Vada has always enjoyed taking care of others since she was very young. Once, while carrying her baby brother, she tripped and fell. Quick-thinking, she landed on her knee, injuring herself but protecting his head. “He was fine,” she said, “I didn’t want him to have a concussion (脑震荡).” It also makes sense why she learned CPR in Girl Scouts.
Vada’s parents, Clint and Amanda, are separated but remain close friends. One day, Vada went to visit Clint, who was gardening. When he went inside, his left arm and chest began hurting. “These are signs of a heart attack,” he told Vada. He knew because he’d looked them up. Then he went to take a shower. “Maybe that’ll help.”
Even after his hot shower, Clint felt freezing cold. He lay on the sofa and Vada brought him the covers. Soon, he began sweating. Vada knew this sudden body temperature swing was a bad sign. Having left her phone at her mom’s, she put her dad’s in her pocket in case she needed to call for help.
When Clint went to the bathroom, Vada followed and waited outside. Suddenly, she heard a heavy crash. Vada became nervous at once. When she rushed in and saw him struggling to breathe on the floor, she forced herself to remain calm and called 911. She told the 911 operator she knew CPR and started performing it on her father under guidance. Vada remembered where to place her hands and how deep to push, hoping she was doing it right.
Some time later, the medical team arrived and took over. Vada called Amanda, and she just couldn’t hold back her feelings anymore and cried out loud. When Amanda arrived, one of the rescuers said, “Vada has already done the life-saving part and we’re taking it from there to do everything we can to help him.” Finally, Clint woke up.
Amanda shared the news on Facebook, and a Girl Scouts leader presented 11-year-old Vada with the Medal of Honor, one of the organization’s highest honors.
4. Why did Vada go to learn CPR in Girl Scouts?
A. She wanted to help others. B. She hoped to get an honor there.
C. She was into medical knowledge. D. She was sent there by her parents.
5. What did Vada do after finding Clint feeling unwell?
A. She called her mom for help. B. She helped to keep him warm.
C. She told him to take a shower. D. She took his body temperature.
6. Which of the following can best describe Vada?
A. Skilled but careless. B. Creative and heroic.
C. Organized but impatient. D. Caring and cool-headed.
7. What did the rescuer’s words show in paragraph 5?

The finest musical instrument is the one we all own and carry with us always: the human voice.
A few years ago, several elderly farmers visited my house on Ireland’s windswept Atlantic coast. As midnight approached and the outside turned dark and freezing, one of the farmers suddenly began to sing. His voice echoed (回响) through the silence, high and sharp, singing a folk song about Banna Strand.
At such moments, singing becomes the soundtrack of our lives. Everything starts with the first music we ever hear — the voice of our mother. It is people opening their mouths to sing that lend seriousness and ritual (仪式) to occasions like birthdays and weddings.
Once the human voice is put into music, no matter whether your preference is Callas, Adele, or Queen, musical instruments are reduced to supporting roles. Like a fingerprint, the voice stamps music with a personal mark and can produce endless variations. Borrowing sounds and tones from spoken language, the human voice endows music with a feeling, an emotion, or a story — maybe a tale of a heartless lover, or of a ship that never made it to Banna Strand.
Nearly all forms of music bear signs of the human voice. When you listen to Chopin’s gentle pieces, what you hear is a piano imitating the human voice. When my violin teacher, Clarence Myerscough, wanted me to understand how to phrase a melody, he never showed it with his 17th-century Maggini violin. Instead, he sang with his plain 20th-century voice.
Singing does us a world of good. Concentrating on singing loudly refreshes both the mind and the body. The breathing in singing clears our airways, helping to prevent coughs and colds. Belting out a song can also relieve frustrations.
Why not test if this works? If you don’t have the confidence to join a local choir (合唱团), you can at least lock yourself safely in the bathroom while taking a shower, open your mouth, take a deep breath, and let out your own voice — even if it is not perfect. Music lies within you. You just need to find it.
8. Why does the author mention the elderly Irish farmer in the text?
A. To show the wide spread of folk songs.
B. To stress the unique charm of the voice.
C. To prove farmers enjoy singing folk songs.
D. To share an unforgettable personal experience.
9. What does the underlined word “endows” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Records. B. represents. C. Provides. D. Exchanges.
10. How does the author support his opinion in paragraph 5?
A. By listing some famous musicians and their works.
B. By displaying the historical development of music forms.
C. By giving specific examples in different musical situations.
D. By making a comparison between different musical instruments.
11. Which of the following would the author most probably agree with?
A. Singing is beneficial to our health both physically and mentally.
B. People sing on weddings to express their wishes for a better life.
C. Only professional singers can bring music to life with their voices.
D. The human voice is less expressive than other musical instruments.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. A

