For centuries, reading has meant engaging with the written word — whether on ancient scrolls (卷轴), hand-copied texts, or printed books. When we read, our eyes scan words, our brains process their meaning, and we form an understanding in our own head. But does reading always have to involve the eyes? Talking books — the earliest form of audiobooks — were created in the 1930s to help blind individuals access books. And now, millions of people listen to books every day.
At a cognitive (认知) level, listening and reading activate similar parts of the brain. When you hear a book, your brain still processes words, interprets meaning, and builds comprehension. However, there are differences: reading print requires decoding letters and forming mental images, while listening processes sound and depends on memory. This raises the question of whether audiobooks qualify as reading.
Actually, neither form is better. Some prefer the physical book feel, while others love the flexibility of audiobooks. Studies show that comprehension levels between audiobooks and print books are comparable — as long as the listener is fully engaged. However, factors like background noise, multitasking, and passive listening can affect reading effectiveness. If you’re simply letting an audiobook play in the background, you might not absorb it as well as if you were sitting with a paperback.
Still, hearing a narrator’s voice can actually enhance the reading experience — especially for dialogue-heavy stories. Many authors today even record their own voices for audiobooks, adding a personal touch.
The way people consume stories has changed throughout history. From oral storytelling to printed books to e-books and now audiobooks, every generation adapts to new forms. Beyond their original purpose of aiding individuals with disabilities, the rise of smart speakers, voice assistants, and mobile devices has allowed audiobooks to open doors for people with busy schedules, who can now multitask while enjoying a good book.
So, can we call someone who listens to audiobooks a reader?
√If reading is about comprehension, then yes.

Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a strategy to solve this complicated problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze.
Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion video captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists. More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists survive them by four years, living to 76, on average. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy revelation concerning this discrepancy (差异): “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists; nevertheless, the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory illuminates the difference between upward and downward social comparison.
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the inner motivation, and thus the delights that people obtain from their activities. The concept at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
5.What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A.Silver medalists smiled as frequently as bronze medalists.
B.Bronze winners appeared happier than silver medalists.
C.Bronze medalists’ smile lasted longer than every silver medalist’s.
D.Both medalists’ emotions were unchanged from the events to the podium.
6.What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span?
A.The stress from downward social comparison.
B.The motivation from upward social comparison.
C.The failure to maintain upward social comparison.
D.The effect of different types of social comparison.
7.What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness?
A.Learn from the top performers.
B.Commit to our consistent personal growth.
C.Try to be the best in every field.
D.Strengthen our achievement motivation.
8.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Social Comparison: A Double-Edged Sword for Athletes.
B.Social Comparison: The Root of Misery in Human Competition.
C.Coming in Third: The Unexpected Secret to Longevity.
D.Coming in Third: The Advantages of Being “Good Enough”.
根据第二段中“Using slow-motion video captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium, researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. (通过使用在赛事结束后即刻以及在颁奖台上拍摄的慢动作视频,研究人员发现,铜牌获得者在平均意义上看起来比银牌获得者更快乐。)”可知,1995年的研究表明,铜牌获得者看起来比银牌获得者更快乐。故选B项。
6.细节理解题。根据第三段中“In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists; nevertheless, the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory illuminates the difference between upward and downward social comparison. (换句话说,银牌获得者会认为自己是第一失败者,因为他们总是将自己与最高领奖台上的选手进行比较,而忽略了其他所有未能登上领奖台的选手;然而,铜牌获得者则会将自己与所有从未登上过领奖台的选手进行积极的比较。这一理论揭示了向上型和向下型社会比较之间的差异。)”可知,奖牌获得者寿命差异的原因在于不同类型的社会比较带来的心理影响。故选D项。
7.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The concept at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you. (这里起作用的理念是:努力提升自己的过往表现,而你唯一需要与之进行比较的对象就是你自己。)”可知,作者建议我们致力于持续的个人成长,即与自己比较、不断进步,从而获得成功。故选B项。
8.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Fortunately, there is a strategy to solve this complicated problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze. (幸运的是,有一个解决这一复杂问题的策略:不要总是追求金牌,而应努力争取铜牌。)”可知,文章主要指出不必总追求“金牌”,争取“铜牌”,即“足够好”,反而可能带来幸福与长寿,并通过研究数据和社会比较理论论证。因此,D项“位列第三:做到‘足够好’所带来的好处”准确呼应主题,适合作为文章标题。故选D项。

