Global warming is mainly driven by greenhouse gases, but nature fights back with carbon sinks, places that absorb more carbon than they release.
Forests are one of these natural carbon sinks. However, they are difficult to study thoroughly, especially in the complex landscapes of China. With so many plant types, measuring each one takes a lot of time and effort.
To solve this problem, two students from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Middle School in Zhongshan, Guangdong, built a predictive model. Their idea won the Excellent Poster Award at the 2025 International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS).
“We’ve learned that trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen through photosynthesis (光合作用),” said 17-year-old Ouyang Anduo, one of the students who won the award. “But this was our first time studying a forest, a complex system with many factors to consider.”
To narrow the scope, they focused on one very important factor — forest canopy (冠层) height. This factor shows the forest’s health, helping people understand its carbon storage and adjust their strategies to maintain ecological balance, protect species diversity, regulate climate and more.
Forest canopy height directly affects the accuracy of carbon storage estimation and biodiversity assessment, but it can be influenced by many variables, which makes it difficult to determine the relationships among them. “Then we thought of machine learning. Why not let a model learn on its own?” said 17-year-old Li Xiaoyong, another award-winning student. They integrated Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) LiDAR data with multi-source environmental variables such as climate, topography (地形) and soil. The model then identified patterns and made predictions.
But teaching a model to learn was not easy. At times, the algorithm fit too closely to its training data, leaving it unable to make accurate predictions with new data. “We spent a long time finding solutions and adjusting the model,” said Ouyang. “This made me feel like a real scientist, handling each step with great rigor and patience.”
24.What’s the purpose of the two teens building a predictive model?
A.To measure plant types faster. B.To study forests more efficiently.
C.To win an international competition. D.To solve the problem of global warming.
25.Why did they focus on canopy height?
A.Because it’s vital in carbon storage.
B.Because it helps protect species diversity.
C.Because it is difficult to study thoroughly.
D.Because it reflects multiple aspects of forest health.
26.What does Ouyang imply in the last paragraph?
A.Students should try hard to be scientists.
B.Scientists should make accurate predictions.
C.Society should show respect for science.
D.Students should learn the true spirit of scientists.
27.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Why Forests Are So Important
B.The Study of Forest Canopy Height
C.Teens Win an Award for Forest Research Model
D.How to Build a Predictive Model Effectively
根据第二段“Forests are one of these natural carbon sinks. However, they are difficult to study thoroughly, especially in the complex landscapes of China. With so many plant types, measuring each one takes a lot of time and effort.(森林属于这些天然的碳储存体之一。然而,对其进行深入研究却十分困难,尤其是在中国这种复杂的地理环境中。由于植物种类繁多,对每一种植物进行测量都需要耗费大量的时间和精力。)”和第三段中“To solve this problem, two students from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Middle School in Zhongshan, Guangdong, built a predictive model.(为了解决这个问题,来自广东省中山市中山纪念中学的两名学生构建了一个预测模型。)”可知,深入研究森林非常困难,需要耗费大量时间和精力,两位青少年构建预测模型恰是为了应对这一问题。由此推知,他们的目的是更高效地研究森林。故选B项。

Today, Mars is a cold and dry desert. But billions of years ago there is evidence that it had a thick atmosphere and water, making it a promising place to look for past life. The mudstones, found in a dusty riverbed by NASA’s Perseverance Rover, are dotted with interesting markings named leopard spots and poppy seeds. Scientists believe these features contain minerals produced by chemical reactions that could be associated with ancient Martian microbes (微生物).
The Perseverance Rover, which touched down on the Martian surface in 2021, was sent to search for signs of biology. It has spent the last four years exploring a region called the Jezero Crater, which was once an ancient lake with a river flowing into it. The rover found the leopard print rocks last year. They are about 3.5bn years old and are a type of rock called mudstone, which is fine- grained rock formed from clays. The rover used several instruments in its onboard lab to analyze the minerals in the rocks. This data was then sent back to Earth for scientists to study.
In similar conditions on Earth, chemical reactions creating minerals are typically driven by microbes. It’s possible the minerals were produced by natural geological (地质的) processes, but at a press conference NASA said the features could be the clearest signs of life ever found.
The only way to fully confirm if the minerals were made by microbes would be to bring the rocks back to Earth for analysis. A Mars sample return mission has been proposed by NASA but its future looks highly uncertain. The US Space Agency’s science budget is facing huge cuts that have been put forward in President Trump’s 2026 budget and a sample return mission is one of those facing cancellation.
NASA’s plans for such an effort hang in the balance because of the threatened budget cuts, but China is also pursuing a sample return mission that could launch in 2028. While the decision is debated, scientists are desperate to get their gloved hands on the rocks.
28.How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A.By drawing a contrast. B.By using an example.
C.By asking a question. D.By citing an opinion.
29.What is the role of the Perseverance Rover according to the passage?
A.It sent back the rock samples. B.It performed the entire analysis.
C.It confirms the biological origin. D.It serves as a mobile laboratory.
30.Why is it difficult for scientist to get a Mars sample?
A.Because of the uncertain future. B.Because of the funding quarrel.
C.Because of the reduced budget. D.Because of the incomplete decision.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Budget cuts don’t affect NASA. B.NASA’s plan has been canceled.
C.China’s mission has not started. D.Scientists long for rock samples.

