Best Places to Visit in Winter
Rovaniemi, Finland
If you love ice and snow, then you’ll love exploring Rovaniemi. Why? Simply because it’s one of the top winter destinations in Europe. Sitting in northern Finland, Rovaniemi is the entrance to Finland’s famous Lapland — the home of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi is the perfect place to watch the impressive Northern lights, go on a dog ride, or even visit an ice hotel.
St. Kitts & Nevis, Caribbean
If you’re looking to escape the rain, snow, and grey skies, then St. Kitts and Nevis is one of the top places to go in the winter. This nation sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It has perfect weather all year round, with temperatures of 25℃ in winter. Apart from lying on the beaches, you can also enjoy the Carnival around Christmas, boating and swimming tours, and historical tours of the islands.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is one of South Africa’s most attractive destinations, with lots of exciting things to do. From visiting the 7th Wonder of Nature, Table Mountain, to surfing the waves of the city’s amazing beaches, there’s something for everyone. Cape Town is only a short drive away from the famous Cape Winelands, where you can take tours of local wine (葡萄酒) farms with wine tasting and food pairings.
Lanzarote, Spain
With interesting rock formations, volcanoes, and amazing blue waters, Lanzarote is a top choice for many travelers running away from cold European winters. Lanzarote is the most eastern of the Canary Islands. Expect to find black and red earth, white and golden sand beaches and hilly mountains. The average weather stays around the 20℃ mark, so you can get a nice sunbath without worrying too much about sunburn.

Decades ago, my friend Caetlin received a special task from the poet Robert L. Hass, who was then her literature teacher. He instructed each student to memorize three poems — not for any immediate exam reason, but instead to prepare them for their unavoidable future moments of being alone. At some point, Caetlin remembers him saying, you’ re going to do alone, and poetry is going to be all you have.
If the task was a strange one, it’s because the act of memorizing a poem feels old-fashioned in a time when few of us come across poetry at all. When I was in graduate school, I mostly limited myself to prose (散文). It was only in my 40s that I began to change my ways.
It happened in a flight to Seattle. For hours, I read nothing else but a poem. Sometimes I went through the whole poem at once, and sometimes I repeated a single stanza (诗节) over and over, and by the time my plane landed on the West Coast, I had the whole thing, all 40 lines of it, in my head. Because the process is as simple as it is very boring, memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime (罪行). The boredom of repetition reduces the great attraction it has. But as you run your hands through the rock, the lines at last come together again, and the disconnected text changes back into a treasure, often a more valuable one than it was before.
In other words, poetry survives continuously by becoming a part of those who read it. It can do so only because it is so specific, so completely different from us, that taking it in expands our own sense of what we are.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are no longer fresh in my mind, and that’s fine. I know that if I spend a little time with them, they’ll sing in me again. I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become.
4. What did Robert L. Hass suggest students do?
A. Write their own poetry. B. Study poetry for exams.
C. Read more classical works. D. Memorize poems for future loneliness.
5. Why does the author say that memorizing a poem begins as a crime?
A. It’s out of date to memorize poems.
B. Repeating lines wastes a lot of time.
C. Repetition takes away the poem’s beauty.
D. Reading poetry on planes is embarrassing.
6. How does understanding poetry influence us?
A. By reminding us of our good memories. B. By deepening self-understanding.
C. By reminding us to forget the past. D. By enabling us to survive the hard life.
7. What is the author’s attitude towards memorizing poetry in the last paragraph?
A. Doubtful. B. Appreciative. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned
D 5. C 6. B 7. B
根据第一段内容“He instructed each student to memorize three poems — not for any immediate exam reason, but instead to prepare them for their unavoidable future moments of being alone. (他要求每个学生背诵三首诗——不是为了应付眼前的考试,而是为了让他们为未来不可避免的独处时刻做好准备。)”可知,Robert L. Hass建议学生背诵诗歌,是为了应对未来的独处时光。故选D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段内容“Because the process is as simple as it is very boring, memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime (罪行). The boredom of repetition reduces the great attraction it has. (因为这个过程既简单又非常枯燥,背诵一首好诗一开始总像是一种罪过。重复的枯燥会削弱它所拥有的巨大吸引力。)”可知,作者说背诵诗歌一开始像一种罪过,是因为反复的背诵会让诗歌原本的美感和吸引力消失。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段内容“It can do so only because it is so specific, so completely different from us, that taking it in expands our own sense of what we are. (它之所以能做到这一点,只是因为它非常独特,与我们截然不同,接受它能拓宽我们对自我的认知。)”可知,理解诗歌能让我们拓宽对自身的认知,也就是深化自我理解。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段内容“I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become. (我不会向你保证背诵诗歌会让你的生活变得更好,但它会让你变得更丰富:更贴近语言,更贴近他人的思想,或许还能更贴近你未来可能成为的样子。)”可知,作者认为背诵诗歌能让人变得更丰富,带来诸多积极的收获,由此可判断作者对背诵诗歌持欣赏、赞许的态度。故选B。

