My undergraduate student needed advice after yet another failed experiment. Sitting across from me, she looked exhausted — frustrated even. I heard myself say, “This is part of research. You just have to push through.” But even as the words left my mouth, I felt uneasy. She nodded silently and shifted her posture. Afterward, she began showing up less frequently and eventually stopped coming altogether. I tried to explain it away: undergraduates sometimes get busy with coursework, lose interest or change direction, but deep down, I wondered what I could have done differently.
I became a mentor (导师) during my second year of Ph. D. but didn’t get much guidance on how to do it. I learned only by doing. There were moments I felt proud of. One student started out quiet and unsure, but over time grew into a most independent and confident young researcher. Before graduating, she told me, “You are the reason I stuck with this.” That moment stayed with me. But so did the other one — the silence, the absences, the slow fade-out. Had I failed her?
It wasn’t until the final year of my Ph. D. that I came across a leaflet for a mentorship training workshop. Skeptical at first, I decided to try it. The program, called Entering Mentoring, brought together graduate students for weekly discussions. For the first time, I had the space to explore the invisible labor and emotional complexity of mentoring. One session asked us to reflect on our own practices. I began to realize what might have been missing in my relationship with the student who had drifted away. I had never invited her to share her goals or concerns. I could have been more attentive to her unspoken struggles.
After the workshop I began changing how I interacted with students. I now start by asking how they’re doing, not just experimental details. This shift has led to more honest conversations. I’ve learned that good mentors are built through reflection and training. I wish I’d attended that workshop earlier, but I’m grateful I did at all.
4. What primarily caused the student’s withdrawal according to paragraph 1?
A. Demanding research challenges. B. Overwhelming academic workload.
C. Repeated failures in research. D. Unattended inner struggles.
5. Why did the author mention the transformation of another student?
A. To highlight contrast in mentoring results.
B. To showcase his pride in her achievement.
C. To explain his own research breakthrough.
D. To illustrate his lack of proper guidance
6. What did the workshop mainly focus on?
A. Developing excellent academic research skills.
B. Encouraging discussions among graduate students.
C. Exploring the interpersonal aspects of mentoring.
D. Displaying diverse personal mentoring approaches
7 Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Responsible and reflective. B. Talented and intelligent.
C. Thoughtful and ambitious. D. Disciplined and considerate.
C
Teenagers around the world are familiar with the great pain of boredom. And every parent is familiar with the sounds of groaning kids, sulking (生闷气) in their room or pacing aimlessly around the house. But sometimes, it’s this very sense of boredom that can inspire creativity and create fast-growing trends.
This is true for pickleball (匹克球), now a popular sport in the West. According to the Mental Floss website, the sport was invented in the summer of 1965. At that time, Frank Pritchard, 13, had nothing to do in his family’s summer home in Washington, US. After complaining loudly, his father, Joel, suggested he make up a game. When Frank replied “Why don’t you?” his father gladly took up the challenge. Thus, pickleball was born.
Certain parts of tennis, badminton and ping-pong can be seen from pickleball. It’s a bat game played on a badminton-sized court with what looks like a wiffle ball (威浮球) over a low net. Only the serving team can score points, and all serves must be made with an underhand stroke (击球).
The popularity of pickleball has grown steadily over the last decade. According to Mental Floss, the number of pickleball courts has grown by an estimated 385 percent worldwide since 2010.One reason for its popularity is that it’s “a sport for everyone”. Anyone can play pickleball because it’s relatively easy to pick up. There are simple rules, and all people need is a couple of bats and a ball, which is affordable and accessible to all. Plus, pickleball is a sport centered around fun and friendship. The game lasts as short as 15 minutes, which means less running and stress for players.
Pritchard said that the game’s rapid rise in popularity was startling, especially considering that a bad-tempered kid “inspired a sports craze by making a complaint about being bored one afternoon 56 years ago”.
8. What do we know about pickleball, according to the passage?
A. It is a game suitable for family gatherings.
B. It was invented accidentally by a young boy.
C. The game’s judges come from a serving team.
D. It combines elements from several ball games.
9. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. What equipment pickleball players need.
B. How significant pickleball is to the world.
C. Why pickleball has become well received.
D. What rules must be obeyed in pickleball.
10. What does the underlined word “startling” probably mean in the fifth paragraph?
A. Awful. B. Natural. C. Reasonable. D. Amazing.
11. Why does the author write the passage?
A. To advise us to join in sports games. B. To tell us the birth of a sports game.
C. To teach us how to play pickleball. D. To motivate us to follow new trends.
D
As cats age, they may cry more than usual at night, struggle with sleep, and act confused. A new study reveals that, like humans with Alzheimer's disease, protein plaques (斑块) build up in aged cats' brains — causing brain issues like overactive immune cells and supporting cells that damage delicate synapses, the critical connections between nerve cells.
Earlier studies had found proteins in the brains of cats but failed to clarify how these proteins specifically disturbed brain function. McGeachan from the University of Edinburgh knew that synapses decline early in Alzheimer's disease in humans, so he and his team decided to focus on these connections in their cat study. They found that the brains of aged cats, with or without dementia (痴呆), had more of the protein than the younger brain samples — and the plaques in the older cats often formed right around synapses.
In all the aged cats, immune cells were overactive. These cells also looked like they were gathering near the plaques,a sign that they were sent to target the proteins. But instead of attacking only the plaques, the cells also seemed to be attacking some synapses. The results are similar to what is seen in human brains with Alzheimer's. Immune cells also gather around the plaques and damage the neurons and their connections in humans with Alzheimer's. Because of these similarities, cats are ideal for showing what human Alzheimer's is like. Current ways of studying Alzheimer's include using mice, which have to be genetically modified (修改) to develop Alzheimer's. Contrary to these engineered models, aging cats have a key advantage.
His team is now studying more cat brains to spot patterns between cats with and without dementia, and plans to check other Alzheimer's-related signs in cat brains. "Cats won't replace mice as models, but more research helps them too,” he adds. "We can improve health for both humans and animals.”
12. What causes aged cats' unusual behaviors mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. Brain issues caused by sleep trouble. B. Immune system-related brain issues.
C. Overactive cells unrelated to plaques. D. Protein plaques accumulated over time.
13. What sets the research apart from previous studies?
A. It confirmed that protein plaques in cats only existed in those with dementia.
B. It focused on synapses to explain how brain proteins damage brain function.
C. It demonstrated that immune cells in senior cats had no relation to plaques.
D. It proved cats were more ideal research models than genetically modified mice.
14. Why are cats better than mice for Alzheimer's research?
A. Cats develop dementia in a natural way. B. Cats need less gene editing than mice.
C. Cats have clearer dementia signs than mice. D. Cats' dementia relates to artificial changes.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Aged Cats: Sleep & Confusion Fixes B. Protein Plaques: Synapse Damage Factor
C. Aged Cats: Alzheimer's Study Model D. Protein Plaques: Brain Issue Source

