With its rolling hills, beautiful waterfalls, and rich woodlands, the Durham Dales in England provides a natural habitat for birds — and it’s also home to zoologist and artist Sara Cox. Since childhood, she has always loved birds. Today, she creates detailed bird sculptures (雕塑) made from fine metal wire, combining scientific knowledge with artistic creativity to raise awareness about the challenges facing bird populations and to inspire people to care for them.
As a child, Sara spent much of her time outdoors with her brothers — exploring the garden or walking in the countryside. These early experiences helped her develop a deep appreciation for the natural world. At the same time, creativity was a strong presence in her home; her father, an engineer, enjoyed welding (焊接) and building, while her mother made pottery in her spare time. Their hands-on skills and artistic sensibility gave Sara both technical and creative foundations. Later, when she moved to Mickleton 20 years ago, the surrounding wildlife became a powerful source of inspiration. Observing birds up close in their natural habitat helped her find her own artistic voice and connect her love of nature with sculpture.
Sara’s wire bird sculptures are the result of careful observation and detailed study. She will sit outside for hours, drawing and observing the birds’ movements — right down to how their muscles work and how they balance their weight. She also visits museums to study bird so she can understand the body structure beneath the feathers. “To sculpt a bird accurately, I need to know what’s underneath,” she explains.
Her sculptures have been shown in national exhibitions, including one held by the Royal Society of British Artists in London. They can also be seen along nature paths, such as at the Durham Wildlife Trust’s Low Barns reserve. Whether showed in galleries or out in the wild, her work has been praised for its scientific accuracy, emotional impact, and ability to encourage greater appreciation for bird species.
4. What is the purpose for Sara Cox to create bird sculptures?
A. To promote her hometown. B. To show her artistic talent.
C. To inspire people to protect birds. D. To support scientific research.
5. Which can best replace the underlined phrase “find her own artistic voice” in paragraph 2?
A. Deepen her love for art. B. Discover her personal value.
C. Become more powerful in society. D. Develop her unique artistic style.
6. What good qualities does Sara show when sculpting birds?
A. Patience and carefulness. B. Calmness and determination.
C. Confidence and kindness. D. Creativity and consideration.
7. Why is the Royal Society of British Artists mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To give an example of top art groups in the UK. B. To explain the further study Sara did.
C. To contrast national and local art exhibitions. D. To stress the recognition Sara received.

