and the girls prefer posting pictures of themselves on the Internet. Both could watch TV series all day and both could do without a book. How accurate is this stereotype?
It turns out that most of them could actually do without a book. “The Kids & Family Reading Report” found that only 24% of 12 to 14-year-olds read five to seven days a week. The percentage goes down to a mere 17% when it comes to 15 to 17-year-olds. And it may come as no surprise that 76% of the former visit social media websites on a daily basis.
Reading frequently has many great benefits: it develops your verbal abilities (especially for kids, it will greatly improve their vocabulary), it improves your focus and concentration, it enhances your imagination, it reduces stress and it’s entertaining! Not only that but research has shown that people who read for pleasure show a greater appetite to engage with stories, texts and learning.
The popular TV show “Game of Thrones” (《权利的游戏》) certainly seems to have motivated a lot of teens to buy George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series. Sales skyrocketed after the show was first put on in 2011, selling 9 million copies in one year, with many teens and young adults believed to have contributed to this statistic. In contrast, the book series had “only” sold 5 million from the first book’s release till 2011.
With nowadays’ teenagers apparently constantly glued to their screens, TV series “Game of Thrones” seems to have inspired a lot of them to take a break and read a book. Maybe teenagers will end up being the ones solving the issue after all.
28. Why does the author mention “The Kids & Family Reading Report” in paragraph 2?
A. To prove a fact about teenagers’ reading.
B. To stress the importance of daily reading.
C. To introduce some social media websites.
D. To encourage teenagers to read more each week.
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A The importance of verbal abilities. B. The ways to read for pleasure.
C. The advantages of frequent reading. D. The appetite to engage with learning.
30. What does the underlined word “skyrocketed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Dropped slightly. B. Increased quickly.
C. Changed frequently. D. Remained surprisingly.
31. How does the author think of the TV series “Game of Thrones”?
A. Positive. B. Defensive.
C. Cautious. D. Doubtful.
A 29. C 30. B 31. A
第二段首句“It turns out that most of them could actually do without a book.(事实证明,他们中的大多数人实际上确实没有书)”提到,很多青少年确实不读书,接着下文报告中“‘The Kids & Family Reading Report’ found that only 24% of 12 to 14-year-olds read five to seven days a week. The percentage goes down to a mere 17% when it comes to 15 to 17-year-olds. And it may come as no surprise that 76% of the former visit social media websites on a daily basis.(《儿童与家庭阅读报告》发现,12岁至14岁的孩子中,只有24%的人每周阅读5到7天。在15到17岁的青少年中,这一比例下降到17%。76%的前一种人每天都会访问社交媒体网站,这一点也不奇怪)”用数字说明了青少年每周阅读时间减少,印证了青少年少读书的事实。因此该报告的目的是证明青少年阅读中的一个事实。故选A。
根据文章第四段划线词前“The popular TV show ‘Game of Thrones’ (《权利的游戏》) certainly seems to have motivated a lot of teens to buy George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book series.(受欢迎的电视剧《权力的游戏》似乎确实激励了许多青少年购买George R.R. Martin的畅销书系列)”和划线词后“selling 9 million copies in one year, with many teens and young adults believed to have contributed to this statistic. In contrast, the book series had ‘only’ sold 5 million from the first book’s release till 2011.(一年内销量达到900万张,许多青少年和年轻人被认为对这一数据做出了贡献。相比之下,从第一本书发行到2011年,该系列‘只’卖出了500万本)”可知,电视剧《权力的游戏》似乎激发了很多青少年购买George的《权力的游戏》小说系列,一年卖了 900 万本而之前总共才卖 500 万本。因此此处指销售额剧增。skyrocketed意为“猛涨”,故选B。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“TV series ‘Game of Thrones’ seems to have inspired a lot of them to take a break and read a book(电视剧《权力的游戏》似乎激励了很多人休息一下,读一本书)”可知,电视剧似乎启发了人们阅读。 故选A。

This fall, students at the University of Massachusetts found a new menu at their dining commons: the “diet for a cooler planet” menu. This meant meat from animals raised with a carbon-friendly approach. It mainly included vegetables that had been picked from a local farm’s field post-harvest. The options were plant-heavy with little or no packaging.
“We wanted to let students participate in climate action by making choices about their food,” says Kathy Wicks, director for University of Massachusetts Dining. The university is not alone in this effort. Increasingly, American consumers and institutions are thinking about how their food choices factor into climate change. For many, small choices at the grocery store, dining hall, and restaurant can feel more accessible than big-ticket options like buying an energy-saving car.
Small changes in dietary habits may make a big difference. Climate activists often target fossil fuels (化石燃料) and transportation systems, but studies point to the food system as a significant contributor to global warming. According to Project Drawdown, a research organization that weighs climate solutions, the way food is grown, transported, and consumed accounts for about a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas production. Beef is a regular target. “If, on average, Americans cut a quarter pound of beef per week from their diet, it’s like taking 10 million cars off the road a year,” says Sujatha Bergen, director of health campaigns for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Food waste ranks third among climate solutions. While much waste occurs before consumers are engaged — food left on the field because it does not fit appearance standards. Americans also throw out a lot of food they have purchased: about $1,600 worth a year per family of four.
“People are beginning to understand that their food choices make a big impact on climate,” says Megan Larmer, director of regional food at the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming in New York. But she stresses sustainable change will need to come from the whole food system.
32. What can be known about the new menu at the University of Massachusetts?
A. It was meat-free. B. It used plants from cold areas.
C. It was based on locally grown vegetables. D. It involved vegetables specially packaged.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Factors impacting climate change. B. Students’ choice about healthy food.
C. Multiple efforts on energy-saving food. D. Influence of climate change on schools.
34. Why does some food remain on the field?
A. It is too expensive. B. It doesn’t look nice.
C. It is harmful to health. D. It doesn’t taste good enough.
35. What can be inferred according to Megan Larmer?
A. It is stressful to change the food system for better.
B. People have attached great importance to the food production.
C. People’s food choices have improved the global climate greatly.
D. It takes the work from the entire food system to achieve continuing change.
C 33. C 34. B 35. D

