It’s 6:30 a.m. , and inside a hotel’s kitchen, Najibullah Bastani throws some dry wood onto a small fire. “What will this day bring?” Bastani sighed (叹气) as he watched snow covering the road outside and waited for the day’s first cars to cross the Sabzak Pass — the only land bridge open year-round that connects cities across northern Afghanistan to the west.
As the temperatures dropped sharply, thousands of parents with sick children flooded the pass to reach the region’s only well-equipped hospital. Young men took to the road to begin their migrant journey into Iran in search of work. But the journey across the pass — which is covered in snow six months of the year — is often not just tiring. Cars slide from the road in flash storms. Snow chains cut holes in tires (轮胎). Wind blows over trucks, blocking the pass for days.
For many travelers, Bastani’s hotel, sitting at the center of the pass, has become a lighthouse of sorts. Every driver who frequently the pass knows to call him when they find a vehicle that has run out of fuel or slipped off the road. He delivers food to the passengers, calls the closest mechanic and sends a local taxi driver to bring them to the comfort of the hotel.
As four men walked into the hotel, Bastani offered them a fresh pot of tea and some bread. When the driver asked about the conditions of the road, Bastani related the story of a serious accident only days earlier, after a bus without chains on its tires had slid off the road into a small ditch (沟). All of its passengers got off except for an older woman who stayed on board, not wanting to wait in knee-deep snow. But before Bastani and his men could move the bus back onto the road, it suddenly slid farther down and fell off a cliff (悬崖).
Before the driver departed into the white landscape, he shook Bastani’s hand. He hoped not to see him again, but was comforted knowing that if he needed him, he would be there.
4. Why did Bastani sigh?
A. He was tired of running the hotel alone.
B. He had very few guests during wintertime.
C. He worried about possible accidents at the pass.
D. He was unprepared for the declining temperatures.
5. What do we know about the Sabzak Pass?
A. It is less used than before. B. It has become a tourist attraction.
C. It is blanketed in snow all year round. D. It plays a crucial role in connecting regions.
6. Which of the following can best describe Bastani?
A. Selfless. B. Humorous. C. Efficient. D. Ambitious.
7. Why did Bastani tell the bus story?
A. To entertain his guests.
B. To explain the importance of the pass.
C. To imply the necessity of repairing the land bridge.
D. To warn people to be very careful when crossing the pass.
C
Staying positive through the cold season could be the best defence against getting sick, a new study suggests.
In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fall ill.
The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help ward off the common cold and other illnesses.
“People with a positive emotional style may have different immune (免疫) responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Cohen and his colleagues had found in a previous study that happier people seemed less likely to catch a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional quality itself had the effect.
For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults complete standard measures of personality qualities, physical health and “emotional style”.
Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy-going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense and hostile (故意的) had a negative style.
Afterwards, the researchers gave them nose drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus that causes flu-like symptoms. Over the next six days, the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had. Cohen and his colleagues found that happy people were less likely to develop a cold. What’s more, when happy folks did develop a cold, their symptoms were less severe than what would be expected based on objective measures. In contrast, people with negative characters were not at increased risk of developing a cold based on objective measures, though they did tend to get down about their symptoms.
“We find that it’s really positive emotions that have the big effect,” Cohen said, “not the negative ones.”
So can a bad-tempered person fight a cold by deciding to be happy?
8. What does the underlined phrase “ward off” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Get close to. B. Keep away from. C. Get used to. D. Go on with.
9 What was the purpose of Cohen’s new study?
A. To find effective ways to fight illnesses.
B. To test people’s immune responses to flu virus.
C. To examine the relation between emotional style and health.
D. To tell the differences between happy and unhappy people.
10. How did Cohen reach his conclusion?
A. By comparing the volunteers’ symptoms. B. By asking the volunteers to complete a form.
C. By collecting data among people with a cold. D. By asking the research questions.
11. What can we conclude from the text?
A. The more positive we are, the longer we live. B. Positive emotions enhances medical effectiveness.
C. Physical health is as important as mental health. D. The happier we are, the fewer colds we will suffer.
D
Global warming is mainly caused by the increased emission of greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide produced by power stations that use huge amounts of fossil fuel to supply us with electricity. These greenhouse gases have an average lifetime in the atmosphere of 50 to 200 years. This means that even if we stopped the emission of greenhouse gases completely tomorrow, global warming would still continue for decades to come.
The International Energy Agency(IEA) records the energy consumption worldwide and produces a forecast for the next 25 years. In their last energy outlook published in 2006, IEA predicted a strong increase of the carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 as a consequence of the increasing demand for energy worldwide. Additionally, IEA investigated to which extent the above mentioned emissions of CO₂ could be prevented if politics applied strict measures. One of many measures investigated was massive facilitation and stimulation for building additional nuclear power plants (核电站).
Nuclear energy is used to generate electrical power without any sort of fossil fuel involved in the process. Therefore, CO₂ emission can indeed be reduced, if electricity power plants driven by fossil fuels were replaced by nuclear power plants. Yet, the application of nuclear power is highly risky and problematic; and so the problem of CO2 emissions must not be looked at independently of all other risks and problems.
Some critics claim that nuclear energy’s emissions can compare to those of fossil-fuels’ when the life cycle impacts of nuclear power are considered. Although nuclear power plants do not release greenhouse gases when generating electricity, certain processes used to build and fuel the plants do, such as transporting the fuel to the plants in trucks. However, dozens of studies show that nuclear plants’ life cycle impacts are actually more comparable to those of renewable energy, such as wind and solar, and far less than those of coal-fired or natural gas-fired power plants.
In the end we can say that nuclear energy could significantly contribute to reducing the cause of global warming. Having said that it can also be a highly risky option if we shut the eyes to the many risks of nuclear power.
12. What can be inferred about greenhouse gases from paragraph 1?
A. They can be restricted within a short time.
B. They will reduce people’s average lifetime.
C. They will keep increasing for decades to come.
D. They have a lasting impact on global warming.
13 What is the purpose of the IEA’s investigation?
A. To analyze the impact of global warming.
B. To identify ways to reduce CO₂ emissions.
C. To predict future energy consumption worldwide.
D. To promote construction of nuclear power plants.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards nuclear energy?
A. Tolerant. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Conservative.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Solutions to Dealing with CO₂ Emissions
B. IEA Energy Outlook for Decades to Come
C. Is Nuclear Energy the Answer to Global Warming?
D. How Can Human Beings Survive Global Warming?

