It is often said that the high school period is one of the most important stages that an individual will experience, and is often seen as a critical and life-shaping time. During this period, people often begin to discover what is meaningful to them and how they plan to continue living their life. Volunteering at St. Clare's Hospital has helped me form a positive experience during my high school years.
When I first began volunteering, I was very nervous about meeting new people and being pushed outside of my comfort zone. At the beginning of my volunteering experience I was rather timid and not very outgoing. Fortunately, as time went by, I discovered how to introduce myself to new volunteers, to go out of my way to make patients feel welcome, and to extend the hand of friendship to others. I learned to respect diversity, which turned out to be particularly helpful in the real world.
My volunteering experience at the hospital has led me to believe that my love and sympathy for the disabled can brighten up the day of those lonely patients. There is another valuable lesson I have learned from the volunteer program: The significance of “service” involves making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the harmony of the community. Now I feel content each time I finish my shift. This positive feeling has motivated me to continue carrying on this worthwhile cause, and has become something that I view as having irreplaceable importance to my life.
It's a great pity that many teenagers in my generation have not had experiences similar to mine and therefore missed out on some of the important lessons that can be learned in life. Knowing that I made a positive impact on someone is an emotionally uplifting experience that can never be matched by money or fame. And, to the best of my ability, I will follow this path of service throughout my life.

A. Confident. B. Shy. C. Brave. D. Calm.
27. What is the purpose of the text?

B. To share the author's volunteering experience.
C. To explain the benefits of volunteering.
D. To introduce suitable community work.

The Wandering Earth Il(流浪地球2),a science-fiction movie, has aroused hot debate among galaxy scientists and science-fiction writers, both in China and overseas. Among them, John Gribbin, a UK science writer, speaks highly of rising science education in China and says that that's what makes science fiction successful.
"It is very important in this technological age for people to understand the fundamentals of science, and then popular science writing can inform them of the world around them," he says. “This is a bit like music. Even if you are not a great musician, if you know a little bit, you gain a deeper appreciation of great music." Zhou Binghong, a researcher at the China Academy of Space Technology, holds a similar view. “The more scientific knowledge one gains, the more questions he or she will have about how the world runs. This leaves them wanting to know more, especially youngsters."
Both episodes of The Wandering Earth include quite a few imaginary technologies that need basic scientific knowledge to understand. In the latest one, for example, what arouses most fierce discussions among the public is a “space elevator” that enables astronauts to complete their trips to space by taking an elevator instead of a rocket. On various platforms, there are discussions about whether such an elevator is possible. If it were possible, what materials would be used?
For Zhou, such discussions themselves mean the public has a taste for science. He says, “Interest marks the first step toward creativity. Who knows who will emerge as an engineer of such an elevator in 50 years’ time?"
Impressed by the process of science-related industries in China, Gribbin says that “it is going from strength to strength" and that “China is one of the leading countries for scientific research and technological development, and that the Chinese people are naturally interested in the developments.”
28. What leads to the popularity of science fiction according to Paragraph 1?
A. The charm of science. B. The attraction of literature.
C. The popularity of the film D. The development of science education.
29. Why does the author mention the music in Paragraph 2?
A. To stress music is necessary in science.
B. To tell readers why music appreciation is important.
C. To show the relationship between music and science.
D. To indicate the importance of learning scientific knowledge.
30. Which is the function of the “space elevator” in The Wandering Earth II?
A. It helps control the rocket. B. It sends astronauts into space.
C. It enables astronauts to walk in space. D. It maintains astronauts' safety in space.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for this text?
A. Putting Science into Fiction B. Fiction Gaining in Popularity
C. Science Planting Seeds of Hope D. A Leading Country for Scientific Research