由下文“A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meeting s with your professor to discuss course concepts. (社会关系通常是学习的重要组成部分。你可以做一些事情来缓解这个问题。本科生杰西卡·平克建议和朋友一起参加在线课程,这样你们就可以互相激励,坚持下去。你也可以在课堂讨论板上找到学生,组织一个学习小组,或者安排与教授面对面的会议,讨论课程概念)”可知,本空要说跟“人们之间的互动”有关的话题,故E选项“The chief complain t about online courses is that they lack human interaction. (对在线课程的主要抱怨是它们缺乏人与人之间的互动。)”能引起下文,符合题意。故选E。

第二节 (满分 25 分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
This year, I felt very nervous about my English class because I am an international student and this is my first time studying in the UK. I knew I wouldn’t know anyone in the class, which made me a bit anxious. But since I didn’t know anyone, I had the chance to do something I almost enjoy as much as socializing — people-watching.
There was another international student in the class, and she was one of the most interesting girls. She sat right behind me. She was always laughing, chatting non-stop, and seemed so happy all the time. She was also very friendly and one of the few people in the class who tried to greet me. She was the kind of person you would like, even if you didn’t really know her.
At the end of the academic year, we were assigned a big project. The requirements for this project were quite open; basically, we had to read an article, then read or watch related materials, and finally give a class presentation based on what we had learned. The presentations were scheduled for the last month of the semester. Since everyone chose different topics and presented them in different ways, we saw some of the most interesting and diverse presentations I’d ever seen.
The girl sitting behind me gave her presentation in the last few days. She walked up to the podium (讲台) and told everyone that she had once read an article about not fitting in while living in a foreign country, because she herself had gone through, that kind of struggle. Since it was too difficult to talk about it directly with us, she showed us parts of her diary, sharing her feelings of being homesick and struggling to adjust to a new environment, and how she overcame these difficulties.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Almost everyone was moved at the end of her presentation.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
She was relieved and her mood had lightened when she returned to her seat.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Almost everyone was moved at the end of her presentation. Her courage to share such personal experiences touched us deeply. It made me realize that the challenges I had been facing as an international student were not unique to me. Many of us, even though we came from different countries and cultures, had gone through similar struggles of homesickness, loneliness, and the feeling of not fitting in. I could see that her words helped others in the class feel more connected and understood. We all began to look at each other not as strangers but as individuals who shared common experiences.
She was relieved and her mood had lightened when she returned to her seat. I could tell that her presentation had helped her let go of some of the weight she had been carrying. She smiled at me as I turned around, and for the first time since I’d met her, I could see a calm, peaceful expression on her face. It was as if she had finally found a way to make peace with her experience and was no longer burdened by it. I decided to have a talk with her. I felt good to share my own feelings with her, and at that moment, I realized how much easier it was to connect with others when we opened up about our struggles.

While English is getting more important in our schools, Chinese has become popular among foreign kids. But Chinese can be more difficult to learn. At least 16-year-old Piao Chenglong thinks so. “English is easier for me. Chinese characters have too many strokes (笔画),” said Piao. “But I want to learn it. I want to study at Beijing University when I grow up.” Piao is from Korea. He came to China in 2008.
In Korea, there are more than 300,000 Chinese learners like Piao. Some Korean students begin to learn to write the language on their first day at school. To help students learn Chinese, Korea holds speaking competitions for high school students every year.
Chinese isn’t just popular in Korea. People from all the world want to learn it. The Ministry of Education of China says that nearly 130 million people from 85 countries are learning Chinese. This number will be increasing to 800 million in the coming years.
In America, Chinese is the second most popular foreign language after Spanish. Some American middle schools have Chinese classes. Students learn to make jiaozi and tie Chinese knots. Some even try to write and draw in the Chinese way!
People want to learn Chinese because China is becoming such an important country. Foreign countries want to understand China better to help them with business. The Chinese government is also helping the world learn Chinese. It has sent more than 200 Chinese teachers to more than 60 countries in the world. Many more Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) will be set up in the world. These institutes will teach Chinese to foreign students.

A. The importance of verbal abilities. B. The ways to read for pleasure.
C. The advantages of frequent reading. D. The appetite to engage with learning.
30. What does the underlined word “skyrocketed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Dropped slightly. B. Increased quickly.
C. Changed frequently. D. Remained surprisingly.
31. How does the author think of the TV series “Game of Thrones”?
A Positive. B. Defensive.
C. Cautious. D. Doubtful.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Almost everyone was moved at the end of her presentation.
