Stories Behind Famous Company Names
Inventor Caleb Bradham had originally wanted to be a doctor but started working in a drugstore when he returned home in North Carolina. In 1893, he made up (配制) what he first called “Brad’s Drink”, a mix of water, caramel, lemon oil and other flavors. Five years later, he renamed it Pepsi-Cola. He claimed the drink could help with digestion (消化). Afterwards, Bradham changed the term into the name Pepsi.
This luxury car-maker combined elements (要素) from the Ford and Oldsmobile companies when it was started in 1902 and later became known for its innovation and high quality. The company was named after the French explorer Cadillac, who founded the city of Detroit in 1701.
Company co-founder Gordon Bowker has said that while brainstorming names, someone brought out a map that featured the old mining town of Starbo. That may have led him to think of Starbuck, the first mate (大副) in Herman Melville’s famous novel, Moby Dick. Not only the company name but also the origin of its logo has aroused great curiosity.
The inventor of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf, was expecting to make an elegant, yet precise, wristwatch. He wanted a name that was easy to say, could work in different languages, and look good on the watches. He chose Rolex in 1908 after some consideration.
1. Pepsi has a history of ______.
A. over a hundred and twenty years B. about two hundred years
C. about three hundred years D. less than a hundred years
2. Who started to build a city at the beginning of the 18th century?

My first impression of Miss Vicki was a highly authoritative(权威的) person towering over me. She spoke in a loud voice and the earth shook whenever she marched. That was in the first year of high school. She was a knowledgeable literature teacher then. However, during my first year in school, she struck terror into my heart. And everyone else’s of course. Just the mention of her name made the most annoying classes silent.
However, the two years of junior high passed by rather quickly. Soon I went to senior high class. I had worked hard and got the subject combination that I wished for. Together with a group of old friends, I soon settled down in class comfortably.
To everyone’s surprise, she was fortunate enough to be my teacher that year. I was shocked when I heard the news. This time round, however, I decided not to hide in terror whenever she was near. I decided to face the fact. Instead of trying too hard to lick her boots , I tried my best to be my natural myself in front of her.
Still, I could not shake off the ice-cold impression that she put in my heart. True, her jokes sometimes sent me into fits of laughter, yet at other times these jokes simply fell flat the moment she told them . My lovely class, however, was always ready to laugh at the right time of her amusing stories. After all, we would not want to run the risk of making her angry.
Unluckily, life was not to remain boring. One day we received news that Miss Vicki was to leave Singapore for the Philippines where she would take part in a voluntary teaching program for the poor. We did not know what to say actually. All of us cried at the airport.

D. She had a strong sense of social responsibility.

Once upon a time, researchers dreamed of building a robot storyteller. It would not only entertain (娱乐) young children, but also help them learn well. This dream has come true. The robot is called Tega. It is cute and appears to be useful in increasing young children’s language skills. Developed by a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tega sounds like a child, makes its body and face full of life while storytelling and explains the tales on a screen with pictures.
In an eight-week experiment, Tega read picture books to 67 children aged from 4 to 6 in weekly meetings lasting an hour. During the meetings, Tega asked questions to have knowledge of the listeners’ language skills, tested them on a word’s meaning or asked them to describe a character. For example, Tega asked, “What do you think will happen to the boy?” Tega also recorded the facial expressions and body positions of the children to see how interested they were. For example, keeping the body forward was considered a good sign. After the book was finished, the children retold the story to Tega in their own words.
One group of kids played with a personalized version (版本) of the robot, which improved each time it interacted with the kids, learning about their language skills from the conversations they had. For this group, Tega chose which book to read based on what it thought would be most suitable for the children’s language level. Every second time, Tega would replace (替换) several words in the story for these children with more difficult words with similar meanings, such as “clamour” in place of “noise”.
A second group interacted with a non-personalized Tega that remembered the children each week, but chose stories to read at random (随机的) from its library of 81 picture books. For this group, the story difficulty increased every two weeks. A third group of kids didn’t interact with Tega at all.
Several weeks after the last meeting, the team found that all the children who played with Tega had increased their vocabularies (词汇), but the personalized group learned the most words. Their error rate on a vocabulary test dropped by 23 percent, almost double that of the non-personalized group. The stories that the children told back to the personalized robot were also longer and more wonderful, says team member Hae Won Park.
8. What do we know about Tega?
A. It has a voice of an adult.
B. It is connected to the Internet.
C. It can tell stories in a lively way.
D. It is mainly designed to entertain kids.
9. Why did Tega ask questions during the meetings?
A. To keep the kids interested.
B. To help kids better understand a story.
C. To know about the kids’ language skills.
D. To encourage the kids to think independently.
10. What do the results of the experiment show?
A. Children enjoy telling back stories to Tega.
B. Young kids really love interacting with others.
C. The robot needs to be improved to work better.
D. The personalized version of the robot helps kids most.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new invention for kids.
B. A personalized teaching method.
C. A new way to increase kids’ vocabularies.