Gardening can be both personally satisfying and a good activity for the mind and body. Flowers beautify your surroundings, while fresh vegetables provide some of the tastiest foods on your table.
A seedling is a young plant grown from a seed. ____16____ But what happens when they get bigger? Seedlings that start indoors or in a greenhouse need to go through a period of transition before they can safely remain outdoors. ____17____ It will prepare the seedlings for wind, stronger sunlight and up-and-down temperatures.
First, make the transition from indoors to outdoors slowly, over a week or two. A good place to harden off seedlings is in a partly protected area outside the home, such as a coldframe. ____18____ You can also harden off seedlings near a wall in an area where there is a mix of sun and shade. Or keep the seedlings fully exposed to outdoor weather conditions—for short, but increasing periods.
____19____ Sunlight can damage the leaves of seedlings that have grown indoors. Even without cold, outdoor sunlight can be as much as 10 times more intense than light from the inside of a sunny window.
Slow exposure to more intense light thickens cell walls as well as existing and new leaves. This exposure can begin in areas of partial shade, or with just a few hours each day of full sun. ____20____
A. Next, expose the seedlings to the sunlight slowly.
B. The home is a good place for seeds.
C. This period is called “hardening off”.
D. The hot sunlight might harm the young plants.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Karie checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent, she’d win her class’s Spelling Challenge and a brand-new dictionary. Besides, Ms. Iris had promised to do handstand (手倒立) if anyone got perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper. “I’ll correct these while you’re having a break,” Ms. Iris said.
After the break, Karie hurried into the classroom. She was on pins and needles in her seat, tapping her pen and crossing her fingers for luck. Just then, Ms. Iris walked to the front, and like a gymnast, she flipped (翻转) into the air. “Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down. The whole class erupted! Ms. Iris righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned (露齿而笑) as she read the label on the box: To Karie, for her perfect score in spelling.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school.
“Everything’s PERFECT!” Karie shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize, “but I nearly misspelled honesly ...” Wait! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y! Karie felt butterflies in her stomach. “Karie, what’s the matter?” inquired Mom gently. “I don’t feel so good”, Karie said. “Probably too much excitement.” Mom rubbed her back and got her a cup of tea. After a few drinks, Karie walked with heavy steps down the hall and fell onto her bed. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize after all?
Soon her sister Kevin came in. The smell of her pizza floated in the air. Karie remembered last time when the salesclerk gave them too much change after their purchase of pizza, mom insisted on returning the money. But Kevin thought it was the salesclerk’s fault instead of theirs. If Kevin had been right, then wasn’t it Ms Iris’s fault in the first place? And if she just picked up her pen, and put the missing t back in, no one would ever know.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
Ms. Iris was unlocking the classroom door when Karie got to school the next morning.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
For a moment, Ms. Iris stood quietly examining the label on the dictionary.