Goldfish have long been a beloved family pet. However, there is a growing problem associated with these popular fish. Goldfish are taking over rivers in many towns where well-meaning people have “freed” their fish into the wild.
Such is the case in West Medical Lake of Washington. Goldfish can grow very large. As a result, their population grew quite fast, and they quickly destroyed (毁坏) all the food sources that the rest of the fish depend upon in the lake.
Sadly, setting free goldfish is very common. One survey of people in Texas found that anywhere from 20 to 70 percent of fish owners put their fish into bodies of water.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife said that it can cost up to $150,000 to take away the foreign species (物种) from the lake. It’s such a serious problem that fish and wildlife officials said they are considering making setting goldfish free into the wild a crime (犯罪), and prosecuting (起诉) those responsible.
“If they get caught doing that and get prosecuted, they could have to pay for fixing the problem they created,” said Randy Osborne, a fisheries biologist for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
So what should you do if you no longer want to care for your pet fish? Well, if you can’t find a willing friend or family member to help care for them, contact your local pet shop or animal shelter (避难所). Many shelters do not just find homes for cats and dogs, but also birds, rabbits and fish. You might also join a goldfish club in your town or on Facebook, and then reach out to people to try and find someone who can take care of your pet.
And, if your fish are ill, do not put these ill fish into the wild or flush (冲走) them down your toilet. “A sick fish can introduce harmful things like the disease it had into the water,” wrote PetHelpful, a website sharing knowledge on pets. “Keeping our waterways clean and safe is important for future generations.”
8. What do the underlined words “associated with” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Suitable for. B. Compared with.
C. Responsible for. D. Connected with.
9. What was one result of putting goldfish into West Medical Lake?
A. They caused the lake to get dirtier.
B. There were fewer other fish in the lake.
C. They attracted other species to the lake.
D. Much money was wasted on saving them.
10. What action may be taken to stop people freeing goldfish into the wild?
A. Punishing those who do it. B. Praising people who do it.
C. Raising money to save freed goldfish. D. Advising people to buy fewer goldfish.
11. What is paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. The types of unwanted pet fish.
B. Where unwanted pet fish have gone.
C. How to deal with unwanted pet fish.
D. The importance of saving unwanted pet fish.
D 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据第一段“However, there is a growing problem associated with these popular fish. Goldfish are taking over rivers in many towns where well-meaning people have “freed” their fish into the wild. (然而,存在一个日益严重的问题associated with这种受欢迎的鱼。在许多城镇,好心人将金鱼“放生”到野外,导致金鱼在河流中泛滥成灾)”可知,这里指“growing problem”与“金鱼被放生后泛滥”存在关联,因此“associated with”意为“与……相关联”,与“Connected with”表意一致。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Goldfish can grow very large. As a result, their population grew quite fast, and they quickly destroyed (毁坏) all the food sources that the rest of the fish depend upon in the lake.(金鱼可以长得很大。结果,它们的数量增长得非常快,并且很快耗尽了湖中其他鱼类赖以生存的所有食物来源)”可知,金鱼耗尽其他鱼类的食物。由此推知,其他鱼类会因缺乏食物而数量减少。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“It’s such a serious problem that fish and wildlife officials said they are considering making setting goldfish free into the wild a crime (犯罪), and prosecuting (起诉) those responsible.(这个问题如此严重,以至于鱼类和野生动物官员表示,他们正在考虑将放生金鱼到野外定为犯罪,并起诉相关责任人)”可知,为阻止放生行为,可能会采取惩罚相关人员的措施。故选A项。
根据第六段“So what should you do if you no longer want to care for your pet fish? Well, if you can’t find a willing friend or family member to help care for them, contact your local pet shop or animal shelter (避难所). (如果你不再想照顾你的宠物鱼,该怎么办?好吧,如果你找不到愿意帮忙照顾它们的朋友或家人,可以联系当地的宠物店或动物收容所)”以及下文可知,该段核心是介绍处理不想要的宠物鱼的方法。故选C项。
D
Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare (噩梦). But it should not be exactly unable to be accepted.
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored.
Though these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undoubtedly changed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided navigation (航行). Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp loss in special memory and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort.
That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better results. Research shows that mild stress can improve adaptability. Neuroscience (神经科学) shows that neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections — is improved through challenging experiences. This adaptability is important for developing resilience (抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort.
But this doesn’t mean we should reject comfort entirely; it’s to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as “micro-dosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we’ve buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck? Choosing discomfort isn’t easy, but sometimes, it’s worth it.
12. What is the main concern raised by the author in the first two paragraphs?
A. The high cost of replacing lost smartphones.
B. The growing popularity of social media worldwide.
C. The failure of technology to provide efficient services.
D. The rise in mental problems linked to digital dependency.
13. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text?
A. The meaningful engagement. B. The fast but worthless relief.
C. The lack of necessary comfort. D. The decrease of thinking ability.
14. Which is a real-life application of “micro-dosing hardship”?
A. Ordering take- out food after work. B. Taking the stairs instead of the lift.
C. Writing an email using voice- to- text. D. Exploring a new city by using GPS.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. GPS: the unseen cost of convenience. B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage.
C. Smartphones: blocks to human progress. D. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilience.
D 13. D 14. B 15. D

