Lynn Jenner quickly packed up and drove to higher ground as Hurricane Hone approached in 2024. However, he wasn’t relocating his family; he was shifting snails.
Jenner works with some of the rarest endangered species on the planet — Hawaii’s native tree snails. Once abundant like Christmas ornaments on trees, these colorful, jewel-like snails are now mostly extinct with more than half of the 750 species vanishing within the span of a human lifetime. Jenner and his team with Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources face the monumental task of saving what’s left.
To beat extinction, 40 species of snails, each about the size of a dime, are being cared for by humans in an unremarkable trailer near Honolulu. “Most people think of pandas and tigers when they think of endangered species going extinct, but imagine having 40 different species that are all as rare as pandas.” Jenner says.
This winter, one species of snail will reach a significant milestone. It will be released in a special enclosure in the mountains of Oahu, which has been painstakingly prepared to give the snails the best chance of survival in their natural habitat.
However, the outlook for Hawaii’s snails remain uncertain. Around the globe, plants and animals are being brought into enclosure as a last-ditch effort against extinction. But with climate change and the spread of invasive species, many have no clear path back to the wild in the near term. This could mean they will remain under human care. In light of the biodiversity crisis, many wildlife biologists believe there’s no other option. “These are irreplaceable biological treasures,” Jenner says. “It is now or never. What we manage to preserve on Earth will be what the next generation can reintroduce.”
4. What does the text say about Hawaii’s tree snails?
A. They live as long as humans. B. 375 species have disappeared.
C. Their population has increased. D. They are close to extinction.
5. How does Lynn Jenner help endangered snails?
A. By restoring their habitats. B. By studying their behavior.
C. By reducing invasive species. D. By moving and caring for them.
6. What is the purpose of Paragraph 4?
A. To compare snails to pandas. B. To explain snails’ survival in nature.
C. To stress a key snail release event. D. To describe why snails are in a trailer.
7. What can be concluded from the last paragraph?
A. Popular species should be prioritized. B. Human care is vital for endangered species.
C. Biodiversity conservation faces uncertainty. D. Climate change alone causes snail extinction.
D 5. D 6. C 7. B

根据第一段“Lynn Jenner quickly packed up and drove to higher ground as Hurricane Hone approached in 2024. However, he wasn’t relocating his family; he was shifting snails. (2024年飓风“Hone”逼近时,林恩·詹纳(Lynn Jenner)迅速收拾行装,开车前往地势较高的地方。然而,他并不是要搬家;他在移动蜗牛。)”和第三段“To beat extinction, 40 species of snails, each about the size of a dime, are being cared for by humans in an unremarkable trailer near Honolulu. (为了避免灭绝,人类在檀香山附近一辆不起眼的拖车里照顾着40种蜗牛,每一种蜗牛都只有一角硬币大小。)”可知,Jenner通过转移并照顾蜗牛来保护它们,故选D。
【6题详解】

C
A watched pot never boils, but time has wings when you’re having fun. The familiar saying has a basis in solid science — our sense of time does expand and contract depending on the way we experience the world. Even delicate visual features can affect how we perceive time. New research shows more memorable images seem to last longer.
Martin Wiener, head of the research, says the finding helps reveal how the brain’s time-bending strategy allows it to process and remember more information. While what is actually happening in the brain when time seems to expand remains unclear, scientists suspect it may have something to do with helping the brain process more information in limited time.
This is especially relevant to the brain’s visual system which, subjected to information overload, has to rank in order of importance, allowing for limited resources. Recent research has shown some images are more naturally memorable than others.
To understand how this memorability of an image, along with a few simpler visual features such as scene size and disorder, might relate to our subjective sense of time, Wiener and his colleagues conducted related experiments, in which subjects were shown images with varying durations and were asked to categorize whether the length of time on the screen was either “short” or “long”. The next day they were given a surprise memory test to see which images they recalled seeing.
The researchers found larger scene sizes seemed to extend time while more disorderly scenes seemed to reduce the perceived duration. Besides, the subjects perceived that more memorable images remained on the screen longer, even if they were all presented for the same amount of time. To find the underlying factor, the team fed the same memorability-ranked images to a neural (神经的) network modeled after the brain’s visual system and found more memorable images were processed faster.
The explanation for why our brain’s faster processing would slow time is that it’s increasing the amount of information it can take in at once. Limited resources to process information may act as a sort of bottleneck, which the brain can widen when it needs to absorb more information, thus dilating time.
