Banana bread has always been my favorite, especially the ones my mom made. The crispy brown top and the mouth-watering smell could turn our home into a heaven. The key wasn’t the flour or sugar — it was the bananas. To me, fresh, yellow bananas seemed perfect, but Mom always said, “They’re not ready yet.” Her insistence (坚持) on waiting for bananas to fully ripen (成熟) before baking always annoyed me. Later, I learned that the gas released (释放) by bananas makes them sweeter and softer, and ripe bananas are more perfect to delicious bread. So, I guess my mom was right. I had to let them be. They were just not ready yet.
I considered this lesson relatively unimportant until recently. Years later, as a teacher candidate in the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP), I faced a similar struggle in teaching. I worried: “What if students aren’t ready for exams? Shouldn’t I push them harder?” Firstly, I thought I was just learning how to teach chemistry. However, my professors guided me to an eye-opening realization: I was not teaching chemistry, I was teaching students.
That slight distinction over what I was teaching will change how I see teaching forever. Beyond teaching the chemistry knowledge, I am also teaching students community, determination and how to fit into the challenging education system. Indeed, every student comes to school with different challenges — some struggle with complex terms like “financial aid,” while others face unspoken expectations from peers and teachers. Whether in high school or college, students need time to learn knowledge and develop abilities.
Like the bananas before banana bread, I need to let my students be and support them until they are ready, no matter whether you are a professor or a teaching assistant. Being patient, knowing that it takes time to make progress and that you should not push someone until they are ready, is a practice that can be learned and does not take an advanced degree in chemistry to do so.
4. What made Mom’s banana bread special?
A. Her knowledge of food chemistry. B. Her insistence on the condition of bananas.
C. Her choice of good flour and sugar. D. Her experience in making the bananas ripen.
5. What did the author realize during STEP?
A. Pushing students harder could help them learn better.
B. Students’ readiness for exams required urgent attention.
C. Chemistry teaching was more important than other subjects.
D. She was teaching individuals rather than chemistry knowledge.
6. Why does the author mention students’ different challenges in paragraph 3?
A. To show need for learning time. B. To advocate peers’ immediate help.
C. To praise students’ constant efforts. D. To analyze causes of academic pressure.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Waiting for Ripening B. Making Banana Bread
C. Learning to Teach Chemistry D. Overcoming Learning Challenges
B 5. D 6. A 7. A
根据第一段中“To me, fresh, yellow bananas seemed perfect, but Mom always said, “They’re not ready yet.” Her insistence (坚持) on waiting for bananas to fully ripen (成熟) before baking always annoyed me. Later, I learned that the gas released (释放) by bananas makes them sweeter and softer, and ripe bananas are more perfect to delicious bread. (对我来说,新鲜的黄色香蕉看起来就是最理想的,但妈妈总是说:“它们还没熟呢。”她坚持要等到香蕉完全成熟后再进行烘焙,这总是让我感到很烦。后来我了解到,香蕉释放出的气体会使它们变得更甜、更柔软,而成熟的香蕉更适合用来制作美味的面包。)”可知,妈妈的香蕉面包的特别之处在于她坚持使用特定条件的香蕉。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Firstly, I thought I was just learning how to teach chemistry. However, my professors guided me to an eye-opening realization: I was not teaching chemistry, I was teaching students. (首先,我原以为自己只是在学习如何教授化学知识。然而,我的导师们却引导我有了一个令我大为震惊的领悟:我并非在教授化学知识,而是在教导学生。)”可知,作者在STEP期间意识到,她是在教学生个体而非仅仅是化学知识。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Indeed, every student comes to school with different challenges — some struggle with complex terms like “financial aid,” while others face unspoken expectations from peers and teachers. Whether in high school or college, students need time to learn knowledge and develop abilities. (事实上,每个学生来到学校时都面临着不同的挑战——有些学生会因诸如“助学金”这类复杂的术语而感到困惑,而另一些学生则会受到同学和老师无形的期望影响。无论是在高中还是大学,学生们都需要时间来学习知识并培养能力。)”可知,此处列举学生的不同挑战后,用总结句点明学生需要时间学习知识并培养能力。由此可知,作者提到这些挑战,是为了表明学生需要学习时间。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中“Like the bananas before banana bread, I need to let my students be and support them until they are ready, no matter whether you are a professor or a teaching assistant. (就像之前制作香蕉面包那样,我需要给我的学生们一些空间,给予他们支持,直到他们做好准备为止,无论你是教授还是助教。)”可知,文章采用类比的方式,前半部分用等待香蕉成熟才能做出美味面包的经历,引出后半部分在教学中的核心感悟:教育如同等待果实成熟,需要耐心给予学生时间,等待他们准备好。因此,A项“等待成熟”最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。
C
Blind boxes, also called mystery boxes, have become very popular in recent years, especially among online shoppers. People are interested in them because no one knows what is inside until they open the box. The surprise and excitement make blind boxes a popular fashion.
What are blind boxes exactly? They are packages with different things inside. Buyers can’t see these things before opening. You can buy them online or in stores, and they have many kinds, such as beauty products, clothes, games or food. The price of each box is fixed, but the value of the inside things is different- it’s like a game of luck. Why do people love them? It’s because surprise makes our brains produce dopamine (多巴胺),a material that makes us feel happy. Also, the fear of missing out (FOMO) is another factor that drives people to buy blind boxes, as they do not want to miss out on the chance of receiving a special or rare thing.
However, buying blind boxes has risks. First, you may get things you don’t like or don’t need. Second, some blind boxes have low-quality or fake (虚假的) products, which is a waste of money. So, before buying, you should check the seller’s information and read other buyers’ comments to make sure the box is worth the price.
