I’ll never forget my sister’s voice shaking when she called me that Sunday evening last year. “Daddy collapsed,” she said. “He’s in the hospital.” My father was in critical condition back home in Nigeria. At that moment, my world fell apart. I paced my tiny apartment in Florida, wishing I could go home immediately. My family needed me, and I felt powerless to help. For weeks, every phone message sent my heart racing. My grades slipped.
My family had sacrificed a lot to help me pursue my goal of studying abroad at a world-class university. When I received an offer from the University of South Florida I was excited. But reality soon kicked in — I could hardly afford the high expenses. Just as I was about to turn down the offer, my sister learned of my dilemma and my family rallied to support me.
When I landed in Florida, I carried the weight of their hopes with me. Knowing how air pollution had ruined my community, I chose a project on “carbon sink”. Whenever I was tempted to settle for “good enough”, I heard my father’s voice urging me on. Then, a year into my program, came the news that he was ill.
A couple weeks later, one of my professors noticed something was wrong. For the first time, I told someone in my professional world what was happening. He listened without judgment, offered encouragement, and connected me with the university counseling center. Those counseling sessions steadied me. My friends did, too, dragging me to the library so I wouldn’t feel lonely. They reminded me that I wasn’t carrying this weight alone.
Eventually, my father’s health stabilized. Looking back, that season taught me lessons I’ll hold forever. I learned to ask for help without shame and lean on my support system. That perspective keeps me grounded and pushes me to give my best even on the hardest days.
4. What does the underlined word “rallied” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Recovered. B. Hesitated. C. Refused. D. United.
5. Why did the author choose the project on “carbon sink”?
A. His father urged him to do that. B. He aimed to help reduce air pollution.
C. It’s a key national research project. D. It could benefit his community work.
6. How did the professor and friends help the author?
A. By providing academic guidance. B. By assisting him financially.
C. By offering emotional support. D. By telling him the meaning of life.
7. What message does the author want to convey?
A. Perseverance is the key to getting stronger.
B. Personal determination is a reliable solution.
C. Family stability is the base for academic success.
D. External support is as important as internal drive.

Just over half (51%) of published novelists in the UK say that artificial intelligence is likely to entirely replace their work, a new University of Cambridge study has found.59% of novelists say they know their work has been used to train AI Large Language Models (LLMs) without permission or payment. Most (85%) novelists expect their future income to be driven down by AI.
The study, led by Dr. Clementine Collett, surveyed 258 novelists to estimate how AI is viewed and used in the world of British fiction. Genre authors are considered to be the most easily replaceable, according to the report, with 66% of all those surveyed listing romance authors as “extremely threatened”, followed closely by writers of thrillers (61%) and crime (60%).
Despite these concerns, overall attitude in UK fiction is not anti-AI, with 80% of participants in the survey agreeing that AI offers benefits to parts of society. In fact, most novelists use AI in their writing process, mainly for “non-creative” tasks such as information search.
Novelists feel copyright (版权) laws have not been respected since the emergence of generative AI. They call for respecting copyright and fair payment for the use of their work. Many warn of a potential loss of originality in fiction, as well as the loss of trust between writers and readers if AI use is not public. Some worry that suspicion of AI use could damage their reputation.
Writers fear AI may weaken the deep human connection between writers and readers at a time when reading is already at historically low levels, particularly among the next generation: only a third of UK children say they enjoy reading in their free time. Many novelists want to see more AI-free creative writing on the school curriculum, and government-backed initiatives aimed at finding new voices to counter risks of “homogeneity” (同质化) in fiction brought about by generative AI.
8. What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1?
A. Novelists’ income has stopped growing.
B. Novelists fear AI may change their work.
C. AI brings unexpected benefits to novelists.
D. Novelists actively resist the application of AI.
9. What is the majority view on AI in UK fiction?
A. It can improve creativity capability. B. Using AI for writing is totally irresponsible.
C. It has no practical value for society. D. It serves as an aid in the writing process.
10. What is the novelists’ opinion regarding their work being used to train AI?
A. AI training should be banned completely.
B. AI’s innovation level should be enhanced.
C. It should respect their rights and interests.
D. Paying high fees is their top requirement.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Will AI Put Novelists Out of Work? B. How Do Novelists Use AI Tools?
C. Will AI Reshape Our Everyday Life? D. How Will AI Impact Human Creativity?
D
It’s no secret that microplastics have already come into our lives. They can stem from daily tasks like cooking and cleaning. Now, research is pointing to the previously unexplored impact of dishwashing on microplastic pollution.
A new study has revealed that washing plastic containers in a dishwasher releases plastic particles (颗粒), which proceed to enter wastewater. Although the study confirmed that the release of microplastics in dishwashers is relatively low compared to other sources of microplastic pollution, it could still impose consequences on the environment.
The study found that a single dishwasher cycle with a full load of common plastic items could release about 920,000 microplastic particles into wastewater. This ultimately adds up to 33 million particles per household per year globally. Although this number may sound frightening, this plastic mass only equates to “about a quarter of the weight of a grain of rice,” according to a statement on the study.
Regardless, microplastics from dishwashers eventually end up in a wastewater treatment plant, which can remove more than 90 percent of microplastics from wastewater. However, the filters (过滤器) here are not perfect, as millions of microplastics can still slip through and adversely affect the environment.
Even though dishwashers may not be the biggest concern in terms of microplastic pollution, the fact that millions of households regularly use them increases the environmental risks. However, strategies to limit microplastic pollution from dishwashing and other household tasks have been suggested. Filters fitted on dishwashers to catch microplastics before they enter wastewater could be a possibility in the future.
“Removing this pollutant before it can enter the environment is better than taking costly measures after it has already been released,” said author Elvis Okofio, a research fellow at the University of Queensland. “Small changes can help reduce the global burden of plastic pollution.”
12. What can we learn about dishwashing from paragraph 1?
A. It has grown more complicated. B. It’s a source of microplastic pollution.
C. Its plastic pollution is out of control. D. It unexpectedly pollutes our kitchens.
13. What can be inferred about microplastics from dishwashers?
A. Their total amount is relatively low.
B. They hardly affect the environment.
C. They pose a huge threat to human health.
D. They contain a small number of particles.
14. What is a problem of the wastewater treatment plant?
A. It fails to perfect its management. B. It does not have enough filters.
C. It lets many microplastics escape. D. It can’t remove microplastics from water.
15. What is Okofio’s suggestion for limiting microplastic pollution?
A. Improving filter technology. B. Stopping using plastic containers.
C. Reducing the use of water. D. Preventing release from the source.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My sister Clara and I had always shared everything — from our favorite books to our biggest dreams. We were best friends, until we disagreed about Grandma’s old violin.
That violin was special. Grandma used to play it every night, filling our house with beautiful music and happy memories. Last winter, before she passed away, she gave it to us. “This is for both of you,” she said, holding the shiny wooden instrument. “Let its music remind you that family matters most.”
Things got complicated when I moved to my own apartment. “I’d like to put it in my new living room,” I told Clara one day. She looked upset. “But I have my music school audition (试演) next week,”she said, her voice excited but nervous. “My teacher said I need a good violin. Grandma would want me to play it!”
We started arguing our voices getting louder. “You?” I said angrily. “You can never keep your music papers in order! That violin needs to be taken care of properly.”
She looked really hurt. “You just want to hang it on the wall like decoration!” she shouted back. “You don’t really care about Grandma’s memory. You just want something nice for your apartment!”
Without thinking, I took the violin case and left, slamming the door behind me with a loud bang. I heard something break inside—probably the music stand she loved since she was little.
Two weeks went by without us speaking. Then, while cleaning out my closet, I found Grandma’s special box. Under some old concert tickets was a letter for Clara. “My dear Clara,” Grandma had written, “if you’re reading this, you must be following your music dream. Play this violin with love. And please tell your sister—no object is worth damaging your close relationship.”
The words made me think deeply. I remembered how happy Clara was when she got into music school, how her face lit up when she talked about her dreams — dreams I had been too selfish to support.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I felt so guilty for hurting my dearest sister.

