We still always hoped that somebody had taken him to be a pet, but you just never knew.” “It was horrible. My daughter Bronwyn would try to find Thor everywhere, which had been a Christmas present for her. Even while watching TV programmes, she would say, ‘Oh, look! That dog looks like Thor!’” Grace said. Then the family moved, and the hope became impossible. But one day, the phone rang. It was their former vet (兽医) in British Columbia, saying Thor was in a rescue shelter in High River, Alberta. He had been found at a work camp in the northern part of the place and taken to south by a man planning to keep him. But the man was forced to turn him over to the shelter when he couldn’t keep Thor in his rented home. Luckily, the ring on Thor’s neck gave people some information. Thor was flown to Nova Scotia last week. The family picked him up at the airport. “Thor was just lying in his box and looking down, and my daughter walked over and said, ‘Hey Thor.’ He immediately stood up, trying to greet my daughter. We let him out and he jumped on her as if he was giving her a big hug and he kissed her face. Then he sat down suddenly at her feet and rolled over for attention. He was cute.” Grace said. 1. Who helped Thor back home? A. The author. B. The former vet. C. Grace. D. Bronwyn. 2. Which of the following about Thor is true ? A. Thor came back by air. B. Thor was killed in the dogfighting. C. Thor was given to Grace by Bronwyn. D. Thor moved to British Columbia with the family. 3. How did Thor respond when seeing the family again? A. Anxious and shocked. B. Excited and joyful. C. Confused and annoyed. D. Hopeful and calm. B Millions of people go online each day only for fun or to pass the time. Besides the list of things like books, music, movies and televisions, you can now add surfing the Internet as a primary way of entertainment and passing the time. So how many people actually use the Internet today? According to some reports, about 40% of the world’s population has a connection with the Internet. That’s a huge increase from only 1% in 1995. The number of Internet users continues to grow. In 2005, the number of Internet users was more than one billion. Just five years later, that number doubled to over two billion. In 2014 that number passed the three billion mark! Today, about 75% of all Internet users live in the top 20 countries. The other 25% are spread out amongst the remaining countries. The country with the most Internet users is China with over 640 million users. The total is more than the next three countries—the United States, India and Japan—combined. Of all those billions of Internet users, a large part of users are children. From computers in schools to mobile devices, children are growing up in a connected world. Studies have shown that over 75% of children spend more than two hours each day of “screen time”, which means time is spent in front of a computer or mobile device. Too much “screen time” can be harmful to children. For example, too much screen time has been linked to many problems, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol(胆固醇) and overweight. What’s more, school-age children who use a computer more than two hours per day are more likely to have emotional, social, and attention problems. Thus, if you’re one of the 75% that spend more than two hours per day in front of a screen, consider cutting back and getting outside to enjoy the natural world. 4. How does the author prove that more and more people use the Internet? A. By explaining a rule. B. By telling an interesting story. C. By introducing an experiment. D. By showing the changes of numbers. 5. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “combined” in paragraph 4? A. put up B. taken up C. added up D. made up 6. Why does the author discuss the harmful effects of “screen time” in the last paragraph? A. To explain why “screen time” is useful. B. To stress the importance of “screen time”. C. To voice his view on less “screen time”. D. To show the difficulty of quitting “screen time”. C Children as young as 5 years old are less likely to help a person in need when other children are present, according to a new study. “Children at this age take responsibility into consideration when deciding whether to help,” explains psychological scientist and lead researcher Maria Plötner. Previous research has shown that children are generally very helpful, but few studies specifically looked at whether the presence(在场)of others affects this helping behavior. To find out, Plötner and colleagues invited 60 5-year-olds to participate(参加)in the study. The children were told that they would be choosing a picture and coloring it in. Some children colored with only the researcher present in the room, while others colored at the same time with two other children. The participants didn’t know that the other two children were actually part of the experiment and they behaved according to a script(剧本). Before the coloring started, the researcher noticed a water puddle and she cleaned it with paper towels. She left the remaining paper towels on the floor, just “in case(以防)something needs to be cleaned later.” After about half a minute of coloring time, the researcher “accidentally” knocked over her cup of colored water. She tried to hold the water back with her arms. After about 15 seconds, she looked at the water, and said “Oops” to call the children’s attention. Of all the children who did get paper towels for the researcher, those who were alone with the researcher in the room were faster to help than those who were in the room with the other two children who offered help according to the script. The study result shows that the bystander effect — a social phenomenon shown in adults — is evident in children as young as 5 years old. 7. What will the children at this age consider when deciding whether to help according to the study? A. The age. B. The responsibility. C. The script. D. The picture. 8. What is the new study mainly about? A. Whether children are helpful. B. Whether children are responsible. C. Whether the 5-year- olds will help other children. D. Whether the presence of others affects children’s helping behavior. 9. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. All the participants should be in the same room. B. All the participants behaved according to a script. C. The researcher left the remaining paper towel on the floor on purpose. D. The researcher knocked over her cup of colored water because she didn’t notice the cup. 10. Where is the text probably from? A. In a science magazine. B. In a history book. C. In a travel brochure. D. In an art magazine. 第二节(共5题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 You know you’re ready to hit the road and see the world, but you need a little help in getting out of the door.
