On my usual lunchtime walk in the West Yorkshire Valley, I found the once sad-looking boardwalk (木板路) repaired, with no sign of who had done the work. It was as if by magic. So, if not fairies (精灵), who was looking after this path?
After a bit of digging, I came across a local group called Community Rights of Way Service — or CROWS for short. They’re one of the many volunteer armies secretly keeping the nation’s paths in great condition, armed with hard-wearing boots, basic tools, and the positive attitude needed for a team that heads into the hills rain or shine. Thanks to them, walkers can continue adventuring out on favourite or newly discovered routes. Now CROWS is around 40 members strong, coming from all walks of life. The youngest member is in their 30s and the eldest in their 80s. Every volunteer shares a love for West Yorkshire.
Carrying materials is one of the biggest challenges for CROWS. In their experience, it sometimes means calling on the wider community for help. Once, needing to move 400 timber (木材) parts up a hillside, the group reached out on social media: scores of walkers and runners answered. “It really shows the relationship of local people to this landscape (风景), and their appreciation of volunteers who are trying to keep it usable.” Stella, a regular CROWS volunteer, remembered.
CROWS invited me to join them on a work trip in the valley one cloudy morning. We were off to uncover a path, part of the 18th century packhorse network. It reminds me that footpath volunteers aren’t just preserving rights of way for the future, they’re also safeguarding our national heritage and the ancient routes that have connected communities for centuries. Their work gives real meaning to the naturalist John Muir’s words: “Going to the mountains is going home.”
Thanks to the hard and often unseen work of volunteers, these paths will remain so for generations to come. Fairies or not, there’s a certain magic to that.
4. What confused the author at the very beginning?
A. How the magic worked. B. Where fairies came from.
C. Who fixed the boardwalk. D. When the boardwalk broke.
5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The description of CROWS. B. The goal of CROWS.
C. The challenge of CROWS. D. The establishment of CROWS.
6. Why does the author mention 400 timber parts?
A. To tell the value of landscape.
B. To prove the richness of supply.
C. To show the necessity of support.
D. To stress the influence of social media.
7. Which is closest in meaning to “so” in paragraph 5?
A. connected to the past.
B. preserved as they were.
C. uncovered for future use.
D. protected from any damage.
C 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据第1段中“I found the once sad-looking boardwalk repaired, with no sign of who had done the work.(我发现那条曾经破败的木板路被修好了,却看不出是谁做的这项工作。)”
根据第2段中“After a bit of digging, I came across a local group called Community Rights of Way Service — or CROWS for short. They’re one of the many volunteer armies secretly keeping the nation’s paths in great condition(经过一番了解,我发现了一个名为社区路权服务的当地团体,简称CROWS。他们是众多默默守护着国家步道完好的志愿者队伍之一)”和“Now CROWS is around 40 members strong, coming from all walks of life. The youngest member is in their 30s and the eldest in their 80s. Every volunteer shares a love for West Yorkshire.(如今CROWS约有40名成员,来自各行各业。最年轻的成员30多岁,最年长的80多岁。每位志愿者都对西约克郡充满热爱。)”可知,第二段主要是对CROWS这个志愿者团体的具体介绍。故选A。
根据第3段中“Carrying materials is one of the biggest challenges for CROWS. In their experience, it sometimes means calling on the wider community for help. Once, needing to move 400 timber parts up a hillside, the group reached out on social media: scores of walkers and runners answered.(搬运物资是CROWS面临的最大挑战之一。根据他们的经验,这有时意味着需要向更广泛的社区寻求帮助。有一次,需要将400块木材部件搬上山坡,该团体在社交媒体上发出求助,许多徒步者和跑步爱好者都伸出了援手。)”可知,作者提及400块木材部件是为了说明该团体的工作需要外界的支持,体现了这种支持的必要性。故选C。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第5段中“Thanks to the hard and often unseen work of volunteers, these paths will remain so for generations to come.(多亏了志愿者们辛苦且常常不为人知的工作,这些步道将世世代代保持如此。)”
C
Buying something that you are going to share with another person creates greater anxiety than buying something just for yourself or buying a gift for someone, according to a new study. The study also found that shopping for things you will share lowers your confidence in your ability to choose suitable items (物品). The study, which has been published in the Journal of Marketing Research, looked at three kinds of shopping experience: buying something for yourself, buying a gift for someone and buying something for shared use.
