Hong Kong chef Grace Choy captured the hearts of audiences on “Chef of China”,a cooking competition on July 17. Choy’s personal journey proves it’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams.
Beginning her cooking career at the age of 43, Choy initially hesitated to join the show due to the belief that she didn’t fit the pattern of a “TV contestant” because of her age. However, with encouragement from a close friend, she took the leap, hoping her journey would inspire others to chase their passions regardless of age.
While the show looked enjoyable on screen, the filming process was incredibly demanding. They had to wake up at 5 in the morning and often didn’t finish until midnight. Despite the exhausting schedule, Choy embraced the challenge and saw the show as an opportunity to showcase her skills and share her vision with a vast audience.
The standout moment arrived when Choy captivated(attract) the judges with her delicate soy sauce (酱油) chicken. For the competition, Choy created Queen’s Chicken, a recipe crafted with deep care and nutrition complexity intentionally for the females. It’s a tribute (歌颂)to grace, nourishment, and the feminine spirit. The dish typically takes a long time to prepare, but Choy shortened the cooking time to 2 hours to meet the requirements of the competition.
Choy’s cooking philosophy is centered on innovation and the harmonious blend of different elements. Her signature soy sauce chicken is already deeply rooted in Hong Kong and Cantonese cuisine. Her passion for cooking has also impressed her viewers, who were drawn to her friendliness and perseverance. Despite lacking formal training, her steady love for cooking has pushed her to remarkable heights. Choy was fortunate to receive wholehearted guidance from renowned chefs who admired her fearless spirit as a middle-aged woman. Her restaurant, ChoyChoy Kitchen, is recognized as one of the Best Private Kitchens in Hong Kong.
24. Why was Grace Choy originally hesitant to sign up for “Chef of China”?

Young adult (YA) fiction is traditionally aimed at teenagers. However, new research shows that a growing number of adult readers have been reading YA fiction since 2019. A study by HarperCollins found that 74% of YA readers are adults, with 28% being over 28.
This trend is partly due to “emerging adulthood”, where young people are growing up more slowly and delaying traditional adult life, often marked by feelings of instability. This has driven them to seek comfort in young adult fiction, a habit that many retain as they grow older.
For many adults, reading YA is simply another enjoyable choice, just like picking any other book genre. Some readers strongly defend the quality of YA, saying that many YA books are beautifully written and deal with important issues such as self-discovery, family, and racism. Furthermore, YA books can serve as a form of “self-care”. Many readers find these books more accessible than a lot of adult fiction. Because YA books are written specifically for slightly younger readers, reading for pleasure when a person is tired becomes less demanding. Besides, their plot-driven nature offers perfect escape from reality.
The study also looked at younger readers aged 14 to 25. It found that 40% of those who strongly identified as a reader also described themselves as “very happy”. This is much higher than the 21% of non-readers who felt the same way. Alison David, consumer insight director at HarperCollins, said the research “suggests wellbeing comes from more than the act of reading. The psychology of being a reader is enormously powerful.”
Despite the clear benefits, the study shows a contradiction (矛盾): only 16% of 14-to 25-year-olds read daily or nearly every day for pleasure. Many report that heavy schoolwork leaves them with too little time to read for fun. This presents a challenge: how to encourage regular reading among young people who know its value but struggle to find time for books.
28. What does the underlined word “retain” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Change. B. Keep. C. Restore. D. Abandon.
29. Why do some adults turn to YA books for self-care?
A. Because they are simple and engaging. B. Because they are easy to get from stores.
C. Because they are less plot-driven. D. Because they are full of joyful themes.
30. What can be inferred from the data about reading and happiness?
A. The happier young people are, the more books they read.
B. Reading every day is the key to happiness for the young.
C. A positive reader self-image contributes to one’s happiness.
D. Schoolwork is the main factor affecting students’ happiness.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. The rise of YA fiction among adult readers.
B. The new trends of fiction reading and writing.
C. The challenge of reading for young people.
D. The benefits of reading to well-being.

The effects of high altitude (海拔) on the human body could protect against obesity (肥胖), according to a study of more than 4 million children across Colombia. The findings support the theory that low oxygen levels drive increased energy consumption, though prior evidence comes mainly from adults.
To understand the potential impact on children, Lizcano Losada at the University of La Sabana analysed data on 4.16 million children aged up to 5 years old from 1123 cities. The children were separated into four groups relating to the height above sea level at which they lived: up to 1000 metres, 1001 to 2000 metres, 2001 to 3000 metres or above 3000 metres.
In the two lower-altitude regions, around 80 out of every 10,000 children had obesity. However, at altitudes of 2001 to 3000 metres, the prevalence (发生率) of obesity fell to 40 in 10,000. At altitudes above 3000 metres, the prevalence was higher again: 86 out of 10,000. However, the team says this may be a statistical accident, as this data set included fewer cities and children than the other three altitude ranges.
“That’s a fair comment,” says David Stensel at Loughborough University. But he also emphasises the study is observational, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. “They’ve tried to make sure they’ve adjusted for the other potential influencing factors,” he says. These include measures of poverty and low income. But “you can’t account for everything”, says Stensel. Assuming high altitude really does make obesity less likely, Stensel says it isn’t clear how this knowledge could be of practical use in reducing the condition.
However, Losada argues the findings support the creation of geographically tailored public health strategies. He suggests further studies are needed to better understand the biological pathways linking altitude to childhood obesity, which could lead to more precise health advice for different regions.
32. What was the analysis in Losada’s study mainly based on?
A. Grouped data. B. Sample size. C. Children’s age. D. City type.
33 What is the team’s view on the unexpected result of the study?
A. It’s a definite trend. B. It’s a chance occurrence.
C. It’s a misleading signal. D. It’s a measurement error.
34. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning Stensel in paragraph 4?
A. The importance of health knowledge. B. The necessity of actionable strategies.
C. The limitation of the research method. D. The complexity of the influencing factors.
35. What is Losada’s attitude towards the study?
A. Dismissive. B. Objective. C. Mixed. D. Indifferent.

