Fun-loving, sociable, beautiful — if Cape Town were on Facebook, that’s her description. But Cape Town is perhaps most popular for “mountain” known as Africa’s adventure playground. Sitting in the heart of a vast ecosystem of beautiful plants and animals, Table Mountain features a 3-km flat top that boasts one of Africa’s most breathtaking views, ideal for amateur (业余的) and experienced photographers alike. For many people, getting to the mountain’s flat top is most of the fun.
1. Cable-way
Table Mountain is often covered by special clouds that form when wind blows up the slopes into colder air, causing wet air to freeze into what looks like a “tablecloth.” Legend attributes this phenomenon to a pirate (海盗) called Van Hunks, the Devil and a local tobacco contest between them. On clear days, the lucky tourists can ride a cable car from the base of the mountain to the beautiful flat top. To date, more than 20 million visitors have ridden this 360-degree cable car system.
2. Hiking
Numerous hiking paths offer tourists various levels of climbing difficulty up the face of the mountain. A typical climb takes about two and a half hours, but plan for longer depending on weather; which can change very suddenly. Take at least a litre of water with you, and wear strong, comfortable shoes — the paths are characteristically stony and uneven.
3. Caving, Rock Climbing, and Mountain Biking
Caving, rock climbing and mountain biking are very popular pastimes on Table Mountain, with well-sandstone caves pointing to steep paths, unusual routes, and adventure for various levels of expertise. Go as a group, or hire a guide to show you the ropes.

On a Saturday morning, five teenage reporters filed into a busy New York office, red pens in hand, for a two-hour working session. They carefully improved articles for The Ditch Weekly — a seasonal newspaper entirely written and edited by 13-to-17-year-olds — tightening awkward sentences and changing adjectives to perfect their first issue of the year.
Fifteen-year-old editor Billy Stern monitored progress using a color-coded planning document on his computer, which tracked completed articles including features on local summer camps and the construction of a new hospital on a former baseball field. Turning to his 15-year-old friend Teddy Rattray, the paper’s best columnist (专栏作者), he sought ideas for an upcoming restaurant review. “We still haven’t done hot dogs,” Teddy suggested with a smile.
The operation has grown significantly smoother since the boys launched their newspaper last year. Billy initially sought a summer job more challenging than his usual work at a food truck, and after publishing 10 successful issues last summer, the team continued this year — plotting their comeback during English class discussions and late-night FaceTime calls.
Now with a staff of 20 teenagers, their ambitious goals include distributing (分配) 2,000 weekly copies funded entirely through local advertising. Determined to maintain complete independence from parental involvement, they have a deeper mission: to encourage young people to disconnect from screens and revive (复苏) the print journalism.
Though launching a print publication amid (处于……状况中) industry-wide decline might seem unconventional, Billy conducted thorough research before launching in 2023. After giving up ideas like beach food vending, he asked printers for production costs and studied The Star’s advertising rates to create a practical business model. “The numbers worked out,” he noted confidently.
Despite ongoing industry challenges, The Ditch Weekly has achieved remarkable profits. While declining to reveal exact figures, the paper says staff writers earn $50-$70 per article, with weekly printing costs averaging $9,000.
4 The author uses the example of “tracking completed articles with a color-coded document” in Paragraph 2 mainly to ______.
A. highlight Billy’s organizational skills
B. criticize inefficient editing processes
C. compare teenage and adult work habits
D. explain the newspaper’s digital transition
5. Which of the following best describes Billy Stern based on the passage?
A. Impractical. B. Ambitious. C. Cautious. D. Stubborn.
6. What do the teenagers emphasize in running The Ditch Weekly?
A. Parental financial support for printing costs.
B. Digital expansion over print distribution.
C. Complete independence and community impact.
D. Maximizing profits for personal gain.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The decline of traditional print media in New York.
B. Challenges faced by young businessmen in media.
C. The history of student-run newspapers in the United States.
D. Teenagers’ innovative approach to independent journalism.

