14. What are the speakers talking about?
A. The weather forecast. B. The woman’s work. C. The woman’s study.
15. Where did the woman get her first job?
A. In the BBC. B. In a radio station. C. At a local weather center.

B 15. C 16. A 17. C
M: How did you become a weather forecaster, and when did you start doing TV forecasts?
W: Well, I studied physics for four years at university, then spent six months on a weather training course. Then I worked at the local weather center for a while, until about five years ago I got a job with the BBC doing weather forecasts. I actually started doing them on television three years ago, after two years of giving radio forecasts. I really enjoy the work.
M: What do you like best about it?
W: I feel I’m helping those who need to know what the weather’s going to be like. Sometimes we get letters from farmers, thanking us for what we’re doing. And I know how important the forecast is to people going out in small boats, because my favorite hobby is sailing.
M: Does it make many people change their plans, or decide not to travel?
W: Oh yes. Those flying small airplanes. And people planning journeys by road want to know if there’s going to be fog or heavy snow so they can set out earlier. Or not go at all, if conditions are really bad.
M: So with all these people depending on you, the forecast has to be right, doesn’t it?
W: Yes, and these days we normally get it right for the following day around 85% of the time. We have weather balloons and photos taken from space, and of course computers to make the forecast more accurate.
M: All that must make your job a lot easier.
W: Certainly it helps you produce more accurate forecasts, but it also creates a huge amount of extra work for us. You only appear on TV for a few minutes every day, but you spend hours studying all this information and preparing the forecasts.

W:Today in our Fashion program, I’d like to introduce a famous middle school student. She looks like any other school girl, fresh-faced and full of life. Sarah Thomas is looking forward to the challenge of her new A-level course. But unlike her school friends, 16-year-old Sarah is not spending half-term resting. Instead, she is earning £6,500 a day as a model in New York.
Sarah has been told that she could be Britain’s new supermodel, earning a million dollars in the next year. Her father Peter, 44, wants her to give up school to model full-time. But Sarah, who has taken part in shows with top models, wants to prove that she has brains as well as beauty. She is determined to carry on with her education.
She has turned down invitations to star at shows in Milan and Paris later this autumn in order to concentrate on her studies. After school she plans to model full-time for one year before going to university to get a degree in engineering.
Sarah’s dad thinks she should take the opportunity now. But Sarah thinks at the moment, school comes first. Modeling is fun but the lifestyle is a little unreal. She doesn’t want to have nothing else to rely on when she can’t model any more.

In the Eaton fire in January, it wasn’t just Clark and her husband who lost a beloved home in Altadena, where they had deep roots — so deep that Clark is a highly active member of the Altadena Renters Union. The couple also have Ginger, a “very good dog” that constrained their ability to first new housing. Some landlords directly refused to rent the house to renters with pets, while other demanded high pet deposits (押金) or monthly pet rents that made already-sky-high pricing unsustainable.
There’s not a world in which we can go someplace without our dog. She is part of our family, says Clark, who goes on to explain she got lucky, comparatively. “After a brief time in a hotel, I, my husband, and Ginger found a home in Pomona, 40 minutes away from Altadena, which is still home to me.”
Clark is also a strong supporter of renter unions being a possible solution to this issue, as they allow renters to build strength, unity, and connections. “You’re a member of your community, and you shouldn’t be treated like a second-class citizen just because you don’t own property,” she says.
Being a renter doesn’t make residents less engaged. Clark has served on the Altadena Library Board since 2018 and explains that the library is playing an active role in supporting the community after the wildfires, including setting up wifi hotspots, distributing hygiene kits (卫生用品), and working with L. A. County to provide services to kids displaced by closed schools.
“There will be another crisis,” Clark says, “Whatever that next crisis is, attention will shift, and all the folks in Altadena are still going to be dealing with this... this is going to be a really long road.”
24. What does the underlined word “constrained” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Limited. B. Switched. C. Assessed. D. Demonstrated.
25. What does Clark’s statement in paragraph 2 suggest?
A. She feels no connection to Pomona. B. She plans to return to Altadena soon.
C. She maintains emotional ties to Altadena. D. She regrets leaving Altadena with her dog.
26. What does the text imply about renters’ engagement in Altadena?
A. They are just as involved as homeowners.
B. They are too busy with work to participate.
C. They rely entirely on renter unions to speak for them.
D. They mainly care about issues that directly affect them.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. More fires are unavoidable. B. Schools may be closed.
C. Rebuilding the community will take years. D. Crises will change but struggles remain.
A 25. C 26. A 27. D