8. What does the familiar saying “A watched pot never boils” illustrate?
A. Actively waiting makes time feel slower. B. Visual features are the key to judging time.
C. Our activities do not change time perception. D. Time perception relies mainly on emotional state.
9. How does the brain’s visual system handle information?
A. By screening out complex images. B. By comparing similar scenes.
C. By sorting randomly. D. By setting priorities.
10. According to the text, which of the images would seem to last longer?
A. B. C. D.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. How memorable images affect our perception of time.
B. How the brain processes visual information.
C. How the brain ranks information by importance.
D. How different visual features influence memory.
A 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第一段“A watched pot never boils, but time has wings when you're having fun. The familiar saying has a basis in solid science — our sense of time does expand and contract depending on the way we experience the world.(心急水不开,但玩乐时时光飞逝。这句熟悉的谚语有坚实的科学依据——我们对时间的感知确实会根据我们体验世界的方式而延长或缩短。)”可推知,这句谚语意在用“盯着水壶”的体验来说明“主动等待”会让人感觉时间变慢。故选A。
根据第三段“This is especially relevant to the brain's visual system which, subjected to information overload, has to rank in order of importance, allowing for limited resources.(这与大脑的视觉系统尤其相关,该系统面临着信息过载,必须根据重要性进行排序,以适应有限的资源。)”
根据第五段“The researchers found larger scene sizes seemed to extend time while more disorderly scenes seemed to reduce the perceived duration. Besides, the subjects perceived that more memorable images remained on the screen longer, even if they were all presented for the same amount of time.(研究人员发现,更大的场景尺寸似乎能延长时间,而更混乱的场景则会缩短感知的持续时间。此外,受试者感知到更易记忆的图像在屏幕上停留的时间更长,即使它们都呈现了相同的时间。)”综合可推知,看起来持续时间更长的图像应具有“更大场景尺寸”和“更易记忆”的特征。观察四个选项,B选项(开阔、有层次的自然风光)同时符合场景开阔(大尺寸)和内容令人印象深刻(易记忆)的特征。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“A watched pot never boils, but time has wings when you’re having fun. New research shows more memorable images seem to last longer.(心急水不开,但玩乐时时光飞逝。这句熟悉的谚语有着坚实的科学依据——我们对时间的感知确实会因我们体验世界的方式而延长或缩短。即便是细微的视觉特征也能影响我们对时间的感知。新的研究表明,更易记忆的图像似乎持续得更久。)”可知,文章开篇引出时间感知可变,随后指出视觉特征(尤其是图像记忆性)对此的影响,并详细介绍相关实验及神经机制,全文核心围绕“更易记忆的图像如何影响我们对时间的感知”展开。故选A。
D
Many people count on faster, cheaper and better technology to offer a vision of a brighter future. Nevertheless, as the 2020s dawn, optimism is in short supply. The new technologies that dominated the past decade seem to be making matters worse. Social media, intended to connect people, are infamous for privacy leaks. Convenient E-commerce and on-demand ride services are charged with underpaying workers and blocking the streets with vehicles.
Today’s pessimistic mood targets smart phones and social media, which took off a decade ago. Yet concerns that particular technologies might be doing more harm than good have arisen before. The 1920s witnessed a criticism of cars, once regarded as solutions to horse-drawn vehicles issues like noise, waste, and accidents. And industrialization was criticized in the 19th century by Romanticism who worried about the replacement of skilled workers, the robbing of the countryside and the suffering of factory hands.
However, that pessimism can be overdone. Too often people focus on the drawbacks of a new technology while taking its benefits for granted. Worries about screen time should be weighed against the much more substantial benefits of instant communication and information access that smartphones make possible. A further danger is that Luddites’ (卢德分子) efforts to avoid the short-term costs associated with a new technology will end up denying access to its long-term benefits — something Carl Benedict Frey, an Oxford academic, calls a “technology trap”. Fears that robots will steal people’s jobs may discourage their use. Yet in the long run countries that wish to maintain their living standard as their workforce ages and decreases will need more robots, not fewer.
Any powerful technology can be used for good or ill. It is the choices people make about it that shape the world. Perhaps the real source of anxiety is not technology itself, but growing doubts about the ability of societies to hold this debate, and come up with good answers. So as the decade turns, put aside the pessimism for a moment. To be alive in the tech-fascinated 2020s is to be among the luckiest people who have ever lived.