A rescue has been carried out and flood warnings are in place in Far North Queensland as Cyclone (气旋) Jasper caused widespread damage and flooding.
Rescue workers were called to Mossman, a town near Port Douglas, at about 12:40 am, where 18 people had to be moved to safety due to dangerous flooding and then were taken to an evacuation (疏散) centre in the local library. Around 40,000 homes and businesses lost power, and the Captain Cook Highway was cut between Cairns and Port Douglas.
Although Cyclone Jasper was downgraded to a tropical (热带的) low on Thursday, it was a wild night, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Senior Meteorologist Laura Boekel said, “This event is not over. We have seen about half a meter of rainfall in the last 24 hours across Far North Queensland.”
The Bureau of Meteorology warned of rising river levels in the Mossman River; which could reach levels similar to the floods in January 2019. Areas around Wujal Wiujal, Cape Tribulation, and Port Douglas faced the worst of the cyclone, and nearby communities like Palm Cove and Cairns were also affected.
A weather warning remained in place across Far North Queensland. People from Cooktown to Port Douglas were overnight warned to prepare for possible flooding. People in the storm’s path were being warned not to be fooled by the calm conditions inside the cyclone’s 70 km-wide eye, which was expected to take hours to cross over some areas. “The eye is really big,” Boekel said on Wednesday night. “There’s a period of calm conditions in the eye itself. But you can’t pick that time period. Please stay in a safe place and wait for the whole system to pass.” The cyclone was producing wind speeds of 140 km/h, with centre wind speeds of 100 km/h.
8. Why were rescue workers called to Mossman?
A. A storm damaged the local library. B. Some cars broke down on the highway.
C People were stuck in the flood. D. A flood was expected to come soon.
9. What can we learn about Cyclone Jasper according to the text?
A. It quickly lost strength but still caused some noticeable problems.
B. It remained strong and dangerous even after being downgraded.
C. It mainly affected inland regions rather than coastal areas in Queensland.
D. It moved slowly and caused most of its damage through heavy rainfall.
10. What is Boekel’s suggestion for the people in the affected areas?
A. Stay inside the cyclone’s 70 km-wide eye.
B. Observe the half-meter rainfall for 24 hours.
C. Keep safe until the storm completely passes.
D. Report the wind speeds in a timely manner.
11. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A weather forecast. B. A daily newspaper.
C. A safety guide. D. A science report.
D
From checking social media every minute to being lost in computer games, we tend to overuse technology. “For many people, a moment without your phone or laptop looks like a lifetime,” the Daily Mail commented.
A computer model called Mindy may make many people think twice. A team of scientists built a 3-D model to uncover the impacts technology can have on human bodies in less than 800 years.
“Spending hours looking down at your phone hurts your neck and throws your spine (脊椎) off balance,” explained Caleb Backe, a health expert. Then, the muscles in our neck need to spend extra effort to support the head, making our back bent and neck wide. “The way we hold our phones can cause stress in certain points of contact — causing text claw (爪子),” Nikola Djordjevic, a practicing physician told the team. It affects the elbows too, causing pain in the arm. That’s why Mindy has a 90-degree elbow, and her hands look like she’s always holding a mobile phone.
Some people also commented that human evolution (进化) may not work this way. They argue that only features with actual advantages would be kept throughout the years. For example, characteristics that can increase the rate of survival — stronger immune systems, better resistance to diseases, or improved physical strength are more likely to remain in the human population than the changes caused by negative influence of technology.
However, current human lifestyles still raise concerns. A model called Emma was built by researchers to show how the way people work at their desks could change them in 20 years. The research team built Emma based on the health issues mentioned by over 3,000 workers in different countries. Emma’s back stays bent, and her legs are out of shape due to the time people spend in front of computers. With little time spent outdoors and in the sun, her skin is gray, too.
12. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The working theory of Mindy.
B. The bodily effects of overusing mobile phones.
C. The influence of the computer model.
D. The proper ways of using mobile phones.
13. Why do some people doubt the predictions of the 3-D model?
A. Only features benefiting humans are likely to remain over time.
B. The negative effects of technology may become less serious.
C. People may learn to use technology in a healthier way.
D. The model are based on limited real-life data.
14. What does Emma look like?
A. Smart. B. Fascinating. C. Upset. D. Abnormal
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Computer Models: Serve as Helpers?
B. Mobile Phones: Wise Use or Misuse?
C. Could Phones Speed Up Human Evolution?
D. Could Technology Reshape Our Bodies?

Fiona Famous was a very popular girl at school. She was clever and fun, and got on well with everyone. It was no accident that Fiona was so popular. From an early age she had made an effort to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party, and from time to time she would give presents to everybody. She was such a busy girl, with so many friends, that she hardly got a chance to spend time with individual friends. However, she felt very lucky; no other girl had so many friends at school and in the neighborhood.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day. On that day, at school, everyone was having a great time, drawing, painting, and giving gifts. That day in class everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from all her friends.
However, when all the presents had been made and shared out among classmates, Fiona was the only one who didn't receive a present! She felt upset, and spent hours crying. How could it be that? So much effort had been made to make so many friends, but in the end no one saw her as their best friend. Everyone came and tried to comfort her. But each one only stayed for a short time before leaving.
This was exactly what Fiona had done so many times to others.
She realized that she was a good companion (伙伴),but she had not been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone and had tried to pay attention to everyone, but now she found out that it was not enough to create true friendship.
When she got home that night with tears in her eyes, Fiona turned to her mother for help. She asked her mother where she could find true friends.

