It’s 4:30 am on a Friday in August and beneath a sky touched by dawn, the only ones awake seem to be me, riding my bike sleepily through the empty streets, and the foxes who own them at this time of day. Just two things can force me out of bed this early: travel and food, and this morning’s motivation is croissant In June my friend invited me in a plan to visit the people who get up at silly o’clock to bake our daily bread. And so here we are, avoiding the delivery riders already waiting outside McDonald’s, heading down a path towards the sweet, and warm bakery with butter smell.
When she arrives, our guide, Daisy Terry, Dusty Knuckle’s owner, explains that the bakery now shuts down from 1—5 am. Their process is structured around the need to save energy and get more sleep. It’s a two-way street: Daisy believes the quality of the bread is totally dependent on the mood in the bakery. They all laugh at me, she says, but it’s why we have music on in here, and do good staff meals. Regular massages (按摩) and yoga are also mentioned.
Yet, even in this toasty-smelling bubble, the future is uncertain. The price of both butter and flour have gone up substantially, and — as with energy — will rise again before the year is out. Wages will have to increase sharply too. Small business as it is, it attracts famous customers when many people are struggling to afford white bread. It was set up in 2014 in part to offer training and jobs to young people at risk of a prison sentence. Daisy says that she spends half her time on the phone to oven (烤箱) engineers and the other half talking to probation officers (假释官).
Oh, and I get my croissant, still warm from the oven. As I started eating eagerly, I saw a fox watching me narrowly through the glass. It seems not all early birds catch the worm.
20. What drives the writer to get up early?
A A travel plan with friends. B. The desire for fresh bread.
C. An invitation to go cycling. D. The curiosity about wild life.
21. Why are Daisy’s employees taken good care of?
A. They will become physically strong.
B. They will work more independently.
C. They will guarantee bread quality.
D. They will show respect to their owner.
22. What does the underlined word “substantially” mean in the third paragraph?
A. Gradually. B. Slightly.
C. Greatly. D. Slowly.
23. What do we know about Dusty Knuckle?
A. It hires many released prisoners.
B. It provides around-the-clock service.
C. It charges a high price for profit.
D. It appeals to some well-known people.

Motion sickness is feeling sick when you’re traveling by car, boat, plane, or train or during other movement. About one in three people are very likely to get motion sickness, but almost everyone gets motion sickness if the movement is strong enough. Listening to music can help people with motion sickness feel better, according to new research — but it depends on the type of song you play.
Scientists explain that people get motion sickness because their senses are sending different messages to their brains. In a moving car, for example, your eyes tell your brain you’re moving because objects are moving past, but your inner ear, which helps with balance, tells it you’re sitting still. This confusion can make you feel ill.
A study by scientists at the Henan Institute of Science and Technology in China involved 30 volunteers who tend to get motion sickness. The participants used a driving simulator (模拟器) that made them feel as if they were in a moving car. Sensors were attached to their heads to record electrical activity in their brains. By tracking brain activity, the team could tell when volunteers were experiencing motion sickness or feeling better.
The volunteers were divided into six groups. Four groups used the simulator until they felt carsick, then stopped “driving” and listened to different kinds of music for 60 seconds. One group used the simulator until they felt sick and then, instead of listening to music, were asked to calm themselves with meditation (冥想) for one minute. The final group was asked to alert researchers when they started to feel even slightly carsick and were taken off of the simulator before it got worse.
The results revealed that joyful tunes were the best style of music for reducing motion sickness. Soft music was a close second, followed by energetic music. However, sad music actually slowed recovery. Even people who listened to nothing felt better sooner than those who listened to sad music. The researchers believe that personalized music play lists could be useful in helping people beat motion sickness.
24. What causes travel sickness according to the text?
A. The body’s inability to move freely.
B. The brain receiving confusing signals.
C. The eyes failing to see objects clearly.
D. The inner ear losing its function slowly.
25. How does the author develop paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. By describing study procedure. B. By comparing study results.
C. By introducing useful theories. D. By analyzing the recorded data.
26. Which finding is consistent with the study results?
A. Joyful music works better than soft or energetic music.
B. Soft music slows down recovery from motion sickness.
C. Sad music fails to have strong effects on motion sickness.
D. Music’s effect on motion sickness varies with its rhythm.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Study on prevention of motion sickness.
B. Effects of music types on motion sickness.
C. Importance of personalized music playlists.
D. Common ways to deal with motion sickness.