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence has become deeply part of our daily lives, raising a curious yet thought-provoking question: should we extend human politeness to machines? Beneath this simple question lies a tense conflict between societal politeness and the practical realities of our growing digital interactions.
Recently,Sam Altman,CEO of OpenAI,brought public attention to the economic costs hidden in these polite gestures. When a user on the social media wondered about the economic burden of users adding “please” and “thank you” in their interactions with OpenAI’s AI models, Altman confirmed that the costs had reached tens of millions of dollars. This fact cast light on the fact that these seemingly harmless acts of politeness are not as cost-free as people might think.
Every interaction with chatbots such as ChatGPT relies on computer power, which in turn consumes electricity. This process involves running algorithms (算法) that are highly energy-intensive. Neil Johnson,a physics professor at George Washington University, compared these extra polite words to product packaging. They do not contribute to the user’s needs, yet the AI must still process them, increasing overall energy use.
The environmental impact of this cannot be ignored. As the world struggles with climate change, even small unnecessary waste can contribute to big problems. The energy wasted on processing these polite extra words indirectly adds to carbon footprints, making this a matter that extends beyond individual habits to environmental responsibility.
However, there is another side to the argument. Many argue that maintaining politeness in interactions with AI is essential for preserving our humanity. Saying “please” or “thank you” to a machine may seem pointless, but it strengthens these polite behaviors in our interactions with other people.
So,where do we draw the line? Perhaps the solution lies in finding a balance. We can be brief in our requests while keeping basic politeness,or AI developers could run algorithms to identify and remove extra polite phrases without sacrificing the user’s desire to be polite. Finally, this problem forces us to reflect on what we value as technology becomes more deeply integrated into our lives.
12. What misunderstanding do people have about politeness with AI?
A. It is useless to communicate with AI politely.
B. AI will appreciate polite words like humans.
C. AI developers can pick out polite phrases easily.
D. Polite words to AI cause no extra economic cost.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The ways to reduce energy consumption in AI data processing.
B. The severe results of global climate change and carbon emissions.
C. The environmental harm caused by polite words in AI interactions.
D. The relationship between AI development and environmental protection.
14. According to the author, what is a suitable way to interact with AI?
A. To keep basic politeness and make core requests brief.
B. To use more polite expressions to keep our humanity fully.
C. To ask AI developers to delete all polite phrases in algorithms.
D. To avoid using any polite words to cut down all costs completely.
15. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Defending Politeness in Daily Interactions with AI
B. Balancing Politeness to AI and Environmental Impacts
C. Maintaining Personalities in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
D. Reducing Economic Costs in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B

Research shows that students who follow structured learning routines can achieve up to 30% higher grades. However, mastering effective study methods is not about working longer — it’s about working smarter. Here are three science-backed strategies designed to help you study more efficiently and improve your academic performance.
____16____
Before starting a study session, it is important to define specific objectives. For example, instead of vaguely (模糊地) aiming to “study English,” you could target “learning 30 new words” or “understanding the main themes of a short story.” This kind of clarity not only helps you maintain focus but also makes it easier to track your progress.
Review regularly
Human brains tend to forget information over time without reinforcement. ____17____ Spending just 10 minutes each day reviewing notes or key concepts can greatly strengthen long-term memory. Many students find tools like flashcards especially useful for this type of regular review.
Schedule breaks
____18____ Studies show that working in 25-minute focused intervals (间隔) followed by 5-minute breaks can significantly boost productivity. During these short breaks, it’s helpful to stretch, drink water, or simply rest your eyes — try to avoid scrolling through your phone, as this can distract your mind and reduce concentration.
Organize your space
A clean and organized study environment supports clearer thinking. ____19____ Keep only the necessary materials on your desk and silence notifications on your devices to create a calm, distraction-free zone.
By applying these methods consistently, you can gradually turn studying from a stressful task into a manageable and even enjoyable routine. ____20____ Keep in mind that small daily improvements often lead to meaningful, long-term results.
A. Set clear goals.
B. Study step by step.
C. For example, color-code subjects in your planner.
D. This can be done effectively using timed intervals.
E. Always prioritize quality over quantity in learning.
F. Physical exercise also enhances mental performance.
G. However, spaced repetition helps with this tendency.
【答案】16. A 17. G 18. D 19. C 20. E

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落的开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的 短文。
When I saw the envelope with the foreign stamp on the doormat (门垫), my heart skipped a beat instantly. It was from Leo, my childhood best friend who had moved to Argentina three years ago. We had promised to write to each other, but as my high school life got busier with homework and exams, my replies grew slower and fewer, until they stopped altogether without explanation. Yet Leo had never stopped writing, his last letter arriving six months ago, left unanswered on my desk for weeks.
Now, holding his new letter gently, I felt a sharp wave of shame welling up in my chest. Carefully opening the envelope, I found no word of blame inside, but a delicate dried butterfly pressed between two transparent sheets of paper. “Finding this beautiful butterfly near my window this morning,” Leo wrote neatly. “It reminded me of the summer we chased butterflies in the old wild field nearby. I hope life is treating you kindly, my dearest friend.”
That quiet afternoon, I took the butterfly and walked to the abandoned field, redesigned to be a parking lot soon. Our secret spot under the big oak (橡树) tree was still there, just as we left it. I sat down slowly on the cool grass, the silence broken only by faint distant city sounds. How could I explain my long silence? Heavy exam pressure? Distraction of new friends? All felt like weak excuses for my carelessness. I closed my eyes and memories flooded in: Leo patiently teaching me simple Spanish phrases, his warm laughter when I clumsily spoiled the pronunciation; the cardboard spaceship we built together, sitting side by side and dreaming of exploring distant galaxies hand in hand. The fragile (脆弱的) butterfly in my palm felt light yet heavy, a precious connection to a friendship and a past I had carelessly let slip away.

Just as I was lost in thought, a shadow fell over me.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Just as I was lost in thought, a shadow fell over me. I looked up and saw the old field keeper, who had often watched Leo and me play here. He smiled, nodded at the butterfly in my palm, and said true friendship like ours never fades with time. His words touched me deeply, turning my guilt into a strong desire to make amends. I thanked him, my eyes tearful, and the weight in my chest lightened.
With the butterfly held firmly, I knew exactly what to do next. I rushed home, took a clean notebook, and wrote to Leo. I poured out our precious memories, apologized sincerely for my long silence, and told him how much our friendship meant to me. I pressed a clover from the oak tree into the letter, sealed it carefully, and sent it that afternoon. No excuse could undo the past, but I hoped my sincerity would mend our bond. As I dropped the envelope into the mailbox, I smiled, confident our friendship would fly again, just like the butterfly.