Over 2,000 people were asked to measure their levels of anxiety for these three experiences in different shopping situations, such as choosing healthy drinks for a meeting, snacks for a movie or wine for a party, as well as more difficult decisions such as choosing travel activities. The results showed that buying something that will be shared causes obviously more anxiety than either shopping for yourself or shopping for a gift.
The researchers found that when shoppers need to consider both their own and other people’s preferences, they feel an increased sense of responsibility, and worry more about not making the right choices. This anxiety is felt especially when the other person’s preferences aren’t known, or if they are expected to be different from their own. One of the researchers, Margaret Campbell, told Phys. org that the level of anxiety is not related to how difficult the shopper’s decision is, but to the “added emotional weight of responsibility.”
The researchers said trying to learn as much as you can about the other person’s preferences can help reduce your anxiety and increase your confidence as the shopper. However, this still doesn’t work if the other person’s preferences are different from your own!
Also, if a shopper asks you what your preferences are, saying you don’t care, or, “Get whatever you like,” is not a helpful answer and will actually increase the shopper’s anxiety. So it’s better to give a more considered answer.
8. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Shopping reduces people’s anxiety.
B. Anxiety weakens the ability to choose gifts.
C. Anxiety leads people to choose right items.
D. Shopping to share causes the most anxiety.
9. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By tracking shopping anxiety sources.
B. By assessing anxiety levels of shopping types.
C. By comparing shopping habits of different groups.
D. By testing shopping preferences for certain items.
10. What mainly caused the anxiety about shopping for shared use?
A. The shared preferences.
B. The duty to meet both sides.
C. The uncertainty of the results.
D. The difficulty in making choices.
11. Which answer might be preferred when buying shared items?
A. “We can decide when we see what’s on sale.”
B. “I often prefer tea, but juice would also work.”
C. “I’d prefer a drink without sugar, like green tea.”
D. “You have good taste — I’ll like whatever you pick.”
D 9. B 10. B 11. C
根据第一段中“Buying something that you are going to share with another person creates greater anxiety than buying something just for yourself or buying a gift for someone, according to a new study.( 一项新研究指出,购买将要与他人共享的物品会比只为自己购买物品或为他人购买礼物引发更大的焦虑感。)”以及第二段中“The results showed that buying something that will be shared causes obviously more anxiety than either shopping for yourself or shopping for a gift.( 结果表明,购买将要共享的物品所引发的焦虑明显多于为自己购买物品或为他人购买礼物。)”
根据第二段中“Over 2,000 people were asked to measure their levels of anxiety for these three experiences in different shopping situations, such as choosing healthy drinks for a meeting, snacks for a movie or wine for a party, as well as more difficult decisions such as choosing travel activities.( 超过 2000 人被要求在不同的购物情境中评估这三种体验所带来的焦虑程度,比如为会议选择健康饮品、为电影选择零食或为聚会选择葡萄酒,以及更复杂的决策,如选择旅行活动。)”
根据第三段中“The researchers found that when shoppers need to consider both their own and other people’s preferences, they feel an increased sense of responsibility, and worry more about not making the right choices.( 研究人员发现,当购物者需要同时考虑自己的喜好和他人的喜好时,他们会感到更多的责任感,并更担心无法做出正确的选择。)”以及“the level of anxiety is not related to how difficult the shopper’s decision is, but to the “added emotional weight of responsibility.( 焦虑程度并非取决于购物者决策的难度,而是取决于“责任所带来的额外情感负担”。)”可知,导致人们对于共享购物服务产生焦虑的主要原因是满足双方需求的责任。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“The researchers said trying to learn as much as you can about the other person’s preferences can help reduce your anxiety and increase your confidence as the shopper.( 研究人员表示,尽可能多地了解对方的喜好有助于减轻焦虑,并增强作为购物者的信心。)”以及最后一段“Also, if a shopper asks you what your preferences are, saying you don’t care, or, “Get whatever you like,” is not a helpful answer and will actually increase the shopper’s anxiety. So it’s better to give a more considered answer.( 此外,如果购物者询问你的喜好,说你不在乎,或者“随你喜欢就好”,这样的回答并非有益的回答,反而会增加购物者的焦虑感。所以,给出一个更经过深思熟虑的回答会更好。)”可知,减少购物者焦虑的关键是给出具体、明确的偏好,而非模糊的回答,C 项“我想要无糖饮品,比如绿茶” 表述具体,是购物者更偏好的答案。故选C项。
D
Tinamous are ground-dwelling jungle birds in the forests of Central and South America. They camouflage (伪装) themselves to hide from predators (捕食者). What doesn’t make sense is why such artfully camouflaged birds lay brightly colored eggs and leave males alone to protect them.
