The Wolf at the Door
Russ Fee was asleep inside his tent last summer when a series of screams shocked him awake. Throwing on his shoes, he ran out to investigate. Fee and his wife were travelling through Canada’s Banff National Park to enjoy its breathtaking beauty and awesome wildlife. It was the latter he now experienced. Although it was dark, Fee could see a neighboring tent was in a mess. Backing out was a wolf, dragging something in his teeth. That thing was a man.
Moments earlier, Elisa and Matt Rispoli, from New Jersey, were asleep with their two young children when the wolf broke into their tent. “It was like something out of a horror movie,” Elisa posted on Facebook. “For three minutes, Matt threw his body in front of me and the boys and fought against the wolf. At one point, Matt got the upper hand, pinning (压住) the wolf to the ground. But the wolf held its jaw onto Matt’s arm tightly, set its powerful legs, and began dragging Matt outside while I was pulling on his legs trying to get him back,” Elisa wrote.
It was then that Fee entered the picture. He ran at the wolf, kicking it “like I was kicking in a door,” he told ABC New York. The wolf dropped Matt and emerged from the tent. “Wolves are large,” Fee told the radio show Calgary Eyeopener. “I felt like I had hit someone that was way out of my weight class.”
Before the wolf could turn its anger on Fee, Matt, his arms bloodied, flew out of the tent to continue the battle. The men threw rocks at the wolf, forcing it back, then the Fees and the Rispolis escaped to the shelter of the Fees, minivan and called an ambulance. Matt was taken to a local hospital suffering from open wounds. Luckily, he has fully recovered. The wolf was tracked down by park officials and killed in a painless way.
As for Fee, whom Elisa called their lifesaver, he does admit to a fleeting, if less-than-heroic, thought during the heat of battle. The moment the wolf locked eyes with him, Fee says, “I immediately regretted kicking it.”
24. What happened to the Rispolis one night last summer?
A. They were scared by a horror movie. B. They were suddenly woken up by screams.
C. They suffered a surprise attack from a wolf D. They got injured and taken to the hospital.
25. Russ Fee joined Matt Rispoli when .
A. Matt was dropped down by the wolf B. Matt gained the advantage over the wolf
C. the wolf broke into the tent of the Rispolis D. the wolf was dragging Matt out of the tent
26. Matt Rispoli survived because .
A. the wolf was killed by park officials B. he took shelter in a neighboring tent
C. the wolf was driven away by Russ Fee D. he got great help and timely treatment
27 What can we learn about Russ Fee from the last paragraph?
A. He feels regretful for what he did. B. He enjoys being called a lifesaver.
C. He admits his fear during the fight. D. He feels quite heroic about himself.
C
Playing a rhythm-based (基于韵律的) game using musical instruments for eight weeks helps non-musicians become better at remembering recently seen faces; that is, their short-term memory for non-musical tasks improves.
There have been several studies showing that musicians tend to have better short-term memory than non-musicians when it comes to music-related tasks. It is less clear whether the benefit carries over to non-musical tasks or to non-musicians who are learning to play an instrument, and how the change might actually be seen in the brain.
Theodore Zanto at the University of California, San Francisco thinks the benefit will continue to exist. He and his colleagues randomly arranged for a group of 47 non-musicians to play either a tablet-based musical rhythm training game, which is similar to learning to hit a drum in time with the music, or a word search game for eight weeks. At the start and end of the eight weeks, participants took a short-term memory test to measure their ability to remember a face they saw seconds before. Only the group who played the rhythm training game showed an improvement on their initial scores.
Brainwave data recorded before and after the training showed an increase of activity in the right superiors parietal lobe (上顶叶), a brain region associated with encoding (把…编码) visual information and attention. This suggests, says Zanto, that the rhythm training is improving the brain’s ability to focus attention on a task to get it ready for changing what you are doing into memory.
The ability to remember and recognise faces tends to decline as we age, so any possible way to change that is important, says Josh Davis at the University of Greenwich, the UK. However, the effect demonstrated in this study should be shown in real-world facial recognition situations as well as in lab-based tests to be completely convincing, says Davis.
28. Why did Theodore Zanto carry out the memory test?
A. To prove previous studies. B. To make comparisons.
C. To confirm his prediction. D. To explain a phenomenon.
29. What function is the right superior parietal lobe related to?
A. Training attention. B. Recognising faces.
C. Visualizing memories. D. Processing information.
30. How does Davis find the study?
A. It has limitations. B. It’s fully convincing.
C. It lacks systematicness. D. It’s indeed pioneering.
31. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Great Influence of Rhythm-based Games
B. The Practical Method of Preventing Memory Loss
C. Playing Instruments: A Way to Improve Short-term Memory
D Rhythm Training: A Necessity for People with a Poor Memory
D
Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system coming into use on August 11 in California, a search engine company announced.
The company, which helped develop Android, worked with California and the United States Geological Survey to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the common mobile operating system. Android users who have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen earthquake warning telling them to seek cover. The screen also will provide estimates of the quake’s magnitude and distance from the user. Depending on their distance from a quake, people could get several seconds or perhaps a minute of warning.
Users won’t need to download California’s MyShake app in order to receive the alerts. That application, developed by the University of California, Berkeley and launched last year, has been downloaded by only about 1 million of California’s 40 million residents. By contrast, many millions of people own Android phones.
“This announcement means that California’s world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone — giving millions of people precious seconds to seek cover and hold on when the big one hits,” Gov.Gavin Newsom said in a statement. The iPhone users won’t receive the alerts through Apple’s operating system, but they can download the MyShake app.
Also, the company announced that Android phones would begin detecting earthquakes from around the world through their motion-sensing accelerometers. “Your Android phone can be a mini-seismometer, joining millions of other Android phones out there to form the world’s largest earthquake detection network,” according to a blog post of the company. More than 2 billion devices run the Android operating system. Hundreds of millions of people live in earthquake-prone areas. But many countries lack the resources to build detection and alert systems, the company said. The information will be used at first to provide fast and accurate information on the search engine. But the company said it could begin sending out earthquake alerts next year.
32. If an earthquake hits the US, who won’t receive the earthquake warning?
A. Android users who haven’t downloaded the MyShake app.
B. The iPhone users who have downloaded the MyShake app.
C. The iPhone users who haven’t downloaded the MyShake app.
D. Android users who have downloaded the MyShake app.
33. What can we learn from the text?
A. Millions of people have downloaded the MyShake app.
B. The earthquake early warning system will be of great help.
C. The search engine company has already sent out earthquake alerts since last year.
D. Over 2 billion devices run the Apple operating system.
34. What will globalize the search engine company’s earthquake detection network?
A New technology developed by the company.
B. The large number of Android phone users.
C. Motion-sensing accelerometers.
D. The newly developed MyShake app.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To share a new MyShake app.
B. To promote Android phones.
C. To make a search engine company known to the world.
D. To introduce a new function of Android phones.

