They often spent whole afternoons there, laughing and enjoying the quiet water. But they were always surprised to see an old fisherman sitting by the nearby river, where the water moved fast and made loud noises. The young people thought the old man was a little silly."How can anyone catch fish in such wild water?"they said to each other. They were sure he would give up soon. But week after week, the fisherman kept coming back. One sunny afternoon, one of the boys walked over to the old man."Why do you fish here?" he asked."The water is too quick. There can't be any fish!"The fisherman didn't answer.Instead, he picked up his basket and turned it over.Out fell several large, fat fish, still jumping on the grass. The young man couldn't believe his eyes."How did you catch such big fish here?"he asked. The old man smiled kindly."Small fish are fine in the lake-there's just enough oxygen for them. But big fish need more. They swim where the water moves fast, because big waves bring more oxygen. Most people think fish prefer calm water, but that's not always true."He paused, then added,"Strong waves may look difficult for fish, but they actually help them grow bigger and stronger.Sometimes, what seems hard can be what helps us most." The young man listened quietly. He realized the old fisherman was not just talking about fish-he was talking about life. That day,the young man learned something he would never forget: 61.What did the young friends think of the old fisherman at first? 62.Why were the big fish in the fast river, not the calm lake? 63.Complete the story:What did the young man learn?(At least 10 words) 64.Give a title to this story. 第10页共12页 65.Share an experience that a challenge helped you become better.(Within 20 words) B Helping Hippos In Africa, hippos live in the rivers. One day,Karen walked along a river. She counted the hippos. There were not as many hippos as there had been.It hadn't rained for a long time. Now there was a bad drought and the river was drying up. The animals that lived near this river had now water or grass. Many of them were dying. People were trying to help other animals. But no one was helping the hippos. The hippos were starving. They were coming out of the river to look for food. There was nothing for them to eat. Helping the Hippos Karen put food in the river. Then, she waited.Hippos are not used to being fed by people. She didn't know what they would do.The hippos, however, were so hungry that they ate the food. Karen made waterholes, but the river dried up more. So,hippo families had to share one waterhole.Sharing was a problem. C In small villages, people often say hello to their neighbors in stores, on the streets, or outside their homes. But in cities, many people don’t greet their neighbors, even when they are standing in line at a supermarket. A study shows that greeting neighbors, especially up to six people a day, is really good for you. The study found that greeting others can make you happy. The magic number is six. When you greet up to six people, your happiness score (幸福指数)goes up. After that, the score shows no further rise. More than 4,000 people took part in the research. It tested (测试) people’s social happiness, physical happiness, community happiness and more. People who greeted six neighbors had a high happiness score. But those who didn’t greet anyone had a low happiness score. You may think that saying hello is only about social happiness, but that’s not true. Regular (经常的) greetings also improve your physical and community happiness. ▲ If you feel your community is safe, it’s more possible for you to talk to people. Walking around your community can make you feel better physically. Dan Witters, the leader of the study, said, “We don’t mean that you should know the person well. Just stop and talk to them. The more people you greet, the more chances you have to start a conversation.” Remember, saying hello often is a good way to improve your own happiness. 36. How does the writer start the topic? A. What can we learn from Dan Witters’ words? A. The more people you know, the happier you are. B. Saying hello may help people start a conversation. C. Nothing improves happiness more than conversations. D. Knowing people is very important before greeting them. 40. What is the main idea of the text? A. D On a peaceful farm in ancient Greece lived a kind miller (磨坊主) named Agathon and his son Tebelis, who was known across the land as the laziest (最懒的) boy for sleeping all day long. One morning, Agathon said, “Son, I must visit a friend. Watch the mill and keep the cow turning the stone.” Tebelis answered sleepily, “Yes, Father,” The cow that turned the millstone soon grew tired and stopped. “Well,” Tebelis smiled, “I suppose that’s enough work for one day.” He lay down and fell asleep. They often spent whole afternoons there, laughing and enjoying the quiet water. But they were always surprised to see an old fisherman sitting by the nearby river, where the water moved fast and made loud noises. The young people thought the old man was a little silly. “How can anyone catch fish in such wild water?” they said to each other. They were sure he would give up soon. But week after week, the fisherman kept coming back. One sunny afternoon, one of the boys walked over to the old man. “Why do you fish here?” he asked. “The water is too quick. There can’t be any fish!” The fisherman didn’t answer. Instead, he picked up his basket and turned it over. Out fell several large, fat fish, still jumping on the grass. The young man couldn’t believe his eyes. “How did you catch such big fish here?” he asked. The old man smiled kindly. “Small fish are fine in the lake—there’s just enough oxygen for them. But big fish need more. They swim where the water moves fast, because big waves bring more oxygen. Most people think fish prefer calm water, but that’s not always true.” He paused, then added, “Strong waves may look difficult for fish, but they actually help them grow bigger and stronger. Sometimes, what seems hard can be what helps us most.” The young man listened quietly. He realized the old fisherman was not just talking about fish—he was talking about life. That day, the young man learned something he would never forget: ___________________________. 61. One day, Karen walked along a river. She counted the hippos. There were not as many hippos as there had been. It hadn't rained for a long time. Then, she waited. Hippos are not used to being fed by people. She didn’t know what they would do. The hippos, however, were so hungry that they ate the food. The big bulls(雄性河马) began to fight with each other. A hippo was killed in the fight. Karen needed to do something. She wrote letters to people asking for help. Many people sent money to her. Karen had enough money to build a dam(堤坝). Now, the hippos had their own space. Learning About Hippos Karen has watched and taken care of hippos for many years. She knows a lot about them. It is strange, but hippos like licking(揍) crocodiles. She has seen hippos pulling prey(猎物) off crocodiles, too. Sometimes Karen takes people to see the hippos. She tells them that if a hippo charges, they must run fast and climb a tree! Hippos Are Important Hippos can be very dangerous, but they are important. Their big bodies make tracks on land.