根据划线词所在句“The couple also have Ginger, a “very good dog” that constrained their ability to first new housing. (这对夫妇还有金吉尔,一条“非常好的狗”,它constrained了他们寻找新住房的能力)”和下文“Some landlords directly refused to rent the house to renters with pets, while other demanded high pet deposits (押金) or monthly pet rents... (一些房东直接拒绝将房子租给有宠物的租客,而另一些人则要求高额的宠物押金或每月宠物租金……)”可知,因为狗的存在,他们找新房子的能力受到了阻碍或限制。故划线词constrained意为“限制”,与A项“Limited”意思一致。故选A项。
根据第二段中“After a brief time in a hotel, I, my husband, and Ginger found a home in Pomona, 40 minutes away from Altadena, which is still home to me. (在酒店住了一小段时间后,我、丈夫和金格在离阿尔塔迪纳40分钟车程的波莫纳找到了新家,阿尔塔迪纳仍然是我的家。)”可知,克拉克仍然将阿尔塔迪纳视为自己的家,由此可推知,她对阿尔塔迪纳仍有感情。故选C项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Being a renter doesn’t make residents less engaged. Clark has served on the Altadena Library Board since 2018 and explains that the library is playing an active role in supporting the community after the wildfires, including setting up wifi hotspots, distributing hygiene kits (卫生用品), and working with L. A. County to provide services to kids displaced by closed schools. (成为租房者并不意味着居民参与度降低。克拉克自2018年起就担任阿尔塔迪纳图书馆董事会成员,她解释说,图书馆在野火过后积极支持社区,包括设立无线网络热点、分发卫生用品,以及与洛杉矶县合作,为因学校关闭而流离失所的儿童提供服务。)”可推知,文本暗示了阿尔塔迪纳的租房者和房主一样积极参与社区事务。故选A项。
根据最后一段““There will be another crisis,” Clark says, “Whatever that next crisis is, attention will shift, and all the folks in Altadena are still going to be dealing with this... this is going to be a really long road.” (克拉克说:“还会有另一场危机,不管下一场危机是什么,人们的注意力都会转移,阿尔塔迪纳的所有人仍要面对这个问题……这将是一条非常漫长的道路。”)”可推知,克拉克认为,危机总会变化,但灾后社区的重建和人们面临的困难将是长期存在的。故选D项。
C
My son just completed high school, and his departure for college marks a significant change for me. Among the things I’ll miss most are his lessons in teenage slang (俚语), which has offered me an accidental and useful portrait of how he and his generation see the world.
The primary value of slang has been to create linguistic markers, a way to set you apart from other people. The terms change over time, but the meanings typically don’t — one generation’s “cool” becomes another’s “dope.”
Members of my son’s generation have a vastly superior approach to slang. They have invented a language that responds to the new and distinct reality they face, a society characterized by collapsing institutions, erosions (削弱) in trust and a loss of faith in a shared sense of meaning.
“Mid,” for example, in my son’s usage, describes things that are average or slightly below. You can’t really complain about them, but they produce no joy. Everything in Starbucks and airports falls into the category of “mid.”
“Glazed” has a similarly impressive precision, indicating the act of positively spinning a judgment on reality rather than complete lying. It is the perfect description of the way social media works, with everything taking on an artificially positive, unreal and not entirely trustworthy look. For example, beach photos on social media might make a destination look like paradise, yet they rarely show the crowded shores or bad weather that are part of the reality.
My favorite slang word is “based,” often used to express agreement when someone states a controversial opinion. “Canada should join the United States,” one might say, to which someone else might reply, “Based.” To my ear, “based” is a perfect word to describe the informational chaos we inhabit.
Slang has brought my son and me closer. It’s taught me that the current crop of teenagers created a language to describe the flawed reality we’ve abandoned them to, and in doing so they’ve proved themselves less misguided and more innovative than we were.
28. What does teenage slang reveal about young people?
A. Their need to fit in with peers.
B. Their desire to outdo older generations.
C. Their aim to challenge social norms.
D. Their response to the problematic reality.
29. Which comment on a crowded park reflects the underlined word “glazed”?
A. “What a disaster!” B. “Not crowded at all.”
C. “A wonderful getaway!” D. “At least we found a spot.”
30. What is the author’s attitude toward teenage slang?
A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Appreciative. D. Doubtful.
31. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Teenagers’ Fondness of Nonsense Words
B. Modern Slang Tells Us about Youth Culture
C. The Impact of Teen Slang on Social Relations
D. Teens Have Invented a Language for the World
D 29. C 30. C 31. D
根据第三段“Members of my son’s generation have a vastly superior approach to slang. They have invented a language that responds to the new and distinct reality they face, a society characterized by collapsing institutions, erosions (削弱) in trust and a loss of faith in a shared sense of meaning.(我儿子这一代的成员对俚语的处理方式要优越得多。他们发明了一种语言来回应他们所面临的新的和独特的现实,一个以机构崩溃、信任削弱和对共同意义失去信心为特征的社会。)”可知,青少年俚语揭示了年轻人对有问题的现实的反应。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“‘Glazed’ has a similarly impressive precision, indicating the act of positively spinning a judgment on reality rather than complete lying. It is the perfect description of the way social media works, with everything taking on an artificially positive, unreal and not entirely trustworthy look. For example, beach photos on social media might make a destination look like paradise, yet they rarely show the crowded shores or bad weather that are part of the reality.(“Glazed”也有同样令人印象深刻的精确性,它表示对现实进行积极粉饰,而不是彻头彻尾地撒谎。这是对社交媒体工作方式的完美描述,一切都呈现出一种人为的积极、不真实和不完全可信的样子。例如,社交媒体上的海滩照片可能会让一个目的地看起来像天堂,但它们很少展示作为现实一部分的拥挤的海岸或恶劣的天气。)”可知,对一个拥挤的公园的评论“一次美妙的度假!”反映了“glazed”这个词的含义,即对现实做出积极判断的行为,而不是完全说谎。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Slang has brought my son and me closer. It’s taught me that the current crop of teenagers created a language to describe the flawed reality we’ve abandoned them to, and in doing so they’ve proved themselves less misguided and more innovative than we were.(俚语让我和儿子更亲近了。它让我明白,现在的这一代青少年创造了一种语言来描述我们抛弃给他们的有缺陷的现实,他们这样做证明了他们比我们更少被误导,更有创新精神。)”可知,作者对青少年俚语的态度是欣赏的。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“My son just completed high school, and his departure for college marks a significant change for me. Among the things I’ll miss most are his lessons in teenage slang (俚语), which has offered me an accidental and useful portrait of how he and his generation see the world.(我儿子刚高中毕业,他上大学对我来说是一个重大的变化。我最怀念的是他给我上的青少年俚语课,这让我意外而有用地了解了他和他这一代人如何看待这个世界。)”以及最后一段“Slang has brought my son and me closer. It’s taught me that the current crop of teenagers created a language to describe the flawed reality we’ve abandoned them to, and in doing so they’ve proved themselves less misguided and more innovative than we were.(俚语让我和儿子更亲近了。它让我明白,现在的这一代青少年创造了一种语言来描述我们抛弃给他们的有缺陷的现实,他们这样做证明了他们比我们更少被误导,更有创新精神。)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述了青少年创造了一种语言来描述他们所面临的现实,作者认为这证明了他们比上一代人更少被误导,更有创新精神,因此D项“Teens Have Invented a Language for the World(青少年为世界发明了一种语言)”是本文的最佳标题。故选D项。
D
About 20 million people die each year due to cardiovascular (心血管的) disease. Luckily, a team of researchers from the University of Nottingham in the UK have developed a machine learning algorithm (算法) that can predict your likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke as well as any doctor.
The American Heart Association (AHA) has developed a series of guidelines for estimating a patient’s cardiovascular risk which is based on eight factors including age, cholesterol level and blood pressure. On average, this system correctly guesses a person’s risk at a rate of 72.8 percent.
That’s pretty accurate, but Stephen Weng and his team set about to make it better. They built four computer learning algorithms, and then fed them data from 378,256 patients in the United Kingdom. The systems first used around 295,267 records to generate their internal predictive models. Then they used the remaining records to test and refine them.
The algorithms results significantly outperformed the AHA guidelines, ranging from 74.5 to 76.4 percent accuracy. The neural (神经的) network algorithm tested highest, beating the existing guidelines by 7.6 percent while raising 1.6 percent fewer false alarms.
Out of the 83,000 patient set of test records, this system could have saved 355 extra lives. In addition, the AI systems identified a number of risk factors and predictors not covered in the existing guidelines, like severe mental illness and the consumption of oral corticosteroids “There are a lot of interactions in biological systems,” Weng told Science. “That’s the reality of the human body. What computer science allows us to do is explore those associations.”
This is where AI can transform preventative medicine. By using vast datasets to uncover complex, non-linear risk interactions beyond human analysis, these algorithms can enable earlier, more precise interventions. This represents a significant step toward a future where data-driven predictions fundamentally reshape proactive healthcare, moving beyond standardized checklists to personalized risk assessment.
32. How did the researchers get the findings?
A. By analyzing patient data. B. By testing 20 million people.
C. By asking doctors for opinions. D. By following the guidelines of AHA.
33. What is an advantage of the network algorithm compared with the previous system?
A. Lower cost. B. Simpler operation. C. Wider applicability. D. Higher accuracy.
34. What can be implied in Weng’s words in paragraph 5?
A. Human bodies are too complex to study. B. AI can help explore body interactions.
C. Doctors know a little about our bodies. D. There are many algorithms about medicine.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Algorithms are mainly for treatment. B. AI will replace human doctors in future.
C. Standardized checklists are still the best. D. AI’s potential in preventative medicine.
A 33. D 34. B 35. D

