Andrew Duhe wanted to do something special for his wife Jennifer’s 40th birthday. Jewelry or flowers wouldn’t cut it. The couple volunteer every weekend at Chesapeake Animal Services in Virginia. During one visit, Andrew hit on a perfect idea: The shelter had 40 dog cages that were always full. What if he paid the $110 adoption fees for all 40 dogs?
It would cost $4,400 to cover the cost of preparing the dogs for their new homes. But Andrew knew the gift would mean more to his wife than anything from a store. They had recently lost one of their beloved dogs, Sierra. He thought sponsoring (赞助) the adoptions would help cheer Jennifer up. “More than anything, she wants all dogs to find good homes,” said Andrew. “We’d sponsored one or two before, so why not 40?”
Jennifer’s birthday was Nov.13, but Andrew worried his surprise might be given away. So on Nov.12, he and their kids gave Jennifer an early gift: a custom mug in Sierra’s memory and a birthday card. Inside the card was a note saying he had paid the adoption fees for 40 dogs. “I just cried and cried,” Jennifer said.
Kasey Gallardo, the shelter’s manager, was stunned. “We’ve never had anyone pay for so many before,” she said. Andrew’s gift made it possible to bring more dogs from the back of the shelter. “For every dog adopted, you’re actually saving two,” Gallardo said, explaining that there wasn’t enough room for every dog.
“I was incredibly touched that Andrew did something on that large of a scale,” Jennifer said. “It’s honestly the most perfect gift I’ve ever gotten.”
4. What does the underlined phrase “wouldn’t cut it” in Paragraph 1 most likely mean?
A. Would not cost too much. B. Would not be found in stores.
C. Would not be sharp enough. D. Would not be the most suitable.
5. How did Jennifer react when she learned about Andrew’s gift?
A. She was extremely crazy. B. She was deeply touched.
C. She thought it too expensive. D. She thought it unnecessary.
6. What does Kasey’s words “saving two” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A. Each dog has a twin brother.
B. The shelter gives two dogs for free.
C. Adopting a dog costs twice as much.
D. Adoption frees shelter space for another dog.
7. What is the best title for this passage?
A. The Cost of Adopting a Pet B. A Wife’s Love for Dogs
C. A Special Birthday Present D. The Value of Being a Volunteer
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. D 7. C

【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Andrew Duhe wanted to do something special for his wife Jennifer’s 40th birthday.(安德鲁・杜赫想为妻子詹妮弗的 40 岁生日做一件特别的事。)”以及后文可知,全文围绕安德鲁为妻子准备一份特殊生日礼物展开,所以C项A Special Birthday Present(一份特别的生日礼物)符合文意。

In most countries, young people are considered to be “grown up” at the age of eighteen. At that age, they are no longer legally under their parents’ control. They can drive a car, work at a full-time job and pay their own bills. For a long time, this “magic age” meant the end of adolescence (青春期).
However, eighteen may simply mark the beginning of the next stage of growing up, which can extend into people’s late twenties or even early thirties. Sociologists call this new phase “extended adolescence,” a result of social and economic changes.
One writer has described this period more vividly and more accurately as the “Odyssey Period.” In the Greek epic (史诗) The Odyssey, the hero Odysseus spent years trying to return home after the Trojan War, facing storms, strange lands and setbacks. Similarly, young people moving toward adulthood today often face uncertainty in careers, relationships and identity. For the first time, they ask themselves what kind of person they want to become.
These journeys of self-exploration are filled with hardships yet bring lifelong gains. Through trial and error, young people learn to make better decisions and know what they truly enjoy. Uncertainty is not only a challenge but also an opportunity for growth. For example, a Chinese college graduate once worked in Xinjiang planting trees for a year. Though demanding, he regarded it as the most meaningful experience. He understood his country better and contributed to the environment. Seen in this light, the “Odyssey Period” can be one of the most rewarding periods of life.
In the end, the “Odyssey Period” is not a failure to launch, but a different kind of beginning. During this time, young people grow into an adulthood that is tested and chosen, rather than passively accepted. When they finally reach their own destination, they gain a clearer understanding of who they truly are.
8. What does the phrase “extended adolescence” refer to?
A. The hard time during the adolescence.
B. The final period of becoming an adult.
C. The period of adolescence before eighteen.
D. The prolonged growing-up stage after eighteen.
9. Why does the author mention the college graduate in Paragraph 4?
A. To illustrate the steps to start a lifelong career.
B. To prove the value of experiencing challenging years.
C. To provide the solutions to getting through hard times.
D. To stress the importance of protecting the environment.
10. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Young people reach adulthood naturally at 18.
B. Failure in early life stops people from growing.
C. Growing up early means greater life achievements.
D. The Odyssey Period helps shape true self-awareness.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Exploration in adolescence brings valuable experiences.
B. Eighteen is seen as the magic age marking full adulthood.
C. Modern youth experience a special extended growth stage.
D. Young people probably have a hopeful future after growing up.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. C