As an English learner, we sometimes get questions like this: “How can I speak English with more confidence?” That is a great question. ___16___ Today, we have several pieces of advice to help you.
Every day, the most important person you talk to is yourself. That’s to say, your own thoughts matter. If you lack confidence as an English speaker, you may say things like, “English is too hard” “I’m so sorry for my English.” What’s worse, you are sure to start believing them. ___17___
To sound more confident, speak slowly enough so that people can easily hear you. Many English learners worry that speaking too slow will make them sound inexperienced. ___18___ So avoid worrying that you are speaking too slow for the people around you.
___19___ If you are not confident, you may try to say as little as possible. For example, if asked what people’s favorite color is, an English learner may give a short, direct response like, “blue”, while a native English speaker is likely to say, “Well, to be quite honest, I don’t really have an actual color, but I guess I may go for something like blue or grey.”
Read out loud. Reading out loud can help build confidence in how your English sounds. So next time you are reading a website, book or something else that you enjoy, take a few minutes to read the material aloud. Before reading aloud, read the story silently first. The second time, if there is audio, you can listen to the speakers as you read alone silently. ___20___ Then, try listening to the speaker and reading out loud at the same time.
A. But you are more likely to make mistakes if speaking too fast.
B. Then, speak loudly enough that anyone in the same room can easily hear you.
C. So replace unhelpful thoughts with better ones when speaking.
D. Using long sentences shows that you speak English confidently.
E. Then, try to read the story out alone.
F. Speak in complete sentences and give longer responses when possible.
G. Whatever language we are learning, we would all love to speak confidently.

Arif often got very lucky in situations where other students just couldn’t make any difference. Many students in his class were impressed and thought his intelligence was behind his success. This made Arif overconfident and think whether he worked hard or not, he would pass his exams.
The mid-term exams were very near, and the school announced a few days off so that the children could study well during their break. Most of the students worked hard to do well in the exams. However, Arif wasted his break on scrolling through (滚屏) his phones.
Arif had a close friend, Oliver, who was also his classmate. Oliver kept on warning Arif to focus on his studies and reminded him that luck didn’t work every time. But Arif turned a deaf ear to him and thought that luck would always be on his side.
Arif’s mother had high expectations of his academic performance. Arif, on the other hand, was a typical teenager who loved to spend his time chatting with his friends and scrolling through social media. Despite his mother’s constant reminders to focus on his studies, Arif couldn’t resist the temptation (诱惑) of his phone. He would often sneak a glance (偷看一眼) at his notifications, hoping to catch up on the latest news. Every time his mother entered his room, Arif pretended to read while his mind was elsewhere.
On the day of the first paper, which was mathematics, Arif felt overconfident, thinking his luck would work and he would top the class. However, as the question sheets were handed out, Arif’s confidence quickly turned to panic. The calculations (计算) were complex and unfamiliar.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. D

“People with a positive emotional style may have different immune (免疫的) responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
D. Go on with.
9. What was the purpose of Cohen’s new study?
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11.