With a maximum life of more than 200 years the bowhead whale lives longer than other animals. But how they survive so long has never been fully explained. Now scientists have found clues of an answer and plan to see whether the same biological trick can be performed in humans.
All living animals suffer DNA damage throughout their lives. Cells attempt to mend the damage, but the repairs are not always effective. This leads to mutations (变异) building up , which can raise the risk of cancer and drive ageing by weakening cell function.
Vera Gorbunova, a biologist, and her colleagues found that bowhead whales were particularly good at repairing a form of DNA damage in which both strands (链) of the DNA double helix (DNA双螺旋) are broken. As a result, the whales have fewer mutations. “What we’re finding is that these kinds of repairs are very important for long life,” she said. Through a series of experiments on whale cells, they showed that DNA repair is enhanced by a protein called CIRBP, which is started by cold exposure. Bowhead whales spend their lives in Arctic waters and produce 100 times more CIRBP than humans. “This strategy, which does not eliminate (消除) damaged cells but faithfully repairs them, may be contributing to the exceptional long life and low cancer rates in the bowhead whale,” the researchers wrote in Nature.
The team went on to explore what happened when they increased levels of CIRBP in human cells. Boosting the protein doubled the efficiency of the repair work that cells do to double-strand breaks. Further experiments on flies (苍蝇) showed that extra CIRBP increased their lifetime and made them more resilient to mutations.
How big a role DNA repair plays in the bowhead whale’s longer lifetime is unclear. They hope to test whether cold-water swimmers, or those who take cold showers, have raised levels of the protein.
8. What type of DNA damage are bowhead whales particularly good at repairing?
A. Single-strand breaks in DNA.
B. Damage to a protein called CIRBP.
C. Mutations caused by cold exposure.
D. Double-strand breaks in the DNA double helix.
9 What can be inferred about the protein CIRBP from the passage?
A. Its production is influenced by environmental temperature.
B. It is unique to bowhead whales and not found in other species.
C. It eliminates damaged cells to prevent cancer in whales.
D. It functions more efficiently in human cells than in whale cells.
10. The underlined word “resilient” is similar in meaning to ______.
A. sensitive B. sustainable C. resistant D. responsive
11. Which of the following is the best title?
A. Do Bowhead Whales Live Longer than Humans?
B. Can Bowhead Whales Help Us Live Longer?
C. Can CIRBP Repair Stop Us from Dying?
D. Does Cold Exposure Increase CIRBP?
D
Travel isn’t always enjoyable, especially with young children. Airports with endless security lines, never-ending car rides with noisy kids, and public meltdowns (哭闹) in snack shops can easily turn a much-anticipated trip into moments of regret. Yet these challenges are eventually worthwhile — travel transforms our worldview by placing us in someone else’s “normal”. When we encounter foreign street signs, taste unfamiliar cuisines, or hear conversations in unknown languages, we’re vividly reminded that our way of life is just one of the rich human lifestyles.
For teenagers, this shift in perspective develops sympathy, tolerance, and intellectual curiosity. They begin questioning cultural norms: Why do people queue differently here? How has this society’s history shaped their daily habits? Even seemingly small challenges — exploring a complex subway system or understanding a menu written in another language — build strong personalities and problem-solving abilities. These experiences teach them to adapt, communicate across differences, and trust their own judgment in unfamiliar situations.
Younger children gain simpler but equally greater benefits: patience while waiting in lines, flexibility when plans change unexpectedly, and courage to try new things. A child who helps pack their suitcase, carries their own backpack, or selects a daily activity learns practical responsibility. Shared family moments — whether watching a breathtaking sunrise over a mountain or finding their way back to the hotel together after getting lost — create lasting memories that strengthen emotional bonds. The true value of travel lies not in checking off tourist attractions but in being fully present. Choose one core purpose for your trip — exploring history, connecting with nature, or simply enjoying family time — and build your itinerary (行程) around that. Remember, meaningful travel doesn’t require a plane ticket; day trips to nearby towns, cultural festivals in your city, or even visits to different neighborhoods can offer similar growth. The real journey begins not at a distant destination, but at the edge of your comfort zone.
12. What do teenagers gain from small travel challenges?
A. Problem-solving abilities. B. Cooking skills.
C. Language fluency. D. Driving skills.
13. What can be inferred about meaningful travel?
A. It needs long distance. B. It requires plane tickets.
C. It can be local trips. D. It must be expensive.
14. What strengthens family bonds during travel?
A. Shared moments. B. Tourist attractions. C. Strict itineraries. D. Expensive gifts.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The challenges of traveling with young children.
B. Why international travel is superior to local exploration.
C. The importance of planning detailed itineraries for family trips.
D. How travel broadens perspectives and develops personal growth.