Even before Molly Johnson-Jones graduated from Oxford University in 2015, she felt professional
pressure to land a “ prestigious(享有声望的)” job in a high-powered industry. She says she and her university friends felt there were professions that carried prestige particularly the fields of finance, medicine and law. That's why Johnson-Jones ended up in investment banking for two years once she graduated, even though it didn't feel like quite the right fit.
These kinds of "very traditional industries" have indeed carried prestige, says Jonah Stillman, cofounder of Gen Guru, a firm that focuses on different generations in the workplace. As Gen Z join the workforce, however, experts and younger workers say what's considered a "prestigious" job may be expanding. Some younger workers do still report making money is prestigious, especially as the cost of living shoots up; and working for certain firms or in specific industries can make a career. But many also place equal stress on other elements, such as values of the company, flexibility, and freedom from long, intense work hours.
And some data indicates that Gen Z are indeed turning to more meaningful work. April 2023 data from LinkedIn of more than 7,000 global workers shows 64% of Gen Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland now consider it important to work for companies that share their values. The data also shows these young workers highlight the work-life balance and career growth as top draws in potential workplaces.
This change in Gen Z's attitude towards work may be in part because mechanisms(机制)behind finding jobs and seeing other possible career paths are changing, says Josh Graff, managing director of EMEA and LATAM at LinkedIn. "With a greater number of jobs being posted online, people have so much more access to information today than we did when we were applying for a job 20 plus years ago. This allows you to have much better visibility into a wealth of roles, ," he says. "That is leading people to understand there's a wider range of options out there."
32. Why did Johnson-Jones end up in investment banking?
A. She had a passion for finance.
B. She wanted to make a lot of money.
C. She found herself well suited for the career.
D. She felt pressure to take up a highly-regarded job.
33. What is the main point of paragraph 2?
A. Making money is still the main concern of younger workers.
B. Gen Zers are not interested in prestigious traditional jobs.
C. The definition of a prestigious job is changing for younger workers.
D. Short-time work is still considered prestigious for younger workers.
34. What do most Gen Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland consider important when it comes to work?
A. Whether they can have a good job title.
B. Whether they can receive a good salary.
C. Whether companies' values are in line with theirs.
D. Whether they have enough opportunities to socialize.
35. What can be contributing to the change in Gen Z's attitude towards work?
A. The changing job search methods.
B. A lack of high-paying jobs in traditional industries.
C. The growing stress on companies' social responsibility.
D. Increased access to information about potential career paths.

After an exhausting day, Jack wandered in the street, smiling while thinking of his students. Jack was a considerate and respectable teacher and his students took good care of him, too.
Suddenly, a familiar figure flashed into Jack's eyes. It was Mark, his junior high school teacher. With a thrill. Jack dashed forward, greeted him enthusiastically, and said, “Mark, how are you?” Taking off his presbyopic glasses (老花镜),Mark studied the passionate young man in front of him, hesitated for a moment and got confused, “Sorry? Have we met before?"
Not disappointed at all, Jack introduced himself in delight, “Sorry, Mark. I'm Jack Smith, from Class 2, Grade 8, graduating from Kevin Junior High School in 2001.Now I'm a teacher." Hearing the words, Mark was puzzled but also delighted, asking a series of questions. “W hy can't I remember you? Are you a teacher now?" In spite of poor eyesight, Mark did have such a brilliant memory that he could even remember almost all his students.
“Well, in fact, you were in charge of our class for only one day, and something happened that day. I became a teacher because of your inspiration."
Old Mark, curious, kept raising questions such as when they met, and how he had inspired him to be a teacher.
“One day, a friend of mine came in with a nice new watch. I was so crazy about it that I decided to take it and I did. After a short while, my friend found it had disappeared and immediately reported it to the teacher, you, who happened to be in charge of our class that day because our teacher was ill.”
A mixture of emotions floated into Jack's eyes when he recalled the shameful history. That day, Mark came and told the whole class that someone in the class could not find his watch and required that whoever took it return it quickly. Jack was too frightened to hand it in.
Then, Mark closed the door and told all students to get up
But Mark kept searching other students’pockets.
