Krishna Mano, an 11th grader at City High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, recently returned from a trip to Washington D. C. where he received an award for an app he created to serve as an online delivery service to support local farmers.
“Krishi”, the word for agriculture in Sanskrit and Hindi, is the name of the app which Mano says began as a school project in 10th grade, and links his Indian heritage with a service he created to address a need in the community.
When visiting the Fulton Street Farmers Market, he said he spoke with local farmers who expressed a common concern of having to waste produce that could not be sold in time. This led to the development of Krishi to create a new way for farmers to sell their produce.
“The first is the farmer. So they create an account, and they create their farm as a platform (平台) online and then they can update their inventory (库存清单) and list different produce that they have,” said Mano. “The consumer can see all these nearby farms, and then order anything from those farms.” Similar to Uber Eats and DoorDash, drivers who sign up through the app will receive any incoming orders in their area, see how much they can make and then complete the order.
The app is still in its pilot phase (阶段). Mano said local farmers who have joined the service so far have viewed it as a novel idea.
Having submitted (提交) Krishi for a competition back in the fall, he received a call saying that he was selected as the winner and earned a trip to Washington D. C. over spring break. “I think a lot of students just lack the confidence today to put their ideas forward, and to be honest, I did as well at the start of the project, but working with my teachers on making this an actual app definitely showed kids are capable of anything that we put our minds to,” said Mano.
4. Why did Mano go to Washington D. C.?
A. To support local agriculture. B. To attend a science competition.
C. To collect a prize for his invention. D. To develop an online delivery app.
5. What does the underlined part “a need” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Farmers’ need to sell extra produce.
B. Raising awareness about agriculture.
C. Teaching farmers app-related knowledge.
D. Consumers’ need to have lower-priced produce.
6. Why does the author mention Uber Eats and DoorDash in paragraph 4?
A. To discuss the practicality of apps.
B. To show the benefits of online delivery.
C. To explain the delivery process of Mano’s app.
D. To highlight the challenges faced by delivery drivers.
7. What prevents students from developing their ideas according to Mano?
A. Lack of real-world experience. B. Insufficient self-confidence.
C. Fear of teachers’ criticism. D. Limited access to projects.
C
For the past two years, students in the Lawrenceville School's biology class have translated their classroom learning into hands-on educational experiences for local children. Last spring, they led interactive science activities for 45 students at Johnson Park elementary School in Princeton, N. J., and this year, they hosted a similar event for young visitors at the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. In addition to these events, students have presented their projects to kids at a local children's center.
Science teacher Ilana Saxe, who leads the project, said the idea first came to her during a 2023 visit with her family to the New Jersey State Museum. “I thought, ‘wow, it would be really cool for the students in my advanced biology course to somehow create something for local facilities like the museum,’” she recalled.
Last spring, for the Johnson Park elementary School activity, 17-year-old Mable Spritzer chose to teach children about how fish are affected by overfishing, including selected species' eating and reproductive (繁殖的) habits.
“My activity included a tablecloth designed like the ocean and felt pieces (毛毡片) that represented four species: starfish, sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, and rays. To model overfishing, I asked the children to remove every felt sea creature except for one. To model overpopulation, I asked the children to place the sea creatures, close together, all over the sea floor,” Spritzer explained.
She then asked the children to provide their definition. “Often, the children were able to show overpopulation and overfishing with the felt pieces, state that both scenarios (场景) were terrible, and provide a simple definition of overpopulation and overfishing,” Spritzer said.
Saxe hopes the project will broaden students' understanding of what a future in science can look like. “I want students to see that there are so many ways to engage with science beyond going into medicine or research,” she said.
8. What does the Lawrenceville School's educational project mainly focus on?
A. Raising funds for local children's centers.
B. Improving children's communicative skills.
C. Engaging students in teaching kids biology.
D. Preparing students for national science fairs.
9. What inspired Saxe to launch the project?
A. A passion for ocean protection. B. A family visit to a local museum.
C. An invitation from a local facility. D. A recommendation from her school.
10. Which of the following best describes Spritzer's class?
A. It advocated group work. B. It involved high-tech models.
C. It highlighted artistic expression. D. It encouraged hands-on learning.
11. What do Saxe's words in the last paragraph show?
A. Her expectation. B. Her concern. C. Her doubt. D. Her curiosity.
D
AI models lack human senses like smell and touch, limiting their understanding of concepts such as flowers or humor. While advanced models show impressive language skills, their understanding nevertheless differs fundamentally from humans due to missing sensory experiences.
Researchers at the Ohio State University compared humans and AI models in understanding nearly 4,500 words. Both groups rated each word for a variety of aspects, such as the level of emotional arousal (唤醒) they bring to mind, or their links to senses and physical interaction with different parts of the body. It turns out that people and AI have a similar conceptual map of words that don't relate to interactions with the outside world, but differ greatly when words are linked to senses and physical actions.
The problem lies in AI models’ text-only training. Models trained on both images and text showed closer consistency with human responses. As researchers note: “Multi-modal training brings greater benefits than expected.” This suggests future AI models may need a robot body to gain such experience.
Philip Feldman at the University of Maryland says that giving AI models a robot body and exposing them to sensorimotor (感觉运动的) input would probably result in a jump in ability, but that we will have to be very careful about how this is done, given the risk of robots causing physical harm to people around them.
Avoiding such risks would mean adding limits to robot actions, or only using soft robots that can cause no harm for training, says Feldman — but that would have its own downsides.
“This is going to mess up their view of the world,” says Feldman. “One of the things they would learn is that you can bounce off (弹开) things, because they have little mass. Put such deep understanding that has to do with physical contact in a real robot with mass and you would have robots believing that they could just crash into each other at full speed.”
12. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Sensory gaps limit AI models’ understanding.
B. Sensory training expands AI models’ capabilities.
C. AI models fail to understand complex human ideas.
D. AI models are better than humans at language skills.
13. How did researchers compare humans and AI models in the study?
A. By assessing their vocabulary.
B. By comparing their writing styles.
C. By testing their performance in a game.
D. By contrasting their interpretation of words.
14. What can be inferred about equipping AI models with a robot body?
A. It decreases their potential risks.
B. It boosts their learning competence.
C. It improves their ability to innovate.
D. It increases their chances of self-recovery.
15. What is Feldman mainly worried about regarding robots?
A. They may not move fast enough. B. They will lack basic emotions.
C They might misjudge their strength. D. They could fail to follow orders.