Studying tinamous in Costa Rica, scientist Patricia Brennan discovered 60 percent of eggs were cared for by males, but not their biological fathers. This goes against the standard Darwin’s theory that male-only parental care should only evolve (进化) when males have a high certainty of biological fatherhood. Brennan thought she’d made a mistake. Yet, double-checking her lab work, she found she was right and wondered how the female was getting away with it.
If biological fatherhood is important to tinamous, one would expect the male to evolve a way of throwing out foreign eggs. But as Brennan discovered, the male tinamou has no such skills. To do her biological fatherhood testing, she had to remove real eggs and replace them with fake ones. The males continued to incubate (孵化) the fake eggs regardless. Then, when the baby birds came out of the eggs in her lab, Brennan would put them in existing young in the forest. Again, the males didn’t care.
That was her aha moment. She set up cameras on the tinamou nests (巢) and recorded about 80 percent of the eggs being eaten by predators, mostly snakes. Brennan realized that the best way for both females and males to achieve their baby birds’ best survival chance was to spread their eggs across different nests.
This intentional mix-up also explained the eggs’ bright colors. This is an attraction signal to other females to lay their eggs there. Brennan observed that snakes only ate at most three eggs at a time. So, the more eggs, the better chance of surviving.
Her research, then, rescues the great tinamou from being considered an irresponsible parent, but also shows that the idea of being a good mother can take many forms.
12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Brennan’s lab work turned out a failure.
B. Brennan’s study changed Darwin’s theory.
C. Tinamou eggs were taken care of by males.
D. Tinamou eggs were well hidden from predators.
13. What does Brennan’s “aha moment” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. She drove away all the snakes.