Having said that, it can also be a highly risky option if we shut the eyes to the many risks of nuclear power.
12. What can be inferred about greenhouse gases from paragraph 1?
A. They can be restricted within a short time.
B. They will reduce people’s average lifetime.
C. They will keep increasing for decades to come.
D. They have a lasting impact on global warming.
13. What is the purpose of the IEA’s investigation?
A. To analyze the impact of global warming.
B. To identify ways to reduce CO₂ emissions.
C. To predict future energy consumption worldwide.
D. To promote construction of nuclear power plants.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards nuclear energy?
A. Tolerant. B. Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Conservative.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Solutions to Dealing with CO₂ Emissions
B. IEA Energy Outlook for Decades to Come
C. Is Nuclear Energy the Answer to Global Warming?
D. How Can Human Beings Survive Global Warming?
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. C

Is Nuclear Energy the Answer to Global Warming?最适合作本文最佳标题。故选C项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
【答案】16. G 17. C 18. A 19. F 20. E
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些建议以帮助我们更加自信地说英语。
【16题详解】
根据上文“As an English learner, we sometimes get questions like this: “How can I speak English with more confidence?” That is a great question.(作为一个英语学习者,我们有时会遇到这样的问题:“我怎样才能更自信地说英语?”这是个好问题。)”可知,作为英语学习者,我们很想知道如何更自信地说英语。选项G“Whatever language we are learning, we would all love to speak confidently.(不管我们学什么语言,我们都喜欢自信地说。)”延续上文内容,指出每个语言学习者都想自信地说这种语言;同时引出下一句“Today, we have several pieces of advice to help you.(今天,我们有几条建议来帮助你。)”,起承上启下的作用。故选G。
【17题详解】
根据上文内容“Every day, the most important person you talk to is yourself. That’s to say, your own thoughts matter. If you lack confidence as an English speaker, you may say things like, “English is too hard” “I’m so sorry for my English.” What’s worse, you are sure to start believing them.(每天,你交谈的最重要的人就是你自己。也就是说,你自己的想法很重要。如果你对说英语缺乏信心,你可能会说,“英语太难了”,“我很抱歉我的英语。”更糟糕的是,你肯定会开始相信这些话。)”可知,本段讲述的是自己的想法非常重要。而空前内容则指出,缺乏自信会带来糟糕的后果。选项C“So replace unhelpful thoughts with better ones when speaking.(所以说话的时候,用好的想法代替无用的想法。)”点明本段主要内容,指出消极的想法会有糟糕的后果,所以我们应该用好的想法代替不好的想法。故选C。
【18题详解】
根据空前内容“English learners worry that speaking too slow will make them sound inexperienced.(许多英语学习者担心说得太慢会让他们听起来缺乏经验。)”可知,很多人都担心自己说得太慢会让别人觉得自己缺乏经验。选项A“But you are more likely to make mistakes if speaking too fast.(但是如果你说得太快,你就更容易出错。)”与上文形成转折,同时指出说得慢可能会让别人觉得自己缺乏经验,但是说得太快容易出错。从而因此下文“So avoid worrying that you are speaking too slow for the people around you.(所以不要担心你对周围的人说得太慢。)”。故选A。
【19题详解】
空处为段首句,为本段主要内容。根据下文“If you are not confident, you may try to say as little as possible. For example, if asked what people’s favorite color is, an English learner may give a short, direct response like, “blue”, while a native English speaker is likely to say, “Well, to be quite honest, I don’t really have an actual color, but I guess I may go for something like blue or grey.”(如果你不自信,你可能会尽量少说话。例如,如果被问到人们最喜欢的颜色是什么,英语学习者可能会给出一个简短而直接的回答,比如“蓝色”,而母语为英语的人可能会说,“嗯,说实话,我真的没有具体的颜色,但我想我可能会喜欢蓝色或灰色之类的颜色。”)”可知,不自信的时候,我们会尽可能少说话,但是说英语的人会说比较长的句子。由此可判断,本段主要建议读者说长句子。选项F“Speak in complete sentences and give longer responses when possible.(用完整的句子说话,尽可能给出较长的回答。)”与本段内容相符,指出用完整的句子说话会让我们自信地说英语。故选F。
【20题详解】
根据空前“Before reading aloud, read the story silently first. The second time, if there is audio, you can listen to the speakers as you read alone silently. (在大声朗读之前,先默读故事。第二次,如果有音频,你可以在独自阅读时听扬声器。)”以及空后“Then, try listening to the speaker and reading out loud at the same time.(然后,试着一边听录音一边大声朗读。)”可知,上下文主要讲述的是如何进行朗读。选项E“Then, try to read the story put alone.(然后,试着单独阅读这个故事。)”与上下文内容一致,指出我们先默读故事,再听音频,再次阅读,最后一边听录音一边大声朗读。故选E。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
His mind went blank as he stared at the page, feeling fully unprepared for the challenge ahead. Despite his efforts, Arif could not solve most of the problems on the paper.

【答案】 For the first time, Arif felt down. As he arrived home that day, he knew that he couldn’t afford to waste time any more, and he had to focus on the remaining subjects. However, the reality of the situation hit him hard. He had already idled away his study break, and he was left with little time to prepare for the upcoming exams. Each day brought a new challenge, and he found himself constantly playing catch-up.
One week after the exams, the results were going to be announced. Arif’s heart raced as he waited for his name to be called, hoping for good news and a sense of relief. But as his grades were revealed, his hopes were broken. He had failed in three subjects. Without a second thought, his parents took away his phone as a punishment. Arif came to realize that luck was never a trustworthy companion, nor could it get him through life. The only path to success was hard work and unwavering dedication — a lesson he had learned at a great cost.
