They can pick up and carry heavy things with their trunks. Elephants are like us in some ways. They are very playful and love to play in the water. They are great swimmers. They are also clever. For example, they can remember one another and places with food and water after many years. Elephants are very kind too. They look after other elephants when they don’t feel well. The big elephants also help the baby ones. Elephants are an important part of Thai life and culture. However, they are in danger. They live in forests, but people cut down too many trees. For several days, the water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell. There were deep cracks that appeared in the well walls. At least one well had some smelly gas coming out of it. Chickens and even pigs were too nervous to eat, and dogs refused to go inside buildings. Mice ran out of the fields looking for places to hide, and fish jumped out of the water. At about 3:00 a. m. , on 28 July 1976, bright lights were seen in the sky outside the city of Tangshan and loud noises were heard. But the city’s one million people were asleep as usual that night. At 3:42 a. m. , everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world were coming to an end! Eleven kilometres directly below the city, one of the most deadly earthquakes of the 20th century had begun, a quake that even caused damage more than 150 kilometres away in Beijing. Nearly one third of the whole nation felt it! A huge crack, eight kilometres long and 30 metres wide, cut across houses, roads, and waterways. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In less than one minute,a large city lay in ruins. Two thirds of the people who lived there were dead or injured. Thousands of children were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or badly injured in the quake was more than 400,000. Everywhere survivors looked, there was nothing but ruins. Nearly everything in the city was destroyed. About 75 percent of the city’s factories and buildings,90 percent of its homes, and all of its hospitals were gone. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves, but no wind could blow them away. Most bridges had fallen or were not safe to cross. The railway tracks were now useless pieces of metal. Tens of thousands of cows, hundreds of thousands of pigs, and millions of chickens were dead. Sand now filled the wells instead of water. People were in shock—and then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan again. Even more buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard to get. People began to wonder how long the disaster would last. But hope was not lost. Soon after the quakes, the army sent 150,000 soldiers to Tangshan to dig out those who were trapped and to bury the dead. More than 10,000 doctors and nurses came to provide medical care. Workers built shelters for survivors whose homes had been destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people were helped. Water and food were brought into the city by train, truck, and plane. Slowly, the city began to breathe again. Tangshan started to revive itself and get back up on its feet. With strong support from the government and the tireless efforts of the city’s people, a new Tangshan was built upon the earthquake ruins. The new city has become a home to more than seven million people, with great improvements in transportation, industry, and environment. Tangshan city has proved to China and the rest of the world that in times of disaster, people must unify and show the wisdom to stay positive and rebuild for a brighter future. 8. What were some of the strange natural signs before the earthquake? A. Loud noises were never heard continuously for days. B. Well water rose and fell, and animals behaved unusually. C. Bright lights appeared only at midnight. D. The ground cracked open in the city center. 9. According to the passage, which of the following statements about the earthquake is TRUE? A. It only affected the area within 11 kilometres of Tangshan. B. It was felt by about one-third of China’s population. C. It occurred at 3:00 a. m. on 28 July 1976. D. No aftershock followed the main quake. 10. What does the sentence “Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves, but no wind could blow them away” imply? A. The weather was calm after the earthquake. B. The bricks were neatly arranged by survivors. C. The destruction was widespread and unnatural. D. Autumn had arrived early in Tangshan that year. 11. How did Tangshan recover after the disaster? A. It was completely abandoned and rebuilt in a new location. B International aid alone helped the city revive quickly. C. With government support and people’s efforts, a new city was built. D. Most survivors moved to Beijing and other major cities. D Economic development is necessary if we want to improve society. There comes a time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible to preserve everything from our past. Finding and keeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge. Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959. A committee was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments and raised funds within the international community. Experts investigated the issue, considered several tests, and then made a proposal for how the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960. The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from the water. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and countless cultural relics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project. When the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not only had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow. The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. The best example is shown by UNESCO, which runs a programme that prevents world cultural heritage sites around the world from disappearing. If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution. 12. Why did the Egyptian government decide to build a new dam across the Nile in the 1950s? A. To attract more tourists. B. To control floods, produce electricity, and provide water to farmers. C. To replace old temples with modern buildings. D. To show the power of the Egyptian government. 13. What was the main problem with building the dam? A. It would be too expensive for the government to afford. B. It would take too long to complete. C. It would damage many temples and cultural relics. D. It would not provide enough electricity. 14. How did the experts save the temples from the water? A. They built walls around the temples to keep the water out. B. They collected money to repair the temples after the dam was built. C. They asked the government to stop building the dam. D. They moved the temples to a safer place piece by piece. 15. What does the story of the Aswan Dam project tell us? A. Old things should always be replaced by new ones. B It is possible for countries to work together to solve difficult problems. C. Building dams is always harmful to cultural heritage. D. Only the United Nations can protect cultural sites. 第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways. ___16___ Second, your notes are excellent materials to refer to when you are studying for a test. Lily, without hesitation, decided to assist her. After school, they made their way to the library. Lily started by carefully going over the basic math concepts that Maya was struggling with. She used real - life examples like sharing candies among friends to make the concepts easier to grasp. As they worked through different problems, Maya’s frown gradually turned into a look of concentration. Lily encouraged her at every step, saying, “You’re getting it, Maya! Keep going.” Slowly but surely, Maya began to show improvement and her confidence started to return. On the last day of second grade, Lily’s class had a special celebration. Mrs. Johnson began to review each student’s progress throughout the year. When she reached Maya, she said, “Maya has made remarkable progress in math this year. It’s been a joy to watch her grow.” Maya blushed with pride as she stood up. She looked at Lily, her eyes filled with gratitude. “I couldn’t have done it without Lily’s help,” Maya said to the class. Lily felt a warm glow inside, happy to see her friend’s success. Their friendship, forged through this shared experience, had become even deeper. They knew they would always be there for each other in the future. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
