As a farmer, the land was always at the heart of Andrew Green’s life. But a momentous decision saw him stop using his ground to grow crops, and start using it for the benefit of nature and wildlife. It all started when Andrew dug out a lake to begin the process of creating a 250-acre wetland reserve.
Now Kingfishers Bridge Nature Reserve is celebrating its milestone 30th anniversary this year. Over three decades, its pioneering work has seen huge numbers of creatures and plant species flourishing (蓬勃) as never before. It is now home to more than 420 plant species. 215different birds, 740 different moths and many more species.
Andrew started farming the land with his brother and concentrated on salad crops, sugar beet and some daffodils. However, the banks of the River Cam are on a major bird migration route. That led him to expand the land he was farming into one of the UK’s first rewilding projects, before “rewilding” was even really a term.
“I realized that to make a wetland reserve, it needed plenty of water,” Andrew says. “So, I made a lake, and what followed was animals and birds used it every day.” Key to the development was the arrival of James as manager in 2011. James gradually found the right places on land and water, leading to a wonderful nature reserve which he had an extraordinary ability to manage.
They go from a winter with the highest rainfall recorded in decades straight to one of the driest summers on record. That makes it very difficult for animals and habitats that require a nice stable water level and structure to cope with such rapid changes. It means every effort has to be made to manage water for the benefit of the wildlife, and there are currently long-term plans for a big reservoir.
Happily, despite all the difficulties, there’s something to be seen year-round at the nature reserve. Along with beautiful birds and other wildlife, Kingfishers Bridge is now home to herds of water buffalo and Konik ponies which have become huge attractions for visitors.
24. What decision did Andrew make?
A. Creating a wetland park. B. Reintroducing diverse crop varieties.
C. Giving up restoring the farm. D. Returning the farmland to a natural state.
25. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To reveal the scale of the reserve. B. To showcase the success of the reserve.
C. To introduce various species of the reserve. D. To celebrate 30th anniversary of the reserve.
26. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Water challenges in the reserve. B. Efforts to manage water.
C. Rapid changes in water level. D. Plans to build a big reservoir.
27. What do we know about Andrew?
A. He finds the right places for wildlife. B. He has a great ability to purify water.
C. He creates a natural habitat for wildlife. D. He works as manager of Kingfishers Bridge.