I used to believe that “meaningful life” required grand achievements — prizes, promotions, or viral social media posts. ____16____ On a gray Saturday morning, I wandered into the community park, my mind heavy with midterm stress and a sense of unmet expectations. That’s when I noticed them: two elderly men seated on a weathered bench, absorbed in a game of Chinese chess.
Their moves were slow but deliberate. Mr. Li, with silver hair and a faded jacket, would stroke his chin for minutes before placing a piece. Across from him, Mr. Wang, leaning on a cane (拐杖), would nod thoughtfully, then respond with a soft “Check.” Neither seemed in a hurry; the game unfolded like a quiet conversation. ____17____ Their focus fixed on the wooden board between them.
I sat on a nearby bench, observing. What actually struck me wasn’t their skill, but their presence. ____18____ In a world that glorifies (颂扬) busyness, they reminded me that purpose can be found in the simplest routines.
When Mr. Li finally smiled and said, “You win this round,” Mr. Wang laughed, “Tomorrow, I’ll take back my title.” It was then I realized: happiness isn’t about finishing first. ____19____
____20____ We chase the next big thing while missing the beauty in front of us. The chess players taught me that meaning often hides in the ordinary: a shared laugh, a slow afternoon, a game played not for victory, but for connection.
A. Chess requires both strategy and patience to master.
B. Yet last month, an ordinary moment taught me otherwise.
C. Too often, we measure life by successes rather than moments.
D. Social media has made it easier to appreciate real-life interactions.
E. They weren’t chasing success — just enjoying the moment together.
F. Passersby occasionally stopped to watch, but the men paid no attention.
G. It’s about showing up, fully and sincerely, for the people and activities that matter.

Once a man named Bryan Anderson was driving down a deserted road in the dim evening light when he spotted an elderly lady stuck by the roadside. For hours, no one had stopped to help her, so when Bryan came near with a smile, she grew nervous, thinking the simply-dressed man might try to hurt her.
Seeing her fear, Bryan slowed down and spoke gently, telling her his name and making sure her he meant no harm. Unwillingly, the lady said her car had a flat tire and she had no idea how to repair it. Bryan suggested she wait in his warm car to keep away from the cold while he changed the tire. He got his toolbox and worked quickly, finishing the job in minutes.
As he closed the trunk (后备箱) the lady thanked him sincerely, explaining she was from a distant city and just passing through. She then asked how much she should pay for his timely help. Bryan refused the offer with a smile, saying he was only doing what any decent person would do. Instead of taking money, he told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, she should help someone in need the next time she got a chance, and see that small act of kindness as payment for his help.
On her way to her destination, the lady saw a small cafe and stopped for a meal before the last part of her journey. After she sat down, a young waitress with a big smile came over, giving her a clean towel to wipe her wet hair made damp by the evening light rain. The lady soon noticed the waitress was heavily pregnant yet still kept busy serving customers with patience.
“Why are you still working so hard in the later stage of your pregnancy?” the old lady asked.
“This is life,” the waitress sighed (叹气), “my husband and I were in desperate need of money. It will be tough for us financially with the baby coming very soon.”

4. The author uses the example of “tracking completed articles with a color-coded document” in Paragraph 2 mainly to ______.
A. highlight Billy’s organizational skills
B. criticize inefficient editing processes
C. compare teenage and adult work habits
D. explain the newspaper’s digital transition

With a maximum life of more than 200 years, the bowhead whale lives longer than other animals.
9. What can be inferred about the protein CIRBP from the passage?
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. B

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. D

As he closed the trunk (后备箱), the lady thanked him sincerely, explaining she was from a distant city and just passing through.

After finishing her meal, she called the waitress over gently and handed her an envelope with a warm smile. “This is for you, my dear,” she said softly, refusing to let the waitress decline. “You’re working so hard to support your family, and this small help may ease your burden a little.” She then told the waitress about Bryan’s help and his request to pass on kindness. Tears filled the waitress’s eyes as she thanked the old lady, feeling the warmth of strangers surrounding her.
Paragraph 2:
Later that evening, the waitress told her husband the touching experience. As she took out the envelope and counted the money inside, her voice trembled with emotion. She shared how the elderly lady had helped her and the story of Bryan’s kindness. Her husband pulled her into a tight hug, moved by the chain of warmth. “We must remember this,” he said firmly. “When we get through this hard time, we’ll help others in need too, just like Bryan and that kind lady.” That night, the couple felt hopeful, knowing that a small act of kindness could light up the darkness and warm the world.
