Let’s review Think: What problems do astronauts face during space missions? Share your ideas with your partner. Examples: ① Astronauts must stick their sleeping bags to the wall. ② If astronauts do not exercise regularly, they will get very weak. ③ ... Pre-listening Look at the picture and think: ① What can you see in the picture? ② What problem do you think this lesson will be about? Is it a big problem? Space junk. I think it could be a big problem because... You will listen to a lecture about space junk. Can you guess which topics the speaker will mention? What is space junk? Where does it come from? Why is it a big problem? What can we do about it? While-listening 1. Listen for the gist—check your predictions Tick the things mentioned in the lecture. What is space junk?  Where does it come from?  Why is it a big problem?  What can we do about it?  √ √ √ The main idea of the lecture: What space junk is and why it is a big problem to us. While-listening 2. Match the sections with key words—build the structure ① What is space junk? ② What types of space junk are there? ③ Why is space junk a big problem? A. The dangers of space junk B. The definition of space junk C. Examples of space junk While-listening Detailed listening Tip: Read the questions before you listen. Pay attention to key words from the questions (e.g. gloves, satellites, rockets) while you listen to the lecture. While-listening Detailed listening (Activity 3, P104): Tip: Read the questions before you listen. Try to connect the questions to the topics of the different parts of the lecture. Pay attention to key words from the questions (e.g. gloves, satellites, rockets) while you listen to the lecture. A & B C C √ √ √ √ √ √ Which part do these questions refer to? Definition Types of space junk Dangers of space junk Space junk Definition __________ in space, (e.g. parts of old __________) Types of space junk __________ that stopped working and couldn’t be brought back things dropped by __________ during the spacewalk (e.g. cameras, __________, tool bags) Dangers of space junk can __________ a spacecraft or satellite creates more junk in __________ can make space missions very __________, and even make space travel __________ While-listening Detailed listening: Listen again and complete the notes. unwanted objects rockets satellites astronauts gloves destroy orbit dangerous impossible Post-listening (Read audio script) There are tens of thousands of man-made objects in orbit around the Earth. Many of them are useful things, like space stations and weather satellites. However, people have left lots of unwanted objects in space too, such as parts of old rockets. These objects are known as space junk. Since the 1950s, people have sent over 10,000 satellites into space. Many of these satellites have stopped working, but they are still in orbit because it is too expensive to bring them back to the Earth. Astronauts have also dropped things during their spacewalks, such as cameras, gloves and tool bags. These objects continue to orbit the Earth as space junk. Space junk is a big problem, and it is getting worse. Every year, we send more and more things into orbit, and this means more and more space junk in orbit too. Most pieces of space junk are very small, but they can still be very dangerous. Objects in orbit, such as satellites and spacecraft, are all travelling very, very fast. This means a small piece of space junk can destroy a spacecraft or satellite. When this happens, the spacecraft or satellite is broken up into hundreds of pieces, and there will be even more space junk in orbit. Scientists are very worried about space junk because it can make space missions very dangerous. If there is too much space junk in orbit, it will become impossible to travel into space. Countries around the world need to work together to solve this difficult problem. What can we do to solve the problem of space junk? Post-listening Pair work Can satellites be recycled? Are there ways to make this easier? Should there be laws about cleaning up space junk? Can astronauts do anything to avoid dropping things during spacewalks? Can we build machines that can collect space junk? Come up with solutions to the problem. Post-listening Give a summary of the lecture. Use the notes below to help you. Solutions Build machines that can collect space junk, ... Look & answer What can you see in the picture? Where is it? Do you think it will be possible for humans to visit Mars? Do you think Chinese astronauts will land on Mars in the future? Will humans one day live on Mars? Why or why not? Listen to a dialogue. What are they talking about? Read the dialogue with your partner. More examples of expressing possibility and impossibility. Let’s debate! Will it be possible for humans to live on Mars in the future? Step 1 Pick your side! Team A (We CAN live on Mars in the future) vs Team B (We CAN’T live on Mars in the future) Let’s debate! Step 2 In your team, look at the facts below. Discuss which of these facts support your opinion. Then find more facts. → Team A: You think that humans will be able to live on Mars in the future. → Team B: You don’t think humans will be able to live on Mars in the future. Facts that support Team B’s opinion. Facts that support Team A’s opinion. Can you think of more evidence(证据) to support your opinion? Discuss and write down 2–3 strong points for your team. Let’s debate! State your opinion. Provide facts and reasons that support your argument. You can use phrases like “It is likely that …” or “It is unlikely that …” to show that something is / isn’t possible. Listen to the other team’s response. Pay attention to their arguments and think of ways to respond. Continue debating until the time is up. My opinion: Humans will / will not be able to live on Mars. Reason 1: __________ Example 1: __________ If the other team ________, we will say ________________.
