Alex and his classmates are working on a project about the Great Lakes. Here is the information sheet they have made.
Part 1: Facts
The Great Lakes—Ontario, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Superior—are five freshwater giants. They span across eight US states and two Canadian provinces.
首页
Part 2: Comparison
•Lake Ontario
This lake has the smallest surface area at 7,336 square miles. Three dams(大坝) control the flow of water downstream and include locks so boats can enter from the Atlantic.
•Lake Huron
This is the second largest lake by surface area in the system and home to Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest freshwater island.
•Lake Michigan
It is joined to Lake Huron by the five-mile-wide Straits(海峡) of Mackinac, though they are still classed as two separate bodies.
首页
•Lake Erie
With a depth of 64 metres, this is the shallowest of the Great Lakes. It is generally the warmest, but also gets frozen more quickly than the others.
•Lake Superior
At 406 metres deep, the distance from the lake’s surface to its deepest point is about the same as the length of four football pitches.
Part 3:
Covering an area of 94,250 square miles, these huge bodies of water take up more than one-fifth of the world’s total freshwater. The Great Lakes provide drinking water for more than 40 million people, important shipping routes for more than 800 ocean ships, and keep a rich ecosystem for fishing and agriculture. They also support wildlife, the national economy and the environment.

A new movie named “731” will come out. It tells the story of Japan’s Unit 731, which carried out terrible experiments(实验) on humans in Harbin during World War Ⅱ. Directed by Zhao Linshan, the film shows how this unit caught people and used them for cruel experiments and how Chinese people fought against the enemy.
For example, a street seller named Wang Yongzhang was tricked into joining so-called “medical tests” with a false promise of freedom. However, he and others experienced freezing tests, poison gas, and other painful experiments. Surprisingly, the leader of Unit 731 was never punished.
首页
Today, the Unit 731 Museum in Harbin keeps the memory of this history alive. It has around 100,000 pieces of evidence(证据). At least 3,000 people from China, Korea, Mongolia, and Soviet were killed in the experiments. Jin Chengmin, the head of the museum, worked as the film’s historical expert. He believes it is important never to forget this history.

Imagine that a cool bamboo-like grass can be used to make green energy. Scientists at Landuo Biotech, a business in Wuhan, have created one such plant recently. They name it “super giant reed”(超级芦竹).
Since 2012, the Landuo team have collected over 1,000 wild giant reeds for experiments. As a result, more than 40 varieties of super giant reed have been “born”. In the Landuo’s factory, hundreds of young reeds are grown in glass bottles. Fully grown, super giant reeds are cut and put in a special place without O2. The Landuo team heat them up to make natural gas, which can then be used for energy.
首页
Thanks to the scientists‘ efforts, super giant reed has a biomass(生物量) three times that of wild giant reed. A kilogram of super giant reed also has 4,000 to 4,500 kilocalories(千卡) of energy. So, super giant reed is a great choice for taking the place of fossil fuels(化石燃料).
What’s more, growing super giant reed helps a lot. Planting 13,000 hectares of it can produce 0.45 to 1.5 million tons of fuel a year. 40 million hectares of super giant reed can be used instead of 2.2 billion(1 billion=1,000 million) tons of coal and can cut CO2 emissions(排放) by 4 billion tons in China every year.
首页
Super giant reed is also well-suited for growing on some land like beaches, wetlands and salty lands. Once a reed is planted, it can be cut and used many times during the next 15 to 20 years. By the end of 2024, over 3,300 hectares of super giant reed had been planted across 53 areas in China.
At present, China is developing this new energy source—super giant reed and we hope that it can help to make our planet cleaner and cleaner.

①China’s home-grown aircraft(国产飞机) are playing an important role in protecting the country’s green mountains. Many models of newly developed large unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)(无人机) are showing their ability to protect the environment.
②In recent years, they have been used to do some dangerous things like putting out forest fires. In March 2024, a big forest fire started in Yajiang County, Sichuan. It seemed very dangerous. ▲ The UAVs used special cameras to take pictures of the fire. These pictures helped firefighters know where the fire was. Other planes dropped water on the fire. Soon, they stopped the fire from spreading.
首页
③Another cool aircraft that can help to control big fire is the AG 600 “Kunlong”. It is the world’s biggest plane that can land on water. It can carry a lot of water and fill up fast. In tests, it could control big fires with just a few water drops.
④Besides helping in the fire, these new aircrafts were also used for drought(干旱). MA-60 is such a new style. In the spring of 2024, MA-60 increased the rounds of rainfall in Shaanxi Province. They have also played a key role in facing the challenges of the weather.
首页
⑤The “Yilong”-2H drone helps in dry places, too. It can fly long distances and carry a lot. This allows it to go deep into areas with rain-forming clouds and release substances(释放物质) to make it rain, helping regions that often suffer from drought.
⑥As technology gets better, we can expect more new and creative aircraft. These future planes won’t just fight natural disasters more efficiently. They’ll not only help in other environmental work but also reduce the influence of natural disasters and protect people’s lives and wealth.