福建省龙岩市2025~2026学年第一学期期末高二教学质量检查英语试题
How long has dance been a thing? The answer depends on how you define “dance.” Do movements need to be in time with a beat? Is it dance if there’s no music?
We humans have likely been moving our bodies as a way to express feelings, for about as long as we’ve had bodies. 1
To explore the origins of dance, we need help from historians. Historians are sort of like detective s. To solve the mystery of when an activity began, they use clues left behind. Dancing doesn’t usually leave evidence on its own. But if a dance is recorded in some way — say, with writings, drawings, or photographs — historians have an easier time studying it. 2
Learning about dance from very long ago, when there were fewer ways to record daily life, is much harder. So some historians dig for the information — by actually digging! 3 And in some cases, they have found a type of historical record with clues about dance: artwork.
The little that is known about dance in ancient times comes from artifacts painted or engraved with images of people in what seem to be dancing poses. 4 Others were on pieces of tile (瓦片) or pottery that were dug up. And some of these images seem to prove that people were dancing at least 13,000 years ago.
5 We can’t say for sure. But, depending on what you consider dance, you could argue that it began even before humans existed! Some animals can move to a beat, and many sway, flap or shake when courting lovers. Maybe animals look at us and think, “So you think you can dance?”
A.How long did dancing exist before the time?
B.Some of these paintings were on rocks in caves.
C.Writing and drawing were significant ways for historians.
D.But moving in time to music took longer for our ancestors.
E.That’s why we know more about when recent dances began.
F.When did humans begin to move their bodies to express emotions?
G.They search in areas where they believe people of ancient cultures lived.
【答案】1.D 2.E 3.G 4.B 5.A
1.前文“We humans have likely been moving our bodies as a way to express feelings, for about as long as we’ve had bodies. (人类拥有身体以来,很可能是一直通过身体动作来表达情感的)”提出人类可能从拥有身体起,就通过肢体动作表达情感;空处需要承接这一话题,同时呼应开头关于“舞蹈定义”的讨论(是否需要跟随节拍、是否需要音乐)。D选项“But moving in time to music took longer for our ancestors.(但我们的祖先花了更长时间才学会跟着音乐节拍律动)”用 but 转折,区分了“单纯肢体动作”和“伴随音乐的舞蹈”,衔接自然。故选D项。
2.前文“But if a dance is recorded in some way — say, with writings, drawings, or photographs — historians have an easier time studying it. (但如果某种舞蹈是以某种方式被记录下来的——比如通过文字、绘画或照片——历史学家就更容易对其进行研究)”说如果舞蹈被文字、画作等记录下来,历史学家就更容易研究。E选项“That’s why we know more about when recent dances began.( 这就是为什么我们对近代舞蹈的起源了解得更多)”是对前文原因的直接结果总结——近代记录方式更多,所以相关研究更充分,逻辑连贯。故选E项。
3.前文“Learning about dance from very long ago, when there were fewer ways to record daily life, is much harder. So some historians dig for the information — by actually digging!(从很久以前、记录日常生活方式较少的时代去了解舞蹈,要困难得多。所以一些历史学家会通过实际挖掘来获取信息——真地进行挖掘!)”提到研究远古舞蹈很难,因此有些历史学家会实地挖掘。G选项“They search in areas where they believe people of ancient cultures lived.(他们在那些据信曾有古代文明人群居住的区域搜寻)”具体解释了历史学家“挖掘”的地点,承接前文的“dig for the information”。故选G项。
4.前文“The little that is known about dance in ancient times comes from artifacts painted or engraved with images of people in what seem to be dancing poses.(关于古代时期舞蹈的所知甚少,都是从那些绘有或雕刻着似乎处于舞蹈姿势的人的图像的文物中得来的)”指出关于远古舞蹈的少量信息来自带有舞蹈姿态人物形象的文物;后文“Others were on pieces of tile (瓦片) or pottery that were dug up.( 还有一些则刻在被挖掘出来的瓷砖或陶器上)”提到“另一些(图像)则在出土的瓦片或陶器上”。B选项“Some of these paintings were on rocks in caves.( 其中一些画作刻在洞穴的岩石上)”用 Some...Others...
5.后文“We can’t say for sure. But, depending on what you consider dance, you could argue that it began even before humans existed!(我们无法确定。但,如果把舞蹈的定义放宽一些,你可以说它甚至在人类出现之前就已经存在了!)”回答“我们无法确定”,并进一步推测舞蹈可能在人类出现前就存在。A选项“How long did dancing exist before the time?(在那之前,舞蹈已经存在了多久?)” 故选A项。

√If reading is about accessing stories and information, then yes.
√If reading is about engagement and enjoyment, then yes.
