Hanson, a 68-year-old teacher, discovered a group of seahorses off Long Beach by chance and built a secret world for them.
The story of this seahorse world dates back to a day in June 2016, when he watched in horror as more than 100 high school students were playing in the waters, right where seahorses usually lived.
“I thought, I got to do something,” he says. To protect them, he decided to build a safe home. Using leaves and tree branches, he created a world at the bottom of the sea — his very own seahorse city in a deeper, safer place. Thankfully, the seahorses soon moved in.
Although not a scientist, Hanson visits his “kids” every five days, often making the two-hour trip in the middle of the night. He keeps detailed notes on each dive in a colorful notebook. He knows each seahorse by name and personality. “Getting to know these strange animals has greatly affected my life,” he says. “It has made me a better human being.”
Later, Hanson was joined by Amy, a diving coach and former soldier who felt better through diving. Now they protect the seahorses together. “We call them our kids because we love them so much,” Amy says.
They keep the place confidential to avoid attracting visitors that could damage the seahorses’ home. But if Hanson guides you down, you might see an orange, quiet creature with a thin mouth, totally still in the dark water. To see a seahorse in the wild is to feel special and amazed, as if you’ve just seen a unicorn (独角兽) under the sea.
4. What caused Hanson to build the seahorse city?
A. The discovery of a group of seahorses. B. The poor water quality of Long Beach.
C. A scene of students playing in the waters. D. A recommendation from a diving coach.
5. How do the seahorses affect Hanson?
A. They help him become a scientist. B. They turn him into a better person.
C. They make him famous worldwide. D. They bring him unexpected wealth.
6. What does the underlined word “confidential” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Secret. B. Clean. C. Recorded. D. Damaged.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Hanson?
A. Kind and famous. B. Brave and patient.
C. Careful and quiet. D. Helpful and caring.

Every year, Halloween drives the sale of $3.9 billion on candy in the United States. But that’s not the only impressive data related to trick-or-treating.
Several years after World War II, a woman in Philadelphia had an idea — what if kids also asked for coins to donate to UNICEF, the U.N. agency (机构) that protects the rights of children worldwide. This year marks the 75th anniversary (周年纪念) of that proposal, called Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. And some $200 million has been collected during that time period.
“We want to raise awareness for the importance of protecting children — making sure they’re healthy and that they’re well fed,” said Shelley, a spokesperson of UNICEF. “It is believed that in an imperfect world, it’s best to support those in need however we can. And that includes Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, which has the added advantage of getting kids interested in “their fellow children worldwide”.
The start of the program goes back to the late 1940s. After World War II, hunger swept over the globe, including Europe and parts of Asia. When Mary Emma saw well-fed American kids trick or treating on Halloween, she had an idea. These kids could be doing something really meaningful instead of just collecting candies for themselves. She decided to turn this into something good.
The program was a hit. “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF spread like a wildfire,” said Monroe, Mary’s son. “And the children who take part in it get as much out of this as the people receiving it.”
8. Why does the author mention candy sales in Paragraph 1?
A. To make a point. B. To show an example.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To explain a tradition.
9. What is the program about?
A. Schools raise money through candy sales. B. Kids collect coins for charity on Halloween.
C. Children exchange candies for books and toys. D. UNICEF organizes Halloween parties for kids.
10. What does Mary Emma want to show through the program?
A. Giving is receiving. B. Easier said than done.
C. Still waters run deep. D. Practice makes perfect.
11. What does Monroe think of the program to US kids?
A. Worthwhile. B. Formal. C. Addicting. D. Challenging.

A lucid dream is a dream in which you are aware that you’re dreaming. In this unique state, you can either take some control over what happens or simply watch as it continues, while you know it isn’t real. Many people describe the experience as both acting in a movie and watching it at the same time.
For those who usually experience nightmare (噩梦), lucid dreaming offers a special advantage. A 2023 research shows that once dreamers recognize they’re in a dream, they can stop the frightening story on purpose and give it a new ending. This ability to change their dreams can lower how often nightmares happen.
But the value of lucid dreams isn’t only about control. “Some people who have lucid dreams don’t want to change the dream — they want to explore the dream and see what it offers them,” notes Antonio, a professor at the University of Montreal. “It’s a way of exploring your own mind and opening chances to connect with different parts of your inner self.”
Lucid dreaming can also be a lot of fun. As brain scientist Benjamin says, “It’s like stepping into your own personal digital world.” This unique form of mental (精神的) playground allows for adventures and creative experiences within the safety of your own mind.
While lucid dreaming opens up interesting possibilities, researchers remind us it requires proper guidance to avoid possible sleep problems. With continued study, this unique dream state may offer even more ways to improve our waking lives through the power of our sleeping minds.
12. How can lucid dreaming help people with nightmares?
A. By helping them to forget nightmares. B. By preventing them from daydreaming.
C. By offering them a mental playground. D. By allowing them to change nightmares.
13. What may Antonio suggest lucid dreamers do?
A. Change their dreams to be more positive. B. Explore the dreams to understand themselves.
C. Avoid nightmares by controlling their dreams. D. Use lucid dreams to solve their daily problems.
14. What may researchers study next about lucid dreams?
A. How to control dreams completely. B. How to make them more interesting.
C. How to use them to better our real life. D. How to turn dreams into lucid dreams.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Advantages of Lucid Dreams B. The Ways to Solve Sleep Problems
C. The Unique State of Lucid Dreams D. The Latest Research About Dreams