12. Which may be a problem caused by social media in paragraph 1?
A. Identity theft. B. Network viruses.
C. Network addiction. D. A troll or cyberbully.
13. Why is the criticism of cars in the 1920s mentioned?
A. Past technologies are more harmful than modern ones.
B. Every technological advancement faces initial rejection.
C. Current technological pessimism has existed for so long.
D. Environmental concerns always drive technological debates.
14. What might be a result of a “technology trap”?
A. A block to technological advancement. B. A way to get information and entertainment.
C. A lack of good employment in the job market. D. A decrease in the number of underpaid workers.
15. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Technology Optimism vs. Pessimism: Neither Can Win.
B. Beyond Technological Pessimism: Society’s choices matter.
C. The Technology Trap: An Unavoidable Dilemma.
D. The Double-Edged Sword of Innovation: Never Use It.
A 13. C 14. A 15. B
根据第一段“Social media, intended to connect people, are infamous for privacy leaks.(旨在连接人们的社交媒体,却因隐私泄露而声名狼藉。)” 故选A。
根据第二段“Today’s pessimistic mood targets smart phones and social media, which took off a decade ago. Yet concerns that particular technologies might be doing more harm than good have arisen before.(当今的悲观情绪针对的是十年前开始兴起的智能手机和社交媒体。然而,对特定技术可能弊大于利的担忧以前也曾出现过。)”以及该段后续对汽车和工业化的批评举例可推知,作者提到1920年代对汽车的批评,是为了论证“对技术的悲观主义情绪由来已久”这一观点,即当下的悲观并非新现象。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“A further danger is that Luddites’ efforts to avoid the short-term costs associated with a new technology will end up denying access to its long-term benefits — something Carl Benedict Frey, an Oxford academic, calls a “technology trap”.(一个更深层的危险是,卢德分子为避免与新技术相关的短期成本所做的努力,最终会使其无法获得长期的益处——牛津大学学者卡尔·本尼迪克特·弗雷称之为‘技术陷阱’。)” 故选A。
通读全文,尤其是根据文章最后一段“It is the choices people make about it that shape the world. Perhaps the real source of anxiety is not technology itself, but growing doubts about the ability of societies to hold this debate, and come up with good answers.(正是人们针对技术所做的选择,塑造了这个世界。

Mrs. Peabody was a serious old woman the kids called psychic (通灵者) because she magically knew which students had accomplished the real assignment and which had not.
She once gave the class a writing assignment. “Write an essay about summer vacation. ”she said. “Be as creative as you can. ”
Well, that night Jim sat at his desk at home and stared unhappily at a blank sheet of paper. He didn’t want to write a stupid essay about his summer vacation. Boring. So he gave up on the assignment but wrote what he wanted to—not an essay at all but a science fiction. It was about a distant planet that didn’t have summer—it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have vacations either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 hours a day.
The next morning he handed in the story but that night he lay awake until three a. m. , thinking: Why did I do that? I totally ignored the assignment. Maybe it’d take Mrs. Peabody a few days to grade the essays. I’d beg her for a chance to write another one, the sort she wanted.
But when he got to class the next morning it turned out that Mrs. Peabody had read and graded the essays. And when he saw the way she glanced at him with a strange look in her sten, psychic eyes, he wished he’d stayed home sick. I’m in trouble, Jim thought, blushing already, betrayed by his freckles (雀斑). Staring at the floor. Mrs. Peabody continued, “Almost everyone in class wrote an essay about his or her summer vacation . Almost everyone. ”This is bad, Jim thought. I’m getting an F, I know it. “But, ” the teacher said, “One student decided he didn’t feel like doing that. ” Jim glanced up long enough to see her eyes focused on him. This is worse than an F. . . I’m in note-to-the-parents territory now.
Then Jim heard his name called.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Jim finished reading his story, a smile spread across Mrs. Peabody’s face.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then Jim heard his name called. Jim’s heart missed a beat. “Come here to the front and read your story,” said Mrs. Peabody. Desperately, Jim tried to read her intentions from her face, but got nothing. Feeling all the eyes on him, he walked to the front of the classroom with trembling steps. Then he gave Mrs. Peabody another glimpse and found her staring at him with no expression. Jim felt a drop of sweat dripping down his back, itching. Clearing up his throat, Jim began to read his story.
When Jim finished reading his story, a smile spread across Mrs. Peabody’s face. “Boys and girls,” Mrs. Peabody said clearly to the rest of the class, “Jim is the only one who got an A on the assignment because he was as creative as I had asked you to be.” After a few seconds’ pause, applause broke out. Face blushing, Jim couldn’t believe what he had just heard. All previous worries disappeared. It turned out that the teacher’s real intention was to make students value creativity. It was his reverence for the teacher as well as a serious attitude towards tasks that got Jim an A.

A By screening out complex images.