Used in fast food packaging, long-lasting chemicals called PFAS can get into food and build up in our bodies. A new study found that after 24 hours, people who ate fast food consistently showed an increase in PFAS in their blood. Unlike other pollutants (污染物), PFAS can exist for years, meaning regular fast food consumption adds more to the body.
PFAS refers to a class of chemicals used to make objects water or fire resistant. A 2017 study of 400 wrappers found that more than half of bread and dessert wrappers contained the chemical, as did nearly 40% of sandwich and burger wrappers. The chemical has such a bad fame for its inability to break down that it is often called a “forever chemical”.
“Food is just one source of exposure,” says Laurel Schadier, an environmental engineer. PFAS is also commonly found in paint, carpeting and clothing. However, she adds, “We’re not able to link a certain rate of fast food intake with harmful health effects.”
Illustrating a measurable health impact from eating five burgers with PFAS a week compared to just one is difficult because the chemicals are so common. Rolf Halden, an environmental health expert, says the study shows a clear link between fast food and PFAS consumption, but he worries more about the overall abundance of PFAS in consumer goods. “I am less interested in the aspect of popcorn and fast food but more fascinated that we see 70 percent of the U.S. population is getting exposed to chemicals that cannot degrade(分解),” he says.
In addition to unknown health consequences, Schadier notes environmental concerns when PFAS is thrown away. Tap water serving 7.5 million Californians tested positive for the pollutant. While Washington and San Francisco have limited PFAS in food containers, Denmark recently became the first country to ban it entirely from food packaging.
Of the study results, Halden adds: “It would be foolish to think what’s here is the complete exposure to PFAS. That is much larger and still growing more complex.”
12. How does fast food relate to PFAS consumption according to the study?
A. Fast food contains more PFAS than other food does.
B. It is fast food that leads to the consumption of PFAS.
C. PFAS are widely present in fast food packaging materials.
D. The more fast food we eat, the more PFAS gets in our blood.
13. What makes PFAS known as a “forever chemical”?
A. It can never break down naturally.
B. It is widely used in fast food packaging.
C. It is found in paint, carpeting and clothing.
D. It can make objects water and fire resistant.
14. Which of the following statements would Halden most likely agree with?
A. PFAS exposure is limited to the U.S. population.
B. The study’s findings fully explain all PFAS exposure risks.
C. Denmark’s ban on PFAS in food packaging is unnecessary.
D. Fast food is a minor issue compared to the widespread use of PFAS.
15. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To warn American people against eating fast food.
B. To suggest banning all chemicals from food packaging.
C. To prove that PFAS is more harmful than other pollutants.
D. To introduce a chemical called PFAS and its possible risks.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. D
根据第一段“A new study found that after 24 hours, people who ate fast food consistently showed an increase in PFAS in their blood...regular fast food consumption adds more to the body(一项新研究发现,食用快餐的人24小时后血液中的PFAS含量会持续升高……经常吃快餐会让该物质在人体内不断累积)”可知,食用快餐越多,人体内的PFAS含量就越高。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The chemical has such a bad fame for its inability to break down that it is often called a “forever chemical”(这种化学物质因无法分解而声名狼藉,常被称作“永久化学物质”)”可知,无法自然分解是PFAS被称为永久化学物质的原因。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“he worries more about the overall abundance of PFAS in consumer goods(他更担心消费品中PFAS的整体存量)”和“I am less interested in the aspect of popcorn and fast food but more fascinated that we see 70 percent of the U.S. population is getting exposed to chemicals that cannot degrade (分解)(我不太关注爆米花和快餐方面的问题,更关注的是70%的美国人都在接触这种无法分解的化学物质)”可知,在Halden看来,相较于快餐带来的影响,PFAS在各类产品中广泛传播的问题更为严峻,快餐只是次要问题。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,根据第一段“A new study found that after 24 hours, people who ate fast food consistently showed an increase in PFAS in their blood. Unlike other pollutants (污染物), PFAS can exist for years, meaning regular fast food consumption adds more to the body.(一项新研究发现,食用快餐的人24小时后血液中的PFAS含量会持续升高。与其他污染物不同,PFAS可存在多年,这意味着经常吃快餐会让该物质在人体内不断累积)”等内容可知,文章主要介绍了PFAS这种特殊化学物质的特性、使用场景、传播途径,以及它带来的人体健康和环境风险。

Learn to Love Who You Are
Learning to love yourself helps you overcome challenges.
____16____
Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. Imagine your best friend is worried or upset, then think about how you’d support them and try to make them feel better. Becky Goddard-Hill, author of Create Your Own Confidence, says self-love means valuing yourself at all times.
Why does it matter?
____17____ This makes you believe in yourself and feel that you deserve good things. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time, but when you do face challenges, they’ll be easier to overcome. Studies show that self-love can help friendships, schoolwork and health.
Positive self-talk
An “affirmation” is saying a positive statement to yourself. Goddard-Hill recommends doing this three times every morning to give yourself a boost. ____18____ Here are some ideas: “I like who I am.” “I can do this.” “I am a good friend.”
Love yourself better
Start by being kind to yourself, especially if you make a mistake. Try not to compare yourself to others and remember that no one is perfect. Focus on yourself instead. ____19____ For instance, it could be “I’m creative.” or “I care about others.” Before you go to bed, think about three things that went well for you that day. “This will help you see the positives in your life,” says Goddard-Hill.
Take time out for you
Spend 15 minutes a day giving yourself the attention you deserve. ____20____ Listening to your favorite music, going for a walk or bike ride, cuddling your pet, or reading a book in bed are all great ways to start.
A. Can you think of any more?
B. What does self-love mean?
C. Here are some simple activities you can try.

D. The Odyssey Period helps shape true self-awareness.
11. What is the main idea of the text?
