Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
In 1938, after the destructive rampage (狂暴行为) against Jews known as Kristallnacht, my mother, Ilse Ludomer, was forced out of her home in a small German town with her parents. They stayed with relatives in Berlin and desperately searched for a way to escape Hitler's rule.
My father, Erich Jacobsohn, already had a law degree in 1939 though he was forbidden by Nazi law to practice. He returned to his parents' home in northern Germany, where he and his father were sent to a work camp after Kristallnacht. Other prisoners later went to Auschwitz, but Erich's mother managed to purchase the release of her husband and son from the Nazis. The parents then decided to send Erich away.
③Shanghai was the only option, the last place in the world that would take in Jewish refugees (难民). That was what my parents discovered when they fled Hitler's Germany. It felt a little like sailing to the end of the Earth, my father often said.
④And so Ilse and Erich, permitted only items like utensils (餐具), clothes and photographs and no more than ten Deutsche Marks (德国马克), made their way to Italy, where they boarded ships bound for China. Shanghai had no visa requirements and, surprisingly, had a support system ready for them. Their Chinese neighbors, generally much poorer than the refugees, were always kind.
My parents became part of a community in Shanghai of some18,000 European Jews who learned to live in crowded rooms, used chamber pots (便壶), and were often only able to eat one hot meal a day from a communal (公共的) kitchen. However, they also had schools, cultural institutions, and a thriving social life complete with Viennese cafés. And more importantly, they survived and enjoyed their youths. My mother, quick to make friends, became the breadwinner in her family as a waitress. My father, who knew English, became a translator and English tutor.
They finally met in Hongkou during an air raid drill (防空演习) in 1945, shortly before the end of the war. My father, who had moved into an apartment near the one where my mother lived, had already noticed her. He made sure to stand next to her and introduced himself. Their romance began. A year later, they married. The following year, I was born. Three months later, we were on a ship bound for the United States.
Recounting this fascinating and little-known history is definitely a statement on the present refugee situation. The Jews were able to set up shops and become a community there, displaying strength, courage and resilience (适应力), largely because the Chinese made the Jews feel welcome.

Anna Sewell (1820-1878) wrote only one novel during her lifetime, a book describing the life of a beautiful, black horse, Black Beauty. The book is written from the point of view of the horse which helps us understand the influence that good and bad treatment had on the horses in the story. Black Beauty had a great effect on the treatment of animals and changed the way that people thought about horses.
Black Beauty spent his early years in a picturesque, green field with his mother and some other young horses. When it was time for him to be trained to serve men, he was gently and patiently broken in by his master. He learned to wear a saddle (马鞍) and bridle (缰绳), and carry a human quietly on his back.
At his next home, one of the horses with whom he shared a stable (马厩), had the reputation of being wild and aggressive. This horse, Ginger, said this was because she had been treated very badly at a young age. Although her new master and his employees were very kind, she could not help being suspicious of men.
Black Beauty's kind owner was forced to move abroad for the sake of his wife's health. This marked the beginning of a string of owners with different personalities. Some were well-intentioned but allowed their grooms (马夫) full control of their animals. Unfortunately, in Black Beauty's case, this often proved to be harmful.
Fortunately, after some time Black Beauty was bought by Jerry Barker, a kind cab owner. There, he became a very well-loved horse. Although being a cab horse was very hard work, Black Beauty was given good food to eat, a warm stable to sleep in and lots of kind words. Black Beauty cared for him. He always did very happy there.
⑥ The pleasant life came to a sudden end when Jerry was forced to sell his horses. After several other owners, Black Beauty was sold to Nicholas Skinner. He had to work very hard with no rest, insufficient food and poor accommodation. Eventually, Black Beauty became very ill from all this hard work, and had treatment. His owner wanted to have him killed when he could no longer do the job. Luckily, a vet convinced Skinner to allow Black Beauty to rest and recover, and then sell him, so that he would make a bigger profit. The owner agreed to have the horse's life spared, but only for the sake of money.
After spending years on London's streets, Black Beauty's next home was a pleasant farm, with a caring master. After nursing him back to good health, the farmer decided that Black Beauty needed to live in a place more appropriate than a farm. He sold Black Beauty to two kind young sisters, who lived on a pleasant country estate with a large, green meadow. Here the weary but content horse finally found the rest and peace of mind that he so desired and deserved.
93. According to the passage, what can be learned about Black Beauty?
A. He was taken away from his mother after birth.
B. He was suspicious of men because of his childhood.
C. He worked as a cab horse for some time.
D. He finally found his home on a farm.
94. What can be inferred from the sentence “in Black Beauty's case, this often proved to be harmful” (in paragraph 4)?
A. Black Beauty's life wasn't as terrible as expected.
B. Black Beauty's experience did much harm to him.
C. Black Beauty's groom didn't treat him very well.
D. Black Beauty's owner pretended to be kind to him.
95. Which of the following might be the best heading of paragraph 6?
A. Time to take it easy. B. A fatal accident.
C. Hard but satisfying work. D. A cruel and greedy owner.
96. The passage is most probably ______.
A. a summary of a book B. a promotion of a writer
C. an introduction to a famous horse D. an explanation of reasons for animal protection
Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
(D)
A. There are considerations beyond the physical.
B. But in some ways, women are potentially better suited for space travel than men.
C. Women suffer less from some of the same problematic physical effects of spaceflight.
D. Women are born with those social skills, so they are more likely to get along well on long-duration space missions.
E. It just means that the traits crucial for success on missions such as these have been more typically associated with women.
F. But if you're aiming for Mars, the contrast between sending enough food for a large man versus a small woman could end up being striking.
If you're packing for an interplanetary space mission—one that's very long and might involve populating a faraway world—sending an all-female astronaut crew could be an intelligent choice.
Before you raise an eyebrow at the prospect, remember that NASA recruited and flew only all-male crews for decades. In fact, in the 58 years that Earthlings have launched humans into orbit, about 11 percent of them—63 individuals—have been women.
“An all-female mission tends to be something that NASA has avoided in assignments because it seems like a mission impossible,” says Margaret Weitkamp, a curator (馆长) at the National Air and Space Museum. ______97______
First, the weight advantage. Sending lighter humans into space is smart because rocketing weight into space requires fuel, which costs money. “Some of us have speculated for years that having an all-female crew—or at least a crew of smaller individuals—would be advantageous from the total-mission-weight standpoint,” says Wayne Hale, former NASA engineer and space shuttle program manager.
Lower body weights are just a small part of it. The rest of the difference comes from the amount of food, oxygen, and other resources needed to keep smaller humans alive. For a short-duration trip, the difference might be insignificant. ______98______ On average, men require 15 to 25 percent more calories a day than women. On top of that, smaller people produce less waste, which translates to lower demands on spacecraft systems designed to recycle and remove that junk.
______99______ Scientists observed teams that experienced stressful situations on Earth including desert survival treks, polar expeditions, and Antarctic winter-overs. They found that men tend to excel in shorter-term, goal-oriented situations, while women are better in longer-term, habitation-type circumstances.
“People in habitation situations have to be more interpersonally sensitive. You have to notice and be more communicative,” says Sheryl Bishop, a psychologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch. “______100______”
Does this mean that there's no reason to send men on these missions? Not quite. Data suggest that mixed-gender teams are the most successful overall. Then the question is: When will we get to the point where enough women are being included in spacecraft missions? Perhaps when everyone who's qualified has an equal shot at a seat.