Baby Names That Are not Allowed Around the World
Every country in the world has slightly different laws on names you can and can’t give your baby. Some parents try to be funny or special, but the government says, “No!” Here are four true stories of names that were stopped by the law.
Nutella (France)
Hey we love Nutella as much as anyone. ____16____ It seems a little extreme. Two French parents said that they’d chosen the name because they hoped that their daughter would be sweet and popular like the chocolate spread. French lawmakers, however, weren’t having it. Some judges said the name would only bring unfriendly jokes. ____17____
Robocop (Mexico)
Sonora, a state in Northwestern Mexico, has a long list of specific baby names that parents cannot give their children. The list was made to protect children from bullying (欺凌). ____18____ Although the government is unable to change the existing names of children, it stops future children from being named after the robotic police officer in movies. Other names on the list include “Facebook” and “Batman”.
Cyanide (England)
England doesn’t have too many laws about baby naming. But when one British mother tried to name her lovely daughter after this well-known poison, the government decided to step in. ____19____ Only in very extreme cases will the law stop a name, and this was one of them.
@ (China)
____20____ But the parents actually did have a reason. Somewhat, in China, people call this symbol “ai-ta,” which sounds very similar to a Chinese expression meaning “love him.” Whether you think that’s embarrassing or kind of sweet, Chinese law says names cannot use symbols. The name was banned.
A. But name your child after it?
B. Every parent wants their kid to stand out.
C. In China, one couple tried to name their baby boy “@”.
D. Naming a baby after “@” might be the strangest example.
E. They ruled that the parents had to change her name to Ella.
F. A judge said this name was too dangerous and could hurt the child.
G. However, most names on the list had been used on some unlucky children.

A. To make a point. B. To show an example.

9. What is the program about?

Hey, we love Nutella as much as anyone.
B Every parent wants their kid to stand out.
A 17. E 18. G 19. F 20. C

根据上文“Hey, we love Nutella as much as anyone.(嘿,我们和任何人一样喜欢那款多益巧克力酱)”以及后文“It seems a little extreme. Two French parents said that they’d chosen the name because they hoped that their daughter would be sweet and popular like the chocolate spread. French lawmakers, however, weren’t having it. Some judges said the name would only bring unfriendly jokes.(这似乎有点太过分了。两位法国父母表示,他们选择这个名字是因为希望自己的女儿能像巧克力酱那样甜美且受欢迎。然而,法国的立法者并不认同这种做法。一些法官表示,这个名字只会招来不友好的玩笑)”可知,前文说大家都喜欢能多益巧克力酱,后文转折说法国父母用它取名的做法被反对,A项“但你会以它来给孩子取名吗?”以反问衔接,承接对巧克力酱的喜爱,引出“用其取名”的争议,符合前后语义转折。故选A。
根据上文“It seems a little extreme. Two French parents said that they’d chosen the name because they hoped that their daughter would be sweet and popular like the chocolate spread. French lawmakers, however, weren’t having it. Some judges said the name would only bring unfriendly jokes.(这似乎有点太过分了。
根据上文“Sonora, a state in Northwestern Mexico, has a long list of specific baby names that parents cannot give their children. The list was made to protect children from bullying
根据上文“England doesn’t have too many laws about baby naming. But when one British mother tried to name her lovely daughter after this well-known poison, the government decided to step in.(英格兰对于婴儿取名并没有太多相关规定。但当一位英国母亲试图以这种广为人知的毒药来为她可爱的女儿命名时,政府决定介入处理此事)”可知,前文讲英国母亲想用地名“氰化物(剧毒物质)”给女儿取名,政府介入干预,F项“一名法官表示,这个名字太危险了,可能会伤害到孩子”给出法官干预的原因——名字危险、会伤害孩子,契合英国仅在极端情况下禁止取名的语境。故选F。
【20题详解】
根据后文“But the parents actually did have a reason. Somewhat, in China, people call this symbol “ai-ta,” which sounds very similar to a Chinese expression meaning “love him.” Whether you think that’s embarrassing or kind of sweet, Chinese law says names cannot use symbols. The name was banned.(但这些家长其实是有原因的。

故填Preventing/To prevent。