B. She found tinamous’ survival secret.
C. She recorded the process of egg loss.
D. She set up cameras on tinamou nests.
14. What role do the brightly colored eggs play?
A. They make it easier for males to find the eggs.
B. They act as a warning to predators to stay away.
C. They help the males to protect eggs more easily.
D. They attract other females to lay in the same nest.
15. What does the behaviour of tinamous show?
A. Like father, like son.
B. Birds in their little nests agree.
C. When one door shuts, another opens.
D. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
C 13. B 14. D 15. D
根据第一段最后一句“What doesn’t make sense is why such artfully camouflaged birds lay brightly colored eggs and leave males alone to protect them. (令人费解的是,为什么伪装得如此巧妙的鸟会产下颜色鲜艳的蛋,并留下雄性独自保护它们。)”及第二段第一句“Studying tinamous in Costa Rica, scientist Patricia Brennan discovered 60 percent of eggs were cared for by males, but not their biological fathers. (科学家Patricia Brennan在哥斯达黎加研究Tinamou时发现,60%的蛋由雄性照顾,但它们并非这些雄性的生物学父亲。)”可知,Tinamou的蛋是由雄性照顾的。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“Brennan realized that the best way for both females and males to achieve their baby birds’ best survival chance was to spread their eggs across different nests.(Brennan意识到,对雌鸟和雄鸟来说,实现雏鸟最佳存活机会的最好方式就是把它们的蛋分散到不同的巢里。)”
根据第五段中“This intentional mix-up also explained the eggs’ bright colors. This is an attraction signal to other females to lay their eggs there. (这种故意的混淆也解释了蛋的鲜艳颜色。这是一个吸引其他雌鸟来此产蛋的信号。) ”可知,颜色鲜艳的蛋所起的作用是吸引其他雌鸟来同一个巢里产蛋。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。本文核心揭示的Tinamou行为策略是:为了避免捕食者一次性吃掉太多蛋,雌鸟会将蛋产在不同雄鸟照看的多个巢中。这正对应了谚语“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket (不要把所有鸡蛋放在一个篮子里)”,意为不要将所有资源和希望集中于一处,应分散风险。
Penn and Teller are amazing magicians, but they do not do shows for kids. ____16____ The challenge lies in a little-noticed characteristic of performing for kids: during a show, a kid often shouts, “I know how you did that!”
Why do some kids do this? Sometimes, it’s pure excitement, but more often, it’s totally a wish to be “seen and heard” that has nothing to do with being polite. The funny thing is that they hardly understand how the magic is really done. All magic illusions (幻象) are not as simple as they may appear. ____17____ A mirror might truly be a part of making the illusion work, but it simply doesn’t explain how the illusion is fully done.
____18____ When it happens, people tend to overjudge how much they know about any given subject, especially when they know very little. The more astonishing finding, however, is that the more we actually know, the less our confidence is about how much we actually know. ____19____ Adults make posts online like “That’s not true!” especially when they are not knowledgeable on the topic.
How do you fix it? Here’s the deal: attempting to use critical (批判性的) thinking to explore what we believe are true is the best path forward. Overly confident statements will always exist, because that overconfidence is built into each of us. Once we realize it’s our own overconfidence speaking — not the truth, we can do something about it. ____20____
A. Illusions are easy to create.
B. This is the Dunning-Kruger effect.
C. For them, shows for kids are “just too hard.”
D. A cry of “It’s a mirror!” might be partially right.
E. We see this effect play out perfectly on social media.
F. They don’t look to their friend politely and nod knowingly.
G. That will make kids’ magic shows and the world much better.
C 17. D 18. B 19. E 20. G
由上文“Penn and Teller are amazing magicians, but they do not do shows for kids.(佩恩和泰勒是出色的魔术师,但他们不做儿童魔术表演。)”和下文“The challenge lies in a little-noticed characteristic of performing for kids: during a show, a kid often shouts, “I know how you did that!”(挑战在于为孩子表演一个鲜为人知的特点:表演中,孩子常会大喊“我知道你是怎么做到的!”)” C项“For them, shows for kids are “just too hard.”(对他们来说,儿童魔术表演“实在太难了”。)”
由上文“All magic illusions are not as simple as they may appear.(所有的魔术幻象都不像表面看起来那么简单。)”和下文“A mirror might truly be a part of making the illusion work, but it simply doesn’t explain how the illusion is fully done.(镜子可能确实是实现幻象的一部分,但这根本无法解释幻象的完整实现过程。)” D项“A cry of “It’s a mirror!” might be partially right.(大喊“是镜子!” 可能只是部分正确。)”符合语境,该句的例子对应孩子大喊拆穿魔术的行为,“partially right”与后文镜子只是幻象一部分相契合,逻辑清晰。故选D项。
【18题详解】
由下文“When it happens, people tend to overjudge how much they know about any given subject, especially when they know very little. The more astonishing finding, however, is that the more we actually know, the less our confidence is about how much we actually know.(当这种情况发生时,人们往往会高估自己对某一话题的了解程度,尤其是在知之甚少的时候。然而,更令人惊讶的发现是,我们实际知道的越多,对自己所知的信心就越低。)”可知,空格处需点明这种现象的专业名称,总领本段内容。B项“This is the Dunning-Kruger effect.(这就是邓宁-克鲁格效应。)”
由上文解释邓宁-克鲁格效应的内涵,和下文“Adults make posts online like “That’s not true!” especially when they are not knowledgeable on the topic.(成年人会在网上发 “那不是真的!” 这样的帖子,尤其是在他们对这个话题一无所知的时候。)”可知,空格处需衔接效应内涵与成年人在网络上的具体表现,说明该效应的体现场景。E项“We see this effect play out perfectly on social media.(我们能在社交媒体上清楚地看到这种效应的体现。)”
由上文“Once we realize it’s our own overconfidence speaking — not the truth, we can do something about it.(一旦我们意识到说话的是自己的过度自信,而非事实,我们就能有所行动。)” G项“That will make kids’ magic shows and the world much better.(那会让儿童魔术表演和这个世界变得更美好。)”

It was one of those rainy Sunday afternoons. I was concentrating on my blank canvas (画布), feeling ____21____. My painting for the upcoming competition lay untouched.