Human waste could help farmers
Some types of farming are harmful to the planet. ___36___
A lot of crops need extra nutrition to grow, so farmers add substances called fertilizers (肥料) to their soil to boost plants’ growth. These are important because they keep crops healthy and make sure that there is enough food for people and animals. ___37___ Every year, farmers around the world spend huge amounts of money on a total of 205 million tons of fertilizers, leading to severe water pollution and loss of biodiversity.
___38___ They are mostly made in factories by burning natural gas and mixing it with minerals. Producing fertilizers takes a lot of energy and the whole process — from digging out the minerals to transporting the final product to farms — creates pollution. This pollution includes carbon dioxide, a gas that contributes to climate change.
Nevertheless, a method known as biochar technology, which is already used to make fuel, could turn human waste into a different type of fertilizer. The new study suggests this could be better for the planet and cheaper for farmers. Human waste is rich in nutrients which plants love. ___39___ Even worse, it can also contain leftover medicines, microplastics and poisonous metals.
According to the new study, biochar technology can turn human waste into safe plant food. The process is called pyrolysis, where the waste is heated up in special tanks. ___40___ Besides, the waste is made into solid, dry blocks, which are up to 90% smaller and lighter than the original form, which would make it much easier to store and transport.
A. Fertilizers are usually a mix of certain chemicals.
B. What is beneficial to plants is beneficial to the environment.
C. On the negative side, it can carry harmful bacteria and viruses.
D. But with too much use of fertilizers, the quality of crops suffers.
E. Unfortunately, they are expensive and come at an environmental cost.
F. However, a new study has found that could change thanks to human waste.
G. The harmful stuff in the waste won’t be a problem as it can be removed in the process.

M: Yes, and there’s more to it, like potatoes or other vegetables. It burnt my mouth, but I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a pie this good! Now, where shall I put the empty pie case? There is no rubbish bin around.
W: I have a garbage bag. You can use it.
M: Why do you carry this with you?
W: For such a situation. Protecting the environment begins with not littering.
M: Good for you.
W: Look, how exciting — the players are coming out for the second half!
M: Yeah! It will be a close game!

【原文】M: I’m here with Professor Clark. Professor, do you bring us any good news about bees today?
W: Yes. In recent years bee numbers have dropped a lot, mainly due to chemical-heavy farming and climate change. Phone signal and diseases also have impacts. But we have created a bee “superfood”! It can help increase their numbers.
M: That’s great. So, how can this new feed help?
W: In tests, the number of bees increased by fifteen times after they ate it. This feed is rich in plant protein. Bees can eat it when there are not enough flowers, so they stay strong and keep raising babies.
M: Amazing. You must have been doing this for many years.
W: Since graduation. It’s taken me 20 years to focus on this project. I love bees. I’ve been interested in biology since I was 10.
M: Having a brilliant mind like yours on board made all the difference. Let me thank you on behalf of every bee. Thank you for talking to us!

【原文】Across the road is the National Museum of Scotland, but that’s not our next point of interest. It’s actually right here. Please say hello to one of Scotland’s most famous dogs, Greyfriars Bobby! As you can see, this is just a statue of Bobby. The real dog died years ago. It was January 14th, 1872, to be exact. When he was very young, his owner, John Gray, sadly died. Bobby spent the next fourteen years guarding John’s grave (坟墓)! He loved his owner so much that he never wanted to be parted! Every day, people would see him sitting there. He became quite the celebrity! He was so popular that the leader of Edinburgh city at the time, Sir William Chambers, paid for Bobby’s dog license in 1867. Bobby eventually died and was buried not far from his beloved owner, which means that even today, he remains by his owner’s side! Over the years, people have told many versions of this story. Countless books have been written, and films made! Greyfriars Bobby is a symbol of love and devotion (忠诚) to this day! In my opinion, this is the most touching part.

【答案】28. B 29. A 30. C 31. A

D. City type.
33. What is the team’s view on the unexpected result of the study?
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. C 35. B

【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“‘That’s a fair comment,’says David Stensel at Loughborough University. But he also emphasises the study is observational, so it doesn’t prove high altitude prevents obesity. ‘They’ve tried to make sure they’ve adjusted for the other potential influencing factors,” he says. These include measures of poverty and low income. But ‘you can’t account for everything’, says Stensel. Assuming high altitude really does make obesity less likely, Stensel says it isn’t clear how this knowledge could be of practical use in reducing the condition.

【答案】36. F 37. E 38. A 39. C 40. G