For decades, treatment options for chronic (慢性) pain have been limited, expensive, or inaccessible. Decades of neuroscience show that attention, expectation, and perception play a decisive role in how pain is experienced. This insight has led researchers to unlikely testing grounds: virtual reality (VR) and imagining relief.
One of the earliest scientists to explore VR’s potential for pain relief is Hunter Hoffman, a psychologist at the University of Washington. He developed an immersive environment called “Snow World” to help children undergoing burn wound care. In the virtual landscape, patients threw snowballs while listening to music. The program has been shown in many clinical studies to reduce both pain and anxiety during burn wound care.
“The driving factor is distraction.” says Zina Trost, a VR pain researcher. “The visual system is so primary in people. And if pain does not have your attention, you are not in pain. This kind of immersive distraction works especially well for short-term pain.
Virtual reality isn’t the only way to tap into the brain’s pain-processing systems. Jian Kang, a researcher at Harvard University, is exploring whether watching a video can ease chronic pain. In a November 2025 study, Kang invited individuals with chronic lower back pain to participate and asked them to watch short videos. In one version, a person underwent acupuncture (针灸). In another video, it showed a simple touch with cotton sticks on a lower back. In both cases, participants were asked to imagine experiencing the same bodily experience
What surprised the researchers was that both videos helped. The effect was stronger in the video acupuncture group — an average of 1.7 points lower in perceived pain — but the cotton-stick videos also produced meaningful relief. This is comparable to some results for real acupuncture. Neuroscience has found that sensory imagery and real bodily experience often engage the identical brain regions — a finding that could explain how the video produces its effect.
VR and video-based approaches are still being studied and their reach remains restricted by awareness and access. But their relatively low cost and ease of use could make them easier to scale. These two approaches are bringing fresh drive to the field.
28. What inspired researchers to test VR and imagining relief?
A. The low effectiveness of pain medicine. B. Findings on pain-related mental factors.
C. Patients’ demand for cheaper pain care. D. Lack of progress in pain research methods.
29. How does VR help with pain relief according to Zina Trost?
A. It reduces long-term pain via music. B. It blocks pain signals in the brain.
C. It boosts visual system’s sensitivity. D. It shifts people’s attention from pain.
30. Why can watching videos relieve pain?
A. The videos lower patients’ pain expectations.
B. Both videos distract patients with pleasant stories.
C. Real acupuncture effects are transferred through screens.
D. Imagined and real experiences involve the same brain areas.
31. What does the author think about the two approaches?
A. Limited but promising. B. Costly but reliable. C. Novel but unsustainable. D. Useful but inflexible.
D
Raindrops are more than a source of fresh water. They also carry mechanical energy that can be used for free. A research team from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics has developed a water-integrated floating droplet electricity generator (W-DEG) that uses natural water as part of its structure, offering clean energy harvesting.
Unlike conventional DEGs, which rely on solid ground substance and costly metal parts, the new design allows the device to float on water. When a raindrop lands on the floating dielectric film (电介质膜), the water beneath it provides the strength needed to absorb the impact because of its surface tension. This lets the droplet spread more effectively across the surface. At the same time, the water layer operates as a reliable electrical conductor. This nature-integrated design cuts the device’s weight by about 80 percent and lowers the cost by about 50 percent while maintaining similar electrical output compared to conventional systems.
Tests showed that the W-DEG continued to function under diverse temperatures and salt levels, and even in natural lake water. These should be put down to its chemically inert (惰性的) dielectric layer and its naturally flexible water-based structure. To improve reliability further, the team used water’s strong surface tension to design holes that let water move downward. This creates a self-adjusting way to stop water from building up that could affect performance.
The system also charged capacitors (电容器) to useful electric tension only within minutes, showing its potential for powering small electronics and wireless sensors. Moreover, with continued development, similar systems could be positioned on lakes or coastal waters, providing renewable electricity without using any land-based space.
Although the laboratory results are encouraging, extending the service life of large dielectric films in dynamic outdoor conditions will also require further engineering. “By letting water itself play both structural and electrical roles, we’ve opened the door to land free systems that can supplement other renewable technologies like solar and wind.” Professor Wanlin Guo, a corresponding author of the study said.
32. What is W-DEG aimed at?
A. Improving electrical conductors.
B. Generating power from raindrops.
C. Increasing power storage capacity.
D. Turning raindrops into green energy.
33. Why did the research team design the holes in the W-DEG?
A. To make the device lighter. B. To produce more electricity.
C. To prevent the standing water. D. To allow water into the device.
34. What is an advantage of W-DEG according to Paragraph 4?
A. Easy operation. B. Low construction cost.
C. Stable performance. D. Rapid charging capability.
35. What might be a direction of the follow-up research?
A. Cost reduction. B. Material recycling.
C. Durability enhancement. D. Structural transformation.

Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural disasters, often striking without warning and causing great damage. Understanding what to do during and after an earthquake can save lives.
____36____ If you are indoors when an earthquake hits, the first rule is to stay calm. Rushing outside in panic (惊慌地) can lead to injuries from falling objects. Instead, hide under a table or desk, holding on to one leg to stay balanced as the ground shakes. Avoid standing near windows, mirrors, or heavy furniture that could fall over.
Once the shaking stops, check the environment around you before moving. Check for any immediate dangers, such as gas leaks (泄漏), or broken electrical wires, or structural damage.
____37____ If you smell gas, turn off the gas supply right away and open windows. For electrical issues, turn off the main power to prevent fires.
If you are trapped under objects after an earthquake, saving energy is key. ____38____ Shout only when you hear rescuers nearby — non-stop shouting can waste energy and leave you very tired. Instead, tap on a pipe or wall with a hard object to let others know your location. This method is more useful and helps you use less energy, increasing your chances of being found.
After an earthquake communities often face long-term challenges, including homelessness, shortage of clean water, and the spread of disease. ____39____ Local governments and aid organizations set up shelters, give out food and water, and provide medical care to those in need. However, recovery takes time, and people can help by donating supplies or volunteering.
By learning about earthquake safety measures and preparing an emergency kit in advance, you can protect yourself and your family when disaster strikes. ____40____
A. These problems require common efforts to solve.
B. Every second matters in such a dangerous situation.
C. Try to stay as quiet as possible to save your strength.
D. Do not use elevators, as they may stop during the quake.
E. Knowing what to do during the quake itself is important.
F Preparation is the best way to face such unexpected disasters.
G. Never light a match or use a candle to check for any damage.