Dogs have been a part of human society for over 20,000 years. Initially, they served people by supporting hunters, and it did not take long before they became part of the home. Dogs might not help secure food, but for years evidence has mounted that they help people in another way.
Research led by Dr. Kikusui Takefumi at Azabu University in Japan explains what might be going on. The microbes (微生物) found elsewhere, particularly in the human gut (肠道), produce chemicals that influence how the brain works. Those microbes are heavily affected by diet, but are also shaped by factors like stress, pollutants and exercise. Kikusui knew from his own research that having a dog influenced the microbiota of the human gut, too. With this in mind, he wondered if microbe movement from dogs might be helping bring psychological benefits to owners. Eager to find out, he set up an experiment with 343 participants in Tokyo.
Kikusui specifically worked with teenagers, who are going through a crucial period of brain development, when social interactions often have lasting mental effects; if microbes from dogs were reducing teen anxiety and increasing teen sociality, then this would generate long-term positive effects. He and his coworkers therefore psychologically analysed 96 teens who were dog owners and 247 teens who were not.
Kikusui and his coworkers found that dog owners suffered from fewer social problems. More specifically, they were less likely to react strongly during conflicts, and demonstrated fewer problem behaviors and less social withdrawal. Kikusui and his coworkers then collected saliva (唾液) samples from the participants and noted that certain kinds of Streptococcus and Prevotella 7 were significantly more plentiful in samples from dog owners. They further found that participants within whom these key microbes were rare also tended to have more problematic behaviors. As anticipated before the experiment, microbes, added to the human gut by dogs, may be influencing the brains of their owners in healthy ways.
32.What is the basis for Kikusui’s experiment?
A.Microbes determine human behavior. B.Diet shapes the microbiota in the gut.
C.Dogs reduce mental stress in teenagers. D.Dogs relate to microbes in the human gut.
33.Why were the teenagers chosen as participants?
A.They show more social problems.
B.Their microbes are easily changed.
C.They often tend to keep dogs as pets.
D.Their brain development is at a key stage.
34.How did the research team feel about the result of the experiment?
A.Unsurprised. B.Unsatisfied. C.Discouraged. D.Confused.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Dogs Improve Human Health Constantly B.Dog ownership Reduces Teen Problems
C.Microbes Link Dogs to Human Behavior D.Gut Microbes Influence Brain Negatively

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Cultivate an Optimistic Outlook on Life
We all face challenges, but it’s our response that shapes our experience. While optimism might seem like an inborn trait for some, psychologists suggest it’s more of a learnable skill. A positive mindset doesn’t deny difficulties; instead, it empowers us to approach them with resilience and hope. 36
Shift Your Inner Voice.
The first step is to become aware of your self-talk. Pessimistic thinking often follows patterns like overgeneralizing (“I always fail”) or catastrophizing (“This will ruin everything”). Actively challenge these thoughts. 37 Ask yourself: “Is this absolutely true? What’s a more balanced view?” Replacing “This is a disaster” with “This is a tough spot, but I can handle it” gradually rewires your brain. 38
It’s easy to focus on what’s missing. A powerful counter-habit is to regularly acknowledge what’s good. This isn’t about ignoring problems but about balancing your perspective. You can keep a gratitude journal, listing three specific things you’re thankful for each day. This practice trains your brain to scan for positives.
Surround Yourself with Positivity.
Your environment influences your mindset. Seek out and nurture relationships with people who uplift and support you. 39 Similarly, consume media that inspires you rather than fuels anxiety. Optimism can be contagious; allowing hopeful influences into your life makes it easier to sustain a positive outlook.Focus on Solutions, Not Just Problems.
When faced with a setback, optimism is channeled into action. Instead of dwelling on the “why me,” shift your energy to “what’s next.” Define the problem clearly, then brainstorm small, actionable steps you can take. 40 This forward-moving action, no matter how small, creates a sense of agency and hope, breaking the cycle of helplessness.
Cultivating optimism is a journey, not a switch you flip. It requires consistent practice of these habits. Start with one small change, be patient with yourself, and over time, you’ll find yourself navigating life’s ups and downs with greater strength and a brighter perspective.
A.Instead, try to acknowledge the challenge while believing in your ability to cope and find a way forward.
B.Meanwhile, it is crucial to avoid negative people who always complain.
C.For instance, express appreciation to others, which also strengthens your social bonds.
D.Here are some practical strategies to train your brain for optimism.
E.Celebrate your progress, which will motivate you to carry on.
F.Practice Gratitude Intentionally.
G.Every small step you take builds momentum and proves to yourself that you can make a difference.

