This summer vacation, Li Mei went to a water park with her friends. She just started to swim, but she didn't wear a life jacket. When she swam to the deep (深的) water area (区域), she got tired and began to go down. Luckily, a lifeguard (救生员) saw it and saved her.
In August, five students went swimming in the Jialing River. When they played with water in the river, it started to rain. A villager saw them and shouted, "Keep away from the river! The rain is getting heavier, and the river will be soon flooded (泛滥)." After hearing this, they quickly swam to the bank. However, a boy didn't get to the bank in time. When the river flooded quickly, he was washed away. His friends got so worried. Some of them shouted for help and called 119. After a while, some villagers came with a long rope and a life ring (救生圈). Finally, the boy caught the rope and was saved.

Not long after, the mother arrived. She was very thankful to Debbie. After thanking her, she took the boy to the nearby hospital. Debbie got a strong feeling of satisfaction. Spring, when the sun shines warmly and plants grow, is also the worst allergy season. For many people, the beauty of spring comes with sneezing, coughing, and a runny nose.
This is largely because of pollen from plants. When winter ends, plants wake up and make lots of pollen. The wind blows the pollen everywhere.
Pollen is made by plants to help them reproduce. It's not meant to hurt us. But some people's immune systems (免疫系统) think pollen is bad. So, their bodies give out chemicals like histamine (人组胺). This causes allergy problems.
Because pollen is seasonal, the immune system doesn't get used to it being around. Then the immune system tries to protect the "self" against the "not-self". What's more, the pollen is so small that it can easily make its way into people's noses and lungs. This makes allergies even worse.
How a pollen allergy develops in the first place is still uncertain. Scientists only know that genetics (遗传学) is at least part of the reason. If parents have allergies, their children are more likely to have them. It's clear that the environment matters too. Many scientists say people growing up in an environment that's too clean are more likely to develop allergies.
Most people develop seasonal allergies sometime after becoming grown-ups. These allergies can come and go in a way that no one can predict. For some people, the allergies would suddenly go away in one spring after years of having them. But scientists still have no idea how or why this happens.
1.What can allergies cause according to the first paragraph?

2.Why do the immune systems of some people give out chemicals when there is pollen?

3.What factors (因素) play a role in whether a person develops pollen allergies?

4.What does the underlined word "this" in the last paragraph refer to?

5.What's your suggestion on how to keep from getting allergies?

五、任务型阅读 根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,计 10 分)
As we know, illnesses such as colds or flu can move from one person to another. But do you know that feelings, like being stressed, can be passed on too?
Dr Stephanie Preston from the University of Michigan led her team to do a study. They wanted to make sure if stress was passed on. In the study, people were asked to give a speech to a group of watchers. Those watchers didn't show any feelings during the speech. That made the speakers even more stressed than if they got bad words. After some time, even the researchers (研究人员) started feeling stressed from just watching the speeches. This made them strange and interested, so they decided to study more. They looked at saliva samples (唾液样本) to see the stress hormone cortisol (皮质醇激素). While speakers were stressed and had a lot of cortisol, watchers were stressed too and had a lot of cortisol as well. They named this situation "physiological resonance". It meant the speakers' stress was passed on to the watchers.
Though they make sure that stress can move from one person to another, there is still one question. Studies have looked into the speakers' voices and faces, but they haven't been clear about how someone's action causes another's stress.
When we talk or hang out with other people, we notice different signs showing their feelings. Those help us know if there's something wrong around us. If our neighbour seems stressed, we should be careful as it might affect (影响) us too. This ability to sense (感知) stress comes from our long history of living in groups. It is not just humans who do this. Animals can also tell when others around them are stressed. So quickly finding stress in others can help us. It keeps us away from problems before they get worse.
1.Why did Stephanie Preston's team do the study?
_________________________________________________________
2.What would happen to the watchers when the speakers became stressed?
_________________________________________________________
3.According to the study, what are they still not sure about?
_________________________________________________________
4.What do you think of the ability to sense stress for humans and animals? Why?
_________________________________________________________
5.Can others' stress make a difference to you? Give an example.