From the kitchen flowed the inviting smell of my father’s secret-recipe soup. “Dinner in twenty minutes, Maya!” he called. But my eyes were fixed on the empty white space that seemed to ____22____ me. I pushed my chair back forcefully and ____23____ into the living room.
“Hit a wall?” father asked calmly. “More like a mountain! The theme is ‘Home’, but everything...” A heavy sigh (叹息) ____24____ me. “When I was your age, I struggled with ____25____. Wanted every picture to be perfect, to prove something.” He walked to the bookshelf, pulled out a dusty album (相册) and ____26____ black-and-white photos. They were ordinary, slightly out of focus — our messy kitchen, mom laughing with flour on her nose, me sleeping with the dog. Perfect but ____27____.
“You took these?” I asked. “My ‘Home’ series, but never ____28____ any competition,” father answered. I looked at the photos, and gradually something ____29____ inside me. The unforgettable gift was given to me by my best friend, Lily, on my 15th birthday. What makes it special is not the notebook itself but the story behind it.

David was new in town. It was his first day at Oakwood High School. During lunch, he sat alone at a table in the corner of the dining hall, quietly eating his sandwich. He watched groups of friends laughing and sharing stories, feeling a sharp loneliness in his chest.
Suddenly, a loud crash rang out through the room. Lily, the girl from her math class, tripped (绊倒) over a backpack, her plate flying into the air. Food flew everywhere — on the floor, on tables, and worst of all, all over Mark, the tenth-grade basketball star. And a large piece of chocolate cake was now sliding down his white shirt.
The hall fell silent for a second. Lily stood still, hands covering her mouth. She took a step forward, then stopped, frightened. “I... I’m so sorry!” She stammered in a low voice.
Mark looked down at his ruined shirt, his face turning red. Everyone expected Mark to get angry. Instead, he took a deep breath. He picked a piece of carrot from his hair, looked at it, and then glanced at Lily’s frightened eyes. A slow smile spread across his face. “I guess today’s ‘Wear Your Lunch’ day, and I’m the best-dressed!” His voice was loud enough for the nearby tables to hear. After removing the cake from his shirt, he knelt (跪下) to clean up, much relieved, hurried over to join him in picking up the mess.
David watched from his corner, sandwich forgotten, mixed feelings stirring inside him. He thought of his own loneliness, Lily’s awkwardness, and Mark’s kindness. What if he stopped hiding? What if he stopped waiting for others to reach out? Courage welled slowly inside him.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为80个左右;

Mark smiled and nodded at him, glad for the extra hand. David felt his loneliness fade away as he worked with them. After cleaning up, Mark invited him to sit with Lily and him for the rest of lunch. They talked about math class and basketball, and David finally felt like he belonged at Oakwood High School.

D The difficulty in making choices.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为80个左右;
He decided to do something.