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. D

C. People were stuck in the flood.
C A safety guide. D. A science report.

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. D

【解析】
【导语】本文为说明文。文章主要讲述了体育与艺术之间的关系有助于培养韧性、创造力和成长,最终提升艺术能力,促进艺术家的全面发展。
【16题详解】
根据上文“The relationship between sports and arts is obvious. There are many striking similarities between them. As an art enthusiast, I notice people’s narrow view of creativity — limiting arts to mere drawing-is unreasonable. Arts go beyond this, requiring skill and imagination to express ideas.(体育与艺术之间的关系显而易见,二者之间存在诸多显著相似之处。 故选A。
【17题详解】
设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“Athletes’ self-control enhances (promote) artistic effectiveness-few would run 90 minutes for fun, yet passion drives such commitment (投入). This determined spirit mirrors artistic mastery. Just as athletes push their limits to achieve top performance, artists can channel the same drive into improving their skills and expanding their creative horizons.(运动员的自我控制能力提升了艺术表现力——很少有人会为了好玩而跑上90分钟,但正是热情驱使他们如此投入。这种坚定的精神与艺术造诣如出一辙。正如运动员不断挑战极限以追求最佳表现一样,艺术家也可以将同样的动力投入到提升技能和拓展创作视野中。)”可知,本段主要讲述了激情驱使着运动员追求卓越,所以B项“Sports enhance passion for always fighting for the best(体育能激发人们始终追求卓越的热情)”说明体育能激发人们始终追求卓越的热情,符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选B。
【18题详解】
设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“The competitive nature of sports fosters a sense of resilience (韧性). Artists who engage in sports learn to deal with failure and setbacks, enabling them to approach their craft with a more determined and positive mindset.(体育的竞争性培养了人们的韧性。参与体育运动的艺术家学会应对失败和挫折,这使他们能够以更加坚定和积极的心态投入到艺术创作中。)”可知,体育运动的竞争性有许多优势,E项“It helps them stay focused, handle challenges and improve work(这帮助他们保持专注力,应对挑战,并提升(艺术)创作水平。)”是对前文的总结,其中“It”指代前文“a more determined and positive mindset”,符合文意。故选E。
【19题详解】
根据前文“Participating in team sports also teaches valuable lessons in cooperation and communication.(参与团队运动还能教会人们宝贵的合作与沟通技巧。)”可知,本段主要讲述参加团队运动可以提高艺术家的合作和沟通的能力,所以G项“These are very important for artists frequently taking part in group projects(这些(品质)对于经常参与团体项目的艺术家来说非常重要)”符合本段主题,强调其重要性,后文“such as theater performances or gallery showcases.(比如戏剧表演或画廊展示。)”是对此的举例,符合文意。故选G。
【20题详解】
根据上文的“The devotion and passion developed through sports can significantly enhance artistic abilities.(通过体育运动培养出的专注与热情能够显著提升艺术能力。)”可知,通过运动培养的奉献精神和激情可以显著提高艺术能力,这里在说运动对艺术的影响,选项F“The commitment to excellence in one area naturally impacts the other(对某一领域卓越品质的追求自然会对另一领域产生影响)”进一步说明了这种相互影响的关系,承接上文。故选F。

She had tried not to argue with anyone, and had tried to pay attention to everyone, but now she found out that it was not enough to create true friendship.
When she got home that night with tears in her eyes, Fiona turned to her mother for help. She asked her mother where she could find true friends.

【答案】One possible version:
Fiona's mother listened carefully to her story. Then she said, “If you really want true friends, you will have to give them real time and affection. For a true friend you must always be available, in good times and bad. You can't be a close friend to everybody. There just isn't enough time to be available for everyone, so it's only possible to have a few true friends. The others will be common friends or people you know, but they won't be close friends.”
Hearing this, Fiona decided to change her ways so that she could finally have some true friends. That night, in bed, she thought about what she should do. She thought about her mother. Her mother was always willing to help her; she put up with all of Fiona's dislikes and problems; she always forgave her; she loved her a great deal.. That was what makes friends!