If you think the risks are too big, there are better choices. One alternative is subscription (订制) boxes. They are similar to blind boxes, but you can choose the kind you like. The things inside are made for your needs. Another choice is to buy single things. This way, you can be sure to get the ones you want and will use.
While blind boxes are amusing and exciting, they do come with certain problems. Thus, it is important to check the seller’s details and read other buyers’ reviews before you decide to buy one. For those who want more control over something they buy, subscription boxes or single things are better choices. In the end, whether to buy a blind box depends on your own choice and how much you want to try your luck with the unknown.
8. What is special about blind boxes?
A. They don’t cost much. B. The content inside is a surprise.
C. The price changes daily. D. They are intended for adults.
9. Why is FOMO mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To explain a common shopping habit. B. To describe a feeling of excitement.
C. To give a reason for buying blind boxes. D. To compare two different emotions.
10. What does the underlined word “alternative” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Box. B. Surprise. C. Choice. D. Tip.
11. What is suggested if one wants more control over his buys?
A. Order a box with confirmed contents. B. Choose a box with lower fixed price.
C. Find buyers’ information after buying. D. Follow the seller’s comments carefully.
B 9. C 10. C 11. A

根据第一段中的“People are interested in them because no one knows what is inside until they open the box. The surprise and excitement make blind boxes a popular fashion.(人们对它们感兴趣是因为直到打开盒子,才知道里面装的是什么。这份惊喜和刺激让盲盒成为一种流行时尚。)”以及第二段中的“Buyers can’t see these things before opening.(买家在打开之前看不到里面的东西。)”
根据第二段中的“Why do people love them? It’s because surprise makes our brains produce dopamine (多巴胺),a material that makes us feel happy. Also, the fear of missing out (FOMO) is another factor that drives people to buy blind boxes, as they do not want to miss out on the chance of receiving a special or rare thing.(人们为何会喜爱盲盒呢?因为惊喜的感觉会让大脑分泌多巴胺 —— 一种能让人感到愉悦的物质。此外,错失恐惧症也是促使人们购买盲盒的另一大因素,因为人们不愿错过获得专属或稀有好物的机会。)”可知,文中提及FOMO是为了解释人们购买盲盒的其中一个原因。故选C项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“If you think the risks are too big, there are better choices. One alternative is subscription boxes.(如果你认为风险太大,还有更好的选择。其中alternative是定制盒。)”可知,前文提到有更好的选择,后文紧接着介绍定制盒,因此“alternative”与前一句中的“choices”表意相近,意为“选择”。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“One alternative is subscription boxes. They are similar to blind boxes, but you can choose the kind you like. The things inside are made for your needs. Another choice is to buy single things. This way, you can be sure to get the ones you want and will use.(其中一个替代选择是定制盒。它们与盲盒类似,但你可以选择自己喜欢的类型,里面的东西都是根据你的需求定制的。另一个选择是单独购买单品,这样你能确保买到想要且会用到的东西。)”以及根据第五段“For those who want more control over something they buy, subscription boxes or single things are better choices.(对于那些想要更自主掌控所购物品的人来说,定制盒或单独购买单品会是更好的选择)”可知,想要掌控所购物品,可选择内容确定的定制盒或单品,即订购内容已确定的盒子。故选A项。
D
For a long time, animals have been important in scientific research. For example, frogs helped researchers find out how cells (细胞) communicate. In the United States, millions of animals are used in research every year. They help in basic science to understand how life works.
However, animals are not always the best models for studying how material affects humans. So many scientists are looking for other methods. Besides concerns about animal well-being, research animals are expensive. They take a long time to raise and need much care. More importantly, there are scientific problems: animal bodies are not perfect substitutes (替代品) for human bodies.
Nicole Kleinstreuer from the US National Institutes of Health said, “We’re not 150-pound rats.” She leads a program for other animal research methods. She points out that animals often react differently to medicines than humans. For example, aspirin is safe for most adults but harmful to rats.
It’s guessed that over 90% of cancer medicines that worked in animal tests did not help humans. To deal with this problem, Kleinstreuer’s team is developing new research methods based on human biology. They hope these methods will make research more trustworthy, faster and cheaper. Policy support helps this change. A 2022 US Congress law canceled the old rule that human medicines must first be tested on animals. It encourages researchers to use the best methods, whether they use lab animals or not.
In April 2024, the US FDA announced plans to replace animal testing for some medicines. In fact, since 1959, the “three Rs” principle (原则) has guided biological research: using fewer animals (Reduction), reducing hurt to them (Refinement), and using non-animal methods when possible (Replacement). This principle was hard to practice 60 years ago, but new technologies like AI are changing this. AI helps reduce animal use by analyzing data to predict human reactions to medicines. Though we cannot stop animal research completely soon, efforts to reduce their use are progressing, leading to better human-centered science.
12. Why other methods should be considered other than animals?
A. Animals affect human health. B. Animals failed to help basic science.
C. Animals are losing their role in science. D. Using animals for research has challenges.
13. What is the function of paragraph 3?
A. To support the idea with facts. B. To describe an animal experiment.
C. To explain the effect of medicine. D. To introduce a new scientific finding.
14. Which of the following is included in the “three Rs” principle?
A. Stopping animal tests. B. Choosing animal methods first.
C. Using more animals in experiments. D. Making tests less hurtful to animals.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The Role of AI in Animal Research. B. Making Non-animal Research Possible.
C. Passing New Laws For Animal Research. D. Ending Animal Testing in Research Now.
D 13. A 14. D 15. B

Second, some blind boxes have low-quality or fake (虚假) products, which is a waste of money.
Nicole Kleinstreuer from the US National Institutes of Health said “We’re not 150-pound rats.” She leads a program for other animal research methods.