After the workshop, I began changing how I interacted with students. I now start by asking how they’re doing, not just experimental details. This shift has led to more honest conversations. I’ve learned that good mentors are built through reflection and training. I wish I’d attended that workshop earlier, but I’m grateful I did at all.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. B

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

The right Way to Move Plants Outdoors

【答案】 A Meaningful Social Practice: Stepping into Rural Life
Last Sunday witnessed a meaningful social practice activity organized by our school. All the students in Grade 1 participated in it. After gathering at the school gate at 7:30 a.m., we headed for the nearby countryside by school bus. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the villagers. We then were divided into groups to engage in various activities. Some students picked fruits and vegetables, while others learned to cook local dishes. After lunch, we visited a local museum, which showcased the history and development of the village.
Through this activity, we gained valuable insights into rural life. We enjoyed the beauty of nature, appreciated the hard work of farmers, and deepened our understanding of teamwork. It was an unforgettable experience that will have a lasting impact on our future studies and careers.

【答案】Possible version 1:
Para. 1:
Ms. Iris was unlocking the classroom door when Karie got to school the next morning. No sooner had Karie caught sight of Ms. Iris than she ducked her head. A faint blush crept over her face. “Good morning, Karie! Are you alright?” Ms. Iris grinned at her, stroking her head gently. “I ...,” Karie’s voice cracked all of a sudden, as if she had to choke her words out of throat. After a few seconds of struggles, Karie plucked up her courage to return her dictionary to Ms. Iris, murmuring, “I can’t keep this. I misspelled honestly and you didn’t catch it.”
Para. 2:
For a moment, Ms. Iris stood quietly examining the label on the dictionary. Next to her stood nervous Karie, her nails digging into her palms. Embarrassment fell upon the whole vacant classroom. It was at the very moment that Ms. Iris picked up the pen, and replaced the label with a new one, with “for honesty” on it. Casting a glimpse at the label, Karie stared at Ms. Iris, her jaw dropping, “I get to keep this? Honestly?” Ms. Iris flashed a smile, “Yes, for your real honesty.” At this, Karie was overwhelmed with rapture, eyes glistening and lips curving into a radiant smile.
Possible version 2:
Para. 1:
Ms. Iris was unlocking the classroom door when Karie got to school the next morning. Glancing at Karie’s figure, Ms. Iris flashed an affectionate smile to her, who was momentarily at a total loss. Somewhat awkward, Karie forced a reluctant smile before making the ultimate decision. Sensing her hesitation, Ms. Iris comforted, “just take it easy”, whose gentle tone and soothing words immensely tugged at her heartstrings. It was then that Karie mustered up courage to tell the truth. After taking over the dictionary Karie handed her, Ms. Iris gazed at the skinny figure leaving dejectedly.
Para 2:
For a moment, Ms. Iris stood quietly examining the label on the dictionary. On sober reflection, she picked up the pen and added something. Then Ms. Iris glimpsed at the girl curling up with lips drooping, who could even picture classmates’ teasing and the teacher’s harsh denial. However, what greeted her was Ms. Iris’s approval, together with her advice, “honesty should be your eternal companion”. As Karie traced the altered label, the sunlight through the window made the word “honest” glow. It wasn’t just a dictionary anymore—it was a reminder that true perfection lies in courage to be real.