Dear Mr. Barone,
I am writing on behalf of the seventh-grade class. The traditional seventh-grade spring field trip is to the State History Museum. This year, however, the seventh grade would like to request a change. The class is interested in going to the new World Botanical (植物的) Gardens. Although this would mean a two-hour bus ride, the benefits of the new field trip would make the extra time worthwhile. The garden hours are from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. The class could leave school at 8:00 A.M. and arrive just as the gardens open. We would have time to explore the gardens, make notes about our favorite exhibits, eat lunch, and return to school by 4:00 P.M.
Many seventh-grade students have already visited the history museum. Since the museum is so close students often go there with their families, or with other groups. We have enjoyed the many interesting exhibits, but this year we are hoping to learn something new.
The purpose of the new field trip destination is to help students understand the different environments of our planet. The World Botanical Gardens contains the second-largest walk-through Amazon rainforest exhibit in the country. Some of the other popular exhibits are the Giant Flowers, the Arid Deserts, and the Palm Trees Around the World.
Since seventh-grade students study plants and plant energy in science class, visiting the botanical gardens would be an appropriate and educational field trip. The information we could learn there would be an excellent way to add to our science studies. We would observe plants growing in special displays that are similar to their natural habitats.
Please consider this request for the seventh-grade field trip to World Botanical Gardens. Any increase in the traditional field trip expenses, such as the longer bus ride, could be made up for by fundraisers such as bake sales and car washes.
If I can provide additional information, please let me know.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Robert Burns
28. Why does the writer use the phrase “the seventh grade” instead of “I”?
A. To draw attention to the details of the field trip.
B. To show the students are united about the field trip.
C. To encourage other students to write about the field trip.
D. To tell that the teachers also support the field trip.
29. Which aspect of the new field trip is mentioned?
A. The organizer. B. The expense.
C. The number of students. D. The length of time.
30. Why does the writer recommend the World Botanical Gardens?
A. It is more familiar to the students.
B. It exposes students to garden art.
C. It enriches students’ class learning.
D. It shows plants in natural habitats.
31. Which word best describes the author’s tone in the passage?
A. Critical. B. Formal.
C. Humorous. D. Negative.

We seek to understand ourselves by exploring our pasts, and AI will not change this fundamental urge. The digital revolution has already changed the historian’s work greatly, though our goal remains the same. ___32___ Barriers of geography, cost and physical access have fallen, making history more available than ever.
However, easy online searching sometimes makes us lose the bigger picture. ___33___ Always, we shape and are shaped by our tools in a relationship that must be carefully managed.
We will use AI where it can help us — to do repetitive tasks, to “distantly read” sources identifying areas for closer inspection, or to improve our writing. ___34___ AI tends to hide its sources and invent things. Hopefully, new tools will let us use AI in a more thoughtful and controlled way.
We must think carefully about how we use AI in the classroom, too. Students learn that critical reading and precision writing are the essential tools for understanding the past. These skills cannot be handed over to machines without losing something important and can be gained only with practice. ___35___ Yet we cannot simply ignore AI, because we have begun to encounter its output routinely in our daily lives.
___36___ If AI leads to an age of fast, cheap, and mass-produced text, then the skills that history teaches will become more valuable.
A. Much change has been positive.
B. History is a project, not a product.
C. But we must also be cautious of its dangers.
D. So we must protect space for them in our teaching.
E. Some experts predict that AI will change everything.
F. We may miss how information systems select and present sources.
G. As a result, we are becoming better at judging the reliability of online sources.

In the fall of 1993, high school senior Jed Mottley appeared to have a perfect life. He was the captain on Chaparral High School’s football team, and also played the guitar in his spare time. Yet beneath his bright smile and outgoing personality, the teen hid his home life from classmates.
At home, Jed and his younger brother Josh were raised by their mom Gerry. She took various jobs to make a living, but struggling to cover daily expenses and rent was a constant battle. Jed recalled his childhood as “a tough roller coaster (过山车) ride”, yet he always thought of his mom as a loving, artistic woman who devoted all to her kids.
Gerry never wanted Jed to miss the valuable coming-of-age experience as a school football team player, so she promised him a letterman jacket Jed even designed his own bright red and gold jacket for the Chaparral Firebirds, with his name and letter on the front. Months later, the jacket sent to a tailor store was ready, but its $300 price was a heavy burden. Gerry kept putting off picking up the jacket, saying they could afford it the next month. Sadly, the school year ended, and Jed never got his jacket, nor even saw the finished one. He kept this regret to himself all along.
Fast-forward to November 2021: Jed had moved to another city, playing in a local band instead of playing football. His beloved mom passed away in 2012, and he hadn’t seen Josh for years. Then a sudden call from Josh surprised him, with an unbelievable question: “Hey — Is there any chance I’m looking at your letterman jacket right now?” It turned out Josh was in a second-hand store near their old neighborhood when he noticed a letterman jacket. On the front were his brother’s name and letter! He bought it without hesitation and could not wait to tell Jed about it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Within a couple of days, Jed showed up at his brother’s house.

