Remarkable memoirs by remarkable women
How (Not) To Be Strong by Alex Scott
Offering the perfect balance of stories about being a female football player alongside the traumas (创伤) of growing up with an alcoholic and abusive father, Scott shows what it takes to let go of guilt and succeed when you feel the whole world is against you. At the same time, she celebrates the feeling of being “weak” and “exposed” because it’s those moments that fuel our strengths.
Becoming by Michelle Obama
It’s rare to come across people who have not read the former first lady of the United States’ first memoir. Although parts of her story are far from anything we would experience — enter the Secret Service, others are about learning lessons we can appreciate, such as finding work-life balance, accepting societal flaws (缺陷) and taking control of your emotions to recognize self-worth.
Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah
Lesser known than others on this list, Adeline Yen Mah has quite a story to share. “... As for Father, he doesn’t even remember my name. In his mind, I’m nothing. Less than nothing. A piece of garbage to be thrown out...”
This is a moving retelling of a girl who longs to be loved and understood, but when failing to secure this in her home, she finds her purpose with the outside world.
Eat, Pray, Love by Elisabeth Gilbert
Eat, Pray, Love — three wonderful words that have changed the lives of many. Perhaps you’ve heard about the screen adaptation featuring Julia Roberts, but the memoir itself is even more special. It celebrates a woman trying to heal (治愈) herself from a severe emotional and spiritual crisis by traveling. It remains just as relevant and relatable as when it came out years ago.

A. Alex Scott. B. Michelle Obama.
C. Adeline Yen Mah. D. Elisabeth Gilbert.
2. Which memoir has a celebrated screen adaptation?

D. How (Not) To Be Strong.
3. What do the four memoirs have in common?

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Margaret Ellis, a 72-year-old retired teacher, pushes her old blue wagon (小推车) through her town. For seven years, she has been running a free mobile library for children, especially those from low-income families. It all started in 2018 when she noticed fewer children visiting the public library. She realized that busy parents and the end of a library program created a barrier. Therefore, she filled her wagon with books from her own shelves and started a reading corner on the lawn of an apartment complex. To her surprise, a dozen children came that first day.
Word of her effort spread quickly. Margaret didn’t just stop at one location; she expanded her route. She also introduced creative ideas like a “book buddy” system where older children read with younger ones. When the weather turned cold, a local church offered its space for her storytelling nights. The community began to chip in, with volunteers and book donations steadily increasing.
The impact was significant. Teachers noticed that children involved in Margaret’s program showed noticeable improvement in their reading skills. More importantly, a love for reading began to take root. Parents, inspired by Margaret, started reading with their children at home. A young regular named Max expressed a common feeling, “She makes books feel like treasure.” Margaret’s small act of kindness had started something much larger.
Now, Margaret has no plans to stop. “A library isn’t just walls and shelves,” she says. “It’s people sharing stories.” In a town with limited resources, her little blue wagon has become a powerful symbol. It proves that one person’s dedication can indeed make a significant difference, turning a simple idea into a community-wide revolution of kindness and learning.
4. What initially caused Margaret to start her mobile library?
A. She had too many books in her own shelves.
B. She wanted to become famous in her community.
C. The public library asked her to run a new program.
D. She witnessed a lack of access to books for local children.
5. What does the underlined phrase “chip in” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Feel astonished.
B. Offer financial help.
C. Commit a mistake.
D. Interrupt a conversation.
6. What can we learn about the children involved in Margaret’s program?
A. They turned a deaf ear to reading.
B. They got higher scores.
C. They overlooked the value of reading.
D. They had an appetite for reading.
7. What is the main message of the story?
A. Reading is the only way to succeed in life.
B. Retired people should find a hobby to stay busy.
C. Individual initiative can inspire positive community change.
D. Community programs are always funded by the library.

In the historic area of Xunxian county in Hebi, Henan province, bright lights and the sound of drums filled the air. An exciting live show marked the opening ceremony of the 2025 Li-Ning Cup National Pickleball Championships. Held at the end of September, the event reflected pickleball’s rising popularity in China, with the number of players growing across the country.
Invented in 1965 in the US, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s a paddle (球拍) game played on a badminton-sized court with a plastic ball hit over a low net. In China, pickleball’s history is short. It was only in 2024 that the Chinese Tennis Association officially launched a national pickleball competition system. Just one year later, the sport has already found a bigger stage. The four-day national championships in Hebi featured both team and individual events, drawing 311 athletes from 25 teams across the country.
One such athlete is Liu Miao, a physical education teacher who started playing the sport in 2023. In his view, pickleball has a low barrier to entry — it’s easy to learn and not very physically demanding. For example, a pickleball travels more slowly than a tennis ball. Its net is lower than a badminton net, which reduces stress on the neck and shoulders. As the sport continues to spread in China, its beginner-friendly nature is winning fans of all ages. The Beijing team that Liu belongs to has players as young as 22 and as old as 50.
Besides being easy to learn, pickleball also has a strong social side, bringing together people who share a love of sports. “The court isn’t large, just the right size for comfortable conversations; the pace isn’t fast, allowing you to chat while swinging your paddle,” Sanlian Lifeweek magazine noted.
Currently the number of pickleball participants in China is estimated at between one and two million. Song Hongfei, secretary-general of the China Pickleball Circuit, recalled how marathons experienced a huge boom in China over a decade ago and expressed hope that pickleball could follow suit. “As the sport develops, a large number of institutions and companies will get involved — from building venues and producing equipment and clothes to offering training courses and hosting tournaments,” Song told China Daily.
8. What’s the function of paragraph 1?
A. To detail an event scene. B. To introduce a rising trend.
C. To popularize a sport. D. To demonstrate an experiment.
9. Which words can be used to describe pickleball?
A. Well-received and inclusive. B. Simple but inconvenient.
C. Cheap but complex. D. Traditional and intense.
10. Why is pickleball considered social?
A. It’s easy to learn. B. It is friendly to beginners.
C. It glues like-minded people. D. It puts less pressure on the body.
11 What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Pickleball: a revived game B. Pickleball: a competitive device
C. Pickleball: a traditional sport D. Pickleball: a brand-new craze
D
A recent review of numerous studies shows that childhood exposure to chemicals in common plastic household items poses significant and lasting health risks, extending well into adulthood. Published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, the findings highlight particular concern for three classes of chemicals: phthalates (making plastic flexible), bisphenols (providing rigidity) and PFAS (resisting heat and water).
The research, which analyzed data from thousands of pregnant mothers and children, links these chemicals to a range of long-term health issues. Experts explain that these substances can disturb hormone function and lead to body-wide inflammation (发炎). Furthermore, early-life exposure is associated with problems like autism and ADHD, as well as IQ loss.
These chemicals are widespread, found in food packaging, cosmetics and even paper receipts. As plastics are used, heated, or washed, microplastic and nanoparticles are released and get absorbed.
The review also suggests practical solutions. Parents can reduce exposure by switching to glass or stainless-steel containers and avoiding microwaving or dishwashing plastic. Healthcare providers are encouraged to guide families toward safer choices.
At a policy level, researchers call for stricter regulations, especially for non-essential plastics. This urgency is supported by the ongoing negotiations for the UN Global Plastics Treaty, which aims to establish legally binding (有约束力的) limits on plastic production. According to Trasande, the findings in the article support the urgent need for a strong agreement to help protect not only the environment but human health as well. He notes that while the economic value of the plastics industry is commonly raised as a barrier to carrying out regulations, the resulting health care costs from exposure are enormous, with his research estimates reaching roughly $250 billion per year in the United States alone.
However, the researchers clarify that their findings do not challenge the essential, life-saving uses of plastic in medical settings. The concern lies primarily with unnecessary use outside of healthcare.
12. What’s the effect of childhood exposure to plastic chemicals?
A. It doesn’t impact hormone function. B. It leads to temporary health issues.
C. It results in lasting mental problems. D. It causes health problems lasting into adulthood.
13. Why are glass or stainless-steel containers recommended?
A. To reduce harmful chemical intake. B. To lower personal healthcare cost.
C. To follow international regulations. D. To enhance food flavor and quality.
14. What can be inferred about the solutions to plastic chemical exposure?
A. Stricter regulations on plastic uses play a vital role.
B. Both individual actions and policy changes are needed.
C. Parents bear the primary responsibility for protection.
D. Medical professionals should lead the public education.
15. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To call for a total ban on plastic production.
B. To stress the essential role of plastics in medicine.
C. To reveal risks of plastic exposure and urge actions.
D. To assess the economic cost of plastic-related diseases.

Zhang Yue, an overseas graduate, never imagined she would end up here, in the Rose Valley of her hometown, Pingyin, Shandong. Studying in Paris had exposed her to the crowded city, yet a quiet emptiness always lingered within. It was during a summer visit back to her parents that the realization struck. As the car wound into the valley at dawn, where wild roses bloomed in mist-covered fields across the countryside, she suddenly understood the most precious opportunity had always been planted in her native soil.
Upon finishing her further education, Zhang Yue made a decision that surprised everyone: to return home and start a business, transforming these wild roses into raw materials for high-end cosmetics. There was only one word that could be used to describe the early days of her career — loneliness. The villagers’ quiet yet doubtful looks seemed to ask, “What can such a young girl with little knowledge about rose-planting harvest?” At the very beginning, there were no more than ten flower pickers. But this lonely feeling was nothing compared to the real problems with the land. The first group of roses she planted died under an unexpected frost, a cold reminder that textbook knowledge seemed weak when nature changed suddenly. Unknown insects ate the tiny buds, and getting the soil just right for growing became her nightly puzzle. Each dawn felt less like a fresh start and more like a battle she was unequipped to fight. Despite all of the difficulties, she was determined not only to prove herself but to breathe new life into this land.
The turning point occurred after a television appearance. Facing four potential investors, Zhang Yue felt sweat tracing down her back, her hands trembling slightly behind her. Yet she held her ground and finished her speech. She remembered clearly her closing words: “And that is why I need your help to make this new dream take root.” The moment applause erupted, she saw a golden-haired woman nod gently.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

The Little Prince, written by a Frenchman, has been popular globally.
It tells a story that a pilot crashing in the desert becomes friends with the little prince from another planet. It talks about the importance of looking beneath the surface of things. Although simple, it makes me think a lot. The line “It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important.” impresses me most because it shows how we form special bonds with others by caring and taking responsibility for them.
Personally, I think everyone should read it, whatever their age.

【答案】Now, at five in the morning, the Rose Valley is alive with activity. Zhang Yue walks carefully between rows as hundreds of villagers skillfully pick the dew-kissed blooms. Those who once doubted her have become her most capable partners. In the morning light, she bends to touch a bud, a dewdrop rolling onto her finger — the hope not just for the very young girl but for the whole valley. Standing on the ridge overlooking the sea of red roses, she is reminded of the proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Now, she is nurturing the entire village in return with this blossoming industry.
Reflecting on her journey, Zhang Yue has found her own way to connect with the world. After noticing how curious foreign clients were about local legends, she began adding small cultural touches to her products, such as a bit of calligraphy on the packaging, a traditional flower pattern inside the lid, or a brief introduction of Pingyin printed on the box. To her surprise, these details became a big selling point. Orders from all over the world flooded in. Now, when her roses are on board, they carry more than just fragrance — they carry a piece of Chinese tradition, quietly connecting her small valley to the wider world.
