I. Teaching Analysis

This lesson focuses on classic stories (e.g., The Lion and the Mouse) and the pronunciation of consonant clusters ch, ph, sh, th, wh. Students will listen to, understand, and retell stories, while practicing target sounds.

II. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Lead-in (5 mins)
1. Greet the Class
Teacher: “Good morning, class! Let’s start with a fun question. Do you like stories? What’s your favorite story? Can you tell us an English story you know?”
2. Share Stories
◦ Invite 2-3 students to share their favorite stories briefly to engage the class and activate prior knowledge.
Step 2: Work on 1a (6 mins)
1. Identify Stories from Pictures
◦ Show the pictures in 1a and ask: “Do you know what stories these pictures are about?”
◦ Encourage students to share the names of the stories (e.g., The Lion and the Mouse, Little Red Riding Hood).
2. Class Discussion
◦ Ask students to vote on which story they know best and briefly explain why they like it.
Step 3: Work on 1b (8 mins)
1. Pre-listening Preparation
◦ Tell students: “We will listen to a story about The Lion and the Mouse (Picture B). Read the sentences in 1b and guess the correct order.”
2. First Listening
◦ Play the first conversation. Ask students to listen carefully and number the sentences in the correct order.
3. Check & Discuss Answers
◦ Review the answers with the class: 5, 4, 3, 1, 2.
◦ Discuss the story to ensure everyone understands the plot.
4. Script Reading
◦ Have students read the listening script aloud. Answer any questions about vocabulary or sentence structure.
Step 4: Work on 1c (7 mins)
1. Pre-listening for the Second Story
◦ Tell students: “Now we will listen to another story (Picture D). Read the sentences in 1c and choose the correct words to complete them.”
2. Second Listening
◦ Play the second conversation. Ask students to fill in the blanks.
3. Review Answers
◦ Go over the answers: (1) A, (2) C, (3) C, (4) B.
◦ Clarify any misunderstandings about the story.
Step 5: Work on 1d (6 mins)
1. Listen & Answer Questions
◦ Play both conversations again. Ask students to answer the questions in 1d.
◦ Remind them that some questions may have more than one correct answer.
2. Share & Explain
◦ Invite students to share their answers and explain their reasoning.
Step 6: Work on 1e (8 mins)
1. Pair Work: Retell Your Favorite Story
◦ Ask students to choose one of the stories they learned and retell it to a partner.
◦ Encourage them to add personal details or feelings to make the retelling more interesting.
2. Share with the Class
◦ Invite a few pairs to share their retellings with the class.
◦ Provide positive feedback and correct any minor errors.
Step 7: Work on Pronunciation (1–2) (8 mins)
1. Introduce Consonant Clusters
◦ Explain the pronunciation of the consonant clusters:
◦ ch /tʃ/ (e.g., chair, catch)
◦ ph /f/ (e.g., photo, phone)
◦ sh /ʃ/ (e.g., shop, wash)
◦ th /θ/ (e.g., think, three) and /ð/ (e.g., this, that)
◦ wh /w/ (e.g., what, where) or /h/ (e.g., who, whom)
2. Listen & Repeat
◦ Play the recording for Pronunciation 1. Ask students to listen and repeat the words.
◦ Challenge them to add one more word to each cluster group.
3. Practice Reading Aloud
◦ Pair students up and have them read the conversation aloud slowly, focusing on the bold letters.
◦ Play the recording again and have them read along at normal speed to practice natural pronunciation.
Step 8: Summary (3 mins)
• Recap Key Points
◦ We learned to identify, understand, and retell classic stories like The Lion and the Mouse.
◦ We practiced the pronunciation of consonant clusters ch, ph, sh, th, wh.
• Encouragement
Teacher: “Stories are a great way to learn English and share cultures. Keep reading and telling stories!”
Step 9: Homework (2 mins)
• Retell a Story: Retell one of the stories you learned today to a family member.
