Silver Spring, Maryland is a center for immigrants (移民) and refugees. Manuel Vera, now known as the “Bike Dude”, found some unique and creative ways to support his community.
At first, Manuel Vera just wanted to do something productive during the COVID-19 lockdown (封锁). So he offered to fix people’s bikes for free in his neighborhood.
“Then I started thinking about all the bikes people have at home that never get used,” says Vera, 74, who is retired from the local power company. Soon he asked neighbors to donate bikes collecting dust after kids had outgrown them or adults had upgraded to new models. Then, in his tidy little backyard shed, he’d get to work. Since space is so tight, Vera prefers to work alone though not for lack of volunteers.
Vera repairs the bikes and gives them away at parks with a “Free Bikes” sign. Then he pairs people up with the perfect new ride and watches them pedal away happily. His first giveaway saw six bikes go in under 30 minutes.
But Vera wanted to reach those who needed help the most. Making life better, one bike at a time. In addition to helping the adults and kids he meets at his Free Bikes events, eager customers also come from local resettlement agencies. The agencies provide Vera with the height, gender and age of a rider, and he delivers a fitting bicycle to their door. He’s happy to make the trip.
Vera recalls that an Afghan man needed a way to get to his new job as a night security guard. Vera provided him with not only a bike and helmet but also lights and a reflective vest. Lbrahim Alashe’s new bike cuts his travel time in half.
“When I sought bicycles, it was very expensive, so when he does this for people, it makes them so happy,” says Alashe. “It was one of my dreams to get a bicycle. So it’s very good.”
So far, his simple offer to repair bikes has grown into an engine of kindness, providing wheels to over 700 people and fueling the entire community.
4.What did Manuel Vera first offer to do for his neighbors?
A.Donate bicycles to refugees. B.Fix their bikes without charge.
C.Collect unused bikes from them. D.Teach bike repair skills online.
5.Why did Vera choose to help people through resettlement agencies?
A.To get more volunteers for his small shed. B.To earn a reputation as a community leader.
C.Because giving bikes in parks was not successful. D.To help people with the greatest needs more directly.
6.Which words best describe Manual Vera?
A.Strict and serious. B.Kind and thoughtful.
C.Shy and quiet. D.Ambitious and proud.
7.What does the story mainly tell us?

(2025-2026学年江西吉安市高二上学期期末教学质量检测英语试题)
My whole family flew from New England to Seattle for my graduation ceremony — especially my mom, my biggest supporter who is warm and never shy about how much she loves me. She’d spent weeks preparing every little detail, packing my favorite snacks and texting me daily to remind me to stay calm when nervous.
The ceremony was at a downtown church I’d never visited, on a wet December afternoon. As I was getting ready, I heard about the stairs I’d have to climb during the ceremony — I couldn’t handle that pressure, and walking across the stage already scared me.
I called my friend Sally, crying “I wouldn’t go” — the stairs were the last thing that made me give up. We’d gotten through two tough years of staying together: taking classes, studying, and editing each other’s work. Sally was my school-provided notetaker, since my cerebral palsy made writing slow. I couldn’t take notes, listen, and join discussions at once. She knew my tears weren’t just about stairs, but feeling hurt — everyone knew about my disability, yet planners ignored easy access for people who struggled with steps.
I’d texted my mom earlier, worrying I might freeze or fall. Her reply was very instant: “You’ve gotten through harder things than a few stairs, love. We’ll be right there, cheering so loud you’ll hear us over everyone else.”
“You’re walking!” Sally said, promising to make arrangements for me. At the sight of her timely presence, my breathing slowed, and I agreed to be at the church in an hour. At the church, I saw the stairs and realized I also feared shaking hands, as my right hand was unsteady from cerebral palsy. Tears nearly came back, but Sally hugged me: “I’ve got it worked out. You won’t be alone.” We joked in the restroom, and her words calmed me. I walked into the church, focused on getting through. During the ceremony, I watched graduates climb the stairs and cross the stage smoothly, one by one.

A.How bicycle recycling benefits the environment.

With my turn coming near, I couldn’t help but feel nervous again. I thought of the stairs and my right hand, hands trembling. Sally walked over and held my left hand to calm me. When my name was called, she guided me to the stage side. Surprisingly, there was a small passage instead of stairs! With her support, I walked onto the stage smoothly. When I lifted my foot, I heard my mom’s cheer cut through the air. The principal smiled and shook my left hand gently, avoiding my right hand. The audience burst into applause, and a flash of relief and pride filled me. When I stepped out of the church, my mom and Sally were both proud of me. Mom hugged me, tears of joy in her eyes. “You did it, honey! We’re so proud,” she said. Sally gave me a small gift — a notebook with her notes, “I knew you’ll overcome everything in spite of difficulties.” Looking at them, I realized that my graduation wasn’t just about myself, but about the people who stood by me and the stairs that helped me grow. That cold December afternoon became the warmest memory of my life.
