Railway Routes to Enjoy in Your Christmas Holidays
Train travel adds to the charm of Europe’s Christmas markets. Passing the storybook villages and evergreen hills, the journey itself is an essential part of the Christmas market experience.
Zermatt — St. Moritz Line: Switzerland’s winter masterpiece
The Glacier (冰川) Express operates on the line. It earns its name as the world’s slowest express train, taking passengers eight hours to travel across just 180 miles. But that’s a feature, not a shortcoming. The expansive windows frame the Swiss Alps like an IMAX screen, showing off 291 bridges, 91 tunnels, and the impressive Landwasser Viaduct. Join the Christmas joy in St. Moritz for its hand-carved decorations, gingerbread, and piping-hot cheese.
Romantic Rhine Line: From Cologne to Frankfurt
This UNESCO World Heritage route follows the Rhine River through Germany’s most concentrated display of medieval (中世纪的) romance: a landscape of rolling vineyards, picturesque villages, and many hills topped by castles. Centuries-old markets will bring you back to the old days.
The Bernina Line: From glaciers to palms (棕榈树)
The UNESCO World Heritage Bernina Line lifts you from Swiss Alpine drama to Italian palm- lined ease in just four hours. The train rounds the showstopping Brusio Spiral Viaduct, giving you a front-row seat to experience one of railway engineering’s most elegant designs. In Chur, the Christmas market is tailor-made for winter wandering, and candle-lit decorations cover everything in a soft, joyful shine.
The West Highland Line: Scotland’s impressive north
As one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys, the West Highland Line delivers raw, dreamlike beauty. It cuts across vast Rannoch Moor before following Loch Lomond and sweeping over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, revealing a breathtaking landscape of mountains, valleys, forests, lakes, and beaches.

For Dionta White, 23, working with Southside Blooms — a non-profit organization in Chicago’s flower industry for at-risk young people — has been transformative. He says seeing how far he has come from his past feels “like a starting point”.
So what’s a flower farm doing in Chicago? That’s where Quilen and Hannah Blackwell come in.
While coaching kids on Chicago's south side, Quilen met Hannah doing similar work on the west side. A shared faith and commitment to local youth led them to partner professionally and personally — they got married and founded Southside Blooms.
“Since no overseas flowers were available in the area, we saw an opportunity to bring that growing production to the city,” Quilen says. The Blackwells initially acquired unused city lots and transformed them into flower gardens, with some sites provided for free by the city and others donated. They later bought additional land, expanding their flower-growing operations to six locations citywide.
Southside Blooms employs young people to farm the land and run the flower business. Some work outside learning basic farming skills, while others learn about high-end floristry (花艺) . All Southside Blooms arrangements emphasize environmental protection practices. They avoid floral foam (花泥) and use only plant-based packaging. The leftovers are repurposed, often as gifts for families, or turned into soil. They even use solar power to run their watering systems.
When 18-year-old Rashod Little needed to make money, he decided to try working at Southside Blooms. “Through talent and hard work, he quickly excelled. Now he has carved out a niche in high-end customized floristry in Chicago's flower industry and made a name for himself,” Quilen says. “He recently bought a car and his own apartment. He's definitely one of our success stories.”
4. Who does Southside Blooms help?
A. Needy youth. B. Medical staff.
C. Flower farmers. D. Gardening lovers.
5. Why did the Blackwells choose to plant flowers?
A. To offer professional training to local residents.
B. To supply a locally missing product to the market.
C. To beautify unused urban spaces in their community.
D. To set up an environmentally friendly flower business.
6. What do the underlined words “carved out a niche” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Established a position. B. Built partnership.
C Understood the risk. D. Missed the point.
7. Which of the following best describes the Blackwells?
A. Patient and energetic. B. Honest and reliable.
C. Devoted and humorous. D. Creative and responsible.
A 5. B 6. A 7. D

