They thought it was going to be easy. A piece of cake. The band, Suenalo, were excited that they would present their skills to a group of troubled youth at a detention center (少管所).
They arrived at the invitation of a friend, who was an adviser at the center. He had mentioned a career day where members of the community came to speak to the teens about their jobs. Usually the speakers were bankers or lawyers, so he thought it would be interesting for the kids to meet some musicians and maybe even hear some music. “They need something cool to get their attention” was the pitch from the friend.
The kids, about 40, were brought in, looking distant, some even angry. Chad Bernstein, the trombone player, started telling the career of a musician from touring to copyright to the business aspects, trying to draw their interest. However, it didn’t. Sensing that they couldn’t win, the band, a little thrown, decided to play one song. With music going, the kids seemed to respond, their heads nodding to the beat. One of them sang a lyric (歌词). The band sang it back. Then, one by one, the musicians began picking up the beat. Chad started free styling a rap, going back and forth with the kid, and in no time, other kids jumped in. Suddenly the band and the kids were creating a song from scratch and all of them were in musical heaven.
For Chad, that moment inspired him to found Guitars Over Guns, an organization that pairs at-risk middle-schoolers with professional musicians. As both music teachers and life coaches, the musicians give the kids a way to find their creative voices and get through dark times. Over time, the kids have dropped their tough fronts and shared personal stories, from family tragedies to ordinary struggles at school with friends.
“So far we’ve helped over 2,700 students. Our work is highly satisfying because it shows us that a music career is more than a job, it can have more impact,” says Chad Bernstein.

Every 40 days a language dies. This “catastrophic” loss is being intensified by the climate crisis; according to linguists. If nothing is done, conservative estimates suggest that half of all the 7000 languages currently spoken will be extinct by the end of the century.
Speakers of minority languages have experienced a long history of persecution (迫害) , with the result that by the 1920s half of all indigenous (土著的) languages in Australia, the US, South Africa and Argentina were extinct. The climate crisis is now considered the “final nail in the coffin” for many indigenous languages and the knowledge they represent.
“Languages are already endangered,” says Anastasia Richl, director of the Strathy language unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Huge factors are globalization and migration, as communities move to regions where their language is not spoken or valued, according to Richl. “It seems particularly cruel,” she says, “that most of the world’s languages are in parts of the world that are growing unpleasant to people.” Vanuatu, a South Pacific island nation measuring 12,189km2, has 110 languages, the highest density (密度) of languages on the planet. It is also one of the countries most at risk of sea level rise, she says. “Many small language communities are on islands and coastlines easily subject to hurricanes and sea level rise.” Others live on lands where rising temperature threatens traditional farming and fishing practices, leading to migration.
In response to the crisis, the UN launched the International Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022. Promoting and conserving languages of indigenous communities is “not only important for them, but for all humanity”, said Csaba Korosi, the UN general assembly president, urging countries to allow access to education in indigenous languages.
8. What is the writer mainly concerned about?
A. The disappearance of languages. B. The challenge of climate change.
C. The reaction to the language crisis. D. The trend of the speedy globalization.
9. Why is Vanuatu mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To explain the main reason for language density.
B. To show the common features of endangered languages.
C. To stress the impact of geographical position on migration.
D. To illustrate the situation of minority language communities.
10. What does the International Decade of Indigenous Languages aim to do?
A. Support migrants to access local education.
B. Discourage people from massive migration.
C. Improve the living conditions of minority groups.
D. Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave
B. Lost for Words: Rising Seas Bring Threat of Catastrophe
C. Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation
D. Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. D 11. B