When Mary entered the south pole penguin (企鹅) Research Lab,she saw her twin brother Tom gently petting a penguin in his arms. As kids of the lab scientists, Mary and Tom often observed the emperor penguins that were studied to understand how they adapted to extreme temperatures, which might aid human survival.
“We’re thirteen years old, Tom. It’s time to grow up and stop playing with the lab penguins, ”said Mary as she started cleaning. “They’re research animals, not pets.” “But the birds listen to me!” insisted Tom, his breath forming a cloud in the freezing air.
Suddenly, an alarm rang out and red lights flashed, signaling a problem. The kids rushed over to look into it. She checked the habitat monitor and found that the temperature had gone down a lot. “The heater must be broken!”
Mary quickly sent a message to their parents’ research team, who were all conducting outdoor studies. “It’s freezing and let’s get out of here!” Mary warned. They ran to the lab’s heavy metal door, only to find the door sealed shut by thick ice. With the adults away and no way to escape, the kids would have to deal with the freezing conditions until help arrived.
Time dragged as Mary and Tom anxiously waited. The increasing cold caused them to shake. “I wonder what emperor penguins do in extreme cold, since they stay in the pole all winter instead of going somewhere warmer,” asked Mary. “They huddle (挤作一团),” Tom answered. “They huddle together tightly so that the birds in the middle will be warm enough.” “What about the ones on the edge?” Mary asked. “They push their way towards the center, and then move back out to the edge, and struggle back again. Scientists in the early 21st century recorded it.” He replied as he stared at the large crowd of the penguins in the lab.