根据第三段中“Though these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills.(虽然这些便利提供了短期的缓解,但它们可能会削弱我们的思维能力。)”
根据最后一段中“Think of it as “micro-dosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand.(把它看作是“微剂量的困难”——一系列小的、可管理的困难,可以保持我们的精神和情感肌肉强壮,比如用钢笔写字,或者用手洗碗。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据第四段“That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better results. Research shows that mild stress can improve adaptability. Neuroscience (神经科学) shows that neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections — is improved through challenging experiences. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Have you ever asked yourself why it is, that when the dessert (甜品) menu arrives, somehow, you always seem to have space? ___16___ The team at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing found that the same brain areas that make us feel full after a meal are also responsible for our sweet hunger later. Here are four ways to work with your body if you want to reduce the sweet tooth.
Fill up on fiber (纤维). Upping fiber in the diet can prevent blood sugar rising which drives sugar wishes. It causes changes in the stomach that directly affect the brain, making you less likely to long for sugary foods. ___17___ And leave the skins on potatoes for an immediate fiber increase.
Add healthy fats and protein (蛋白质) in your meal. They make you feel more satisfied and less likely to reach for something sweet after a meal. Healthy fats, in the form of full-fat milk, and protein in eggs, fish and beans, are important in determining how satisfied you feel. ___18___
Try eating mindfully. The thirst for sweet food comes from the need to be comforted, particularly when we are stressed. We often eat desserts because we ignore our body’s feelings of hunger. So before reaching for that biscuit, ask yourself these questions: ___19___ Am I just bored or in need of a break?
___20___ If you are going to eat dessert, choose smaller parts and find a comfort place in which you eat them. Use a plate, sit down and enjoy your desserts. You can make more healthy sweet treats too. Have a square of dark chocolate with a teaspoon of sugar to satisfy your sweet tooth in a more lasting way.
A. Focus on what you eat.
B. Am I eager for a bar of chocolate?
C. So try to include them in every meal.
D. Can I hold this out until the next meal?
E. Well, researchers might have the answer.
F. Enjoy the dessert if you’ re going to have it.
G. Turn to bread, rice and noodles.
E 17. G 18. C 19. D 20. F

An endangered species is a group of animals that could soon become extinct. Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more. Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don’t do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered but most of them are due to humans.
Habitat destruction is the main reason why animals become endangered and this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals’ habitat is destroyed and there is nothing to eat because humans cut down trees and build houses and farms. Animal habitats are also destroyed because of pollution. Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms cause the destruction of habitats and animals no longer live there.
Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing. Animals are killed for their fur, bones or skin, or just for sport (消遣). Some seal species are now close to extinction because they are killed for their fur to make coats. Tigers are shot to make medicine and tea from their bones, and crocodiles are caught to make bags and shoes. Overfishing means that large sea creatures like whales, tuna and sharks have all become endangered species, because too many are caught to make things like shark’s fin soup.
So what can individuals and governments do to protect animal and plant species from becoming endangered? We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face a financial penalty (处罚). Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fish or trade in endangered species. If we all cooperate by taking these steps, we will protect our planet so that our children and their children can enjoy it too.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Many species are in danger of extinction, mainly owing to human activities. The main reason is habitat destruction caused by humans moving into new areas and pollution. Another reason is hunting and fishing for animal products, and sometimes sport. Therefore, individuals and governments should cooperate to protect habitat and ban hunting, fishing and trade.

D. Concerned