Choking on food is common in daily life, and we usually have others around to help when it happens. However, few of us know how to handle it if we choke alone. ____16____
The standard first aid for a choking person is the Heimlich maneuver, which requires a J-shaped inward and upward push on the abdomen (腹部) to produce pressure, forcing out the foreign object and causing a cough. If you choke alone, stay calm, repeat this movement with everyday items like a desk, counter, or chair. Bend forward to press the object’s edge firmly against your stomach, then lean in and use your body weight to push continually. ____17____ However, this is effective and reliable if you’re choking alone.
Medical experts confirm this self-help approach works. However, they warn that many people can hardly put enough pressure on themselves. ____18____ After all, it’s important to seek help by any possible means.
Choking often causes intense panic— one person described it as “the most frightening thing” because of the feeling of something stuck in the throat. ____19____ Thus, you may stay calm and act fast in an emergency. Repeating this approach helps build muscle memory and remember steps. This ensures you can respond naturally and effectively if you choke alone.
____20____ A related video shared online got over 1.5 million views, 68,000+ likes, and 845 comments. Many users praised its usefulness, with one saying, “You just saved my life” and another sharing, “I’ve done this. It was terrifying but successful!” For those looking to prepare for unexpected choking alone, this practical and proven method is an essential safety tool.
A. The hard edge may cause discomfort.
B. Practice this self-rescue method regularly.
C. You can also put the chair on your stomach.
D. Here is a way to prevent you from choking.
E It is an urgent situation that needs self-rescue skills.
F. Even so, you can still give this self-rescue method a try.
G. The method has received wide attention and positive feedback.

Philip Feldman at the University of Maryland says that giving AI models a robot body and exposing them to sensorimotor (感觉运动) input would probably result in a jump in ability, but that we will have to be very careful about how this is done, given the risk of robots causing physical harm to people around them.
C. They might misjudge their strength.

Have a nice visit, and may our planting garden bring you a wonderful experience.
【答案】Distinguished friends,
Welcome to our class garden! It’s my great honor to be your guide today and introduce this special place to you.
In our garden, we grow a variety of plants, including tomatoes, carrots, green vegetables and some beautiful flowers. We take turns to look after them after class — watering, weeding and fertilizing regularly to make sure they grow well. Everyone in the class participates actively and treats these plants like our good friends.
Through this experience, we not only learn how to plant and take care of plants, but also understand the value of hard work. It also strengthens our teamwork and brings us great joy when we harvest the fruits and vegetables we grow ourselves.