Possible version :
In a flash, Tom had an idea to keep warm. He shouted with joy, “Let’s copy the penguins and join them!” Mary hesitated with concern that the birds wouldn’t accept them. Tom smiled with confidence while approaching the birds which had already crowded together due to the temperature. Slowly and gently, he reached out his hands and stroke them with great affection. Though alarmed at first, the penguins recognized him and allowed him into their huddle. Mary quickly followed his lead. The two kids squeezed their way from the edge of the crowd to the center and returned to the edge with the flow just as the birds did. As warmth spread through their bodies, they grew confident they could survive until rescue came.
About two hours later, their parents rushed into the lab, screaming out the kids’ names. Before Tom and Mary could make any response, their parents were amazed to find the kids tightly surrounded by a huge group of penguins, safe and sound. Their mother check for any signs of frostbite or injury and their father asked in surprise, “You were using the penguins’ way to keep warm?” The two kids exchanged a glance and Tom proudly told their parents that they learned from the penguins. As the room warmed up, the penguins slowly walked away. The parents looked at each other proudly — their children didn’t just wait for help, but found a smart way to survive by working with nature.

26 What does the text imply about renters’ engagement in Altadena?
A. They are just as involved as homeowners.
B. They are too busy with work to participate.
C. They rely entirely on renter unions to speak for them.
D. They mainly care about issues that directly affect them.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A More fires are unavoidable. B. Schools may be closed.
C. Rebuilding the community will take years. D. Crises will change but struggles remain.

D. Teens Have Invented a Language for the World
A Human bodies are too complex to study.

___37___ That changed after the Industrial Revolution. During the 20th century, many ideas that were used by factories and big businesses were put into action on farms. This helped some farms grow larger and produce more.
The organic movement was started to get back to the old traditional ways of farming. Why? Many believe the chemicals and pesticides used in modern farming can be harmful to your health. ___38___ And those who support the organic movement also point to its benefits for the environment.
Have you ever compared organic and non-organic foods at the grocery store? If so, you know that organic food tend to cost more. This happens for many reasons. Organic farming produces fewer crops. ___39___ Additionally, organic farms spend more money taking care of the animals they raise. These and other factors drive the cost of organic food up.
Is organic food worth the extra cost? Some people believe it is. They may think it tastes better or just prefer to eat food that has not been grown using chemicals. ___40___They are still trying to find a major difference between organic and non-organic food in terms of safety, nutrition, or taste. Still, others argue that the environmental benefits of organic food make it worth the price.
A. Have you ever wondered what that means?
B. The cost of production is also usually higher.
C. For most of history, almost all food was organic.
D. Many people are willing to pay more for organic food.
E. Some also think organic foods are naturally more nutritious.
F. Are you wondering if organic food is right for you?
