Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However, in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organization, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.”
Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined.
Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. “My biggest wish,” Mei says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it.”
4. What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall?
A. The dream of being a hero. B. The influence of his friends.
C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from the villagers.
5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Recognized. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed.
6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian?
A. Careful and confident. B. Kind - hearted and humorous.
C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong - willed.
7. What does the story of Mei tell us about heritage protection?
A. One person’s hard work can start group action.
B. Professional training is the key to success.
C. Money is the best way to make people join.
D. Tourism should be strictly limited until all work is done.

When AI art generators become popular around the world, a question stays in people’s minds: should their works really be thought of as art? While the technology is still developing and has things to improve, it’s clear we must balance its problems against the amazing artworks that good AI can make.
Art is defined as something made from imagination skill, experience and emotion, usually created to show something for people to enjoy. Human artists spend time and effort turning their inner thoughts into real works. In the same way, AI uses a lot of computing power to look through huge amounts of data, link a user’s request to related information, and try to present it as well as possible. The main difference, though, is that AI follows orders instead of having a strong feeling to express itself.
With one press of the enter key, AI art generators can produce more than 1,000 original works. But a mass-produced copy of the Mona Lisa is less valuable than Leonardo da Vinci’s real painting. Why? Scarcity — there’s only one true version. This brings up questions: Should anyone pay for AI-generated art? And if an artist sells AI-made great works, what price is right?
AI art works when a program copies the styles of existing artists to create new pieces based on what people ask for. But who should get credit for the artwork — the machine or the person using it? Can original artists take legal action for copyright violation? These questions make it hard to mix AI and the art industry, and also make more arguments against seeing AI-generated art as products that can be sold.
Once we solve these problems, we can deal with the biggest question: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who should get the prize?
8. What makes AI art different from human art?
A. It doesn’t show humans’ inner feelings.
B. It comes from people’s life experience.
C. It needs less money to make.
D. It mixes various work styles together.
9. Why does the writer mention Mona Lisa in paragraph 3?
A. To show classic artworks are well-liked.
B. To prove AI painters are better than human artists.
C. To point out possible problems with AI art’s value.
D. To suggest a new way to keep art masterpieces.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. AI art helps sell more artistic products.
B. Artists can create more works with AI’s help.
C. The art industry will have tough competition.
D. AI art makes copyright problems harder to solve.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain why AI-generated art is more popular than human art.
B. To discuss the arguments and questions around AI-generated art’s status.
C. To introduce how AI art generators create original artworks.
D. To prove that AI-generated art should not be seen as real art.
D
Recently, doctors and scientists have noticed a sharp increase in early-onset (早发性的) cancers among people under 50, which includes many types of cancers and has been found in many countries, leading some to wonder if it is becoming a common health problem. A new international study carried out by a research team of the UK-based Institute of Cancer Research, headed by professor Amy Berrington de Gonzalez, suggests that rising cancer rates (率) are not only seen in younger people but also in older adults. Moreover, the cancers with the highest increases in both age groups are related to obesity (肥胖症).
Cancer has long been considered a disease of old age, often resulting from DNA damage that builds up over time. The sharp rise in early-onset cancers has drawn much attention, with concerns about possible new causes. However, this has caused us to overlook the fact that older people still make up most new cancer cases around the world. Therefore, the research team from London aimed to explore whether the increase in early-onset cancers is part of a larger trend affecting all ages.
The team studied data from 42 countries, paying attention to 13 cancer types in adults aged 20 — 49 and those over 50. They chose cancers reported before to be rising globally in younger adults. Results showed that six cancers increased in young adults in at least 75% of the countries. Five of these also rose in older adults, with colorectal cancer (结直肠癌) being an exception. Early-onset colorectal cancer increased in 88% of countries, compared to only 55% for older adults. Berrington said the larger increase in younger adults may result from better testing in countries with common screening programs.
Additionally, the study found that cancers increasing in both age groups were related to obesity, in line with rising obesity rates among youth and adults. Doctor Christopher Cann and Doctor Efrat Dotan commented that this shows a growing cancer problem across all generations and calls for attention to future social effects.
12. What can we learn about early-onset cancers?
A. Their increase is hardly related to obesity.
B. They are now a common international health issue.
C. Young people are the main group affected by their rise.
D. Their rising rates involve both younger and older adults.
13. How did the team carry out the study according to paragraph 3?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By studying data.
C. By giving an example. D. By comparing opinions.
14. Why did early-onset colorectal cancer increase more in younger adults, according to Berrington?
A. Improved testing in some countries. B. Higher obesity rates in young adults.
C. Healthier living habits in older adults. D. Positive changes in diet and lifestyle.
15. Which word best describes Cann and Dotan’s attitude to the study finding?
A. Concerned. B. Confused. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.