While the children were all playing with the lamb, the butcher and his boy came to the door. “ You see I am here for the lamb, ” said the butcher in a loud voice. Hearing this, one child ran to her mother’s side, and asked what was happening in alarm. Mrs. Grant gently pushed the child aside, bent down and was about to tell the truth.
“That’s my lamb now, Charlie! ” said the butcher’s boy in a playful tone, going up to Daisy with a rope in his hand.
“No, it is not your lamb. It is ours! ” said Charlie, placing himself in front of it.
But the boy, pushing him aside, threw a rope round Daisy’s neck, and began to drag the little creature away. The poor lamb bleated (咩咩叫) very sadly. The cry of grief which fell upon the mother’s ears was too much for her, and her heart sank within her. In a moment, begging with tearful eyes, the children were all around their mother with voices choking with sobs for their little pet.
“Please tell your boy to stop a moment, ” she said in husky tones to the butcher. The boy, at a word from the butcher, stopped dragging the lamb, and the little creature stopped its bleating.
In a trembling voice, Mrs. Grant explained to them how badly off they were after their father died. She also added that the kind butcher had given the money for Daisy. With this money, she could buy her children bread to eat.

C. the wolf broke into the tent of the Rispolis D. the wolf was dragging Matt out of the tent

Playing a rhythm-based (基于韵律) game using musical instruments for eight weeks helps non-musicians become better at remembering recently seen faces; that is, their short-term memory for non-musical tasks improves.
D. Rhythm Training: A Necessity for People with a Poor Memory
【答案】28. C 29. D 30. A 31. C
【解析】

【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Playing a rhythm-based (基于韵律的) game using musical instruments for eight weeks helps non-musicians become better at remembering recently seen faces; that is, their short-term memory for non-musical tasks improves.(使用乐器玩基于韵律的游戏八周有助于非音乐家更好地记住最近看到的面孔;也就是说,他们对非音乐任务的短期记忆得到了改善。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了使用乐器玩游戏(即演奏乐器)可以提高非音乐家的短期记忆。故选C。

Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system coming into use on August 11 in California, a search engine company announced.
The company which helped develop Android, worked with California and the United States Geological Survey to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the common mobile operating system.
A. New technology developed by the company.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. B 35. D

Almost all the possessions had been sold to buy food and clothing for the family. At last, nothing was left but the pet lamb, Daisy. At the thought of parting with the little creature, Mrs. Grant’s felt sad because the children loved it very much. Having struggled hard, she had to make up her mind to sell the lamb. But she could not ask any child to go for the butcher. Finally, she went herself with a heavy heart, dragging her leaden feet, and bargained with the butcher for the sale of Daisy.

But the more she explained, the stronger her children begged for Daisy. “ No!-No!-No! ” they dashed to Daisy and threw their arms around her, begging, “ Please, mother! We would rather go hungry than lose her! ” Hearing this, Mrs. Grant was in great sorrow, her heart bleeding. After all, she clearly knew that the children had devoted so much love to Daisy and that Daisy was more than a pet lamb to them; she was, in their eyes, a family member! Having struggled hard, she turned to the butcher and decided that she would not sell Daisy and would return the money.
Paragraph 2:
The Butcher, who had been watching all, was touched in his heart. When Mrs. Grant took out the money and gave it back, he just waved his hand and announced, “ I will not rob the children of their pet! ” He approached the children, patted them on the shoulders gently and promised that he would buy Daisy from their mother and then gave it back to them as a gift. The word left the children standing stunned. Then, looking up at him, one asked seriously, “Sir, do you really mean that?” The butcher just replied seriously, “ I mean every word of it. She is OUR Daisy. My boy and I will come to see her occasionally. ” Hearing this, all the children gathered round and stroked the pet, their little hearts filled with joy.