Fishing tools that are thrown away are a serious danger to ocean life. These “ghost nets” continue to catch and kill animals even after being thrown away by fishermen. They either float in the water or sit on the seabed, causing great harm to sea wildlife.
The problem is highlighted by a single net found in Puget Sound in 2009. Within just six months, it had already caught over 450 salmon, 1,300 sharks, 1,800 birds, 16,900 crabs, and 11 seals. Scientists believe that 10 to 30 percent of all business fishing tools are lost or thrown away every year. This means countless nets remain in the ocean, killing sea animals nonstop.
However, an important program called Fishing for Energy is working to deal with it. It brings together several organizations, including Covanta Energy Company and the National Fish and Wildlife Organization. Since 2008, they have successfully taken away nearly four million pounds of lost fishing tools from the ocean.
Collecting lost fishing tools is a difficult task. It requires finding the tools underwater, pulling them up, and bringing them to coast. To make it easier, Fishing for Energy has set up collection sites at ports in nine states. They give free boxes where fishermen can put the recovered tools. The program also offers prizes to fishermen who take away fishing waste from the sea and provides them with free educational programs.
Once collected, the tools are recycled to make power for locals. Any metal parts made of materials like gold, silver or iron are taken away, and the materials left are turned into energy at special factories. The program has grown rapidly. It started with one disposal site (垃圾处理场) in Massachusetts in 2008 and now has 55 sites across twelve states. Fishermen are developing new ways to find more tools, and local groups are giving money to workshops to find better solutions. Additionally, the program supports the development of new technology that makes fish-catching tools stop working after a certain period, as required by law.
12. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. The ghost nets around Puget Sound caught 11 seals in total in 2009.
B. A large number of sea animals die because of ghost nets every year.
C. The problem caused by ghost nets is less serious than people imagine.
D. The ghost nets have covered around 20% of business fishing nets so far.
13. What does the underlined word “recovered” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Used. B. Collected. C. Repaired. D. bought.
14. What do we know about the “Fishing for Energy” program?
A. It helps local people to get more power. B. It has 56 waste treatment places in total.
C. It requires fishermen to buy the collection boxes. D. It provides fishermen with new fishing techniques.
15. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Ghost Nets: The Silent Killer for Sea Animals
B. Fishing for Energy: A Project for Producing Power
C. Ghost Nets: The Huge Treasure for Power Production
D. Fishing for Energy: A Program for Saving Ocean Life
B 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据第二段“Scientists believe that 10 to 30 percent of all business fishing tools are lost or thrown away every year. This means countless nets remain in the ocean, killing sea animals nonstop. (科学家认为,每年有10%到30%的商业渔具丢失或被丢弃。这意味着无数的渔网留在海洋中,不停地杀死海洋动物)”可知,每年都有大量的海洋动物因为幽灵网而死亡。故选B项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“To make it easier, Fishing for Energy has set up collection sites at ports in nine states. They give free boxes where fishermen can put the recovered tools. (为了方便起见,Fishing for Energy在九个州的港口设立了收集点。他们提供免费的箱子,渔民可以把回收的工具放在里面)”可知,渔民可以把收集到的渔具放在免费提供的箱子里,所以“recovered”意思是“收集到的”,与“collected”意思相近。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Once collected, the tools are recycled to make power for locals. (一旦收集起来,这些工具就会被回收利用,为当地人提供电力)”可知,Fishing for Energy项目帮助当地人获得更多的电力。故选A项。

This helps focus on what you really appreciate. By writing down what you appreciate, you’ll have more positive feelings. ____20____. It also means that you will have a record of all the good things you’ve experienced. You can read it when you’re having a bad day.
A. What is a gratitude diary

下文“Being thankful is a good way for you to deal with such negative feelings.(感恩是你处理这种消极情绪的好方法。)”

空格处是小标题的位置,下文“A gratitude diary is a diary or notebook in which you write down what you are thankful for.(感恩日记是一种日记或笔记本,你可以在上面写下你所感激的事情。)” 故选A项。
下文“It’s just something you can write in and keep(这就是你能写下来并且保存的内容)”提到了日记写作内容,B选项中just是关键词,意为“仅仅”,与下文呼应呼应,所以B选项“它不需要特别”符合题意。故选B项。
下文“The more detailed the questions are, the better your answer will be.(问题越详细,你的回答就越好。)”
上文“By writing down what you appreciate, you’ll have more positive feelings.(通过写下你感激的东西,你会有更积极的感觉。)”

D. A study carried out by researchers recently.