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Jeremy,
I’m writing to respond to your proposal of using AI to draft our experiment report. Honestly, I have to decline it politely.
Using AI may save time, but it can’t reflect our real understanding of the experiment. Worse still, we might miss the chance to practice analyzing data and organizing ideas independently, which is vital for our study.
How about we finish the draft together? We can discuss the experiment process first and then divide the work reasonably. This way, we can learn from each other and improve our abilities.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Under the hot afternoon sun, Amma waited beside her mud-walled house. Then Viki, the postman, arrived on his bicycle with a money order. Seeing him, Amma’s tired eyes instantly shone with life. She pushed herself up, her movements slow but eager. “Viki!” she called out, her voice thin but filled with joy. She forgot everything else, wanting nothing more than to hear his voice. “Let me talk to my boy first.”
“Amma, I really don’t have much time today,” Viki said gently, knowing how delicate her happiness was.
“Just for a minute! It will only take a minute, Viki!”
Viki pulled out his old mobile phone. “Alright, but please be quick,” he said, handing her the device. With trembling fingers, Amma answered. After a brief exchange filled with her side of the conversation—questions about health, food, and when he would visit — she ended the call and her face lit up. A wide, genuine smile spread across her wrinkled face, making her look years younger.
Viki handed her the money. “Here you go, Amma. Ten hundred dollars.”
She counted the notes carefully, her thumb brushing against the paper. Selecting one, she folded it neatly and pressed it into Viki’s hand. “This is for you,” she insisted.
“Why, Amma?” he protested, trying to push it back.
She smiled warmly. “You brought me my son’s money, and you let me talk to him. Your kindness costs something, doesn’t it? Please, keep it.”
Though he continued to refuse, she insisted. Finally, he pocketed the note, accepting her gift along with her blessings. He waved goodbye and mounted his bicycle. He had pedalled only a short distance when a familiar voice stopped him.
“Viki!”
It was Ramu, Viki’s workmate. “What are you doing? Why do you do this every single month?” Ramu asked with curiosity keeping his voice low. “You bring her your own money and pretend it’s from her son. Not only that, you give me money to talk to her on phone as her son! Why?”
Viki hadn’t expected anyone to notice. He looked away, his eyes fixed on the horizon. “It’s... complicated.”
“Tell me,” Ramu pressed.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Taking a deep breath, Viki told him the truth.

Viki nodded slowly, a sad look in his eyes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Taking a deep breath, Viki told him the truth. “Her real son... he left for the city to work, right? Every month, he’d send a money order without fail. But one day, instead of the usual envelope, a letter arrived — from his friend, saying her boy had fallen deathly ill... and didn’t make it.” Viki’s voice dropped to a fragile whisper, “How could I tell her? That letter, that tiny bit of hope... it’s all she’s been living for.” Ramu stared, stunned speechless for a beat. “So... you have been lying about her son’s death?”
Viki nodded slowly, a sad look in his eyes. “I lost my own mother last year. I know... I know what it’s like to wait for a letter that never comes. I couldn’t let her find out that way.” He looked back towards Amma’s house, a small figure against the setting sun. “This way, at least she has some peace.” For a long moment, Ramu was silent, looking from Viki’s troubled face to the distant figure of Amma. He saw the situation in a new light, understanding the painful secret behind the postman’s kind lie.

C
D

Mini-series 56 (become) popular on short video platforms lately. These mini-series, often 57 (adapt) from novels, feature episodes lasting one to three minutes, with around 80 to 100 episodes in total. Typically, the first 20 episodes are free, but viewers must pay to access the 58 (remain) episodes. The cost of watching an entire series is almost the price of a movie ticket.
Mini-series cater to the fast-paced urban lifestyle with their short duration and engaging plots, becoming 59 (increasing) popular as people watch them during brief downtime like waiting for a bus or taking an elevator. They offer significant emotional 60 (engage) within a limited time, which is 61 modern people need. However, the genre faces criticism for occasional lowbrow (低俗的) content and 62 (suitable) themes, causing government and platform regulators to remove inappropriate material, as is the case in China.
Some think the rise of mini-series is a good sign. It provides the audience 63 more choices and fun, allowing them 64 (take) advantage of their fragmentary (碎片的) time. Platforms should promote and recommend healthy content, while viewers should mindfully support good mini-series, whether through leaving positive reviews 65 paying to watch mini-series instead of watching pirated ones.

注意:
