I love snakes, while my mother does not. Lots of people who are afraid of snakes have never seen one. Neither has my mother. So where does the fear come from?
To find out the answer, scientists put pictures with snakes, pandas, cats, flowers and many other things in front of a group of people of all ages, even babies. People found snakes faster than flowers. It wasn’t just snakes. They found black faces, for example, spiders, faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems we find things that might be dangerous to us faster. Maybe we are born to be afraid of them.
Scientists also found people learned to fear snakes faster. Why did they fear snakes? Most of them said that in their experiences, they were affected by the scared voice and faces of those who met snakes, but weren’t bitten by snakes. After all, if we had to be bitten by a snake to learn that it’s dangerous, we might learn our lesson too late.
So why is it important whether we are afraid of snakes or not? It may not matter much to us, but it is really very important to snakes. People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as pandas, but they’re just of the same importance to the environment. Snakes eat insects and mice that are pests to humans. Snakes are also food for other animals, so when we kill snakes, we’re breaking the balance.
How can we reduce our fears to give snakes a chance? Scientists did a study recently. Some volunteer students went on a field trip. With the help of safety tips, everyone could safely touch and hold a snake. It turns out (结果是) that snakes aren’t so bad when you know the way to stay with them. Most people who were afraid of snakes before the field trip weren’t afraid afterwards. In fact, snakes even became some students' favorite animal. Hmm, maybe I should take my mom on the next field trip.
13. What does the writer mean by saying “we might learn our lesson too late” in the third paragraph?
A. We might never see any snakes.
B. We are not in danger any longer.
C. We might not fear snakes any more.
D. We might already be killed by snakes.
14. How do the scientists help people reduce the fear of snakes?
A. By teaching people skills of killing snakes.
B By driving snakes away through a field trip.
C. By teaching them the right way to stay with them.
D. By giving snakes a chance to show they are good.
15. Which fits the scientists’ idea best?
a. are born to fear snakes
b. need our protection
c. don’t protect animals they fear
A. 1-c, 2-a, 3-b B. 1-b, 2-a, 3-c C. 1-a, 2-c, 3-b D. 1-a, 2-b, 3-c

Katie was waiting for Gulliver’s calls. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. “Maybe Gulliver missed the harbour,” Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats made pretty pictures, but not the one she wanted most.
Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle’s neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull’s name, Gulliver, was given by him. The gull’s size and its single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie that what Gulliver did that first summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone’s attention.
Young Katie lay in her stroller (婴儿车) on the floating dock (码头) when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie’s stroller shake strongly. “Kee-aahl! Kee-aahl!” Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and Uncle rushed to Katie and stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye on Katie after that. Another summer when Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn’t watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. “Kee-aahl! Kee-aahl!” The gull’s cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards the water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things.
This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she’d learned to do. One day she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather? She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around knees, she closed her eyes to hold in the tears (眼泪). “Kee-aahl! Kee-aah!” Katie sat up. “Katie! Katie!” Soon, Dad and Uncle Ralph appeared. “How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks,” Uncle Ralph said, “At least... it sounded like him. Strange, he was nowhere in sight.” Katie remembered the feather. “I thought I heard him, too.”

When the leaves begin to change their colours and the birds head south we know the season is starting to change. On September 7th comes White Dew, the 15th solar term of the year. It indicates (暗示) the beginning of the cool autumn. As the temperature falls, white dew is often seen on the grass and trees at night.
For writers and poets, autumn is a difficult season to describe. It’s the end of the summer, and therefore a little sad. The days seem to get shorter, and when you wake in the morning, there’s mist (薄雾) and it’s cooler. Winter is just around the corner.
American writer Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book “A Moveable Feast”, “You expected to be sad in the fall. Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare (光秃秃的) against the wind and the cold, wintry light.”
But on the other hand, autumn has its good side. There are so many changes at this time of year, such as the colourful leaves and cooler nights. French writer Albert Camus even thought autumn was a second spring, “when every leaf is a flower”. This view is also found in the most famous autumn poem in English literature, “To Autumn” by John Keats. In that poem, Keats said that autumn had its own songs, just like spring.
Another theme of this season is wisdom. The arrival of autumn is thought to be similar to a person becoming mature (成熟的). The great Irish poet W.B. Yeats wrote about the changing seasons in Coole Park in the west of Ireland. Seeing and counting 59 swans, he remembers first making the count as a young man. Seeing the swans do the same thing for all those years, he’s reminded that even though we get older, our hearts always stay the same age. He used this idea in his poem “The Wild Swans at Coole”.
19. “A Moveable Feast” was mentioned to
A. point out that autumn is very cold
B. present the sad part of autumn
C. show that winter will soon come
D. express sadness about the end of life
20. What does “this idea” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Autumn is an important season for man.
B. We can always stay young at heart.
C. Autumn is related to one’s growing old.
D. Nature is full of lessons to be learned.
21. What’s the article mainly about?
A. The solar term White Dew.
B. Why autumn is a sad season.
C. Autumn weather and activities.
D. Famous writers’ description of autumn.

Taking a nap is a good way for students to relax after lunch. To make it more comfortable, many middle and high schools use foldable (可折叠的) desks and chairs. However, not all of these desks and chairs are well designed-some are the wrong size or shape, and their poor design may even cause discomfort or harm to students.
To solve this, a new national rule was rolled out on 2nd September. It explains clearly how to make and use foldable desks and chairs correctly.
In primary schools desks should be between 45.5 and 73 centimeters tall. In middle schools, they should be between 56.5 and 79 cm tall. Chairs should be at least 36 cm wide to help students sit well. For naps, the chairs can be turned into a bed. A bed should be at least 105 cm long, and the backrest (靠背) should lean back more than 135 degrees.
The desks and chairs must also be strong. For example, a chair can be folded up to 10,000 times. They should be easy to clean as well. If ink gets on them, students should be able to clean it with an eraser.
The new rule will take effect on 1st February next year. Before that, experts said that schools still need to think about a few things. For example, do the new desks fit in different classrooms? And are they good for classes with many students?
52. What is the new national rule about?
________________________________________________________________
53. What are two requirements (要求) for the desks and chairs besides size and shape?

54. Do you want to take a nap with such desks and chairs? Why or why not?

One day, she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm.

When the leaves begin to change their colours and the birds head south, we know the season is starting to change.

In primary schools, desks should be between 45.5 and 73 centimeters tall.