There is a widespread awareness of a growing mental health crisis. While overall rates in countries like Australia have remained steady, a troubling trend (趋势) is hidden within the data. For young people aged 16 to 24, the percentage of mental problems has risen sharply, from 26% to 39%.
In his book, The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt claims that most popular reasons given for the problem are not convincing enough. He also points out that the major reason lies in the big change — children’s lives have become centered on mobile phones. Smartphones and social media have changed children’s life. These devices, with their addictive apps and systems, expose (使暴露) young people to damaging content, lead to harmful social comparisons, and influence sleep. Worse still, they also act as a block, reducing the time spent with friends and the opportunities for developing skills in social interaction and everyday independence.
To address this public health issue, Haidt advises a collective response that bridges families, schools, and governments. This approach is essential because individual efforts are often weakened by peer pressure and the digital culture. Parents should focus on taking action by working together to delay their kids’ access to smartphones and social media, such as using parental controls, and encouraging free play and activities in nature. Schools need to set clear rules such as introducing phone-free periods during school hours and discouraging overprotective parenting to help children develop healthy independence. Meanwhile, governments and tech companies have a responsibility to protect children. Tech companies should set a higher age for “Internet adulthood” while governments need to carry out these safety standards, build more child-friendly public areas, and pass laws.
More young people are suffering today than there would be if the rates of mental problems had stayed steady. Solving the crisis requires moving beyond merely treating individual pain to jointly changing the phone-based environment that is fueling the anxiety of a generation.
8. Why was the data mentioned in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the common sense of a crisis.
B. To highlight a worsening problem among youth.
C. To compare health trends in different countries.
D. To prove the steadiness of overall mental health.
9. What is the main reason for mental health problems?
A. Screen-based childhood. B. Family-related issues.
C. School-caused pressure. D. Society-driven comparisons.
10. What does Haidt suggest as a solution?
A. Timely medical treatment. B. Strict self-control measures.
C. Multi-level social cooperation. D. Digital education for children.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Treatment for Teenage Anxiety B. Health Data Reveals a Troubling Change
C. The Importance of Maintaining Mental Health D. Screen Overuse Makes the Anxious Generation
B 9. A 10. C 11. D

Whether it’s answering work emails or drafting wedding vows (誓言), AI tools have become an assistant in many people’s lives. But a growing body of research shows that for every problem AI solves, there are unintended environmental consequences coming to light. Each word in an AI prompt (提示词) is separated and sent to the data centers powered by coal and oil. The process is energy-consuming.
To find out the cost per prompt, researchers in Germany tested AI systems by asking them various questions. Their study found that complex questions produced up to six times more CO₂ than questions with brief answers. In addition, “smarter” AI models with advanced thinking abilities produced up to 50 times more CO₂ than simpler systems to answer the same question. “This shows the balance between energy consumption and model performance,” said Maximilian Dauner, a doctoral student at Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences. The smarter models function like connections in a brain, enabling more complex “thinking”.
So, what can users do to reduce their environmental impact? Dauner suggests users be more direct: point out the desired answer length or state that no explanation is needed. Most importantly, not all AI models are created equal. Sasha Luccioni, the climate lead at AI company Hugging Face, advises choosing task-specific models, which are often smaller and just as effective for specific needs. For simple tasks, using basic tools like online search is more recommended. Luccioni disagrees with the unnecessary push to add AI to every application.
However, measuring AI's exact environmental impact is challenging. Energy consumption varies based on location, equipment, and model design. Furthermore, many AI companies don’t share their energy consumption data or environmental impact. “We need to look at each individual model for each task,” said Shaolei Ren, a professor of engineering at the University of California. Despite challenges, Ren and Luccioni both remain positive, noting more efforts by engineers to improve AI’s performance are on the way, and highlighting that AI's environmental impact is a problem we should pay attention to.
12. What does the author say about AI tools?
A. Their prompts come from big data. B. Their problems outweigh the benefits.
C. Their use generates rising hidden costs. D. Their performance depends on users' questions.
13. What is a finding of the German researchers?
A. AI's energy cost varies with task difficulty. B. Online searches are more time-saving.
C. Smarter AI models consume less energy. D. AI tools are better at complex thinking.
14. How can users lower their AI energy consumption?
A. By asking for specific explanation. B. By using the most advanced AI tools.
C. By limiting the prompts to certain words. D. By balancing the use of AI and other tools.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. AI will see much wider application soon. B. AI’s environmental impact will be ignored.
C. AI models’ effectiveness will be increased. D. AI’s energy consumption data will be shared.
C 13. A 14. D 15. C