I know you have some experience with mountain climbing and aren’t exactly green hands. But every climb needs good preparation. For our first night sleeping in the mountains, let me tell you a bit about my experiences. Even though there are cheap and fine houses in most mountain areas, the truth is, with a quality sleeping bag, it would be more comfortable in the cold weather. When I was young and encouraged by the stories of famous climbers, I would dream of being able to do everything by myself while on the mountain. To this day, I still dream about climbing ice walls and looking at the world from the top of Mount Qomolangma. But I stopped trying to push my limits after being hit by falling rocks on Mount Kilimanjaro. This situation is rare, but it made me more careful about my trips. Most often, I just have to watch out for snowstorms, but there are many other less common dangers as well. For the next five days, I’ll lead you to explore the mountains and help you take some amazing photos.

B
A. A travel plan with friends.
B 21. C 22. C 23. D

B 25. A 26. A 27. B

根据第二段中“Scientists explain that people get motion sickness because their senses are sending different messages to their brains. (科学家解释说,人们会晕动是因为他们的感官向大脑发送了不同的信息)”可知,晕动病的起因是感官向大脑发送了不同的信息,导致大脑接收了混乱的信号。故选B项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“A study by scientists at the Henan Institute of Science and Technology in China involved 30 volunteers who tend to get motion sickness. The participants used a driving simulator (模拟器) that made them feel as if they were in a moving car. Sensors were attached to their heads to record electrical activity in their brains. By tracking brain activity, the team could tell when volunteers were experiencing motion sickness or feeling better. (志愿者被分成六组)”以及后续对各组不同处理方法的描述可推知,第三、四段主要通过描述研究的具体过程(实验对象、设备、分组和步骤)来展开。故选A项。
根据第五段中“The results revealed that joyful tunes were the best style of music for reducing motion sickness. Soft music was a close second, followed by energetic music. (结果显示,欢快的曲调是减轻晕动病的最佳音乐类型。轻柔的音乐紧随其后,其次是充满活力的音乐)”可知,欢快的音乐比轻柔或充满活力的音乐效果更好,这与研究结果一致。故选A项。
根据全文内容,特别是第一段“Listening to music can help people with motion sickness feel better, according to new research — but it depends on the type of song you play. (根据新的研究,听音乐可以帮助晕车的人感觉更好——但这取决于你播放的歌曲类型)”可知,全文围绕不同音乐类型对缓解晕动病效果的研究展开可知,文章主要介绍了音乐类型对晕动病的影响。由此可知,B项“Effects of music types on motion sickness. (音乐类型对晕动病的影响)”能概括文章主旨。故选B项。
D
Dear Mr. Barone,
I am writing on behalf of the seventh-grade class.
Since the museum is so close, students often go there with their families, or with other groups. We have enjoyed the many interesting exhibits, but this year we are hoping to learn something new.
The purpose of the new field trip destination is to help students understand the different environments of our planet. The World Botanical Gardens contains the second-largest walk-through Amazon rainforest exhibit in the country. Some of the other popular exhibits are the Giant Flowers the Arid Deserts, and the Palm Trees Around the World.

D. To tell that the teachers also support the field trip.
29. Which aspect of the new field trip is mentioned?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Within a couple of days, Jed showed up at his brother’s house. He hustled in with quick steps, his eyes sparkling with urgent hope. With his name and the Chaparral Firebirds logo clearly on the front, Jed immediately recognized it was exactly the one he’d designed decades ago! A flood of tears welled up in his eyes as he pictured Gerry, worn out yet resolute, taking extra odd jobs late at night. She must have spared every penny for the jacket, yet the tailor shop had closed down before she’d saved enough. What happened to the jacket then? The brothers decided to go back to the store to find out about its journey.
However, the storekeeper was not sure where the jacket came from. A flicker of disappointment crossed Jed’s face. Holding the well-preserved jacket, Jed felt like hugging mother once more. Every stitch seemed to carry her gentle warmth, wrapping her sons in a soft, familiar embrace. More than mere clothing, it was a symbol of mother’s love and a precious link connecting the family tightly again. In that moment, the two brothers understood that her presence, like the jacket itself, had simply been waiting to be found, forever sewn into the fabric of their lives.