C Family stability is the base for academic success.
D. External support is as important as internal drive.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. D

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据第一段“Just over half (51%) of published novelists in the UK say that artificial intelligence is likely to entirely replace their work, a new University of Cambridge study has found.(剑桥大学的一项新研究发现,英国略超一半(51%)的已出版小说家表示,人工智能有可能完全取代他们的工作。)”可知,第一段指出了英国小说家担忧人工智能可能取代其工作、拉低收入等,即害怕人工智能改变他们的工作现状这一现象。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Despite these concerns, overall attitude in UK fiction is not anti-AI, with 80% of participants in the survey agreeing that AI offers benefits to parts of society. In fact, most novelists use AI in their writing process, mainly for “non-creative” tasks such as information search.(尽管存在这些担忧,英国小说界的整体态度并非反人工智能,80%的调查参与者认为人工智能为社会部分领域带来益处。事实上,大多数小说家在写作过程中使用人工智能,主要用于信息搜索等“非创造性”任务。)”可知,英国小说界对人工智能的主流看法是其能在写作过程中起到辅助作用。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Novelists feel copyright (版权) laws have not been respected since the emergence of generative AI. They call for respecting copyright and fair payment for the use of their work.(小说家们认为,自生成式人工智能出现以来,版权法未得到尊重。他们呼吁尊重版权,并为其作品的使用支付合理报酬。)”可知,对于作品被用于训练人工智能,小说家们认为这一行为应尊重他们的权益。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Just over half (51%) of published novelists in the UK say that artificial intelligence is likely to entirely replace their work, a new University of Cambridge study has found.(剑桥大学的一项最新研究发现,在英国已出版作品的小说家当中,略超半数(51%)的人认为,人工智能有可能完全取代他们的工作。)”及全文围绕英国小说家对人工智能的担忧、对AI的实际使用、维权诉求和相关呼吁展开可知,本文核心探讨人工智能是否会让小说家失业这一问题。所以A项Will AI Put Novelists Out of Work?(人工智能会让小说家失业吗?)符合文意。故选A项。

C Reducing the use of water. D. Preventing release from the source.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

第二节 (满分25分)
We started arguing, our voices getting louder.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I felt so guilty for hurting my dearest sister. Grandma’s words echoed clearly in my ears: no object was worth damaging our close relationship. I regretted being so selfish, only thinking about putting the violin as a decoration in my apartment, while ignoring Clara’s music dream and her deep love for Grandma. The violin was a gift full of warm memories, not a thing to argue for. I gently wiped the dust off the violin case, my heart heavy with remorse, and made up my mind to apologize to her sincerely and give her the violin she deserved.
My heart beat fast as I brought the violin to Clara’s room. She looked up in surprise when she saw me, her eyes holding a faint sadness. I handed her the case softly and said, “I’m so sorry, Clara. I was wrong. Grandma wanted you to play it with love.” Tears welled up in her eyes, and she pulled me into a tight hug. Later, she played Grandma’s favorite melody, and the soft music filled the room, just like the warm days we spent with Grandma together. At that moment, I knew our bond was stronger than ever.