根据固定搭配“play a role in...(在……中扮演/发挥作用)”可知,空处需填不定冠词,又因“increasingly”以元音音素开头,此处应用不定冠词an。故填an。
分析句子结构可知,空格处引导非限制性定语从句,先行词为前文“Nearly 26, 000 copies of its English translation were sold in 2024”这件事,关系词在从句中作主语,应用which引导。故填which。
故填as。

根据时间状语“Over the past few years(在过去几年里)”可知,此处应用现在完成时,主语“institutions”为复数,助动词用have,achieve的过去分词为achieved。故填have achieved。
故填farther/further。

I'd loved hip-hop dancing since my childhood, and in high school I took classes that focused on jazz and hip-hop. Dance was my favorite class, and I looked forward to going every day. This year is my senior year and I couldn't wait to see what the dance class would bring me.
On the first day of class, a fellow dancer told me our new teacher was Ms. Barton, who only taught ballet. I had never taken ballet before. I admitted I was a bit nervous, but also up for the challenge.
As I entered the classroom, all the girls were ready. We all stood at the barre (扶手杆) as Ms. Barton ran us through basic ballet steps — plié, tendu, dégagé and rond de jambe to name a few. She was just how I had imagined a ballet teacher would be: excellent posture with a strict attitude.
Along with my fellow classmates, I began my grand plié, with one hand on the barre and the other motioning out to the side, slowly bending down with my knees held at a level.
I wanted to give myself a pat on the back. But Ms. Barton gave me a stare and asked everyone else to watch me do a grand plié.
“Wow, she must think I’m great to demonstrate.” Hiding my excitement, I performed again. Complete silence. All eyes were on me.
“Now, class, this is an example of what not to do,” Ms. Barton said.
Red face. Eyes watering. A wave of pure embarrassment came over me. What had just happened? What should I do?
I tried to finish the rest of the class to the best of my ability. Before the class ended, Ms. Barton briefly mentioned two important things: there would be a final dance presentation at the end of the term to show our learning achievements and she would also select one student for the “Ballerina Award”. I spent the rest of the day reflecting on the moment, feeling upset and even wanting to quit. But my pride wouldn’t allow it, and Ms. Barton's announcement gave me a ray of hope.

That night I thought it over and eventually decided to keep going. I made up my mind to practice ballet hard. From the next day on, every morning I arrived at the dance studio an hour earlier than others to repeat basic steps. I stared at the mirror to correct my posture, and even asked classmates with ballet experience to help me adjust my movements. No matter how tired I felt after school, I never skipped a day of practice. Something inside me wanted to prove that I could do it.
Months later, the dance presentation day arrived. When it was my turn, I moved smoothly and confidently, every step precise and graceful. The audience burst into thunderous applause as I finished, and Ms. Barton looked at me with a rare smile. Though I was not the best ballet dancer out there, I spared no effort to prepare for it and gave it my all. At the award ceremony, I was declared winner of the Ballerina Award by Ms. Barton. I received the prize, a bit teary-eyed, and said sincerely, “Thank you for challenging me.”

C. Multi-level social cooperation. D. Digital education for children.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Treatment for Teenage Anxiety B. Health Data Reveals a Troubling Change
C. The Importance of Maintaining Mental Health D. Screen Overuse Makes the Anxious Generation

12 What does the author say about AI tools?