In a small village of Somerset, England, there lived a boy named Jack and his beloved grandfather, an experienced sailor. The wise old man had seen the world and he often told Jack “My boy, remember, no matter how tough things get, as long as you have faith, nothing is impossible”. These words were Jack’s guiding light, especially in the dark days after his grandfather’s passing away.
Luckily Jack had a companion with him, a horse named lightning. Jack and lightning grew up together, exploring the forest and playing by the river. They were inseparable friends. One day, Jack set out on an adventure with lightning. As they went further into the forest, a sudden storm came. When lightning tried to get away from a falling tree, he accidentally stepped into a hidden swamp (沼泽). The mud was so thick that lightning got stuck, unable to free himself no matter how hard he tried.
Panicked, Jack tried to pull lightning out with his own hands, but the swamp was too strong. He ran back to the village seeking for help. Swiftly, a group of villagers followed Jack to the swamp, their faces turning concerned as they saw the half- buried lightning. From their past experience, the villagers were all aware that a situation like this meant death for the trapped animal. Yet, they still tried to use ropes to pull lightning out, but in vain.
As the villagers returned to the village, Jack remained by the swamp, looking at lightning. The once strong horse now stood with his head lowered, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and helplessness as he sank deeper into the mud. Jack, determined to save his friend, recalled his grandfather’s words. Closing his eyes, Jack concentrated, and then a voice echoed in his mind: “Nothing is impossible. Use life to awake life.” Inspired, he thought, “What if I have the other horses run around the swamp to give lightning the strength to keep fighting?”

Today, I want to introduce you to a special museum — the HaHaHouse in Zagreb. This museum is designed to help people fight the negativity in their lives. As soon as visitors enter, a cloud of white smoke greets them, aiming to blow away their worries. Then, they slide down into a ball-filled space to start their journey to happiness. Andrea, the creator of the HaHaHouse, wanted to uplift people with laughter. She was inspired by a picture of herself as a seven-year-old, always joking and bringing joy to others. Altogether, the museum has eight interactive zones. There are rubber chickens singing cheerfully, a singing room with funny voices, and a “Sumo Arena” for a fun wrestling game. It also shows the history of humor. The HaHaHouse allows adults to be like kids again. And kids can have great fun there too. We can say the museum is popular among people of all ages. As the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. So, if you want to relax and have fun, this museum is definitely worth a visit!

D 25. B 26. A 27. C

B 29. D 30. D 31. A

After an earthquake, communities often face long-term challenges, including homelessness, shortage of clean water, and the spread of disease.

故填with。
故填it。

故填a。
故填where。

In a small village of Somerset, England, there lived a boy named Jack and his beloved grandfather, an experienced sailor. The wise old man had seen the world and he often told Jack “My boy, remember, no matter how tough things get, as long as you have faith, nothing is impossible”. These words were Jack’s guiding light, especially in the dark days after his grandfather’s passing away.
Luckily, Jack had a companion with him, a horse named lightning.

With regained hope, Jack rushed back to the village. His heart pounded as he explained his plan to the villagers. Seeing the determination in Jack’s eyes, they agreed to help. Together, they led the horses to the swamp, and they rode the horses to circle around Lightning. The horses’ energy seemed to transfer to lightning, his eyes filled with a shining will to live. Lightning struggled and attempted for several times but he failed to break free. However, Lightning didn’t give up and Jack’s faith and the horses’ circling never stopped. Jack kept shouting, “You can do it, Lightning I believe in you.” His encouragement rang out over the swamp.
On the seventh try, Lightning jumped out of the swamp. Like a flash of lightning, he made it Jack ran over and hugged Lightning’s neck, with tears of joy and gratitude. The villagers burst into cheers, their faces lighting up with relief at the miracle. They surrounded Jack and Lightning, praising Jack for his determined faith. Bowing deeply, Jack expressed his heartfelt thanks to the villagers. From then on, the bond between Jack and Lightning grew stronger, and their story of faith became a legend throughout the village. And Jack’s understanding of his grandfather’s wisdom deepened: with faith and unity, any challenge could be overcome.