Research is making surprising discoveries about insects: Honeybees have emotional ups and downs. Cockroaches have personalities and team up to make decisions. Fruit flies experience something very like fear.
We’re pretty sure other humans have feelings because they can tell us. But we don’t know whether the bee is buzzing in anger or in fear. Human babies are silent on the matter, too. It was only in the 1980s that doctors came to believe human babies felt pain.
In recent years, humans have gradually offered membership in the sentience club not only to their own young, but to some other animals. In the last decade, many countries have begun to ban experimentation on all great apes. And some ocean creatures were recently recognized as sentient. But with insects, the question remains open.
Andrew Barron and Colin Klein are behind much of the foundational work on bee brains. In 2016, they published a paper arguing that insects’ brains have the capacity for subjective experience. Their argument follows on the research of Swedish scientist BjörnMerker, whose work suggests that the more basic forms of consciousness (意识) are located not in the cortex (大脑皮层), which insects do not have, but in subcortical structures of the brain, which insects do have. “These subcortical structures are quite big and have a huge amount of processing power,” says Barron. They also argue that these structures may have been the earlier forms of our consciousness during evolutionary development.
Other researchers are digging into the question, too. Jessica Ware notes that she’s unsure what the similarities in these subcortical structures mean for insect consciousness. “We don’t really have enough information to distinguish between what could be consciousness or awareness of the surroundings and what could be us humans interpreting that as consciousness,” she says.
Still, Ware loves the idea of expanding the discussion of consciousness. “The doors are just opening up for further exploration,” she says. “This means we might have stopped looking at what it means to be conscious from a human-centered view.”
12. Why is it challenging to determine the emotional states of insects?
A. Insects tend to hide their emotions.
B. Insects are not capable of communication.
C. Insects rarely experience human-like emotions.
D. Insects cannot convey their emotions to humans.
13. What does the underlined phrase “sentience club” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. Animals selected for scientific research.
B. Social clubs founded to protect animals.
C. Creatures recognised as having consciousness.
D. Organizations committed to emotion management.
14. What do Barron and Klein argue about insect brains?
A. They have developed in similar ways as human brains.
B. They have the competence for emotions and consciousness.
C. They have the same processing power as human beings do.
D. They produce some basic forms of consciousness in the cortex.
15. What is Ware’s concern about Barron and Klein’s argument?
A. The lack of theoretical foundation. B. The possibility of misinterpretation.
C. The underestimation of brain function. D. The use of inappropriate research method.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍一项研究,主要讨论了关于昆虫和其他动物是否具有意识和情感的问题。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“We’re pretty sure other humans have feelings because they can tell us. But we don’t know whether the bee is buzzing in anger or in fear. (我们很确定其他人也有感觉,因为他们可以告诉我们。但我们不知道蜜蜂是在愤怒还是在恐惧中发出嗡嗡声。)”可知,昆虫无法向人类传递情绪,因此确定昆虫的情绪状态是具有挑战性的。故选D项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。划线词句后文“In the last decade, many countries have begun to ban experimentation on all great apes. And some ocean creatures were recently recognized as sentient. (在过去的十年里,许多国家已经开始禁止对所有类人猿进行实验。一些海洋生物最近被认为是有知觉的。)”说明一些生物被认为是有意识的,从而推知划线词句“In recent years, humans have gradually offered membership in the sentience club not only to their own young, but to some other animals. (近年来,人类逐渐在sentience club中提供成员资格,不仅是自己的孩子,还有其他一些动物。)”其中划线短语指的是“被认为有意识的生物”。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“In 2016, they published a paper arguing that insects’ brains have the capacity for subjective experience. (2016年,他们发表了一篇论文,认为昆虫的大脑具有主观体验的能力。)”以及“They also argue that these structures may have been the earlier forms of our consciousness during evolutionary development. (他们还认为,在进化发展过程中,这些结构可能是我们意识的早期形式。)”可知,他们认为昆虫的大脑有情感和意识的能力。故选B项。
15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Jessica Ware notes that she’s unsure what the similarities in these subcortical structures mean for insect consciousness. (Jessica Ware指出,她不确定这些皮层下结构的相似性对昆虫的意识意味着什么。)”以及“We don’t really have enough information to distinguish between what could be consciousness or awareness of the surroundings and what could be us humans interpreting that as consciousness (我们真的没有足够的信息来区分什么是意识或对周围环境的意识,我们人类将其解释为意识的究竟是什么。)”可知,Ware认为Barron和Klein的论点有可能被误解。故选B项。

The Wooden Carving Legacy
Li Ming grew up in an ancient town with a history of over 800 years. Every weekend, he would visit his grandfather, a renowned wooden carver who dedicated his life to preserving the town’s traditional carving techniques. One day, grandfather showed Li Ming a set of old carving tools, his eyes shining with pride. “These tools have been passed down for three generations,” he said. “They once helped restore the town’s ancient theater stage.”
Last month, the town announced a plan to demolish the old theater to build a new shopping mall. Li Ming was shocked. He rushed to the theater, only to find its wooden carvings of dragons and phoenixes were chipped and covered in dust. Grandfather sighed when he heard the news, gently touching a cracked carving on a beam. “This theater was built in the Qing Dynasty,” he murmured. “Its carvings tell stories of our ancestors.”
Li Ming couldn’t sleep that night. He thought of grandfather’s calloused hands and the fading carvings. The next morning, he had an idea. He took photos of the theater’s carvings and posted them online, hoping to attract attention. To his surprise, the post quickly went viral. Local historians and young people who loved traditional culture contacted him, offering to help.
One weekend, Li Ming and a group of volunteers went to the theater to clean the carvings. Grandfather joined them, bringing his old tools. As he carefully brushed off the dust from a phoenix carving, a small piece of wood fell off. He frowned, then said to Li Ming, “This wood is too dry. We need to treat it properly, or all these carvings will be lost forever.”
That evening, Li Ming held a meeting with the volunteers. They discussed how to persuade the town government to change the plan. A history teacher suggested writing a proposal with detailed information about the theater’s cultural value. “We should also show them the support we’ve received online,” she added. Li Ming nodded, feeling more confident than ever.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The next day, Li Ming and his grandfather went to the mayor’s office. The mayor welcomed them warmly and listened carefully as they explained the cultural value of the old theater. Grandfather took out his old carving tools and showed the mayor the details of the theater’s carvings, emphasizing how they represented the town’s history. Li Ming also presented the online support they had received, with photos of volunteers cleaning the carvings. The mayor nodded frequently, looking impressed by their efforts. “This theater is indeed a precious piece of our heritage,” he said seriously.
A few weeks later, the town government made an exciting announcement. They decided to cancel the plan to build a shopping mall and instead invest money in restoring the old theater. Li Ming and his grandfather were overjoyed when they heard the news. Volunteers gathered at the theater, ready to help with the restoration work. Grandfather picked up his tools again, this time to repair the chipped and cracked carvings. As the sun shone on the theater’s wooden beams, Li Ming knew that their hard work had saved an important part of the town’s history for future generations.

4. Why did the band come to the detention center?
A. To get attention. B. To display skills. C. To plan their careers. D. To chat about music.
5. What can we learn about the song created on the spot?
A. Its lyrics were from the kids. B. Chad owned its copyright.
C. It was composed cooperatively. D. The kids picked up its beat.
6. What does Guitars Over Guns do to help at-risk teens?
A. Offer guidance on life. B. Give full school instruction.
C. Relate personal stories. D. Promote awareness of risks.
7. What kind of person is Chad Bernstein?
A. Disciplined. B. Purposeful. C. Humorous. D. Traditional.

D Preserve the languages of indigenous communities.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Faced with Disasters: Communities Have to Leave
B. Lost for Words: Rising Seas Bring Threat of Catastrophe
C. Upset at Extinction: UN Urges International Cooperation
D. Involved in Action: Experts Seek Solutions to Climate Crisis
