C A new study published in JAMA Network Open shows that, compared to aerobic activities like jogging and swimming, Tai Chi is more effective in reducing blood pressure in people with prehypertension The study involved 342 adults with prehypertension, whose average age was 49. Researchers divided them into two groups. One group took part in guided aerobic exercises, such as jogging, climbing stairs and cycling. The other group was trained to practice Tai Chi. Both groups exercised for one hour, four times every week. After 12 months, those in the Tai Chi group saw bigger drops in blood pressure than those in the aerobic exercise group. What’s more, nearly 22% of the people who practiced Tai Chi saw their blood pressure return to normal levels, compared with nearly 16% of people in the aerobic exercise group. Fewer people in the Tai Chi group developed hypertension too. Ruth Taylor-Piliae, a nursing professor from the University of Arizona, explained why. “Tai Chi helps relax your whole body and mind,” she said. “Its calming and meditative (冥想的) nature plays a key role in lowering blood pressure.” She also noted the convenience of Tai Chi: “I think the beauty of this practice is that you don’t have to have a special gym membership, and you don’t have to have special clothing. Once you learn Tai Chi, you can do it anytime and anyplace. And it does provide that calming, relaxing effect.” Tai Chi is believed to help prevent memory loss and improve brain function. However, experts stress that practicing regularly is important to gain the full benefits. As Taylor-Piliae notes, “It’s not enough to try it just once or twice; it is important to make it a routine.” 8. What’s the result of the study after one year? A. The Tai Chi group showed greater drops in blood pressure. B. More people in the Tai Chi group developed hypertension. C. The aerobic exercise group showed greater drops in blood pressure. D. Fewer people in the aerobic exercise group developed hypertension. 9. According to Ruth Taylor-Piliae, why is it convenient to practice Tai Chi? A. It needs special clothing. B. It needs no special place. C It must be practiced in a gym. D. It requires experts’ daily guidance. 10. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Doing Tai Chi just a few times brings full benefits. B. Regular practice is important for Tai Chi to work fully. C. Tai Chi is the most helpful exercise for reducing blood pressure. D. Prehypertensive people should only do Tai Chi instead of other exercises. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Tai Chi is Beneficial for All. B. Tai Chi leads to Better Memory. C. Tai Chi Reduces Blood Pressure. D. Tai Chi is the Key to Good Health. D An online research showed that people believed having the choice to jump through parts of a video or switch (转换) to a different one could make watching videos less boring — the exact reason why people use TikTok or YouTube. But researchers have found that switching to another video or jumping forwards and backwards in the same one, actually makes people more bored. Dr. Kate Tam at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the lead author of the research, explained that boredom (无聊) is closely connected to our ability to pay attention. “We feel bored when there is a gap between how focused we are and how focused we want to be,” she said. When people keep moving quickly through videos, they become less focused with the videos and start looking for something more exciting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom. To test this idea, the researchers did an experiment which involved over 500 undergraduates. One group watched a single 10-minute video without the choice of switching, while the other group have the choice to click (点击) between several five-minute videos. The results showed that those who could choose between videos felt more bored. “Our research shows that while people switch videos fast to avoid boredom, this behaviour can actually make them feel more bored,” Dr. Tam concluded. She compared the experience to watching a movie in a cinema, where immersion leads to enjoyment. Similarly, true enjoyment from online videos often comes from focusing ourselves in the videos, not from endlessly moving quickly through it. This finding suggests that, sometimes, having fewer choices might actually be better for our focus and enjoyment. 12. Why does the author mention the online research in paragraph 1? A. To introduce the new finding. B. To support an old idea. C. To show the author’s opinion. D. To give an interesting example. 13. In Dr. Tam’s experiment, how did the researchers test their idea? A. By recording the length of different videos. B. By asking people about their favorite videos. C. By checking how long people could focus on a video. D. By comparing groups with and without the choice to switch. 14. What does the underlined word “immersion” in the last paragraph mean? A. Full attention. B. Great pleasure. C. Short memory. D. Quick response. 15. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Watching videos on TikTok or YouTube brings fun. B. Boredom mainly results from focusing on long videos. C. Switching videos increases rather than reduces boredom. D. Watching videos in cinemas is more enjoyable than watching online. It is one of the most famous books in the world; yet it has no story and no interesting characters no exciting beginning and no satisfying ending. ____16____ This strangely popular book is one of the most famous dictionaries in the English-speaking world, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). I ran to my room and started drawing, which always made me feel better. The next day, Anna was happy but couldn’t hide her nervousness, keeping asking me to go with her to the rehearsal (排练). I hesitated but finally agreed, knowing she needed the support. At the concert hall, Ms. Harper was talking to the actors. I sat in the third row, wishing I were in my room drawing. Then, Ms. Harper moved a brown cardboard piece onto the center of the stage, with small windows and doors on it. How simple. the stage sets (舞台布景) were! I thought to myself. When the music started, Anna and the actor playing the prince began dancing. After the rehearsal, Ms. Harper praised them. However, they were not satisfied with the simple cardboard castle, saying they preferred real sets. Ms. Harper explained that they had to do with it as there was no art teacher at the school this year. Then Anna and I walked outside. I praised her for her wonderful performance. “Thanks,” Anna said. “But did you see the sets?” I hesitated before saying slowly. “Maybe there’s something I can do — along with many art-loving students.” That night, I kept drawing, late into the night. As my pencil moved, a bigger castle and a prettier carriage (马车) with wheels appeared on the paper. The next morning, I ran to Ms. Harper’s office, where I showed her my painting and explained my idea. “I could help with the stage sets,” I said nervously and eagerly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Finally, the big day for the performance arrived. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025年秋季学期普通高中期末质量检测 高一英语(试题卷) (时长:120分钟 满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. The study involved 342 adults with prehypertension, whose average age was 49. C. It must be practiced in a gym. C. But researchers have found that switching to another video, or jumping forwards and backwards in the same one, actually makes people more bored. D Watching videos in cinemas is more enjoyable than watching online. A 13. D 14. A 15. Mom asked me after the tryouts (选拔赛), “How was it going?” “Terrible,” I replied. “Anna got Cinderella’s part!” “What part will you play?” Mom continued. “None,” I whispered, holding back tears. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 “I could help with the stage sets,” I said nervously and eagerly. Ms. Harper’s eyes lit up with surprise and then with hope. “That would be wonderful, Emily!” she exclaimed. Over the next few weeks, I rallied a team of art-loving students, and we worked tirelessly on creating elaborate sets. We painted, cut, and glued, transforming the simple cardboard into a grand castle and a beautiful carriage. The concert hall buzzed with excitement as we unveiled our creations, and even Anna was amazed by the transformation. Finally, the big day for the performance arrived. As the lights dimmed and the music began, Anna stepped onto the stage. The audience gasped in awe as they saw the magnificent sets we had created. The performance went flawlessly. After the final curtain call, the audience erupted into applause, and Anna rushed over to hug me. “Thank you, Emily,” she whispered, tears of joy in her eyes. “You made this dream come true for all of us.” I smiled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over me. 词汇激活 行为类 ①大声说:exclaim/yell ②转变:transform/convert ③上台:step onto the stage/appear on the stage 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprise/astonishment ②兴奋:excitement/thrill 【点睛】[高分句型1] The concert hall buzzed with excitement as we unveiled our creations, and even Anna was amazed by the transformation.