In a new school filled with unfamiliar faces, Charlie felt like a fish out of water. The lively chatter of students around him only fueled his loneliness. Every day, he walked through the hallways feeling invisible and trapped in uncertainty. To escape this loneliness, Charlie turned to video games, where he became a hero battling monsters and saving kingdoms. In this digital world, he felt powerful and important, unlike his quiet life at school.
Ms. Rita, his literature teacher, noticed the quiet boy at the back of the classroom, often lost in his thoughts. She had a gift for connecting with her students, always offering kind words or warm smiles. Although she encouraged Charlie to share his feelings, he hid his struggles, preferring the company of imaginary friends in his games, where he found the appreciation that was missing in his real life.
Recently, Charlie became hooked on a new game. One Sunday evening, he immersed himself in its colorful world, ignoring his mother’s reminders to sleep. Excited by his adventures, he remained awake, thinking about strategies, which left him anxious and tired for school.
The next day, unable to resist the temptation, Charlie secretly packed his gaming machine in his backpack. In Ms. Rita’s class, his heart raced, not from the lesson on poetry, but from the thought of playing during breaks. While other students engaged in discussions about finding something valuable in life, Charlie’s mind was focused on the game hidden in his bag.
When the discussion opened up, he took the chance to peek at his gaming machine. As he powered it on, the screen flashed with new quests, and he lost track of his surroundings. Unfortunately, just as he was concentrating, the gaming machine slipped from his hands and crashed to the floor with a loud sound. Silence enveloped the classroom, and all eyes turned towards him, the weight of anxiety and tension heavy in the air.

When AI art generators become popular around the world, a question stays in people’s minds: should their works really be thought of as art? While the technology is still developing and has things to improve, it’s clear we must balance its problems against the amazing artworks that good AI can make.
Art is defined as something made from imagination, skill, experience and emotion, usually created to show something for people to enjoy.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The main difference, though, is that AI follows orders instead of having a strong feeling to express itself.(然而,主要区别在于AI遵循指令,而非拥有强烈的情感需要表达。)”可知, AI与人类艺术的根本区别在于——AI没有情感或内在感受,只是执行指令。故选A。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“But a mass-produced copy of the Mona Lisa is less valuable than Leonardo da Vinci’s real painting. Why? Scarcity—there’s only one true version. This brings up questions: Should anyone pay for AI-generated art? And if an artist sells AI-made great works, what price is right?(但批量复制的《蒙娜丽莎》不如达·芬奇的真迹有价值。
根据文章第四段“But who should get credit for the artwork—the machine or the person using it? Can original artists take legal action for copyright violation? These questions make it hard to mix AI and the art industry, and also make more arguments against seeing AI-generated art as products that can be sold.(但谁应该获得艺术作品的荣誉——是机器还是使用它的人?原创艺术家可以因版权侵权提起诉讼吗?这些问题使得AI与艺术行业难以融合,也引发了更多反对将AI生成艺术视为可销售产品的争论。)”可知,第四段提出多个关键问题,谁应获得作品署名权?机器还是用户?原创艺术家能否起诉侵权?这些问题使AI与艺术行业的融合变得复杂。这表明AI加剧了版权认定的难度。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“When AI art generators become popular around the world, a question stays in people’s minds: should their works really be thought of as art?(当AI艺术生成器风靡全球时,一个问题萦绕在人们心中:它们的作品真的应该被视为艺术吗?)”可知,文围绕“AI生成的作品是否应被视为艺术”这一核心问题展开,探讨了AI艺术与人类艺术的差异、价值认定困境、版权归属争议等,旨在讨论围绕AI艺术地位的争议和问题,故选B。

A. Concerned. B. Confused. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. A

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1
However, Ms. Rita picked up the fallen gaming machine with her usual warm smile. Instead of blaming or criticizing Charlie, she playfully joked that he was the first student to uncover something really “valuable” from the poem they had just discussed. She urged the other students to work on their search for valuable things in life, adding that every perspective mattered. Her unexpected joke transformed the moment, and laughter erupted in the classroom, saving Charlie from embarrassment and easing his anxiety. In that instant, his heart began to lighten, feeling warmth instead of shame.
Paragraph 2
Grateful while guilty, Charlie approached Ms. Rita’s office after school. He expressed his thanks for her forgiveness while admitting to his distraction during class. He recognized the need to balance his passion for gaming and study. Ms. Rita listened attentively, and returned his console with a smile. She encouraged him to join the school’s e-sports club, suggesting that combining his interest with social involvement help him connect with others. In that moment, Ms. Rita’s forgiveness and understanding melted his heart, inspiring him to embrace both his passion and the journey of building new friendships.
