If you have ever walked down the hallways of the school district building, chances are you have heard some sweet music being played from the music repair shop of Bruce Belo. Bruce Belo is not only the school district’s musical instrument repairman, but also a musician who plays most instruments. Bruce believes that music is the strongest instrument that touches hearts and that it is truly the common language connecting all of us. Repairing musical instruments is his way of showing the world his love for music.
At the age of 10, Bruce began learning how to play the saxophone (萨克斯管). After graduating from high school, Bruce studied at Allied Music, one of the largest musical instrument repair companies in the world. There, he learned from the pioneers (先驱) of this field how to repair instruments with extreme damage. For example, Bruce explained that one day a musician in Pittsburgh accidentally left his saxophone behind his car, and it was driven over, flattening it completely. Bruce was able to repair this instrument and make it look new.
Bruce even receives instruments for repair from all over the country, including professional musical groups in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Many of these instruments belong to musicians who have played for famous singers such as Aretha Franklin, Phil Collins, and Michael Bublé.

Kids have pets of all kinds: dogs, cats, and fish. But have you ever heard of pet trees? Eighty fourth-grade students at the Bronx Community Charter School planted 40 young trees and took care of them for eight weeks. The program, called “A Tree Grows in the Bronx”, was part of an effort to recover the native plant habitat along the Bronx River in New York.
The Bronx River travels 23 miles from Westchester, New York, through the Bronx, which is part of New York City. It is the only freshwater river in New York City and is a place where people can fish and enjoy nature. However, some invasive (入侵的) plants were preventing native trees from growing along the river’s banks.
The New York City Parks and the Bronx Community Charter School got together and created a plan. They wanted to remove the invasive plants and replace them with native trees. Therefore, four fourth-grade classrooms got to take care of 10 young trees each for eight weeks.
They watered them and kept them alive and well until it was time to plant them outdoors. They also spent those weeks learning about the importance of trees to the environment. They learned that trees can prevent soil (土壤) from being washed away. In addition, trees can cool the air. Trees also take in CO2 from the air and produce O2.
The fourth-grade students also got to name their trees when they planted them! After taking care of their “pet” trees for eight weeks, many students were sad to leave them after planting them near the river, even though they knew that’s where the trees belonged. “There were very emotional goodbyes when the students planted their pet trees in the woods and had to go back to their school,” said Michelle A. Luebke, head of the program. “Students promised their trees they would come back to visit them often.”
For these fourth graders, learning about trees and their benefits was personal and fun. Now, they are environmental caretakers!
8. What was the problem facing the Bronx River?
A. Overuse of it for fishing. B. Short of trees on its banks.
C. Too much demand for its freshwater. D. Spread of non-native plant species.
9. What did the students learn about the trees during the 8 weeks?
A. Their environmental roles. B. Their suitable habitats.
C. Their different varieties. D. Their naming methods.
10. Why did the students become emotional according to paragraph 5?
A. They felt bad about taking part in outdoor activities.
B. They were dissatisfied with the project’s final result.
C. They developed a personal relationship with the trees.
D. They preferred hands-on projects to classroom learning.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Park Grows by the Bronx River
B. Kids’ Pet Trees Come Alive in the Bronx
C. Students Study Trees in New York Schools
D. City Volunteers Help Clean the Bronx River

UNCG Professor Eric Drollette begins each semester in the same, unexpected way. He asks, “Does anybody here get up at 4 am to milk cows?”
His question reminds students that school success can come from a variety of backgrounds. It was Drollette’s own childhood experience working on his family’s farm that led to his curiosity about the benefits of exercise. “I was always working and spending so much time farming that it was hard to manage school at the same time, but I still succeeded,” says Drollette. “I began to wonder if there is a connection between movement and the way we think.”
“Physical education and physical activity are good for our rising generation. It’s good for brain health and educational achievement,” he says. “What can we do to fit it into their daily lives?”
Adding exercise into a child’s day is a matter of increasing importance, as break time is reported to have declined in some schools. At the same time, many schools are encouraging teachers to give students regular (定期的) movement breaks.
Past studies have focused on more equipment-based (依赖器材的) exercises, but these types of movement are challenging to do in a classroom. Drollette and his team studied whether just nine minutes of desk-side-friendly exercises could help children do well in school. Their short period of exercises includes high knees, jumping jacks, and air squats (徒手深蹲). Children aged 9 — 12 years did each for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of rest in a lab.
As Drollette and his team published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise, when 25 students took part in these exercises, they scored a lot higher on a standardized test measuring reading ability compared to when they were sitting and watching an educational video before taking the test.
“Teachers and educators that I talk to look at that and say, ‘Wow, there’s something short and easy to do that can really help improve children’s scores,’” says Drollette.“I get a lot of surprise on the public end that something so simple and so short can be so useful in a classroom.”
12. What inspired Drollette to research exercise?
A. His educational achievement in college.
B. His early experience of hard physical work.
C. His observation of students’ exercise habits.
D. His doubt about equipment-based exercises.
13. What does the underlined word “declined” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Checked. B. Balanced. C. Reduced. D. Stopped.
14. Which part of Drollette’s study differs from earlier research?
A. The equipment required for exercise.
B. The school scores of the students.
C. The type of exercises used.
D. The age of children.
15. What is the teachers’ attitude toward Drollette’s findings?
A. Concerned. B. Positive. C. Unsupportive. D. Unclear.

D. Unclear.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. B

At the same time, many schools are encouraging teachers to give students regular
根据第五段“Past studies have focused on more equipment-based (依赖器材的) exercises, but these types of movement are challenging to do in a classroom. Drollette and his team studied whether just nine minutes of desk-side-friendly exercises could help children do well in school.(过去的研究主要集中在更多依赖器材的运动上,但这类运动在教室里很难开展。Drollette和他的团队研究了仅九分钟适合在课桌旁进行的运动是否能帮助孩子们在学校取得好成绩)”可知,Drollette研究中使用的运动类型与早期研究不同。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Teachers and educators that I talk to look at that and say, ‘Wow, there’s something short and easy to do that can really help improve children’s scores,’” says Drollette.“I get a lot of surprise on the public end that something so simple and so short can be so useful in a classroom.”(德罗利特说:“与我交流过的教师和教育工作者看到这些后会说,‘哇,竟然有这种简短又容易操作的事情,还真能帮助提高孩子们的成绩呢。’公众这边也让我很惊喜,这么简单、时间又短的活动在课堂上居然能如此有用。”)”可知,老师们对Drollette的发现持积极态度。故选B项。
